CANTILEVERED METAL STAIRCASE: PRIVATE RESIDENCE, 960 BEL AIR ROAD, LOS ANGELES, CA - USA
Designed and developed fabrication details for a stainless steel cantilevered staircase, supervised the fabrication of the product to ensure both design and quality were accurately met per the shop drawings. The scope included the cantilevered metal treads, the guardrail screen and the handrail. Both the design and execution of this stair was a challenge as the client did not want any exposed fasteners and specially with the stair spanning across a double height atrium and the acccess being limited only tthrough the double height atrium, the design had to be extremely installation friendly. The tread was hence designed to be one assembly that could slide onto the existing cantilevered structural tube and be field welded in place. Given the inherent camber in the material, the other challenge was to have the guardrail screen rods plumb to the metal treads keeping in mind that they spanned across one entire floor height with no intermediate connection. The rods are hence torqued at the bottom connection to accept the tension and fastened to the knife plate with a countersunk fasteners.

One of the scopes in this project included an array of front entry stairs for 7 townhomes along the Sackett street in Brooklyn, NY. The project schedule has been very challenging on this entire job, primarily with the main goal being mass production and mass execution of the diverse scope items the project encompasses. Hence this scope had to be designed keeping this goal in mind, which resulted in the stair being fabricated as a single assembly. Responsible for both the design and execution of all these stairs, I was involvled right from the material take-offs to approval shop drawings to fabrication and installation drawings. Each stair is galvanized and finished in tnemec primer and black paint. As seen in the image, the design is a combination of pickets and perforated panel striking a balance between the positive and negative spaces on either side of the stair.

The project scope was the Burberry Store Front, a very peculiar design of stainless steel cross frames lit with LED lights inturn supporting the black tinted glass.

A very fast paced retail project. The design included stainless steel extrusions that formed the diagonal store front pattern, detailed to accept the lighting fixtures. The challenging part of the store front were the diverse glass shapes that had to be accurately nested accounting for adequate tolerances before placing the final order.

DEVELOPMENT SKETCH OF LIBRARY COURT
CAMPUS OF IDEAS: DAV INSTITUTIONAL AND STAFF HOUSING COMPLEX, PANVEL - INDIA Developing a 750,000 sq.ft. of institutional and staff housing, along with designing the entire campus for both primary and secondary education for DAV public school. The 3500 sq. mts. Central court serves as an ‘Exchange’ and congregattion space between the students, teachers and the community and is strategically placed closer to the campus main entrance. The institutional facilities namely, administration, management building, library, labs and school are flanked around the central court for easy navigation through this meandering layout. Every individual building is accessed through its own courtyard to allow for maximum daylight and ventilation to the habitable spaces. A meditation center is located strategically in between the student housing & the staff housing, and maintains its sanctity and peacefulness by being designed in the midst of a stream that is reminiscent of the Ghareshwar river that flows along the site. The housing pods have been assigned with terraces and courts to allow for privacy with adequate daylight & ventilation for each unit.

Designing a 52,650 sq.ft. of office space for Anand Bazaar Patrika (ABP), fondly known as the ‘Voice of Bengal’, the number 1 daily newspaper publishing company. At first, we studied the circulation pattern in the context of the Urban Network in the assigned floor plate. Based on the functional needs of an Urban Space, the floor plan was divided into 4 main components: + the walkways, roadways (Circulation) that form the main arteries of an Urban Space, + the Junctions (Nodes) which form the connections between the main arteries + feature elements of any Urban Space primarily the Waterbody + Voids that define the subtraction of space, primarily Green Area

FURNITURE LAYOUT
Delhi, the national capital with its fast moving life & its urban network which is inherently dynamic, full of life and activity superimposes itself on this 52,650 sq.ft of a canvas. The floor plate is massive with windows only along the periphery, it was hence imperative to bring in daylight into the central areas. By proposing this dynamic glass structure right in the middle and creating this roof opening, we could successfully filter ample daylight into the interior spaces.
The vivacity, indomitable courage and an uncompromising attitude of ABP’s MISSION and VISION has been rightly emphasized through the bold forms of the design. As the shapes unfold to reveal the story behind ABP’s success they double up into some of the main divisions of the company. The design embraces ‘the chaos and uncertainty’ that thrives in the business world as a strategy of any corporate development.

THE LOUNGE AREA
Our proposal of an open office plan deals greatly with incorporating all the requirements cited by ABP, wherein they were particular in their count of the workstations and the cubicles, alongwith creating stunning work environments as well as interesting open spaces to enhance the creativity and innovation of every member of the organization. The library or the resource center forms the focal point of the office floor plate. Taking advantage of the location of the office on the last floor, we proposed the library to be an internal access to the terrace above. With requisite permissions from the local authorities & strict analysis by the structural engineers, we proposed to puncture the roof over the library creating a seamless visual look.

Iconic to the local rural stores, the ‘The Market Place’ has been effectively expressed through the shop fittings having the local features and identifies like the stepped central display units for gunny bags, barrels. Also the overhead units for displaying the Kitchenware have been conceptualized straight from the rural households.

The regional sense of belonging has been brought out by effective use of the local materials - exposed brick in the form of brick barrel vaults. The underside of the vault being exposed brick and exteriors finished with china mosaic, the structure uniquely combines to make a strong rural statement. A continuous band of skylights supplementing the natural light follows the curved barrel vault in each bay. Light pours down between these openings which tower above the vaulted structure. The store has been designed completely on passive ventilation strategies such as ‘Cross ventilation’, ‘Stack Effect’. With no active mechanical ventilation the ventilation for the store had to be meticulously designed keeping in mind the climatic conditions. The walls are punctured with openings at the tie beam level to facilitate air circulation within the store. The vents in the vaulted roof are planned effectively to compliment the height of the structure, hence being able to create convection currents thereby using the Stack Effect Strategy for the ventilation of the volume within each bay. The large central courtyard acts as a catalyst in ventilating the space passively. The narrow floor plan allows for ample daylight and effective passive ventilation throoughout the year.

COMMUNITY AND SUSTAINABILITY With each main village housing an AADHAAR FLAGSHIP STORE - THE HUB (Greenfield Development), and THE SPOKE (Brownfield Development) were strategically located within a district to provide easy access and service to the neighborhoods encompassing it. The success of the store required a LANDMARK to be created for the town. A space that would fuse shopping convenience with entertainment, activity and glamour. The challenge was to maintain the rural connect with the people and at the same time celebrate the aspirations of an urban lifestyle.

The green and pollution free environs in the lap of nature, the YMCA at Ahmedabad has the unique distinction of being a designated international center. The design brief emphasized the concept of ‘THE WHOLE FAMILY’.

Designed to provide a leisure destination for the whole family, the building program was devised. Categorized into Indoor and Outdoor, the space planning included the following INDOOR 1. The design is refreshing and welcoming to induce a feel good factor and reflect the growing ambition and spirit of YMCA’s ideals.
The OUTDOOR facilities include three swimming pools, a party lawn, car parking for approximately 500 cars, a jogging track and two tennis courts.
This modern, vibrant environment thrives to evoke a sense of ownership and pride, and becoming a focal point for the local community.
The design was conceived into 2 phases, the FIRST PHASE including the Fitness Center, The Banquet Hall, the Theme spas and Restaurants, and pools.

THIRD TO FOURTH LEVEL INSTITUTION LAYOUT: A significant entry for institution was planned from south west side to enter directly onto the first floor avoiding the main hostel stair. A huge 3-storey atrium was designed on the south side flanked by 2 stairrcases. Staircases help vertical movement through central space in a seamless fashion. Two public podiums were created, first having assembly / seminar hall and cafetaria, while the upper landscaped podium is for student interaction. Classrooms were lined on the northern side to get maximum morning light.

HOSTEL LAYOUT: Hostel rooms for international students were designed for 3 students with the idea of flexibility, and spatial comfort. The Ground space was recreated on the 4th floor for students with skylight covering the institution level below. Semi-open spaces served as connections doubling up as cafetaria and recreational space. Terraces at hostel level were designed as multi-usable spaces and were connected with open staircases.

Designing high-end apparel and jewelery lifestyle stores ranging from 1,500 sft to 50,000 sft pan-INDIA. Depending on the store sizes, 3 distinct formats were finalized, Format A - ‘The Mall’ for a minimum store size of 50,000 sft, Format B - ‘The Collection’, for a minimum store size of 10,000 sft, Format C - ‘The Selections’, for a minimum store size of 1,500 sft. The brand value-added services per store are allocated depending on the particular format the store falls under.

Identifying the look and feel of the space started with building a MOOD BOARD that would truly display the essence of the store in terms of both its interior and branding. It was important for the space to have a seamless and elegant appearance, which reflected in its layout.
DEVELOPMENT SKETCH FOR WALL UNIT TYPE J
The challenge was to stitch the eclectic brands and their visually distinct identities into one fabric allowing for a smooth transition between the different sections. The design strongly follows the idea of a glamorous fashion night with its refreshing & relaxing ambience. The quotation of ornamental and traditional patterns are embedding the design in its branding context. The materials for the store and the furniture have been particularly selected keeping in mind the elegance it displays along with the products. A dark walnut brown veneer or black laminated surfaces with accents of golden used with clear glass bring opulence to the look of the store.

The entire store has been finished in Travertino Marble Stone flooring to give a seamless look. Initially the idea was to clad the walls with the Marble Stone, but after taking a closer look at the budget the Stone was substituted for Oikos Golden Shimmer Texture paint. Hence, by following one language throughout all the diifferent brands and providing for lineant circulation spaces with some lounge areas thrown in, the Jewellery format best translated the Brand’s Vision and Strategy into its Retail Architecture.

The most important aspect of this store was the Lighting Design. The lighting has been discreetly designed with backlit ornamental surfaces casting mystical shadows over the building envelope. Chandeliers suspended from the ceiling allow for a more traditional yet classy look blending superbly with the brand. Mirrored or reflective flooring mark the floor plan with the Walls cladded with Red Velvet Panels to give a feeling of continuation even beyond the physical boundaries of the store. A central water feature breaks the monotony of the Section and contributes to the serene ambience. The store expressed minimalism through its display units. Unlike the conventional Retail look, the walls have been carefully designed as features rather than stacking elements. The furniture design follows sleek lines with bare minimum arrangements to hang the products throwing more light on the high end apparels & footwear.

SHOP FITTING DESIGN The Shop fittings are a inseparable part of the space architecture.
SEAMLESS CONVERGENCE: M PORT LIFESTYLE, HIGH END MOBILE RETAIL, BANGALORE, INDIA
The fit-outs symbolise a “seamless convergence” of technologies across a range of electronic products. Conceived as drop-down panels, suspended from the ceiling, they are iconic to the store’s lifestyle appearance. The convergence has been effectively expressed through the wall fittings as a seamless mass peeled out of the ceiling. Since the architecture and the fit-outs are insperable, it was difficult to create a prototype away from the site. A Prototype of the drop-down panel was created inhouse to understand the proportions of the display niches and the effects of lighting. Sections are color-coded for easy identification of the display units and demonstaration zones.
DESIGN Designing a 4500 sq ft of high end mobile store in Bangalore for the CONVERG M group. This store was designed to showcase seamless convergence of technologies, across products ranging from mobile phones, printers, gaming consoles and computers. AWARDS Won the “Best store design” award in the Technology stores category at the 2008 VM-RD retail design awards.

THOUGHT DESIGN Mother Earth believes in providing its consumers with great quality goods while nurturing the environment and building on the strengths of marginalised rural communities to create sustainable livelihoods and overall prosperity. It is a social brand that offers the consumers the best of the Indian natural hand crafted products while simultaneously providing livelihoods to the rural artisans and labourers of India. A large part of its merchandise is sourced from rural producers and fair trade partners thus encouraging green and artesian skills, which eventually help in providing non-farm based incomes to its rural masses. The 11,000 sft store spread across 3 levels in Bangalore, is designed based on the ideology, “Conspicuous consumption gives way to conscious consumption�. To make sustainable a sensible idea, the store uses recycled and reclaimed wood for all the furniture and fit-out. Even the external facade signage treatment that holds the MOTHER EARTH LOGO is constructed from reclaimed wood. Use of low VOC paints defines the pastel color palette. The color scheme reflects the different sections, namely Torquoise blue used for EARTH FASHION, Rust Red used for EARTH HOME, and Light green used for EARTH FOOD. Ranging from house artifacts and furniture (EARTH HOME) to apparels and accessories (EARTH FASHION) to food products (EARTH FOOD), the store merchandise is supplied by rural artists around Bangalore, providing a platform to encourage talent in the community and support regional economy, along with creating awareness on the importance of sustainable living. The store design & merchandise aids in reducing the carbon footprint of the overall venture.

The 12,000 sft office is divided into two levels to house Office and their backoffice storage, sample room,laboratory,cad room in a very straight , simple and economical design with play of corporate colours. The challenge was to maintain the continuity of the architecture keeping in mind the physical division of the space. The color schemes reflect the use of corporate colors, with red used strategically in the gathering or entrance lobby area, red being the color of a grand opening or welcome.

RETHINKING SCHOOL ARCHITECTURE The design ideology was “children cannot be classified into one homogenous community”. A school needs to be designed to cater to different age groups. Taking the ideology further into space design, the school has been conceptualized as separate structures defined by the age group it caters to, however, it is a corridor-less space. A unique blend of indoor-outdoor spaces form the connections reflective of transparency and connectivity to encourage collaboration amongst students and faculty. These also help in bringing ample daylight into the classrooms flanked around these connections. With a vision of building communities of the future, Oakridge aims to be the school that nurtures creativity, inspires self-discovery, new thoughts and ideas to build students who will imagine, create and invent eventually progressing the human culture.
do - feel - know THOUGHT DESIGN The design and branding for this 11 acre campus is inspired by the dandalion. A light and colorful floating seed conveys an open mind. The delicate yet tangible form of the dandelion translates the “open minds” thought of Oakridge effectively. THE CATCH Catch is the restaurant located in the Fishing Village. Flanked by a covered corridor all around, this restaurant is the main focal point of the Future Outpost. BEACH AND BEACH SHACK Beach, or the Pool side and Deck area are conceived as a Shack with brightly colored lanterns with long fabric, cane furniture and pool chairs, hanging beds on the deck as informal seating along with wooden battened seating for formal gatherings. The finishes and the materials used blend seamlessly with the ‘getaway’ mood. The open shower area around the pool is uniquely designed as a gateway to the enclosed restrooms as seen above. The pebbled tray controls the flow of water from entering the pool. Materials from the demolishment of the existing deck area were re-used for the renovation of this zone.

The concept for the redevelopment of a 94,575 sft campus of the management institute stemmed out of the ideology, “A holistic new perspective that is inclusive and therefore it is WE SCHOOL and not B - SCHOOL”. The logo or the ‘trikon’, a triangular form represents the body, mind and soul is a very potent symbol and also represents society, academics and corporates working collaboratively towards a bright future. design experience ‘Shopping is an enduring experience’, as quoted by the client, was the key insight in designing this 2,500 sft boutique for the Mandhana group. A double height of 25 feet gives the entrance lounge a voluminous look. The peripheral fixtures are conceived as simple rectangular posts finished in white veneer. A central consultation zone was conceived with the idea of providng personalized attention to the customers, allowing them to consult the designers for their specific needs.

Accent colors used along the double height display walls aid in bringing out the merchandise along with adding to the boutique appeal. The challenge was to ensure a good mix of merchandise was displayed, without jeopardizing the ‘boutique look-n-feel’ of the store. Strategically locating the display units along the peripheral double height walls, and allowing for an open central floor area, with reflective finishes in the entrance lounge area added to the ‘boutique style’.

This 8000 sq ft single family home, spread across 5 levels is a bold expression of changing dimensions to provide uniqueness in each facade. The program includes 5 bedrooms, Hometheatre and Studio Office space along with Stilt parking. It features a central open congregation space serving a unique function on each level, flanked by rooms. With functions distributed vertically, it was important for the client to maintain a homogenity in the appearance of the facade. This has been seamlessly established through the connecting planes that help in tying the different floors giving a monolithic appearance. The solidness in the facade is punctured strategically with the appropriate use of glass in the balconies or the starcase block. This helps in breaking the monotony of the otherwise solid mass and aids in balancing the overall facade. Taking advantage of the corner plot, the building opens up with projecting balconies and double height connections on the facades facing the road.

DESIGN A first of its kind home improvement retail format in India, part of the Future Group. Spread across 125,000 sq. ft., the store provides consumers the largest variety for all that they may need for their homes, under one roof. Sloped towards the wetlands and is primarily made up of meadows grasses. Bee hives are near to assist in pollination and provide learning opportunities for students.
The activity area spill out from the Flex Room’s patios. This area is dedicated for hands-on outdoor training and developing other related skills.
Following the natural topography of the site, the wetlands are located near the river. The plants and micro organisma present help decontaminate the brownfield soil and filter stormwater run-off before it reaches the river.
A unique high and low ropes course teaches students confidence, teamwork and problem solving. It is also a fun way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
School will partner with Bartram’s Garden. The students have access to educational gardens and resources to supplement their classroom learning. In exchange, the students will assist, the gardens in maintaining and restore the existing baseball and tennis courts and the Garden staff will receive free access to school facilities after school hours.

“Wellness” of students is an important aspect of the building architecture. ADAPTIVE DESIGN: RESTORATION OF THE SCHUYLKILL WATERFRONT, PHILADELPHIA - PA Research & propose a solution to resolve a problem at city level. The allocated timeframe was 6 weeks. Teams were asked to research 3 critical problems within the Philadelphia city limit and develop 3 scenarios to each problem, starting with immediate to future concerns if they are unresolved. PROBLEMS RESEARCHED A few options considered which were critical in enduring the urban value and protect the basic environment and ecosystem that we all are an integral part of were + Restructuring the City’s Downtown area which although booming with a distinct urban lifestyle does not provide for a comfortable transportation system due to increase in the residential & commercial development. Our proposal was to introduce a sustainable transit system. + Prevent the mass exodus of certain suburban areas that have been neglected over the years due to improper planning and infrastructural facilities leading to a non-descript state of sustenance. We picked up Germantown as our case study and subject of detail. + The most voted was the Resurgence of the Schuylkill Riverfront as this provided us with a very strong motive, ranging from the history & use of the river from the early on times to what it has been reduced till date.

ADAPTIVE DESIGN: THE BREATHING UMBRELLA, SAN-DIEGO, CA The first adaptive design project was at the individual level, to create an artifact to be deployed outdoor for human comfort.
THE FORM The increasing urbanization has diluted the realm of nature within an urban setting. Contemporary, de-constructed architecture has seen a tremendous rise in the cityscape.
Have we lost our connection to the nature?? Our team’s attempt was to try and answer that question by blending in nature by means of both form and processes into the urban setting. Extensive sketching on the various organic forms, their association with geometry to ensure an executable design and researching into the process of blossoming helped us derive the form. Taking the design a step further we also explored the options of using a sensor-driven automated system that would open up the umbrella in a certain proximity range. Realising the energy consumed for this operation along with other practical reasons this did not seem viable.

CHALLENGES - high temperature extremes made it necessary to implement an effective solar sun shade strategy without increasing the cooling loads on the structure - using a passive system for cooling meant a greater challenge to be able to harvest the available winds in the dry and hot climate - moderate relative humidity OPPORTUNITIES - abundant daylighting made it effective to consider use of PV panels as a renewable energy source for generating electricity for our product - relatively good wind on the site helped in going for a complete passive system for ventilation - less precipitation meant the shade needed to be designed only for the sun protection

Analysing the users comfort level in the chosen climate and with the specific use of our product, we envisaged that our product would serve a year round use. So sticking with our strategy for cooling, we decided to target locations with a hot and dry climate. San Diego seemed to fit the bill keeping in mind our comfort strategies.
