SITE & SURROUNDINGS Mehrauli Archeological park : the Qutb complex:•It is the most the recognizable landmark in Delhi. •The Qutub Complex was put on the World Heritage List in 1992. •Attracts over 7000 visitors daily and several hundred school children daily. •The Qutb Minar Towers over this historic area where Qutbuddin Aibak laid the foundation of the delhi sultanate in 1193. •He built the Quwwat-ul-Islam (“might of Islam”) mosque and the Qutb Minar to announce the the advent of the Muslim sultans. •The mosque is a patchwork fusion of decorative Hindu panels , salvaged from razed temples around the site, and Islamic domes and arches. •Later, Iltutmish Alauddin khiljii and Feroze Shah Tughluq added more structures heralding a new structural style.

Design proposal Design proposal / Intervention: (800 lakhs) •Today’s world is tomorrow’s history. The historical monuments lead the cultural heritage of a nation. From deterioration to parking, they face innumerable problems. As deterioration or decay is a law of nature, the monuments need safe-guarding hands of human generation. •Contributing in the preservation of Qutb Minar, a UNESCO world heritage site, the task of revising the parking complex was carried forward. Segregating the parking spaces for buses, cars and scooters was the major concept. •Parking entrance is relocated •The road area will be cobbled & elevated to footpath level at certain point to provide pedestrian crossing. •Separate parking area for bus, car and scooters. •Only 2 levels shall be provided in whole parking area. (±00 & +0.02m) •Drinking water, tourist information center, ATM, cafeteria, toilet are added to existing facilities. •Some existing trees are transferred ( only those which are obstructing parking and drive way area) •50 trees (app.) will be planted.

DESIGN PROPOSAL Design proposal and intervention• Proposing only one entry to museum for both VIP’s and common people. • Relocating the library so that it can be easily accessible from outside. • The museum is about Gandhiji, not about his achievements. • The basic concept is to divide museum in four parts showcasing four different stages of Gandhiji’s life1. 2. 3. 4.

Childhood and his education in London His life in South Africa ( Tolstoy farm) And his life in India ( till 15 August 1947) His life after independence (1947)

High recall value of his personality

To surprise/startle and even shock visitors by his presence through various projection and lighting techniques.

Mundane details of his daily life.

Attributes that make him more human than perceived.

Project- Gandhi Smirti- Redesign (Raj Ghat, New Delhi) - Designing & drawing, DPR

01

DESIGN PROPOSAL Elements of interventionEvery one who knows about Gandhiji, knows about the ideas and concepts that made the personality, but very few really know the person that he was. The purpose of creating the new Museum is to bring alive ‘The Mahatma’ as a person and make his existence real. This would be done through a variety of mediums. One would use all the senses to bring out an experience that would not only tell more about the person but would also make his presence felt around the visitor. Some of the systems that would be used are: • Dioramas– create scenes depicting the life and events of the Mahatma •Wax mannequins– the Mahatma in a variety of costumes and at various ages •Holographic projection– Live speeches and mannerisms •World Media- Visitor interface with multiple window use •Laser effect- movement in the corridors •Audio visual room- playing documentaries and videos The result of the overall experience in the museum would be the personalization of Gandhiji, making him more human and bringing him closer to our every day life.

Project- Gandhi Smirti- Redesign (Raj Ghat, New Delhi) - Designing & drawing, DPR

02

DESIGN PROPOSAL Dioramas-

A diorama is a re-creation of a natural setting which shows a specific moment in time. In the Gandhi Smriti it will create scenes depicting the different event from Gandhiji’s life. Since the diorama must entertain, as well as educate, specimens are set in lifelike poses, so as to convey a narrative of Gandhiji’s life.

Project- Gandhi Smirti- Redesign (Raj Ghat, New Delhi) - Designing & drawing, DPR

03

DESIGN PROPOSAL Wax mannequins-

Life-size dummies of wax of Mahatma Gandhi and others in a variety of costumes at various stage of his life. These mannequins are the same size as a real person and have arms, legs, hands, feet, and a head. All the mannequin can be posed in different positions to give them a more lifelike look.

Project- Gandhi Smirti- Redesign (Raj Ghat, New Delhi) - Designing & drawing, DPR

04

DESIGN PROPOSAL Holographic projection-

It is an advanced form of photography that allows an image to be recorded in three dimensions. They usually just look like sparkly pictures or smears of color. This technique can be used for virtual communication.

Project- Gandhi Smirti- Redesign (Raj Ghat, New Delhi) - Designing & drawing, DPR

05

DESIGN PROPOSAL World media-

Here touch screen LED cubes will be install. And visitor interface with life and events of Mahatma Gandhi. Opinions of other great people about Gandhiji and Gandhiji’s quote will also display from laser projection.

TOWN HALL- LIVE THE HISTORY

N

Axiom India was engaged by INTACH (Delhi Chapter) in developing the concept design for the Re-Development of Town Hall into a City Museum and a centre of cultural and social heritage depicting the history, the culture and the life of Delhi. The objective is to provide a complete and wholesome family experience at Town Hall and to develop it into an attractive tourist destination. The complex will have museums, library, children’s activity rooms, auditorium for cultural activities with historical significance, demonstration room, light and sound programme, fine dining area, street food of India and other activities and a boutique hotel. It is proposed to launch it as a unique and a complete family experience for citizen of Delhi and tourist so that they can become familiar with history and culture of Delhi at one place with multifarious activities. The overall concept was prepared keeping the original Architecture of the Town Hall intact and adding only what was necessary to convert it into a world class centre for cultural experience. THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL The boutique hotel at the complex derives its name from the two most important elements of its existence. First, ‘Dilli’, which comes from the older version of the name Delhi and the fact that the hotel is located in the heart of Delhi and second, the ancient Persian word for an Inn, that is ‘Serai’. The boutique hotel offers a calm and luxurious stay at possibly the most culturally rich parts of Delhi i.e. Shahjahanabad or Old Delhi. The hotel has forty well appointed rooms with all modern amenities and services. It also offers an Indoor Pool side Café for a relaxing dip after a tiring day of sightseeing. The location of the hotel next to the ‘Ekayana- Culture Center’ makes it an excellent choice for visitors who are in Delhi on a short visit and would like to absorb the culture of the City.
