Projects 01. Raghu Rai’s Residence ACADEMICS
He is one of the greatest thing to have happened to me and this fuzzy ball of positivity has urged me to become a better human being. He forever emits honesty and purity. He is my son, my soul, my pet, he is Shadow Khurana. I adopted him when he was three months old, during my thesis without letting my parents know. When, for the very first time he visited my parents home, he instantly became an integral part of my family. My mother has a bad medical history, but Shadow’s presence has given her the positivity to dream that she will walk again someday. He has filled my house with love, wishes and blessings.

The portfolio cover portrays Shadow’s and my love for travelling. Especially sailing through water. The power of the Ganges has inspired me from a young age. Every year I visit the holy river to pay tribute to her by chanting, rafting and floating along the stream. As an architect, reflections and shadows are now an integral part of me. Probably how shadow got his name. This has me in a perpetual thirst for exploration; of the surroundings, the reflections and the self.

Entrance to the House The concept comes from the project title. The first image that strikes my mind is a father holding a child, elders giving aashirwaad (Indian way of blessing). Similarly the children are kept in an envelope of warmth, creating an enclosed cocoon spaces through volumetric arrangements. Inner spaces are imagined with soft and cool colors where a child feels comfortable and secure.

Raghu Rai and his spouse are successful artists outrivaling in their realms. Rai is an international photographer and his wife is an architect. The proposed site is located in Sonipat, Haryana. Their artistic and creative frame influences the initial concept and start of the design with a keen eye to angles, which are an integral part of both professions. The house has designed at various angles in in the front and with linearity in the rear dividing the house into two phases. The front incorporates public areas reflecting their professional careers and significance of the perfect angle for the right picture. The rear reflects the minimalism of Rai and his wife’s life with circular edges defining wall as a single canvas. Waiting

The other idea was going back into the past of Haryana, it was and is the state of beautiful green villages, Harit Pradesh (Haryana). Where people enjoy the warmth of sun, sitting in open, under the tree, gathering around chaupals, etc. In the present time all these are missing, to bring back that era I would emphasize on the spaces like chaupal, open greens and interesting baithaks. Time change, we change, all the above will be done by amalgamating past and the present scenario so that people will recall their history within the space of modern era.

The very basic idea generated from the thought to design a place where people meet to exchange not only goods and services, but also ideas. It will be the amalgamation of events at the center, which brings life to the town, and makes the community viable. In other words, an area which for the people by the people. It benefits the local public by having shopping, eateries and other facilities. They form the point of interaction. In todays scenario, Sonipat city is densely populated, in other words its busy. By creating such hubs, we will be serving the people with good evenings.

Resucitating Sonipat Nullah
Sonepat Nullah or Drain No.6 was channelized to the city for providing water to all the parts of the city and also for carrying flood water away. Overtime this purpose has been overhauled by using this nullah for waste disposal. Which was used to provide a beautiful water front to the city has now become one pathetic, unhealthy and inhabitable part of the city. Since land has become scarce, poor homeless people have constructed their dwellings on this here. This has led to slum generation in the areas. All sorts of untreated waste, like waste from service stations, abattoirs, soil water from houses is directly discarded into this drain.

Road Coming From Murthal
GVM Girls College
The site is located in Sonipat, Haryana and can be termed as an unseen junction where old city overlaps with the new city. The nullah passes through the most important region that caters the city by providing services and major revenue generating areas like bust stand, market, cinema. Due to its unsanitary conditions, it impacts the hygienic conditions and living standards of all the places it flows through. Mechanical Green Belt Monsoon Rain Garden Parking Service Garage

Second layer of concept was generated while understanding the needs in different parts of the stretch to provide functional plan while the concept of green lake is still effective.

With our aim set to reuse the neglected water drainage system of Sonipat Drain No. 6 to progressively bring about sustainable change in the city. Transforming Sonipat’s sewage laden storm water network and locality around into new urban blueprints for sustainable transport, environmental management, and cultural interaction in cities. The initial idea of green lake evolved while trying to connect the two parts of the city, the old and the new by converting the nullah into a green belt that runs along the stretch.

This part of the site has a commercial front behind which there are residences. In this area a standard outlook has been designed so that a character may be highlighted in the area and also provide the shops a building line and active frontage. All the streets have been give neat edging, separate pathways for pedestrians, space for parking has been provided. In the commercial front of the site we have proposed to cluster all the hardware & automobile repair shop in one complex & ETP (effluent treatment plant) has been installed in this complex which treats waste at first stage before letting it in to the drain which will eventually take it to the STP.

This area holds one of the major developments proposed on site. This area has been proposed into a plaza (Open space) for people to interact. In this area the nullah is mostly covered, but exhausts have been installed for the gases to escape. A link to this area has been provided from the bus stand. This part of the site originally had slums which have been shifted to proposed EWS dwellings. A BRC (business retail centre) has been proposed & also a seed market has been developed. All the abattoirs have been relocated to the outskirts of the city. Because of the chaos created by the hawkers near the bus stand & Subhash Chowk a hawker market has been proposed. Open Workshops

Proposed Master Plan
Interaction Greens Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) have been established with the objective to provide quality management education to the country. They aim at identifying the brightest intellectual talent amongst India’s students and preparing them to eventually manage and lead the various section of the Indian economy. In order to design an institute of such high repute, with constant innovation and resurgence of knowledge, one is posed to find inherent answers to certain fundamental questions. On one hand there is the challenge to be modern and outward in approach, while on the other hand there is the need to revert to basics. Reflection of past on the canvas of the future, lead the design team to explore and find roots in the indigenous experience of architecture as a base. The principles though need modern adaptation. Thus a design, impending evolution of age-old, wise methodologies of built environment are attempted to be fused with the modern understanding of space making.

My project draws inspiration from something very significant in light of the nature of my course, something that is huge and humble, something that we stumble across everyday and barely notice, a city. The streets form the arteries across mohallas and share interaction when they meet together (Chowk). The Intersection results in creating numerous activities and hence forms a place of action.

Undergoing through the idea of mohalla, chowk, gully I derived my concept from the intersecting streets and formation of chowk. The streets become the corridors, as they are connecting various educational pockets and results in calling them as KNOWLEDGE STREET. hese streets are allowed to intersect at a point which is named as INTERACTION CHOWK. I believe that learning isn’t necessarily confined to classrooms or the programmed curriculum. It is has been observed that as much, if not more learn¬ing occurs in impromptu encounters with peers and faculty. The proposed Academic Block recognizes this, giving ample opportunities to meet others by chance while moving through the campus and provides for room to settle down for a discussion.

The Campus Master Plan has evolved considering rolling land, flowing water and local climatic conditions. The physical form of the entire campus has tried to create contextual urban morphology. The focus of the Proposed Master Plan is to possess a sense of place, beauty/ tranquility and functionality that clearly represents the priorities and aspirations of the Indian Institute of Management. Proposed master plan also places the high priority on the quality of the campus environment for its residents and visitors. Valley cutting across the developable zone allows us to connect the two parts by locating academic block. This interface is envisioned to act as the foci of the whole campus. The residential and hostel fabric is then dispersed on either sides of the academic complex. The major lesson from a historic city development like that of Udaipur, is to find ways to preserve and conserve water by making check-dams and lakes. This is one focus of our proposal for the IIM Udaipur campus. Check-dams are placed in strategic locations, based on the average annual rainfall and on the analysis of the natural water sheds of the contours, designed to hold a maximum amount of rainfall. Local sewage treatment and recycling of water has also been considered to make this a self-sufficient, water sustainable campus.

The site is located in the industrial area of Gurgaon, Haryana. The building is a fashion designing studio. The main theme and brief was to have a refined industrial approach from the exteriors into the interiors. The demands of raw and exposed architecture from the client lead us to a clean yet quirky design approach towards the studio. The Exterior comprises of exposed brick and concrete, with the brick in a rattrap bond. Drama is created through jaalis and perforations, added for the play of light and shadow. Three straight flights of stairs unite the office internally. The scheme of the interior is also kept organic and basic. The building comprises of non plastered brick surfaces , exposed ceiling and services.

The Science City will essentially serve as a resource center for Disseminating modern science and technology information with greater emphasis on Indian achievements in Assam & NE region. And will prove as hub of science popularization and non-formal science education for the entire NE region. We envisage center as an “EDUTAINMENT” facility. It is a mix in equal measure between an educational and amusement facility. Entertainment, Archival and Education are three key values that define this ‘one of a kind’ center for promoting Science. The entire Site along with the Building shall be designed to attain the aims and objectives of the Science city. A shared emphasis between the building and the exhibits is a key strategy proposed to create a complex which has both synergy and balance between the “Container” and the “Content”. The building designed as a ‘Landmark’ shall be the symbol for Guwahati & the entire NE in time to come.

STUDIO, Banyan Fig DESIGN STUDIO New Delhi, India Invidual Project Personal Work Studio
Table Study
Shelve Study
I always wanted to have my own studio and practice. In 2012 during my training I chanced upon a poem ‘VRIKSHA SAR’ which inspired the name for my studio- Banyan Fig . I am very inspired by the structure of a banyan tree, how it nurtures several different fauna and flora within, and spreads it’s foliage far and wide, its branches converting into secondary roots. Its a similar process with architecture, many people contribute toward making a habitat, growing together. The logo defines a tree in plan and elevation; the four elevations define our sensitivity of covering all the aspects of spatial design and each leaf is like a thought, which gets multiplied and forms a tree. The studio space is a small abode consisting of space to work, interact and relax. The design follows Corbusier’s modular ratio with propotions and heights ergonomically designed. The Studio celebrates every aspect of an architectural practice, with the space transforming from work and meetings in the day time to discourses, forums and movie screenings in the evening. The outdoor spill-out creates a fresh and green pocket , doubling up as a material testing and display zone. VRIKSHA SAR Inspite of a seed so dark and small How come you grow so beautiful and big? Inspite of the hwwurdles and the mighty gravity How do you balance your twits, turns and rise so tall? Inspite of your wisdom wages old How come you now so low and humbly? O! Reversed tree Tell us the essence of your being The source of grand nobility and generosity So that we may learn.
