This is the easiest paste to use by far! I don’t have to

lunge my horses as much, and it helps keep them focused. We also don’t have to keep wiping their mouths...the horses like the taste. ~Rick Gault

On Point is very effective, and I don’t have to use as much as other pastes.

This makes it cost effective for my owners. My horses like it and I don’t have to worry about working them down so much to show. ~Sally Randle

The horses swallow this paste, so there isn’t any waste.

On Point doesn’t make the horses feel soggy, they just go out and do their job. This not only helps our rides, it also allows our amateurs to concentrate on what they need to do in the show ring rather than fighting a hot horse. ~Joe & Michele Reser

Stay On-Point Equine Paste™ • Allows your horse to stay calm and focused during competition. • Palatable and easy to dose. • Contains no USEF prohibited substances.

A SELLER’S MARKET Those who pay attention to the market for Arabian horses will have noticed that we’re in a seller’s market. For various reasons, we have not enjoyed this sort of thing in quite a while, except for the top horses in competition (or the ones with the best potential), and that is a very select segment of the industry. They sell privately and only rumors tell us what someone paid. But, what about a seller’s market that might affect everyone? How can we, as a community, take advantage of that to realize the most benefits? I suggest that we use the demand to develop a stronger middle market, long one of the biggest challenges we have faced in selling our horses and promoting our breed. One of the reasons selling horses in the middle market—not the grand championship level, but not personal trail horses either—is validating prices. Buyers need to understand the market and what these horses cost. To do that, why not take another look at auctions, but in a different way than we have in the past? In recent years, many of us have come to think of auctions as where you’d go to unload a mediocre horse. Today, I think we’re in a completely different place. It never hurts to point out that in the golden age of the industry, the auction stage was where some of the greatest horses in the breed sold for impressive prices. The fact that multiple people wanted those horses and bid on them also gave more validity to what the top ones were worth. Until you have a public auction, you never know how many people want those standouts or what the buyers are willing to pay. All of that factors in to setting the values for Arabians in general. The middle market then could comfortably establish its place beneath the highest level, as buyers could more easily rate the talent and ability of the horses. Frequently, mid- to upper-level horses sold at those auctions too, further confirming their value. So, that’s what’s been on my mind today, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Most importantly, let’s make the most of the opportunity a seller’s market offers to expand our community.

Photos & story by Jenn Trickey To dozens of horse crazy individuals and their families, the Annual RBC Open House of National champions who line the aisles of the Smithfield, North Carolina training facility is a welcoming sight. But, more importantly, and more creatively, it is much more than that. It is a weekend of old and new … an appreciation of the past with the prospect of the future, and an event of first-time experiences that will never be forgotten.

Rob, Caralyn, Janie and company began the weekend on a Friday evening with a dinner and stallion presentation for the 50+ attendees who traveled for the event. Ten stallions rocked the crowd in the indoor arena—they never disappoint. Those in the audience who owned or had known them well, continued to be awed, while those new to RBC and horses in general, got a huge dose of their sprit; both thundering across the stage, and standing quietly for their more intimate connections.

Ar abian Horse Times | 19 | Volume 52, No. 8

O

f course, they come to see the horses. They are the heart of the event, however, RBC took a pause in the presentation to honor their clients who have been with them for so many years. Sharing stories of Jordan Williamson, of Dolorosa Arabians when she entered the ring for the first time as a youth rider began a walk down memory lane to include George and Debbie Attwood, Debra Hines, Frank and Sara Chisholm, and Nan Harley. Appreciation was given to those friends and clients who have been with Rob and Caralyn for decades. Following Friday night’s reflection of the past was a day to welcome the future! With local advertising, the farm encouraged area families to have an up close and personal interaction with Arabians horses. For some, it was an interaction to feed an already horse-hungry palate; for others it was a brand new taste! Attendees were assembled in groups of 5-10 who were guided through six educational stations.

Station 1, The Veterinarian Dr. Kently Dean, a long-time Arabian rider and breeder, gave an overview of her typical services and did not leave out the sometimes, not so glamorous details! Through observation, touch and feel, Dr. Dean broke down how she helps to keep horses happy and healthy.

Station 2, Grooming Down the aisle, the groups rotated. The next stop was at the cross ties. From the importance for health and hygiene, to tricks of the show ring preparation, the group picked up brushes and curried right in!

Station 3, Finger Paint Station This year’s horse volunteer to be the canvas was Caduceus TDF. This sweet, 5-year-old gelding displayed just how kind and kid friendly Arabian horses are, while they took turns painting on the love! All safe and water soluble, of course, this station was one of the favorites. Caduceus was certainly the big hit of the weekend.

Station 4, The Farriers One of the industry’s oldest professions was demonstrated by farriers Johnny Canady and Lafras Beukes. Explanations of the trimming and shoeing process were topped with hands-on help from the groups. The importance of hoof health was a fascinating topic of the day, and everyone was welcome to roll up their sleeves and dig in!

Station 5, Lead-Line How many lead-line stations do you know of that can brag about its use of a multi-national champion and sire of multi-national champions in the pony ride? This year’s all-around champ was none other than the living legend Possesion PGA+//.

Station 6, Training/Conformation and Suitability This one was back to basics and in the bull pen. Rob Bick explained and demonstrated concepts including moving away from pressure. He described the display of several behaviors in horses when training them. He demonstrated the ease of which a horse can carry a rider when asked correctly. This station was full of questions and answers—no two alike.

Following the stations, lunch, and a few horse presentations, the day once again shifted to a new discussion. Welcomed to a panel to discuss breeding, were experts John Lambert of Cal Poly University at Pomona, California, Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables in St. Clair, Michigan, and RBC client, Frank Chisholm of Palmetto Arabians in South Carolina. The team shared their experiences of trials and tribulations. They noted the levels of ups and downs to ultimately reach their

successes. Questions and answers were exchanged. The underlying common message was the importance of respectful breeding, and much advice was given from the pros.

As the day wound down, the horses continued to be admired by everyone, but undoubtedly, each person walked away with something a little different. For one, it could have been a smile of a memory that took place 15 years ago; for another it could have been the first time feeling of a hoof pick in their hand; or maybe it was the excitement of having just chosen a stallion for their first mare to breed.

Looking back … looking forward … this was not your average Open House; but maybe it should be!
