There is something special about “J” horses ...
by MARY KIRKMAN
If time ever allows, you might consider having a conversation about Arabian breeding with Larry Jerome, of Jerland Farms, in Barron, Wisconsin. You’ll come away the better for it, no matter whether you’re an experienced breeder or a newcomer enjoying the chat and looking for a little more background. Jerome is a gold mine of information, one of those throwbacks to an era where pedigree knowledge and horsemanship were bone-deep in longtime breeders. For more than 50 years, Jerland has been his field of dreams, and now, six generations into his breeding program, it’s an example of how to do it right. In late July, AHT sat down with Larry to talk about breeding principles and what’s going on at Jerland today.
Kola J (Khaja J x Jer-Koko) 2018 Region 9 Champion Western Pleasure Jr. Horse
“I’m a horse nut,” Jerome smiles. “I’ve been a horse nut all my life. I was a kid who fantasized about riding the horse in the sand of the desert or on the beach—the kid who sat at the shows and longed to be on the horse. You know the commandment, ‘Thou shalt not covet’? That was hard! I dreamed of owning those horses!” Even now, decades from his elementary school days, his high-octane energy makes it easy to see the eager little boy who sat for hours at the Minnesota State Fair, watching classes for everything from barrel racers to Hackney ponies. The story of how his education unfolded is familiar in the Arabian industry, but worth repeating because it supports his credibility today: how he learned about genetics from his father, a commercial turkey breeder; how his early mentors (Evelyn Burton and Hermann Blaser, and later Egyptian breeder Martin Loeber), impressed with his dedication, guided him through the horses and bloodlines of the time; how having little money forced him to apply himself relentlessly to keep up. And there is the now hilarious, but then not-so-funny, story of how he purchased a broodmare and booked her to *Bask before his parents realized what he’d done (his father cancelled the transactions).
Khlarion J (Khadraj NA x Gai Portia) full sibling to World Champion Kharrea PGA. Khilauea J (Khadraj NA x RA Kela) full sibling to National Champions Khash PGA & Khaberet PGA.
Mai Tai J (RA Aloha x Margarita J MPA Giovanni x Kenya PGA, by Khadraj NA)
Over the years, Larry bred and showed several breeds of animals—dogs, cattle, sheep, you name it, and he ran across the ubiquitous rejection newcomers often feel when they aren’t in “the right circles” and don’t have the funding to buy their way in. Jerome turned that into an asset. “Being told that I couldn’t do something fueled the fire,” he says. “To some degree, not being raised in those industries allowed me to open up and get ideas from a lot of people. I didn’t have to fight the ‘this is the way it’s done, so I have to’ thing. “One of the things I have always tried to convey to anyone who wants to breed horses is what you can learn from anyone out there—both what you want to do and what’s not a good idea. Don’t be so concrete in your thinking that you can’t go out there and learn. But at the end of the day, you have to like what you have.” On the other hand, he knows standards and understands that just because he thinks a horse is pretty or talented, that doesn’t make it an asset to the breed. “What’s been ingrained in my head since childhood was form and function,” he explains. “My vision is producing a healthy horse, with longevity, a good mind, beauty, and athletic ability.” To get the right balance, you must know what you’re dealing with. For instance, “You have to develop an understanding that some of these horses are exceptionally beautiful,” he says, “but if you have bombshells on both sides of the pedigree—

say, you see [an individual with] a tendency to get hot or rattled easily—you have to be careful. There’s a fine line of what you desire to be there and what you know needs to be there. You have to have common sense about it. And for me, it’s also got to be consistent.” In the beginning, as he raised his family, resources dictated that he send his mares (many Gainey-bred, so they reflected both extreme beauty and Crabbet-based athletic ability) mostly to regional stallions, and he was lucky, he says, that the upper Midwest featured so many good ones. But there were his “reach” horses as well, not so many, but ones that contributed to his dreams: Bay El Bey, in California; *Ansata Ibn Halima; *Morafic; Fadjur … headliners all. When the breed pursued such concepts as “pure Polish” and “straight Spanish,” Larry’s internal radar skewed away. “I could not totally understand that concept,” he says. “Why couldn’t you use a Polish or Spanish horse on a domestic?” Ever since he and Hermann Blaser partnered on 1985 Canadian National Champion LH Garcia, he has been intrigued with Spanish blood and Russian horses, particularly the *Salon line, as seen in Jerland’s phenomenally successful senior sire, *Khadraj NA. Today, *Khadraj NA is the all-time leading sire of western pleasure horses and prized for his hunter and working western standouts as well. In addition to *Khadraj, a quick glance at the current Jerland stallion roster tells the story. There is a lot of beauty, starting with MPA Giovanni, a U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt before an injury cut short his show career. Originally purchased to breed to *Khadraj daughters, he is a son of Da Vinci FM, with a dam line including Padrons Psyche and Ivanhoe Tsultan. Seven-year-old Khaja J is a son of *Khadraj, out of Promise V, Scottsdale and Brazilian National Cham-
Puccini J (WH Justice x Miss Giovanna)
“I’ve been a horse nut all my life. I was a kid who fantasized about riding the horse in the sand of the desert or on the beach—the kid who sat at the shows and longed to be on the horse. pion Mare, with Huckleberry Bey and Khemosabi blood. A Canadian National Top Ten halter horse and World Cup Silver Supreme Champion Yearling Colt, Khaja J proved talented at western pleasure as well. (And his full siblings Promisa J and Broken Promises PGA are national and regional champions too). Khaja’s son Kola J, now 4, offers Magnum Psyche and Fame VF on the dam side, and this year inaugurated a campaign in western pleasure that already includes a regional championship. And there’s RA Aloha, slated to reintroduce qualities that Larry feels have faded a bit in modern bloodlines. “That’s because we’ve been using so much shipped semen and embryo transfer that we’re narrowing our gene pool,” Larry admits. “I’m just as guilty as anyone else.” Eight-year-old RA Aloha has a unique pedigree. Bred via frozen semen, he is a son of 1987 U.S. National Champion Stallion Fame VF, and the only progeny of the Jullyen El Jamaal daughter, RA Mystical Rose, who in turn, is the only foal from the 1996 U.S. and Canadian National Champion Mare JBK Mystic Fawn, by Padrons Psyche.
It’s the mix of studying horses, their history, their successes, mixing and matching, and never ever being barn-blind, he proves. When it works, the rewards are sweet. “I didn’t buy an embryo from RH Triana to breed to Gio because of how great she was,” he notes. “It was the way she was bred. Put the Cytosk blood with Gio, and it’s worked for me consistently.” In 2017, it did again. Showing with Michael Byatt, Unforgettable J became the U.S. and Canadian National Champion Futurity Filly. “It’s like going through Lenita’s pastures,” Larry Jerome reflects. “It wasn’t just Ali Jamaal; it was the vision of the broodmares she chose too. It was no different at Sheila’s.” And, he might add, at Jerland. “[The right crosses] work time after time after time.”
U.S. & Canadian National Champion Futurity Filly Unforgettable J MPA Giovanni x RH Triana Khrave J (Khadraj NA x Crystal Blue Persuasion) 2018 Region 10 Champion H/A Western Pleasure Jr. Horse.
“He’s an old school horse; we’re tapping back into something we’ve been breeding away from,” Larry says. “I want that powerful hip, that great shoulder, that athletic ability, all of those things, and he’s a powerhouse. It’s not that I don’t have ‘power’—I do, with *Khadraj and the others—but he keeps the balance of it all and he’s a different dimension.” You can hear it in his voice: he’s still as excited as ever, blending bloodlines to strengthen the qualities he loves. “Now I’m looking for a bit of the old Egyptian exotic type and beauty. I don’t want to lose the wonderful long necks we’ve come to expect or the attitude we have developed; I just want to reemphasize that commanding presence we see in old paintings. What is most exciting for me is that I have so many phenomenal *Khadraj and Gio daughters that give me a foundation I can work with on some of these other stallions.” Some broodmare choices—genetic giants, in his parlance—illustrate his point. Gai Portia, a Gai Monarch daughter, produced Kharrea PGA for Petroglyph Arabians; at Palmetto Arabians, Kharrea became the dam of the hot young sire, PA Kid Khan. The cross of *Khadraj NA and Rhapsody In Gold yielded performance talent (multi-national titlist Khurb Appeal), as well as top halter quality (national champion Kharalisa BPA). And the grade mare Crystal Blue Persuasion, best known as the dam of multi-national champion Caliente Virtuoso, produced Half-Arabian champions Khartwright J, Kharried Away J, and Khrave J at Jerland. There are also his national champion and reserve in breeding stock/ hunter, Blue Moon J (MPA Giovanni x Ultra Violet Blue, by Cytosk), and Ultra Violet Blue’s *Khadraj son, Moonshine J, U.S. National Champion in halter and reserve in western pleasure. Also, perennial national top ten Sweet Violets J, by MPA Giovanni. The list goes on. The interweaving of bloodlines staggers the mind and racks up the accolades.

Rules & Regulations NUMBER OF ENTRIES IN CLASSES: All classes will be judged regardless of the number of entries.
SPLITTING OF CLASSES: According to Minnesota Arabian Horse Breeder Futurity Rules, each section of a futurity class is considered part of the same class. Show management will determine number of horses in any section of any class. The colts and fillies will be shown in separate halter classes. The only random draw for sections will not be with performance horses. No handler/rider may show more than one entry per class. Order of go according to age, oldest to youngest. Exhibitors will be required to check in with the Assistant Paddock Master prior to the start of the class to verify their position. PROTESTS: A protest must be filed as set forth in USEF GR603.
NO SHOWS: To expedite the flow of classes it would be appreciated if lastminute scratches were reported to the show office as quickly as possible. STALLIONS: Colts/Stallions may be shown by ladies or 18 and under exhibitors.
IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS: Every horse entered in this show will be assigned identification numbers. It is important for the proper handling of the show that the correct number be worn by rider/driver/handlers. Numbers will be marked clearly on the back with the horses name and class in which the horse is entered.
WHIPS: One whip or cropper handler allowed, however, whips are not mandatory and handlers are allowed to use items such as grass, hat and/ or treats to maintain horse’s attention in halter classes. Whips are to be no longer than 6’ (six feet) including the snapper/lash/appendage. Small appendages (no more than 12 inches in length) of ribbon, plastic, etc. are permitted. Excessive or improper use of a whip shall be basis for disqualification.
DISCIPLINE/ABUSE: If it is ascertained that any exhibitor has made or caused to be made any false statement in regard to any animal or article exhibited, or if any exhibitor shall attempt to interfere with any of the judges in the performance of his or her duties, said exhibitor shall be excluded from competing or exhibiting. Any act of discourtesy or disobedience to the officials of this show on the part of the owner, lessee, trainer, groom, rider, driver, or handler will disqualify the horse from adjudication. Show Management reserves the right to remove any of the above listed from the show without being liable for compensation or damages. (USEF Rule GR 302) Any action(s) against a horse by an exhibitor which are deemed excessive by a judge, USEF steward or show veterinarian, in the show ring or anywhere on the competition grounds may be punished by official warning, elimination or other sanctions that may be deemed appropriate by the Show Committee. The Judge shall make written findings of fact, which shall be delivered to the USEF steward with respect to any horse excused under this rule. Additional cause for mandatory elimination from the arena are a.) removal of eyelashes, b.) changing natural color of the mane/ tail, c.) balding the area around the eyes or proximal to the muzzle and nostrils. DRUGS AND MEDICATION: GR301.8: “To provide funds for research, inspection and enforcement of rules regarding use of medication and drugs, each recognized show must assess a Drug Fee of $23.00 for each horse entered in the show. At the end of a show, Show Management shall forward to the Association a sum representing the number of horses entered in the show, such to be held by the Association in a separate fund for use in accomplishing the purpose set forth above.”
IRS INFORMATION: Please note that the IRS requires us to have appropriate tax ID or Social Security numbers before we can issue any winnings check. Failure to report this information or providing erroneous identification can lead to substantial penalties. We take any possibility of identity theft very seriously, and do keep tax ID and SS numbers in strict confidence. If not enough horses in a (performance only) class to award prize money to a full top five, half the class will be provided full prize money and the remaining entrants will be awarded ribbons. All prize money will be sent within 60 days after close of the show. In the event of a protest, only the prize money in question will be escrowed until USEF makes a determination. In the event USEF upholds a protest, all affected placings will be adjusted and the reserve horse will receive its proper ribbons and prizes. and/or trainer(s) who are responsible for the child committing the offense. MAHB JUDGING PROCEDURE FOR YEARLING HALTER CLASSES: Judging of the yearling classes at the 2018 Fall Festival will utilize a comparative scoring system in the one round which will also serve as the Final. All Finals to be held in the Coliseum.
For the Finals, horses shall enter the ring at a trot and be lined up by the Ringmaster. The horses will be stood up by their Handlers and then be comparatively judged. The Judges will mark their cards 1st through 10th. Champion will be determined according to MAJORITY OPINION: the individual horse receiving the greatest number (majority) of first place votes from the total number of judges officiating will be awarded the title of CHAMPION. No points will be assigned to the ranked entries to determine the title of CHAMPION.
The entry with the most accumulated points from the remaining entries will be awarded the title of RESERVE CHAMPION. The Auction entry with the second highest accumulated score of the remaining entries will be awarded the title of THIRD PLACE. The Auction entry with the third highest accumulated score of the remaining entries will be awarded the title of FOURTH PLACE. The Auction entry with the fourth highest accumulated score of the remaining entries will be awarded FIFTH PLACE. The Auction entry with the fifth highest accumulated score of the remaining entries will be awarded the first position in the TOP TEN and so on until a full top ten has been awarded. We will be allowing those who are unable to run with their halter horses an option! Those halter handlers will be allowed to arrange a “runner” to run their halter horse into the arena and run them away from the judges following the center ring presentation. This person designated as the “runner”, must be an amateur, and may only run one horse per class. Halter handlers are responsible for finding and arranging their own runner. At the beginning of each class, halter handlers using a runner will enter the arena and stand on the east side of the center ring, and wait for their horse to come in. The runner will take the halter horse through the gate, and present the horse to the judges at the trot. When finished trotting, the runner will then hand off the horse to the halter handler and will take the halter handler’s place on the east side of center ring. There will be limited seats provided, as the runners will remain in the ring for the duration of the class. The halter handler will do the walk around and present their halter horses for adjudication in center ring. As the horse is nearing the end of it presentation to the judges, the runner will move into position to take the horse from the halter handler and do the trot away from the judges. Then once finished with the trot away, the runner will hand the halter horse back to the halter handler, who will be waiting on the east side of center ring. Halter handler will have the halter horse in his control for the remainder of the class. Runners will return to their seats east side of center ring, until the class is finished. The runner shall never be allowed to set the horse up at any time it is in the ring and also, if a person is a runner in a class, they may not also be showing in the same class.

HIS FUTURE IS NOW
by Theresa Cardamone
Euphoria is a magnificent swelling of emotion and intense excitement. When the owners of Stormy Skye
Arabians, LLC and their trainer/advisor Blake Skole heard that Razeer Serondella had just been named the unanimous Brazilian Gold National Champion Junior Colt, they were positively euphoric. Blake explains, “There was so much thrill and emotion,” he says. “It seemed like there was an eternity of silence
between when they announced Silver to when they announced Gold. But then the first words out of the
announcer’s mouth—which were in Portuguese—were ‘the unanimous.’ From there, it was a sea of emotions.” MN Breeders | 14 | Ar abian Horse Times
The celebration in the winners’ circle included Razeer’s breeder, Fabio Amorosino, friends from the United States and other people connected to him in Brazil. “Our good friend Luciano Cury, the president of the Brazilian Breeders’ Association, was one of the first guys to meet me in the arena,” recalls Blake. “He gave me a hug and congratulated me for having the vision to find the colt. For a man of his status to tell me that was a huge compliment.” Earlier this year, Blake had advised the owners of Stormy Skye Arabians, LLC to acquire the son of El Tino and Queen Ayda FWM as their future breeding stallion. What followed was a half-year odyssey of negotiations, examinations, and a carefully mapped-out strategy that culminated in Razeer Serondella’s triumph. The team’s plan included keeping the colt in show condition in Brazil and securing a national championship in his homeland before being exported to the United States. “Six months of preparation all came to a happy end,” says Blake with a grin. “We were very impressed with the quality of judging. The judges were, across the board through the whole horse show, very fair. Most everybody agreed on the first, second and third place horses. We were ecstatic to find that those noted judges made our colt—not once, but twice—unanimous champion; winning his age division and going on to be unanimous Gold Champion Junior Colt. He lit it up! There wasn’t a spotlight in the arena, and it was night time, but he created his own spotlight.” Ten days after the show, Razeer will begin the journey to his new home at Blake’s Cedar Heights Farm in Kansas City, Missouri. He will be carefully monitored to make sure that he is handling all of the changes well. “We’re going to put him on a plane, which can be stressful,” informs Blake. “Then he’ll be locked in a stall for seven days because they don’t have turnouts in the Miami quarantine. That can be hard on a young colt and can mess with him mentally. After interacting with the colt so much in Brazil, I believe he’s a really good-thinking colt. I don’t think it will be a problem for him, but I am going to stick with my original comment that we are going to let the horse dictate what is going to happen for him in the future.” The primary focus now is to collect Razeer next spring and try to get some mares in foal. “He was bought to be a breeding stallion,” says Blake. “He’s a national champion now. If he never steps foot in the ring again, he’s accomplished more than 99% of the world.” And, with less than a year in the business
under their belts, the Stormy Skye team has already selected, promoted and shown a national champion. If Razeer travels well and acclimates to his new surroundings, there is a possibility that he will make his first public appearance in the United States at the 2018 Minnesota Fall Fest stallion auction. The prestigious event creates an opportunity to unveil Razeer to the American public in a noncompetitive way. Blake Skole explains, “Being presented at an auction doesn’t create a horse show environment. Razeer doesn’t have to be judged by judges, he can just be judged by the crowd of people. And they can take in a colt that is very enamoring to watch; you have a hard time taking your eyes off him!” “His owners love the word team,” says Blake. “Our team made a plan, we focused on it. The stars aligned for us to have the right moment, at the right time, with the right horse here in Brazil. Razeer Serondella is a reigning National Champion. His future is not a year from now or two years from now. His future is now.”
