REGION 10’S CONWAY ARABIANS: A TRADITION OF GIVING BACK TO THE ARABIAN HORSE by Catherine Cole Ferandelli

Lori Conway is celebrating over a decade as President of the Minnesota Arabian Horse Association (MAHA), the largest club in Region 10, and the Conways are tireless givers of their time, experience and forward-thinking wisdom. Lori and husband, Peter, are the proud owners of Conway Arabians, the 2018 APAHA Breeder of the Year. Along with daughters Rachel and resident trainer Anna, Conway Arabians is truly a family affair. They consistently produce, promote, and show champion Arabian horses in most of the disciplines featured at many

shows. But at a regional level, Conway Arabians only shows at Region 10. “Region 10 is consistently an incredibly competitive regional competition,” Lori says. “The facility and show committee are awesome. The numbers were down due to a roof collapse and damage to the facility over the prior winter; but the Region 10 show definitely had quality competition.” One of Conway Arabians’ formidable entries was their gleaming black/ bay Western Pleasure Junior Horse stallion, Cool River Kid. Shown by trainer Jennifer Schmitt, “River” has won three of the four classes he has been entered in. Born on the Fourth of July, 2015, Cool River Kid already has several 2019 weanlings on the ground with multiple Conway and outside mares bred for the 2020 foaling season. Cool River Kid will be one to watch in the 2019 U.S. Nationals AWPA class! The Unanimous U.S. National Champion, Scottsdale and Buckeye

Park Horse and 2018 APAHA Saddle Seat Horse of the Year winner, Coltrane, is Conway’s other young stallion, making his mark with trainer Joel Kiesner. Coltrane’s foals are already in high demand and his very first foal crop will be making their debut in the 2020 shows. Lori happily reports, “We purchased Coltrane as a two-year-old with high hopes for him to become a top breeding horse for our program and a competitive Saddle Seat horse. His conformation, fancy movement and glorious black coat make him an eye stopping show horse. Coltrane has exceeded all our expectations and is now an integral part of Conway Arabians’, as well as several other prominent breeders’ programs.” Conway Arabians is a veritable “horse heaven” surrounded by 400 acres, much of which is pasture land for the carefully selected broodmare band and the raising of their offspring.

“Region 10 made a pact some time ago to not allow double judge horse shows within our Region. By doing so, each club has been able to have a successful horse show and remain viable. We cover a large geographical area serving nearly 1,000 members in 12 clubs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and eastern South Dakota with a wide variety of interests. Something that is unique to Region 10 is the “Arabians Unplugged show circuit,” which provides an outlet for Arabian horse owners to have a place to compete without all the expense and regulations that the rated shows require, and still have the opportunity to have fun showing.” It is this energy, effort and good will, that makes Peter and Lori Conway industry leaders for the Arabian horse as a whole and throughout Region 10. n

“All of our horses are raised outside in a group environment,” Lori elaborates. “This allows them to develop their minds and bodies as horses should. They are free to gallop up and down hills, building strong bones and tendons. The varied terrain teaches them to balance and use themselves naturally to their best advantage. We generally start our youngsters when they are three years old, giving them time to socialize and grow up together before they start living in the barn.” With the 155th Conway Arabians foal born in 2019, one would imagine Lori and Peter to have more than enough tasks to fill their days, but the Conways mission to promote the Arabian horse breed is yet another admirable effort they choose to do. Among many undertakings, Peter is deeply involved as the AEPA President and AHA Board Member. Lori’s energies are focused on other AHA obligations as well, such as AHA-ESRE Committee Chair, APAHA Treasurer, judging many AHA/USEF rated shows, and lending assistance to 4-H, FFA and AHA youth judging endeavors. Lori recognizes that Region 10 has “many hardworking movers and shakers that are very involved in many committees and facets of promoting the Arabian breed locally and on a national level.” Elaborating further, Lori shares,

We breed, raise, train and compete with Arabians & Half-Arabians in the saddle seat, hunter and western pleasure divisions at all levels. Peter - AHA BOD, Breeders Sweepstakes, AEPA Lori - MAHA President, APAHA Treasurer, AHA - ESRE Chair What do you feel Region 10 does really well? Region 10 is loaded with dedicated and very involved people, in all facets of the Arabian breed. Years ago, Region 10 made a pact to not allow double judged shows. That decision has provided each club the opportunity to have their own unique show, tailored to be fun and successful. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? Conway Arabians had a VERY successful show! When CA is announced as the breeder of a horse being awarded a ribbon, it is a “feel good” moment. Fortunately, we bred many of the champions and personally, we won a lot of very competitive classes, so there were lots of “best moments” of the horse show. Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that?

There are a lot of wonderful facilities which have top notch trainers and instructors in our region. It also helps that many of the training barns have a strong youth and adult lesson program, which keeps the Arabian market vibrant. The amateur owner, trained and shown group have fun together too! What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? CA does a lot of outreach. We hold events at the farm, help with the judging teams, support 4-H, and our doors are always open to the public year-round. We are very involved in the MN AHA club and the two shows that they put on, as well as the Minnesota Arabian Horse Breeders show and auction. What do you think can be done to encourage small breeders to breed more? Make it affordable. To help get people involved, we offered some of our great mares to be leased, as well as stallion breedings, for a nominal cost. Several people took us up on this offer and will be having their first foal(s) next year. What better way to get someone started in owning an Arabian?

YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY: Since youth What is your involvement in the Arabian horse breed? I am a breeder, trainer and owner of Strand’s Arabian Stables, and a level one judge. What do you feel Region 10 does really well? With the warm-up pens added, the Region 10 Championship is a very easy place to show, very exhibitor friendly, and a very nice arena to show in. It runs smoothly and is very accommodating. They throw a great exhibitor party and generally grow every year. One thing the region does very well is having fewer shows than some other regions, so the shows that they do have are larger and the numbers are better. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? There wasn’t just one moment. Everyone had good rides and a good time. It was a successful show.

Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? I think the region has a lot of very strong lesson programs that are getting people started. They are very youth friendly, having a lot of barns that are willing to take youth beginners. What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? I do training clinics which helps keep people involved. We also do farm tours to horse colleges, where they come out and spend a day riding, learning about the Arabian industry and seeing our farm. JDRF ( Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is a high priority to us personally, so we work with them to auction off a ‘Derby Party’ at our facility every year, which allows us to bring awareness of the Arabian horse to a community of people who may or may not know anything about horses at all!

I think they provide a great, well-run show that is very strong in our amateur and youth divisions. They also do a great job fundraising and providing opportunities for the outside community. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? We had one of our best Region 10 shows ever. We had great results due to hard work, great clients, incredible staff and amazing horses.

Region 10â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? There are a lot of great lesson programs in our area that bring newcomers in. Our lead line class and stick horse classes were huge which is great for our future! What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? I like to do clinics and show at some of our local open shows, showing people what great horses our Arabians are. We have a very strong Arabians Unplugged circuit. I enjoy going to the open shows and offering help to those that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the resources or like to do their own thing.

YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY: 10 What is your involvement in the Arabian horse breed? I am an assistant trainer at McConaughey Training Centre. What do you feel Region 10 does really well? Region 10 does a great job of getting youth involved through activities throughout the show. They provide a very organized and well-run show. Kudos to Chuck Rickart who does a great job getting classes into the arena promptly. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? There were so many great moments from this year’s show. I’m most proud of our clients and horses accomplishing their goals and succeeding.

Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? Region 10 has great Class A shows throughout the year, which gets people excited about the regional show. Region 10 has a lot of great barns in the area that provide lesson programs and opportunities for newcomers. What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? One of my favorite things to do when not working is trail ride. I think it is great for the show horses to do something different and people are amazed to see how well the Arabian show horses are on the rides.

Jeff & Roxanne: We compete as professional trainers at the National level, host youth judging team education at our family owned farm, and almost everything in-between. We have served on AHA committees and acted as delegates at the Annual AHA Convention. Jerry: I am involved in all aspects. My days are filled with caring for the horses and keeping my friendships strong with those I show with. What do you feel Region 10 does really well? Jeff & Roxanne: Region 10 works extremely hard to be accommodating to every discipline and all walks of Arabian life. At every turn, you witness passionate Arabian enthusiasts that give of their time and knowledge while possessing the core belief that the Arabian horse is good for a person’s soul. It’s a great place. Jerry: Region 10 is a wonderful place to show. It is a nice time of the year in Minnesota and the show arena (or coliseum, as it is better known) is great! Region 10 has some top breeders, so it’s a show that has some of the best young prospects attending. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? Jeff & Roxanne: The special string of purebred halter horses that we were afforded the opportunity to show won numerous regional titles. Additionally, Roxanne rode two beautiful purebred junior horses to a regional championship each.

The Region 10 judges have historically rewarding, outstanding performances. Jerry: My highlight was my daughter riding! The thrill was that she had a beautiful ride, but the win did not hurt! Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? Jeff & Roxanne: Our Region 10 is packed with true horsemen and horsewomen, both professionals and amateurs, that devote such energy to our breed. We believe that this enthusiasm fuels a love and hunger for knowledge and opportunity. The numerous training centers and breeders in our area makes it a successful region. Jerry: Region 10 has great competition, so the youth and amateurs have fun showing their horses. The farms of region 10 promote good sportsmanship and the exhibitors create friendships at the horse events. What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? Jeff & Roxanne: Shada has hosted a number of open houses, parties and gatherings over the years to introduce the Arabian horse to new people. As far as we are concerned, our door is always open. Recently, we were delighted to be chosen as one of the sites for the Arabian Registry Commission’s Annual meeting place. Jerry: Farm tours. Word of mouth is the best way to educate new people about the Arabian horse and a direct hands-on approach.

YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY: 40 What is your involvement in the Arabian horse breed? I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that bred high quality Arabians. I am very proud to continue with my parents’ bloodlines eight generations later. I have ridden and trained all those generations except for the most recent, a weanling colt by Inception, who is obviously still too young. What do you feel Region 10 does really well? I was involved on the Region 10 Board of Delegates for many years. I felt it was a remarkable group of people because it really succeeded in acting as a region by looking out for the whole group’s interest and mission. There were no Wisconsin versus Minnesota club battles. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? The best moment of any Region 10 show is always sitting in the amazing, historic old Horse Barn on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and remembering all of the great people and fun times that have passed through my life in that building, back to when I was a teenager. The stories that barn could tell!

Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? The trainers in Region 10 have modernized their businesses with bigger and better lesson programs and enhanced focus on serving the Amateur and Youth riders. Additionally, there are several barns and groups of do it yourself amateurs who enjoy stabling together and helping each other. What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? I have a big lesson program and I also do outreach through occasional Open Barns. In truth, I reach out to promote horsemanship first and foremost, because most new people really are not breed conscious. They are just horse curious! Then they buy an Arabian when they’ve gained some skills. What do you think can be done to encourage small breeders to breed more? Create more competent users and owners for our horses through lesson programs. It’s the only way, really. Breeders need a market. To have a market, you have to have people who have enough knowledge to want to be owners.

What do you feel Region 10 does really well? Region 10 does a great job of giving back! The Wounded Warrior fundraiser was just one of the many examples.

Region 10â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? A contributing factor to our strong youth and amateur classes, is the fact that our qualifying shows have really catered to them. In May, there is even a show specifically for youth and select riders. Convenience and the ability to qualify for regionals really brings the numbers up.

What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? Winning the championship in the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Jr. Horse on DB Moondance. This mare was bought to be a family horse, but soon proved to have so much talent and try. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun to win on a horse that gives 100 percent!

What do you think can be done to encourage small breeders to breed more? Everything is so expensive! I realize that everything costs money, but it does feel like AHA has found a way to nickel and dime everything. I really hope we can find a way to make it a little more affordable for breeders and owners.

by COLLEEN SCOTT It’s an all female cast behind Cedar Ridge Arabians, Jordan, Minn., an icon in the Arabian industry for 50 years. With Lollie and Lara now at the helm, and three talented young women running the training, showing and lesson program, the team is a force to be reckoned with–both at home and in the show ring. Specializing in the English divisions, which have historically been more male- than femaledominated, this three-woman team consists of: Head Trainer Laura Rodel, Assistant Trainer Erin Belton, and Lesson Director Stephanie Davisson. AHT takes a look at how this trio is making inroads in an ever evolving industry.

e Rig t Start The Ames family’s love of beautiful and athletic horses has provided the base for a more than fourdecade old breeding program. Using some of the most well-known and sought-after sires and dams, the horses coming into the training barn already have the lineage to be successful. That’s when Erin Belton comes in–to build upon that foundation. The newest member of the Cedar Ridge staff, Erin started in January and specializes in working with the two- and three-year-olds. “What we really try to be sure of is that we handle and start them in such a way that they’ll be very amateur-friendly in the future,” she says. Riding since she was four years old, Erin grew up with Saddlebreds, making the switch to Arabians when she was 17. Prior to coming to Cedar Ridge, she was an assistant trainer at Stachowski Farms. “What I really like about Cedar Ridge and our training and showing program is that everyone is very supportive,” she says. “We have a great group of people and that draws even more people.” Client Deb Schmelz echoes that. She and her daughter, Eliana, 12, both ride. “Our experience has been positive. We are impressed with the overall management of the barn, training, grooms and operations. But one of the things we appreciate about our trainers is their ability to communicate, willingness to listen and help us overcome obstacles,” says Deb.

Once the young horses have a good base, Head Trainer Laura Rodel takes the reins to finish them for the show ring. Part of the Cedar Ridge team for four years, Laura began riding when she was nine, and got her first Arabian when she was 15. “At the time, we did everything with one horse, so Booqinn was my all-around horse,” she recalls. “After I got him, I fell in love with Arabians.” At 16, Laura got hooked on riding in the English divisions and started focusing her efforts on honing those skills. Besides riding, Laura participated in youth judging contests for seven years, traveling to U.S. Nationals and Scottsdale to judge. “My last year at U.S. Nationals, we were second. We never could quite win it,” she says of her Minnesota-based team. With her riding, showing and youth judging experience as a base, Laura has a well-rounded view of what success should look like in the show ring and has been able to use that experience to achieve great local, regional and national results not only with the Cedar Ridge owned horses, but also with client horses. She and Stephanie recently returned from Youth Nationals where their team of eight competitors brought home multiple titles. “The best part of this job is watching the horses become the best they can be,” she says. “And what’s even better is watching them go on to do that with their riders or new owners.” Of the 42 horses in the training barn, about half are client horses and half Cedar Ridge-owned horses. “We seem to be bringing in more and more clients all the time,” she says. “And that’s really exciting.” Laura attributes some of her success to the great trainers Cedar Ridge has brought in over the years to help her. “I have learned so much from other people in this industry and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful team of people.” Part of her success is having the keen eye and talent of Erin. “We both work with almost all of the horses,” she says. “I’ll take a group for a couple of weeks, she’ll take a group for a couple of weeks, and then we’ll switch. Having both of us work them helps us stay well-rounded and gives us the opportunity to solve training challenges together.”

Starting New Riders Besides starting young horses successfully and showing them successfully, the Cedar Ridge team is committed to bringing

new people into the industry, a vision that starts at the top with the unwavering and significant support of the Ames family. Through the Cedar Ridge lesson program, new people are introduced to the breed all the time, with many of them going on to show and become horse owners. Under the leadership of Lesson Director Stephanie Davisson, the number of people taking lessons has grown exponentially since her arrival at Cedar Ridge six years ago. “There was a lesson program in place, but I knew I wanted to make it bigger,” she says. Now, with more than 60 lessons a week, she has accomplished just that. Stephanie’s roots in the industry go back to when she was just 3, practically a toddler. “My grandmother had a hobby farm, and my mom was a national champion back in the 1980s, so I was surrounded with Arabians from a very young age,” she says. At 12, she started helping get lesson horses ready, and at 15 she started giving lessons. When it came time for college, Stephanie enrolled in an International Studies program. “That lasted about six months,” she laughingly recalls. “Then I transferred to the University of Kentucky and switched to Equine Studies.” The day after graduation, Stephanie landed a job with Mike Lamb Show Horses and worked under his leadership for four years. Since her start in the industry, Stephanie has noticed a gradual shift in what is sometimes perceived as a male-dominated industry. “I feel like it’s definitely becoming more open to women and we’re seeing some new people rise to the top,” she says. “But it can be a difficult industry to break through. As younger women, we just need to be very confident and positive about what we are doing as it feels like we may be watched more than others are.” Indeed, if people are watching the Cedar Ridge dynamic trio, it’s to learn how to be young, successful, talented women in the industry. With plenty of show ring accolades, highly competitive amateurs and a platform for growing the industry, they have set a very high bar. ■

The 2019 Region 10 Championships Quality And Camaraderie

s it is with all serious competitors, the overall quality of a regional level show is of the utmost importance. This year’s Region 10 Championship Show, held June 12-16 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, provides that quality every horseman/woman, competitor and spectator appreciates and strives to be part of. Show Committee member Laura Mickelson expresses, “The quality of competition this year was amazing. The western and hunter classes had a fair number of entries with many classes having 10 or more. The amateur classes were especially deep with multiple national winners.” She went on to compliment the youth division, “I was especially pleased with the size of the walk/trot and lead line classes; each of which had more than 10 entries! The lead line class held a variety of future, strong competitors as they represented multiple disciplines, including native costume and side-saddle.” REGION 10 | 30 | Ar abian Horse Times

The passionate spirit of Region 10 shined through its competitors, with their engaging, positive attitudes and their expressions of pride as they entered and exited the show ring, regardless of the ribbon they received. The impressive camaraderie and admirable support given by spectators and competitors alike was the highlight of the show. When leaving the show ring, competitors were eager to take pictures with their horse, fellow competitors and friends; a truly touching moment to witness! Along with the quality of competition, the facilities are top notch, especially the arena, which did not disappoint. All levels and disciplines can agree that the footing and size of a show ring is super important to maintain the health, quality and comfortability of horse, rider and handler, and exhibitors to the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum were reassured that the quality and amount of soil (dirt, footing) met the standards and requirements that all show rings should be subjected to. Not only is Warner’s footing superior, it is large enough to hold a multiple horse class and is one of the most fun and exciting places to show in the country. With long, straight rails, deep corners, and a huge seating section, one feels like a super star when trotting up the tunnel into a brightly lit arena with cheering heard all around! Philanthropy, camaraderie, passion and fun … these were the themes of this year’s Region 10, and four words describing the amazing fundraisers and events that were held surrounding the All Glory Project’s “Campaign of Consciousness.” On Friday night, all attendees of the show were invited to an “All-American Evening,” sponsored by Equine Athlete Veterinary Services. People enjoyed BBQ, BBQ music, dancing, and a “hot” duo called 2 On Point, who put on an impressive performance of fire eating! The main performer, Brett “the Axe” possesses a natural aptitude for handling fire, so much so he earned the title of the Fastest Fire Eater in the World in the 2017 Guinness Book of World Records. Amongst a community of individuals who are already so supportive of one another, the stream of consciousness flowing throughout the Region 10 community of those so willing to give back was priceless. In conjunction with Horses For Humanity, Arabians Salute Our Heroes sponsors raised an impressive $24,100 to benefit the All Glory Project’s therapeutic riding programs for veterans. From $20 Memorial Stars which could be purchased to add the name of a veteran, to numerous Red, White and Blue Sponsors, many were eager to support our heroes. In addition, three veterans from Freedom Farm Therapeutic Riding Center were recognized Saturday evening. Jonelle Wilson, Dave Teigen and Terry Bremen, as well as a Freedom Academy high school student, Savannah Salir, were all presented with the “Salute our Heroes” yellow garland. All were truly overwhelmed by the recognition and donations, especially the surprise of 500 pounds of horse feed to Freedom Farm. Thank you all! Another emotional moment was the Arabian Pleasure Driving Open class on Saturday morning. Dedicated to Dick Ames, a Memorial Fund was created celebrating his passionate and giving heart. “The best way to honor such a man,” Mickelson shared, “was to provide funds every year to reward people who show horses in Arabian Country Pleasure Driving and Reining, disciplines close to his heart.” The winner of the class was photographed next to a flattering, framed picture of the legend himself. “Fiery” would describe Dick’s extraordinary personality, and his presence was truly missed by all this year. Those who attend the Region 10 Championship Show are a welcoming community of passionate and competitive horsemen and women. What do you feel Region 10 does really well? There is family involvement in Region 10. Much of the American history of the Arabian horse began in Region 10 and 11. These are the home states of Albert Harris, Daniel Gainey and the Kellogg family. Today, the family tradition continues with many multi-generational farms that breed horses and compete together. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? Eleanor’s Arabians had a wonderful Region 10 this year. EAF Hesa Enterprise was third in the H/A Reining, EAF Hesa Comet won the PB Reining Jr. Horse (both horses ridden by Rod Matthiesen), Hesa Artfull Zee won the PB Reining with Gary Ferguson and Madison Rose and her brother Justin were Champion and Reserve in both the Showmanship At Halter JTH and the Western Horsemanship JTR with Sheza Melody Jac and Hesa Sweet Dreams (Madison winning Halter and Justin winning the riding class).

Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? Family involvement, as well as large and tight-knit statewide relationships among breeders and exhibitors. What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? The Working Western Celebration show September 12-15, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin is a multi-breed show that includes Reining, Cow Horse, Cutting, Roping and Ranch Horse with events sanctioned by numerous breed groups including the AHA. It’s advertised all over the Midwest and attracts a crowd. What do you think can be done to encourage small breeders to breed more? New buyers are attracted by affordable prices and sound, trained horses, as well as affordable shows where they are welcome, can have fun and can compete comfortably. People want well trained horses suitable for kids, trainers and even old ladies like me! Small breeders appear, breed and thrive where there is a market for their horses.

YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY: 27 What is your involvement in the Arabian horse breed? I am the lesson program director and Assistant Farm Manager of Cedar Ridge Arabians. What do you feel Region 10 does really well? Region 10 promotes a spirit of healthy and fun competition, as well as camaraderie. The barns all work together well to promote the greater good of the Arabian breed, such as this year’s fundraiser, earning over $24,000. It’s a fun environment with great people and horses. What was the best moment of the Region 10 show this year for you? Seeing how well CRA functions as a team. Even with 19 of our 21 horses showing in the same session and up to five in a class, there was never a hiccup or panic; no stress or tension. It was fun to see the hard work come together and be rewarded as well.

What kind of events are you involved with or happen in your area to promote the Arabian horse to new people? CRA offers an open barn to the public yearly. This year’s celebration of 50 wonderful years in business will be huge! Along with that, we run an Arabian lesson program and support the local academy classes, starting from the bottom up! What do you think can be done to encourage small breeders to breed more? Answering on behalf of Cedar Ridge Arabians, we need to continue to implement the money programs that benefit breeders. Sweepstakes and MAHB are two great examples of why small breeders would want to continue. It is also important to recognize breeders when announcing winners in classes.

Region 10’s Youth and Amateur following is very strong. What do you think attributes to that? The great atmosphere at the Region 10 show helps promote Youth and Amateur attendance.
