SPRING 2018 For horse breeders, the promise of spring begins to unfold long before the first crocus emerges from the frosty ground or the first daffodil smiles up at a warming sun. It comes with the sound of straw swishing against a mare’s legs as she circles her stall, pausing to stamp her feet in annoyance at the deepening contractions. It comes with the uniquely sweet scent of placental waters being broken and with the soft nicker of the mother as she stretches her neck in a graceful arch to touch her baby for the first time. Snow may be piled high outside the barn walls, but inside, spring has already emerged; unfolding itself on the spindly legs of a newborn foal.

It is heartening to see that, all over the world, Arabian horse associations are striving to find ways to support and honor both large and small breeders. Futurity programs offer monetary prizes that can help fund breeders’ dreams. Stallion service auctions can allow a person of lesser means a way to access remarkable horses to upgrade their programs. The ease of using frozen and shipped semen and the ability to buy an embryo of a great mare are modern innovations that have also opened the door to more opportunity for more breeders. In Europe and the Middle East, parallel shows and awards for local or smaller breeders are held in conjunction with shows that attract the larger farms and training stables. In Qatar, citizens have been able to utilize world-caliber stallions at no cost through the generosity of big breeders. It is critical to the future of the breed that we continue to explore how to support all Arabian horse breeders, both the large and the small. We are the custodians of the breed, and it is up to us to provide ways to nurture both the horses and the people who spend their lives creating them. That is how to ensure a healthy future for the Arabian horse.

AMETY B
B
Bill and Terry Gregory stood looking at the scraggly colt standing knee-deep in mud through the steel bars of the small pipe corral where he had been kept. His eyes wide with suspicion, the skinny bay snorted his apprehension, a short, frayed length of rope dangling from his too-tight halter. More than a little on the wild side, with overgrown hooves and a matted mane, he had clearly been handled very little. Alerted by a friend and fellow Arabian horse-lover as to the plight of the colt, his full sister, and their dam, the Gregorys had come to remove the horses to their new home at Ventura Farms in California. Fate is a fickle thing. If not for that word-of-mouth rescue, the Arabian horse world may never have known one of its most influential and successful mares. You see, the unmanageable colt who seemed destined to become a riding gelding at best, was Bask El Amigo, a son of Bask from his last foal crop. He would leave an indelible mark on the breed as the sire of Amiga-B, herself the dam of the incomparable producer Amety B. Bred in America by Cindy Draper, Amety B is one of the most prolific mares in Arabian history. Foaled in 1997, she is already the mother of 26 registered offspring, with at least two more foals due in 2018 via embryo transfer. A feminine bay with enormous eyes and an excess of refinement and attitude, Amety B is by United States and Canadian National Champion Eternety—a son of Sharem El Sheikh—making him an El Shaklan grandson, with heavy doses of Polish blood through the beautifully bred Hal Gazal (Eleuzis x Bufa, by Negatiw) and a dam line rooted in England. Amety B is out of Amiga-B, who resembles her grandsire Bask, the legendary Polish stallion who changed the course of the Arabian breed when he was imported to the USA by Lasma Arabians in the 1960s. He was a U.S. National Champion Stallion and a U.S. National Champion Park horse who sired innumerable U.S. and Canadian National champions in both halter and a variety of disciplines under saddle, including English, park,

western and driving. Bask was crossed with his own granddaughter, Judith-B in order to produce Bask El Amigo. Judith-B comes from a Polish sire, Buszmen (Negatiw x Busznica, by Faher), who was a threetime Scottsdale Champion Stallion in the 1970s as well as a U.S. National Reserve Champion and Canadian National Champion. Her Crabbet dam line stretches all the way back to the importation to England of the desert bred mare Dajania by Lady Anne and Wilfrid Blunt in 1878. The same cross that resulted in Bask El Amigo—Bask on Judith-B—produced the exquisite Basks Maria, who topped the first Ventura Farms auction with a bid of over $700,000 in the mid-80s. Bask El Amigo was bred to Juwel—a mare with a lovely blend of Egyptian breeding through the dry refinement of Ramses Fayek, Polish breeding Eternety

Amety B A and added type through National Champion Aramus (Nabor x Amneris, by Amurath Shahib); and Crabbet breeding on the dam line—in order to give Amiga-B. Crossing Amiga-B to the elegant Eternety was the final piece in the puzzle needed to create Amety B, a mare capable of founding her own female dynasty. In the first three generations of Amety B’s immediate family, there are eight individual horses with nine national championships between them, earned in places all over the globe from Canada and the United States to Spain and Brazil. An additional five individuals contributed to the current total of thirteen reserve national championships now in the family coffers. A world reserve champion and scores of top tens and gold champions can also be found on the Amety B family tree. Her tree is so laden with golden fruit, it is a wonder that it can bear the weight of any additional honors! And yet, the descendants of Amety B are currently competing and winning and adding to that total monthly at top exhibitions all over the world.
While it is easy to applaud such in-your-face success after the fact, it took that helpful hand of fate to guide Amety B to the astute breeders who would shepherd her to her lofty position in the top echelon of Arabian broodmares. After beginning with performance horses, Roger and Stephanie McMahon were focused on finding a foundation mare for the f ledgling halter program at their Running Horse Ranch in Cashmere, WA. Call it beginner’s luck or the culmination of intense research, the first mare they acquired for that task was Amety B, a lightly shown champion as a 2-year-old. What makes that choice even more poignant is the fact that the mare was a gift to Stephanie from her husband. “Roger calls her the gift that keeps on giving,” Stephanie relates, “because she started having amazing fillies immediately and never stopped producing. He insists that the foals are a continuation of the original gift!”

And what a gift it has been, not only for Stephanie McMahon, but for the future of the Arabian horse. It did not take long for Amety B to serve notice of her lasting value to the breed. As the McMahons eagerly awaited her first foal, the sire of which was the great Magnum Psyche (Padrons Psyche x A Fancy Miracle, by Sasaki), even they could not have dreamed of such a spectacular result. It was abundantly clear from her earliest moments that Amelia B was an exceptional foal. A brilliant red chestnut with the fire and attitude of her illustrious sire line masterfully combined with the femininity and outstanding conformation of her dam, Amelia B was the living image of a breeder’s dream. In 2002, Amelia B became the first of an unprecedented three daughters of Amety B to be named United States National Champion Yearling Filly. Amelia B also won Canadian

National Reserve Championships as a 2- and 3-year-old and was the 2004 Arabian Breeders World Cup Champion Mare. More importantly, she is herself the dam of multiple national champions and other winners who are now producing international champions themselves. Amelia B’s son Eccentric Valentino, by DA Valentino, was the 2011 U.S. National Champion 4-5 Year Stallion and 2010 Canadian National Champion Futurity Colt, with reserve national championships in both countries as well. Upon his exportation to Brazil, he was named the 2012 Brazilian National Reserve Champion Stallion and is proudly owned by Luciana Fasano’s Fazenda Floresta, one of Brazil’s most admired farms. In America, he is the sire of U.S. National Champion Half-Arabian Gian Paul out of the Arabian/Saddlebred mare Countess Versace and additional top ten winners.
| 70 | Spring 2018
Amety B A While Eccentric Valentino was earning his Brazilian title, his full brother Vaalente was taking home the equivalent prize for Junior Stallions – a truly remarkable accomplishment for full siblings. Vaalente has since become one of the best stallions standing in Brazil. The same DA Valentino x Amelia B cross produced double-U.S. Youth National Reserve Champion Aramis LBA, who won those titles in halter and in hunter pleasure in 2015, with five additional top ten wins through 2016, and his full brother Amelio LBA, a U.S. National Top Ten Gelding. Amelia B is also the dam of 2009 Brazilian National Champion Junior Colt Mazarati LBA, by Mazkarade. The Amelia B branch of the family has become very strong in both North and South America, as her sons and grandsons have made their names as sires in addition to their show wins. Through her Da Vinci FM daughter, Serafina FM, Amelia B is the granddam of 2017 Canadian Reserve National Champion Futurity Colt, RD Trivago, by Bey Ambition.
Astute breeders know better than to sit on their success, even one as heady as the homerun of the Magnum Psyche and Amety B cross. Following that innovative philosophy led Running Horse Ranch to be among those who chose to breed to Marwan Al Shaqab early on. The McMahons were at the U.S. Nationals and had heard all the talk about the stallion that Michael Byatt was going to show. After arranging for a quick look at the horse back in the barn prior to his qualifying class, they wrote a check on the spot to pay for a breeding. Of course, Marwan Al Shaqab was destined to mold the contemporary Arabian halter horse in his image. The decision to breed Amety B to Marwan proved to be a fabulous success that was repeated over and over again with the same incredible results. It was a golden cross in the true sense of the phrase.

Goddess Of Marwan
Goddess of Marwan was the first in a series of remarkable full sisters and their offspring who have dominated the U.S. Nationals in recent years. She followed Amelia B as the second U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly from Amety B, winning the title in 2006. Goddess of Marwan then set out to demonstrate the durability and genetic dominance of her dam line. Her daughter Goddess of Da Vinci, by Da Vinci FM, was herself a U.S. National Reserve Champion Yearling Filly and later a U.S. National Champion Mare AAOTH for her present owner, Stella Bella Arabians. She has already produced at least three U.S. top ten winners of her own. Her full brother, Brontes FM, was named the 2013 U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion AAOTH and was a U.S. National Top Ten Stallion in 2017.

Amety B A In 2008, it was Goddess of Marwan’s full sister Princess of Marwan who upheld the family tradition by garnering the U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly award, the third time in six years that the title went to a daughter of Amety B. As if that were not enough, Princess of Marwan had one more engagement to keep that year, this time in Paris. Australian horseman Jeff McGlinn, who had purchased Princess from the McMahons for his Mystica Arabians before the Nationals, decided to bring her across the Atlantic to compete for the world crown. The outing was a huge success, with Princess of Marwan winning the title of 2008 World Reserve Champion Junior Filly. In recent years, Princess of Marwan has
found a new home at the Ajman Stud of Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, the Crown Prince of Ajman. Her first foal for Ajman Stud is the beautiful Aj Banafsaj, who was named the 2017 UAE Local Bred Gold Champion Yearling Filly in her show debut. Duchess of Marwan took up the baton from her illustrious full sisters, earning top ten honors as a yearling at the U.S. Nationals before producing an amazing string of offspring of her own, many sired by the ultra-refined JJ Bellagio (Magnum Psyche x Joyeuse NY). When covered by JJ Bellagio, Duchess never failed to produce

something special. Their daughter Arianna CS was a 2015 U.S. National Top Ten 2-Year-Old and Junior Mare, but it was their jet-black son, Artemas GA, who first brought attention to the cross when he was named 2015 Scottsdale Champion Yearling Colt and Arabian Breeders World Cup Silver Champion earlier that year. Artemas crossed the ocean to win the Gold Championship in Strohen, Germany, under the expert handling of Frank SpĂśnle, adding the Most Classic Head award at Menton, France. Artemas GA finished his season with a top ten at the Arabian World Championships for owner Stella Bella Arabians. The most recent of the full siblings to hit the show ring are a pair foaled in 2015 via embryo transfer. Bella Duchessa GA, a bay filly, won the U.S. National Reserve Champion Yearling Filly honors in 2017, after earning the Arabian National Breeder Finals Silver championship as a weanling. Her black full brother, Lucius GA, was

named the Gold Champion Weanling Colt at the same National Breeder Finals show before adding ABWC Silver Champion and U.S. National Top Ten Yearling wins in 2017. When bred to Da Vinci FM, Duchess of Marwan had the lovely Duchess of Davinci, who did her part in perpetuating the Amety B family’s hold on yearling filly honors, earning both the U.S. National Top Ten Yearling Filly and Top Ten Junior Mare titles in 2014. More recently, Duchess of Davinci won the 2017 Bronze Champion mare honors at the King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center Championships in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for owner Alrajhia Stud. Duchess of Marwan also crossed well with DA Valentino (Versace x DA Love), producing 2015 ABWC Champion Mare ATH, RHR Duquesa. Angel of Marwan, another full sister of Goddess, Duchess, and Princess, was a Canadian National Top Ten 2-Year-Old Filly and was exported to

Amety B A Brazil where she has produced important Gold Champions Valentine HVP and Sheik Shakhyr HVP among others, for owner Haras Vila Dos Pinheiros LTDA. Angel’s full sister Mystica Aurora was also sold to Brazil for the program of Nelson de Oliveira Prata Pinto Moreira. Their full brothers, both foaled in 2011, have also contributed top ten titles to the credit of their dam, Amety B. Mazziah was a 2014 Canadian National Top Ten Futurity Colt and Rei of Marwan won two U.S. Youth National top ten western pleasure awards in 2017. RHR Vallacontessa is a stunning black daughter of Amety B and many-times National Champion DA Valentino. A personal favorite of Stephanie McMahon, Vallacontessa was in hot demand by breeders from all over the world ever since she was born. Eventually, the McMahons were convinced to sell her to Al Shaqab-Member Qatar Foundation, arguably the most dominant Arabian horse breeding farm on the planet. Through the miracle of embryo transfer, she produced two outstanding foals in 2012.
RHR Bellacontessa, Vallacontessa’s 2012 daughter by OFW Magic Wan, was sold to Dalia Arabians in Mallorca, Spain, for whom she earned the title of Spanish National Champion Filly. Her half-brother Nimer Al Shaqab, by Marwan Al Shaqab, was a U.S. National Top Ten 2-Year-Old Colt in 2014 and a Top Ten Junior Stallion the following year for owner Al Shaqab.
At 21 years old, Amety B is already a legend. With another ten or more foals already on the ground and yet to hit the show ring, there is no telling what the final tally of champions will be. But if her exquisite 2018 filly RHR Angelina is any indication, it will be an infinite total. The bay beauty is one more example of the potent power of Amety B, a broodmare for the ages.

My Visits With Lenita by Mario Braga

M
uch has been written about Lenita Perroy for decades. There is probably very little left to report about Haras Meia Lua’s successful history over the years. Perhaps the only possible angle that could bring a new light would be a personal testimony. And that’s what this is. How much knowing Lenita changed my life. The first time I visited Haras Meia Lua I was with my father. Lenita wasn’t there. Neither was Ali Jamaal yet. It was probably 1985. Acacio (her right-hand man), along one of his lovely daughters received us. The chestnut stallion Hardun was standing at the farm, recently imported from Spain. Acacio let me ride him—it was a thrill. Then there were the magical mares. A group recently imported and carefully selected to be bred to Ali Jamaal as soon as he arrived in Brazil. They were all very similar in type. Twelve in total, if my memory serves me. They all had amazing bodies, were very feminine and had beautiful eyes. Mostly greys, they were daughters of El Hilal, Dalul, El Shaklan, Talal, Gai Parada, Ansata Ibn Halima, among others. Most of them—perhaps all—were all bred to El Shaklan before they were brought to Brazil. Lenita loved El Shaklan, who, by chance, was sold and imported to Brazil shortly after the mares’ arrival. That group founded the first mare families at Haras Meia Lua, among them: Lydira El Shaklan (mother of Ludjin el Jamaal), Naharra (mother of Ninjah el Jamaal Ali Jamaal and Narah el Jamaal, both Brazilian National Champions), Bint Mokhema (dam of Miss el Jamaal, three-time Brazilian National Champion), Talbreena (dam of U.S. Reserve National Champion mare Tulle el Jamaal), Rose of Cameo (grandmother to Brazilian leading sire of champions Ryad el Jamaal), SV Hileela (dam of National Champion Hilana el Jamaal), and Gai Ecstasy (dam of Eloise el Jamaal, Brazilian National Champion Mare). At the end of the visit we were given a beautiful catalog (I have kept all the farm’s catalogs to this day) with all the mares pictures and their pedigrees. And then we left; though a part of my heart stayed. The second time was around 1987, once again with my father. Both Lenita and Jamaal were there this time. By then, all breeders in Brazil were talking about Ali Jamaal’s arrival in the country. He was the first U.S. National halter champion male to be imported. He was to breed only ten outside mares for a very high stud fee. The outside mares would have to be personally approved by Lenita. And there he was before us—majestic, well-tempered (except when there were dogs around) and incredibly beautiful; his first foals about to hit the ground. Lenita, very much like my father, was very private, but also very polite. I guess the fact that she was so like him made me understand and respect her way of interacting with others from the beginning. She showed us the horses in her famous manner: turning them loose for thirty seconds only. Over the years I learned that it was allowed to ask for extra time, which I did constantly. Some years later I finally had a car and a driver’s license. I would drive alone to visit her for five hours back and forth from Rio, almost every year. I saw the first babies become national champions and the promise of Ali Jamaal as a sire become reality. I tried to keep track of every new mare Lenita bought. The second big turn in her breeding program, in my opinion, was the

addition of many daughters of Bey Shah who created yet a different look with Jamaal, if compared to the earlier mares. Among them: NV Justa Dream (mother of Jullye el Ludjin and grand dam of Jullyen el Jamaal) and Perfectshahn SRA (dam of Pershahn, Perseus and Pierrete el Jamaal). I remember being in Scottsdale the year she bought Bey Serenade SF, who became the show’s reserve champion filly and then resold to Battle Hill Farm. Many years later while walking with her in the pastures, I asked Lenita if she had any regrets about selling a horse, to which she answered, Bey Serenade SF. Photos by Marco Terranova
Throughout the years, many other beautiful mares were added, including the extraordinary Elle Dorada (by Enzo and out of Word Champion El Dorada), but perhaps the most amazing of all, being the U.S. Reserve National Champion Mare Sonoma Lady, who in turn produced Dakar el Jamaal, U.S. National Champion Stallion. During those times, I was blessed with the possibility to travel to many places around the world to see horses. It seemed that no matter where I went, Lenita had also been there. That became a great topic for us to talk and break the silence during my visits to her, as the only possible subject of conversation was Arabian horses. That was her universe and mine, therefore, I was completely happy with it.
Though Lenita became an internationally acclaimed breeder, she never changed her ways with anyone. She was always humble, curious and authentic. She researched a lot. Information was the greatest commodity. Every time I went to her farm, she would ask my honest opinion about the horses I saw. She would do that with all her guests. She really wanted to receive true feedback. By doing that, she made me feel respected and included. When the moment came to find a proper outcross for the Jamaal daughters, Lenita travelled the world in search of the perfect choice. She was very specific with the traits she desired to add. She had a clear picture of the ideal horse she wanted to create. Before the frozen semen era, the only choice was to import a stallion. She imported several, among them, the stallions Litigator, BF Renaissance and Debowiec. They all left their contribution to her breeding program. For line breeding, there were always some excellent sons of Ali Jamaal, with Ludjin el Jamaal being the undisputed favorite. He was once sold to Zichy Thyssen Arabians for some years, but Lenita bought him back and kept him as his father’s heir. Then there were the breedings from international stallions in later years, with very nice results. After a lifetime of searching, it is my opinion that she found A HT Abroad

her closest possible vision of her ideal stallion in El Jahez WH, a beautiful horse tracing to her own breeding program, with size and type, but also with great movement and length of neck. But in any case, for me at least, nothing in over 30 years will ever match those amazing early foal crops of Ali Jamaal. Despite all the normal ups and downs of life, my visits to Lenita felt like going to a different dimension where time had its own path and I could always find tranquility. Whenever I called to schedule a visit, she would answer the phone in the same way. I could rely on the same rituals every time I went there … following the intricate map with directions and getting lost a couple of times until I finally arrived; then I would step out of the car to open the unlocked gate myself, drive downhill to the main office and be greeted by the great gentleman, Acacio. After settling in, there was a brief welcome chat beside Lenita, with a coffee pot and a tray of cookies, followed by a walk with her to the pastures. She knew the names of all her horses by heart, as it should be. We would then go back to the indoor paddock to watch the presentation of horses (stallions, youngsters and sale horses). Sometimes we would have lunch together, depending on other visits scheduled.
Lenita and Mario
This went on for 30 years. About three years ago, I wrote a book about the Arabian horse in Brazil. I dedicated a chapter to her. She was present during the production of the photos at Meia Lua and had the final word on the entire material. It felt good to be able to somehow express all of my gratitude to her through this work. It was by that time that I felt her health was starting to fail. A year later, she called me and asked me if she could visit my farm and spend a day with me. After all those years! I could not feel more honored. I picked her up at the airport, and we were able to talk for a couple of hours until we arrived at the farm and also on our way back. We talked a lot. It felt that we caught up from those decades of laconic conversation. She spoke about her lifelong friendship with Doug Dahmen, Greg Gallún, Luiz Rocco and Dr. Hans Nagel. We remembered our trips to Poland. She revered Dr. Ignacy Jaworoski from Michalów Stud and so did I. I was beyond grateful for the time we spent together; it felt unreal. We arrived at the farm and went straight to see the horses. It was her turn to give her opinions—just magic. We had lunch with my father, the three of us together once again. Then it was time to go back. I drove her to the airport, and we had coffee and chatted a bit more. I didn’t want to go away. She said, “I think that’s enough.” I agreed. It’s been more than I could ever dream. I gave her a brief hug and then I left. A year went by. I didn’t see her again. Now I realize that her visit was a way of saying good-bye. She considered me a friend after all, as much as she was for me. I felt I had earned her respect.

Remembering Hanna Louise Heck-Melnyk
An Eternal Fighter For The Asil Arabian by Susanne Bรถsche
With the January 2018 loss of Hanna Louise (Hansi) Heck-Melnyk, the Arabian horse community lost one of its eternal fighters for the Asil Arabian horse. Born in Germany in 1931, Hansi experienced a rough time during World War II, eventually turning her back, and immigrating to Canada in 1952. Connected to horses since childhood, Hansi continued to work with horses in her new homeland and began a breeding program with Holsteiner warmbloods.
People who met Hansi at seminars or WAHO conferences know that she was never one to mince words and always said what she thought. Organizations like Al Khamsat in the USA and the Asil Club in Germany valued her dedication as a researcher, breeder and passionate advocate of the Asil Arabian horses around the globe. Hansi devoted her life to the Arabian horse and loved to share her knowledge. Her only child and her dear husband, Bill, preceded her in death. Hopefully, her Serenity horses, led by the beloved Khofo, greeted her in the afterlife.
By accident, Hansi learned about Arabian horses and wanted to delve more deeply into the fascinating scene. She founded her own straight Egyptian Arabian breeding program named Serenity Farm in Canada in 1967 and established the only private quarantine for imports to Canada and the USA. Among other fascinating horses, Hansi owned the famed mare Serenity Sonbolah and the well-known stallion, Khofo, who was close to her heart. In 1976, Hansi and her second husband, Bill, moved all their horses to sunny Florida.
Hansi thus pursued a second career. She was not only instrumental in forming the Pyramid Society, but she promoted it, too, and became a fierce researcher who never quit verifying facts. Hansi wrote several reference books, including the, Straight Egyptian Index and the Index Of Partbred Arabians Registered Internationally As Purebreds.

Zichy-Thyssen Arabians
Words by Theresa Cardamone - Design by Arabian Essence di Elvis Giughera
The End Of An Era
The grey stallion lunged forward, anticipating the wily steer’s attempt to break away from the herd. His rider gave him his head, reveling in the feel of the responsive horse beneath him. The two were as one - a collaboration between species - as they galloped across the Argentine ranchland. This was the essence of joy, of being a part of nature, of living life to its fullest.

It was in a scene such as this that Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen was often found, straddling the back of his favorite horse Hossny (Ansata Ibn Halima x Sanaaa, by Sid Abouhom). Upon his vast tract of land, the Count created the “ZT” brand of Zichy-Thyssen Arabians. With the passing of Count Federico in 2014, the world lost an avid horseman who bred world-class Arabian horses in Argentina for over 40 years. With the last of the Zichy-Thyssen breeding stock now in the hands of new owners, the gate is closing on the end of an era. The Count was the flamboyant and exuberant son of a wealthy self-made German industrialist who had relocated his family to Argentina. Federico learned to ride when he was a boy and developed a deep passion for horses which never waned. That love propelled him into becoming a well-rounded and skilled horseman. He rode steeplechases in Europe and even brought his own horses with him when he attended Cambridge University. He developed into an expert rider who enjoyed using his horses for ranch work and pleasure rides as much as he enjoyed seeing them win on the racetrack or in the show ring. Count Federico had an eye for quality, which he honed by visiting top breeders at their farms all over the world. He selected both purebred and straight Egyptian Arabians, bringing home foundation stock from United States breeders Gainey Fountainhead Arabians, Imperial Egyptian Stud and Ansata Arabians, and from Marbach Stud in Germany. The quality of the group he selected soon proved itself in no uncertain terms. It did not take long for the impact of Zichy-Thyssen breeding to be felt at the pinnacle of the Arabian Industry. At the 1996 All Nations Cup in Aachen, the Junior Champion Mare was the Count’s homebred ZT Shaksing, by the magnificent El Shaklan (Shaker El Masri x Estopa) - a key foundation horse for the Zichy-Thyssen Arabians breeding program - out of the Gainey-bred Geyn Sing, by Ga-Gajala Song. As a testament to the quality of that class, Reserve Champion to ZT Shaksing was the incredible Zagrobla (Monogramm x Zguba, by Enrilo). The next year, it was another homebred winner of Aachen gold, this time a young stallion, ZT Shakfantasy. Out of the Bey Shah daughter RH Light Fantasy and sired by El Shaklan, ZT Shakfantasy not only won the 1997 Junior Stallion

Championship at Aachen, he followed that up with wins the same year at the European Championships and finally at the World Championships in Paris. Count Zichy-Thyssen had bred and shown a rare winner of the European Triple Crown. In 1998, Zichy-Thyssen Arabians showed two other homebred horses out of Jamil daughters to multiple championships in Europe. ZT Shakjamara (El Shaklan x ZT Jamara) was the Champion Junior Mare in Aachen and reserve champion at both the European and the World Championships, while ZT Faa’Iq (Anaza El Farid x ZT Jamdusah) was the Reserve Junior Champion Stallion in Aachen, the European Junior Champion Stallion and the World Reserve Champion Junior Stallion. In just a few years, Count Zichy-Thyssen had created the ZT brand. Astute breeders from all over the world took notice and began to covet and collect Zichy-Thyssen horses for their herds. In 2002, the Zichy-Thyssen breeding program struck gold once more in the form of ZT Sharuby, the product of breeding two ZT horses together, ZT Sharello (Ansata Shah Zaman x We Three Doncella, by An Malik) and ZT Bint Ruby (Ansata El Mabrouk x Gai Ruby, by Bask). A gleaming grey, ZT Sharuby had been sold to Sheikh Saoud Bin Mohammed Bin Ali Al Thani for his program in Qatar. Under his ownership, she was named the World Champion Senior Mare, after earlier scoring the reserve championship at Aachen. As a testament to her quality as a dam, ZT Sharuby is the dam of 2006 Belgian National Champion Mare, SF Shaklina, by Sanadik El Shaklan. Zichy-Thyssen-bred mares are the dams of champions all over the world. Famed Spanish breeder Marieta Salas chose the ZT mare ZT Ludjkalba (Ludjin El Jamaal x ZT Shakalba, by El Shaklan) to cross with the then up-and-coming Sire of the Century, Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame, by Fame VF). The resulting filly, Abha Myra, won the title of 2006 U.S. National Champion Junior Mare, adding other honors in later years, including 2008 Reserve Champion Mare at the All Nations Cup. Myra’s full brother, Abha Qatar, brought further recognition to both sire and dam by sweeping the European Triple Crown when he won 2009 Gold Champion Junior Stallion titles in Aachen and at the European and World Championships. Abha Qatar returned to capture the 2012 European Gold Champion and All

Nations Cup Silver Champion honors as well, adding another Gold Championship in Aachen in 2013. Abha Qatar continued to add to his coffers with a 2013 World Bronze Champion Senior Stallion title for owner Al Mohamadia Stud. Athbah Stud in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, enjoyed the Gold and Silver Junior Stallion Championships earned by Baare Athbah in 2015. A son of EKS Alihandro, he is out of ZT Ludjteyna, a daughter of Ludjin El Jamaal and U.S. National Champion Mare, Shahteyna. To the cover of Alihandro’s sire, Marwan Al Shaqab, ZT Ludjteyna produced the Zichy-Thyssen herd sire, ZT Marwteyn. Alfabia Akiabara is double-ZT breeding, being by ZT Marwteyn and out of ZT Ludbectra (Ludjin El Jamaal x ZT Rubilectra, by Count Electra). She was a Gold Champion Junior Mare for owner Shirley Watts of Great Britain in 2013 and brought home a Silver Championship from Aachen as well. Marwteyn has sired many champions all over the world including Al Shahania Stud’s Bahia Alfabia, out of ZT Shakgeromit, by El Shaklan, and the El Geronimo mare, ZT Geromit. Bahia has 2015 Gold and Bronze medals earned on the European circuit. In North America, Marwteyn has had excellent success, as exemplified by 2015 Canadian National Champion Filly, Del Adora, out of GC Season In Love, by Aria Impresario.
Four years later, the 2010 WAHO Award for Argentina went to SF Yundi, a son of ZT Shakismart, himself a third-generation ZT product who is by the immortal El Shaklan and out of ZT Kismart (Imperial Napharr x ZT Kismet, by Moniet El Nafis). SF Yundi was honored for his versatility as a performance champion in English and Western pleasure, liberty and 120km endurance competitions. Be it in the show ring, on the race track, or out on the endurance trail, the legacy of Zichy-Thyssen Arabians will continue to flourish as long as there are breeders dedicated to producing beautiful, useful Arabian horses. It is through their efforts and commitment that the ZT Arabian heritage will nourish the bloodlines of future champions in every discipline.
From Top Left: Bahia Alfabia (ZT Marwteyn x ZT Shakgeromit, by El Shaklan) ZT Marwteyn (Marwan Al Shaqab x ZT Ludjteyna, by Ludjin El Jamaal) Alfabia Akiabara (ZT Marwteyn x ZT Ludbectra, by Ludjin El Jamaal) Count Federico and Hossny, always ready for the next adventure.
It is hard to imagine the landscape of Arabian horse pedigrees in the future without fresh influxes of Zichy-Thyssen breeding. ZT horses continue to be honored many years after their original achievements. In 2005, the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) established a special trophy to honor horses from member nations who have contributed to the breed in unique ways, acting as “ambassadors” for their country. In 2006, the WAHO award for an Argentine horse went to ZT Naphl, a second-generation product of Zichy-Thyssen breeding. Like the show horses, ZT Naphl is also the result of crossing horses from the venerated American foundation sources, Imperial Egyptian Stud and Gainey Arabians. Sired by Imperial Napharr (Moniet El Nafis x Pharrah, by Farag), who the Count imported to Argentina, Naphl is out of ZT Difl (Imperial Hasib x Galatina Rouge, by Gay-Rouge). He had an outstanding racing record in Argentina and America, where he won the Darley Award, racing’s highest honor, as the Champion Older Arabian Race Horse in 1999. Over his career, ZT Naphl won five Group 1 races and over $100,000 USD and set a track record for 8.5 furlongs at Delaware Park. A HT Abroad

So, if you ever visit Argentina and make your way to the thousands of acres of Argentine rangeland that was once the Count’s home, don’t be surprised if you see what appears to be an elegant gentleman on a tenacious grey stallion - running down a stray steer, turning him back into the confines of the herd. That will be the essence of Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen and Hossny, joyfully putting in another good day’s work, doing exactly what they loved to do most. Although it may be the end of an era, they embody the everlasting spirit of Zichy-Thyssen Arabians. A HT Abroad

Beyond the gracious gates and down the picturesque lanes that wind between verdant pastures, the ivy-covered walls of Haras Vila dos Pinheiros embrace the living dreams of its founder, Jaime Pinheiro. Since its inception in 1990, Haras Vila dos Pinheiros has taken its place among the leading Arabian horse breeding farms in Brazil. The impact of the HVP breeding program is evident in the pedigrees of current champions at top competitions on a global level.

exceptional pedigrees on the maternal side as well. With the genetic probabilities now stacked in favor of success, it did not take long for the “HVP” suffix to become synonymous with the high quality of the HVP herd.
Magnum Chall HVP has shown a bright light on the HVP program ever since he was foaled in 2001. Sold at a very young age to the United States, the son of Magnum Psyche and Taamara HVP (a homebred daughter of Don El Chall) was the unanimous Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt in 2003 before earning the first of his three national titles, U.S. National Champion Junior Stallion in 2004. The following year, Magnum Chall won the same title in Canada before returning to Brazil, where he also claimed the junior championship.
Magnum Chall HVP is the sire of many exceptional horses for the world’s leading breeders, including one of the prize broodmares of Albidayer Stud, 2005 U.S. National Reserve Champion Yearling filly, Mattaharii. A stunning mare, she out-produced herself with her daughter, 2017 World Gold Champion Junior Mare, Mozn Albidayer, who is also the 2016 U.S. National Champion Junior Mare; as well as producing other champions, including French National Champion, Mayasah Albidayer. Magnum Chall has sired a multitude of national winners, such as 2017 Brazilian National Champion Hunter Pleasure horse, Munir HVP, out of Myna HVP.

The HVP stamp is evident across the world. 2012 Brazilian National Champion Stallion Vulcano HVP, by Nuzyr HCF out of the homebred Lady Psyche HVP, is a magnificent chestnut with previous Brazilian honors as a young colt and junior stallion. Cherished broodmare HB Bessolea celebrated two of her offspring winning U.S. National Champion titles in 2014 when full siblings Bessolina El Marwan and Baahir El Marwan, by Marwan Al Shaqab, were named Champion 4-5 Year Mare and overall Champion Stallion. In 2017, full sister Baviera HVP was named Brazilian Senior Champion Mare.
HVP mare RD Fabreanna, a U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly, is the dam of the stallion who finished Reserve National Champion to Baahir in the U.S. in 2014 and is a Brazilian National Champion himself, LLC Fasario. Fabreanna is the dam of many other incredible horses, including multiple-U.S. and World Champion, Donna Molta Bella SRA. Angel of Marwan is a full sister to three U.S. National Champion Yearling fillies, all out of the phenomenal Amety B (Eternety x Amiga B, by Bask El Amigo) and sired by Marwan Al Shaqab. She is representative of the many other outstanding mares who are part of the HVP collection; Aj Kharena, DA Joia, Abbiat El Shams, JR Burmagny, Promessah, RP Joharra, et al.

The Haras Vila dos Pinheiros program has been honored by the many important breeding awards they have garnered over the years. And that is not likely to change in the near future, if the results of the last two years are any indication.
In 2016 Haras Vila dos Pinheiros won the prestigious Breeders Cup championship as Brazil’s leading breeder. The farm was ranked in first place as both the Leading Breeder and Leading Exhibitor of halter horses and second as leading breeder and leading exhibitor of performance horses, a remarkable achievement. HVP also earned accolades as a breeder and exhibitor on a global level.
The momentum established by winning the Breeders Cup continued unabated in 2017, when Haras Vila dos Pinheiros was ranked as the best in Brazil, this time in all four major categories: Best Halter Breeder and Best Halter Exhibitor; and Best Performance Breeder and Best Performance Exhibitor! In halter, HVP horses won the Gold in Senior Mares (Baviera HVP), Young Stallions (Menton HVP), and Geldings (Sheik Shakhyr HVP); Silver in Senior Stallions (Tales HVP), Colts (Fire Heart HVP) and Geldings (Major HVP), with Bronze in Senior Mares (Tawany HVP) and Fillies (Special Dream HVP). Haras Vila dos Pinheiros brought home four national championships in performance, one in Hunter Pleasure (Munir HVP), and three in Western Pleasure (Princesa HVP, Donatello HVP, Major HVP).

Remembering Wegdan El Barbary by Susanne Bösche
The year has barely begun, and on January 23rd, the Arabian horse community has lost yet another wonderful soul, Wegdan El Barbary.
Care, devotion and respect for the sensitive Arabian horse were important to Dani. In fidelity to her principles, Dani concentrated on her horses and did not follow the trends when the Arabian horse scene in Egypt changed massively after the millennium. Remote from all prevailing trends, Dani continued following her own path.
Dani also knew the show scene, as she was a respected international judge. The Polish Nationals in Janów Podlaski and the World Championship in Paris saw her as a judge in the 1980s.
“The Arabian should be loved and appreciated for what it really is, because it simply cannot be better,” Dani wrote once. Although Dani is gone now, her wisdom and knowledge will live forever through those who met her and had the chance to learn from her.
Her stud farm, Shams El Asil, founded from a wisely selected group of mares from El Zahraa and the Tawahi Bedouins, as well as the magnificent Morafic son Bilal I out of Mona, was a piece of heaven at the edge of bustling Cairo.

Before becoming one of the most prominent breeders in Egypt, Wegdan (Dani) El Barbary was the only female rider on the official Egyptian show jumping team. When starting her own Arabian horse breeding program in the early 1970s, the chase for victories was over. Dani admired the Arabian horse for its deeply rooted traits, qualities and characteristics. “These horses are smart, alert, friendly, agile, tough, courageous, proud and built for the desert,” Dani once said in a TV interview. “I am trying to keep all those traits when I think of breeding the Arabian horse. It is not about make-up and posing for the crowd.”

championship with her halter gelding, GS Neapalotan RCF, and a national reserve championship in the Country English Pleasure AAOTR Jackpot, as well as additional top tens on several other horses.
Lara Ames, daughter of longtime Minnesota breeders Dick and Lollie Ames, grew up on a farm showing horses. “I have been fortunate enough to be in the barn ever since I was a toddler,” she recalls. The youngest of seven children, she continues to manage her family’s Cedar Ridge Arabian Farm in addition to her role as Publisher of Arabian Horse Times (AHT) and AHT Abroad. It has been a formula for success on both fronts, as proven at the 2017 United States National Championships, where Cedar Ridge was the #2 Breeder Overall, a remarkable achievement. Throughout her life, the Ames’ were close to the Walter Mishek family, who published AHT for decades. Being a journalism major with a degree from the University of Minnesota, Lara recognized it as the perfect opportunity to do something more within the Arabian breed while utilizing her university training when the chance to take over ownership of the magazine was presented. Under her leadership, the publication has grown in every way and is now regarded as the world’s leading monthly in print and online magazine dedicated to the Arabian horse. “I love everything about the Arabian horse and am so lucky to spend every day in this world,” Lara enthuses. She is a highly accomplished amateur horsewoman, with a battery of national championships in both halter and performance to show for it. At the 2017 U.S. Nationals, she garnered a national
A HT Abroad
After growing into her role as publisher of AHT, Lara wanted to expand the scope of the magazine to areas outside of North America. In 2015, she started AHT Abroad with the guidance of thenCreative Director Jeff Wallace (who recruited the current all-women Abroad production team: Mieke Opsteyn, Susanne Bösche, Elisa Grassi and Theresa Cardamone). “It seemed that there was a need for a publication in Europe and the Middle East which had strong editorial content in support of the breeders and farms in those areas,” Lara explains. Abroad was very well received, with a rapidly growing list of subscribers that puts it on coffee tables and desks throughout the world. Lara treasures the lifelong friendships that her involvement with the Arabian horse has given her and appreciates the new people that enter her life every day through the publications. She wants to spend more time connecting with them and doing the things that she loves. To that end, Lara Ames has set a goal to not take on more than she can handle in 2018. “I want to focus my energy on what I know best,” she says. “And that is sharing my passion and love for the Arabian horse!”

Susanne Bösche
Theresa Cardamone
Susanne Bösche remembers losing her heart to the Arabian horse as a young girl when she was gifted with the book, Ghazal – Fürst der Pferde. “Since then, my life has been interwoven with the grace of these horses, the people who are dedicated to them, and the rich history and stories behind them,” she relates.
Theresa Cardamone’s writing led to being pen-pals with superhorse Secretariat before she met Valez, the Arabian gelding who carried her across the USA in 1976. She codeveloped/managed Ventura Farms in California in the 1980s before relocating to the Seattle area.
A longtime student of bloodlines as well as a writer, Susanne published her first articles about Arabian horses more than 27 years ago. She worked with Dr. Hans-Joachim Nagel on his first Hanan book and published the Pyramid Society Europe’s Almanach II to IV. In addition, she published her own small Arabian horse magazine for ten years before becoming the editor of a German Arabian horse journal, Araber Weltweit. Susanne has been writing for Abroad since its premiere issue, and also composes blog entries for Arabian Horse Global Network. She looks forward to enjoying many more years as part of the Abroad team.

After raising a family, Theresa earned her BA at NYU, graduating magna cum laude in 2014 with a degree in Organizational Behavior & Change. That year, she began writing for AHT and has been part of the Abroad team from its inception. A lifelong learner, Theresa gained an Advanced Diploma in Copyediting/Proofreading/Fact-Checking at NYU in 2017. “I’m grateful that my work with the magazine has brought me back to the Arabian horse,” she says. “My life has truly come full-circle. I appreciate the effort it takes to produce Abroad and the knowledge and skill of my amazing teammates.” Theresa again makes her home in the Pacific Northwest, where she can envision another Arabian horse in her not-toodistant future.

Elisa Grassi
Mieke Opsteyn
Elisa Grassi grew up with horses and was introduced to Arabians when her father bought a group of Russian-bred mares. When she was 16, she spent a year in Utah, USA, living with a Mormon family…a great life experience. Elisa studied Public Relations in college, but after she met Frank Spönle in Italy, she went to work at Fontanella Magic Arabians, where Frank came every month to train.
Mieke Opsteyn’s first contact with Arabian horses came through attending European shows. She met Glenn Jacobs, who recommended her for her first industry job at Al Wabra Stud in Qatar. She then spent three months in an internship with Judi Forbis at Ansata Arabians, USA.
“That is how our life together started,” explains Elisa. “After our daughter Virginia was born three years later, we decided to have a permanent home together, and I moved to Germany. Three years ago, our son Francesco was born. They keep us busy!” Elisa loves designing ads and considers working for Abroad the last two years a beautiful challenge. She says, “To see the magazines in print, the work of a few months finally in our hands, is just amazing!”
A HT Abroad
Mieke soon received a job offer from Sheikh Khaled Ahmed Bagedo at Al Khaled Farm in Egypt, courtesy of a kind referral by respected horseman, Bart van Buggenhout. She spent nearly five years in Egypt before relocating with Al Khaled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Arabian horses also brought Mieke her life partner, Glenn Schoukens. When their relationship bloomed, she decided to join him in Belgium, intending to start a family. Just over a year ago, their daughter Mia was born. Mieke has Bart to thank for also referring her to her current job as AHT Abroad Representative. “I enjoy the creative part, coming up with new editorial ideas,” says Mieke. “I also like the satisfaction of keeping everything organized and look forward to another great year!”

Meanwhile, In Paris. .
As the 22-year-old stallion came into the arena, spotlights illuminated the lettering on his black sheet, which proclaimed him World Platinum Champion Stallion. Memories of past victories by he and his progeny on the Arabian horse world ’s most important stage were thick among the spectators. Mindful of his exuberant handler, Sheikh Hamad, at the end of the lead, the stately horse proceeded around center ring for photos, to the applause of the crowd. This was what many at the 2017 Arabian World Championships at the Salon du Cheval in Paris had been waiting for—the reappearance of a Living Legend, Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Kajora).

ach year, over one hundred of the world’s finest Arabian horses gather at the Nord Villepinte exhibition center near Paris to vie for World Champion titles. It is a coming together of people from disparate cultures, politics, and parts of the planet who are linked by their appreciation for the Arabian horse. In 2017, nearly 20 countries—from Egypt to Israel, from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the USA—were represented by horses that earned the opportunity to be there through trial by competition all around the world.
The public appearance by Gazal Al Shaqab to claim his ultimate honor was an exceptional moment that was long overdue, as his influence on the modern Arabian show horse is unsurpassed. The 2017 World Championships also provided other magic moments that will be remembered for years to come. A HT Abroad

The senior stallion classes were stacked with international champions, all of whom were legitimate contenders for the Gold title. The competition was especially intense between Gazal’s grandson, Wadee Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl), representing Qatar, and his great-grandson, Equator (QR Marc x Ekliptyka), representing Poland. Both stallions were on their toes, showing themselves to their best advantage. Wadee, the eventual Gold Champion, won Most Beautiful Head in his qualifying class, while Silver Champion Equator won the Best Movement award for males. Sometimes the most iconic moments come when they are least expected, which is just what happened when Equator demonstrated for the audience one of the things that make Arabian horses so special. Moments after his fiery performance, Equator stood happily in center ring, posing for pictures with trainer Glenn Schoukens’ one-year old daughter Mia straddling his back! It was perfect publicity for the perfect breed. The Salon du Cheval is a large exhibition that showcases many horse breeds and disciplines. Vendors of everything equine peddle their wares and the stands are full of people with a general love of horses, some of whom are seeing Arabians for the first time. It is a beautiful way to incorporate the best Arabian horses into the mindset and consciousness of the people at the venue. A popular winner at this year’s show was the World Gold Champion Junior Mare, Mozn Albidayer (S.M.A. Magic One x Mattaharii), from the UAE. A shimmering silver with extreme type, Mozn had many other important titles already under her belt and was favored to win in Paris. She earned the only roster of straight 20s for type for any horse in Paris, along with the Most Beautiful Head trophy in her class. The unanimous World Gold Champion Junior Stallion was Al Sayed Stud’s Alexxanderr (Excalibur EA x AR Most Irresistible), who has been a perpetual winner in Europe. An extremely correct and typey grey with excellent motion representing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Alexxanderr was bred in America by Frances Butler and Brandi Carson, who represented the breeders in the “winner’s circle” photos. The senior mare class was a delight to witness, with the Gold award going to the ultra-feminine Tehama Ballalina (Tehama Na Sidaqa x JJ Shai Majestic Queen) for Al Zobair Stud. In an amazing turn of events, the Silver Champion, Shirin By Aisha (WH Justice x Aisha By Missouri) also became the producer of a World Champion when her son Figaro was named the Gold Champion Yearling Colt for Aljassimya Farm of Qatar. As Figaro was sired by Gold Champion stallion Wadee Al Shaqab, it was an endorsement of both sire and dam as not only exceptional show horses themselves, but exceptional producers as well. Figaro won a A HT Abroad

The yearling filly LR Era De Excalibur was another Gold Champion for her sire, Excalibur EA. Out of LR Expected Beauty, Era De Excalibur competed for the partnership of Al Sayed Stud, Saudi Arabia, and Las Rosas Estancia, Uruguay. The nearly pure-white filly was supported by admirers in the stands waving white paper flowers in her honor. It is rare for an American owner to show horses at the World Championships without first campaigning them in Europe. But that did not stop Patricia Dempsey of Beloveds Farm, Florida, who brought two outstanding entries, both shown by Ted Carson. Om El Erodite (EKS Alihandro x Om El Excella) had set a world record price for a yearling sold at auction earlier in the year and was recognized in Paris as the Bronze World Champion Yearling Filly and Most Beautiful Head winner. Homebred Beloved Gracious Lady (Bey Ambition x AP Sheez Sassy), the 2016 U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly, ignited the audience when she trotted away with the title for Best Movement-Female with scores of straight 20s across the board. It was the only perfect score for movement at the World Championships. When the dust settled, Gracious Lady won her class, which included the reigning European Champion and the eventual Silver and Bronze choices. It was an ambitious and successful European debut for Beloveds Farm. As the final results were announced and the 2017 Arabian World Championships came to a close, owners and breeders were already looking forward to the next year, filled with the eternal hope that flows throughout the Eternal City of Paris.

Prince Sultan arabian HorSe FeStival A Majestic Event
January 25-27, 2018 ︱Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
T
by Susanne BÖsche
he staging of an Arabian horse festival has been a vision of His Royal Highness, Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for some years, and with the Prince Sultan Arabian Horse Festival (PSAIAHF), the dream came to fruition, honoring his passion and love of the Arabian horse. “I would like to refer to this festival as a majestic event,” Prince Khaled bin Sultan once said. Just considering the overall quality and especially the magnificent competitors in the senior mare classes, he was right. Over the last few years, we’ve witnessed a phalanx of exquisite beauties in the senior mare division. Remember 2017, when exceptional Polish-bred Norma trotted away with Gold leaving OFW Ana and Abha Palma behind. It was another Polish princess, Pinga, who garnered Gold in 2016 by unanimous vote of the judges, with Anood Al Nasser and Norma winning Silver and Bronze respectively. Who would take the crown in 2018? An excited crowd filled the grandstand to have a glimpse of the candidates. The lineup of class winners in the Senior Mare Championship was amazing, with Bint Hazy Al Khalediah, Donna Molta Bella SRA, Norma and Shirin By Aisha all in attendance. Already accomplished international show champions, each of them carries in her heart the athletic and elegant genius of her distinguished family lines. It was the bay Donna Molta Bella SRA who was one step ahead garnering Gold Champion. The flea-bitten and bold moving beauty that is Shirin By Aisha garnered Silver, with the elegant Bint Hazy Al Khalediah winning Bronze.

All three mares are representatives of important modern sire lines tracing back to Versace (Bey Shah), WH Justice (Padrons Psyche), and Al Lahab (Ansata Ibn Halima). A look into Bint Hazy Al Khalediah’s pedigree, her sire, El Palacio VO, is a son of the unforgotten El Dorada, who won PSAIAHF Silver Champion Senior Mare in 2013. El Dorada was bested only by the fascinating F T Shaella, while Emandoria garnered Bronze; further proof of the high quality of this festival. Powerful stallions fought for Gold in the show ring. Fitting his bright shimmering golden coat, Abha Qatar accomplished Gold Champion Senior Stallion. Silver was awarded to Al Khatab Al Thani with WH York winning Bronze. And what of the young generation, the promise of tomorrow? Graduating from kindergarten, the fillies and colts flew their flags for their proud breeders and proved the quality of their ancestors; their sires not unknowns at the PSAIAHF. Alexxanderr, 2016 PSAIAHF Gold Champion Junior Male, was the sire of Gold and Bronze Champion Yearling Fillies, and Emerald J, who garnered Gold in the Senior Stallions last year, sired Admiraal, Gold Champion Yearling Colt. The Prince Sultan Arabian Horse Festival is an amazing celebration of the Arabian horse and has been implemented to promote and develop the equestrian disciplines at the Al Khalediah Farm in Tebrak, close to Saudi Arabia’s capital city Riyadh, a destination visitors could spend some time discovering beyond horses. Of course, the Arabian horse has played a vital role in the history of the Arabian culture, but Saudi Arabia is rich in many attractions. Riyadh is a cosmopolitan city with stunning modern towers boasting Michelin-star restaurants next to international food chains— urban constructed panache, while still maintaining its historical and cultural treasures of distinctive heritage, such as the Jiraiya, one of the “World Heritage sites” that embraces the history of the Kingdom through its ancient buildings. It is a haven with old and new and beauty all around.
