Introduced to the Arabian horse as an investment opportunity, it did not take long for Frank Hennessey to realize that the true investment had nothing to do with dollars and cents, rather a tremendous connection with multiple horses and the love of the lifestyle they offered. This discovery changed him to the core of his very being. Hennessey Arabians’ evolvement from its humble beginnings in 2003 to date ...

2003

The Arabian horse is introduced to Hennessey as an investment opportunity.

2007

~ World-renowned judge and horse enthusiast, George Z, is hired by Hennessey. ~ Property is purchased in the horse capital of the world, Ocala, Florida, as the future site of Hennessey Arabians. George Z and Frank Hennessey with Director Marek Trela at Janow Podlaski Stud in Poland.

Ekstazia (Eukaliptus × Elwara)

Frank and Carol first met George on a trip to Brazil. George had missed his flight and was dealing with the loss of his luggage when Frank and Carol found and introduced themselves to George. The tumult ous trip, need for shared underwear and a great deal of comical circumstances helped the Hennesseys discover a side of George’s personality that encouraged an instant bond between them. Shortly after their Brazilian adventures, Frank, Carol and George joined one another on a fantastic journey to George’s home country of Poland. The trip led to an understanding of just how knowledgeable and respected George was in Poland. They learned of his responsibility for handling virtually every horse lease and purchase between the United States and the Polish State Studs. It did not take long for Frank to conclude that George was the perfect person to help him “design” his new farm in Ocala. He felt certain that George could help him realize his dream to create a heaven and sanctuary for his Arabian horses. George agreed to commit to four months to prepare and design the farm. He told Frank that if at the end of four months they did not like each other, they would go their separate ways. “We’ve never talked about it again,” shares Hennessey.

The first three horses arrive at the newly established, Hennessey Arabians farm in Ocala. The mares were: Ekzotyka (Goliat × Edessa), Ekstazia (Eukaliptus × Elwara) and Zorandze (Goliat × Zabrina VF), formerly owned by Marsha Parkinson.

2008

The first foal is born at Hennessey Arabians, H Ekzquissite H (Equifor x Ekzotyka), and sold to Saudi Arabia last year.

2009

The first Hennessey-bred foal is born, H Verdykt H (Versace x Ekzotyka). Verdykt has an impressive show record in halter, sport horse in hand, western trail and western pleasure, on a class A and regional level. The second foal born at the farm was the incomparable H Zandra H. Zandra is by World Champion QR Marc and out of Zorandze. She has proven to be one of Hennessey’s best producing mares. Her filly sired by FA El Shawan, Royal Samara H, has proven herself on a regional and national level in halter on multiple occasions for owners Cindy McGown and Mark Davis of Royal Arabians. These two outstanding foals began the unprecedented success of Hennessey Arabians’ breeding program in both halter and performance competitions. Their dream of producing correct and beautifully structured Arabian horses is realized in their first foal crop.

October 2009

H Mobility H is named U.S. National Reserve Champion English Pleasure Futurity horse. It was then that Frank and George realized ‘Mo’s’ potential as the future breeding sire to stand and represent the performance division of the Hennessey program. To date, H Mobilty H has sired 44 foals. These progeny are just beginning to make their mark in the performance arena with outstanding accomplishments. H Magic Mobility H, also known as ‘Happy,’ is out of the daughter of Magic Dream, Ellusion of Magic. He was named Region 12 English Pleasure Futurity Champion in his first competition under saddle. Their dream of producing correct and beautifully structured Arabian horses that win in both halter and performance is further realized. That was just the begining of ‘Mo’s’ momentum as a sire with the recent 2016 Scottsdale Country English Pleasure Jr. Horse Championship by won by CP Manifesto (H Mobility H x Afire Charmm). continued ...

2013

Hennessey Arabians retains its first colt as a future breeding stallion to further establish the halter division of their breeding program. H Angelo H (Enzo x Angelina Showlee) was a stunning foal. Greg Gallún noted his extreme resemblance to half-brother Eden C. Second only to his outstanding bloodlines was the connection Frank and George felt for Carol Steppe with her involvement in the creation of this beautiful young colt. Frank had purchased the mare SC Zimpatique from Carol with the hopes of adding her star powered bloodlines to their broodmare band. Unfortunately, Zimpatique passed away before producing a foal for them. In a beautiful act of friendship, Carol offered Hennessey an embryo to her prize daughter of Zimpatique, Angelina Showlee. The day ‘Angelo’ was born, they found him to be a beautiful symbol of their forever bond with Carol. Angelo’s first foal, H Entice H out of H Embrace H, was named East Coast Show and Region 12 Champion Filly. Today, two of Hennessey’s most prized young fillies are sired by Angelo, H Pepa H and H Peppy H. These fillies will be kept to carry the legacy of their world-renowned mother, *Pepesza. *Pepesza is one of the most irresistibly beautiful and elegant daughters of Eukaliptus, and is the dam of international champion, Pepita. Pepita is known around the globe primarily for having sold at the 2015 Pride of Poland Auction for $1.4 million Euro.

Frank Hennessey breeds Arabian horses because he LOVES them and he wants everyone he knows to experience them the way he does. His passion “A horse for every home and A home for every horse” is not a catchy phrase to grab your attention; it’s a genuine desire of Frank’s.

2013 – The Jaipur Initiative

In an effort to implement the strength, beauty and quality of Ali Jamaal bloodlines in the program, Hennessey formed the Jaipur Initiative. Jaipur el Perseus is the ultra exotic colt imported by oOne LLC from Lenita Perroy’s world renowned Haras Meia Lua in Sorocaba, Brazil. Jaipur’s sire, the charismatic black stallion, Perseus el Jamaal, is the super sire and son of three-time national champion and living legend Ali Jamaal. In addition to this, Jaipur is the most look-alike son of his mother, the one and only queen of Brazil, Jullye el Ludjin. Jaipur now stands at Christine Jamar’s Jadeem Arabians in Belgium. The Jaipur Initiative and Jamaar believe that Jaipur’s pedigree makes him very unique and a valuable asset to many breeding programs in Europe. His foals are excelling in both halter and performance at a very young age on the international circuit. Recipient of the Region XII Breeder of Distinction Award. This esteemed award is presented to the breeder whose horses achieve the highest number of points in competition. Hennessey Arabians’ success with both halter and performance horses two years in a row was made possible in part by the dedication, hard work and professionalism of trainers Mike and Peri Wison, Ted Carson and Mary Trowbridge, along with the outstanding teams they each employ. Hennessey Arabians took a bold new step by the induction of the first online Production Auction of its kind. Quality breeding horses were offered and made available to the general public in a fair, honest and transparent venue. Of the 15 horses offered in the auction, 10 were sold with an impressive overall average sale price and very satisfied customers. The traffic generated to the farm, successful sales and interest in the Hennessey program was a welcome bonus to the efforts put forth for the auction itself. The next HA Production Sale will take place on August 26th and 27th. When put into perspective, the level of success and growth understood by Hennessey Arabians in just nine years—a relatively short period of time—is what sets them apart as true breeders of distinction. Frank and his team maintain an open door policy and allow visitors from all over the world to visit and discover what has changed their lives.

2016 Region 12 Championships & Spotlight Futurity

T

he Region 12 Championships and Spotlight Futurity … Perry, Ga. … first week of May. Need they say more? With its rich history of dedicated Arabian horse enthusiasts and past successes, people only need to know when to save the date every year. Being the largest region and known for its level of quality competition, the first week of May is optimal for many reasons. With no other regions competing for the same dates, Region 12 is a popular destination to start the season for its spectacular quality of Arabians, as well as its location. The weather this year was a little cooler for a change, requiring jackets some days, but the competition was as strong as ever with beautiful horses coming from all over to compete in the esteemed regional show.

Additional hits of the show were twelve Egyptian halter classes added to the class schedule, Markel Insurance’s Wine And Cheese Party to promote the vendors, Sylvia Zerbini and her world famous Grande Liberte Performance, the Second Annual Chili Cook Off with $1,000 in prizes and judged by local Perry officials, and the Presentation of the Colors, again on Friday night to honor our Military and their families. Many educational events were available as well, such as Hennessy Arabians’ “Introduction to the Arabian Horse” with George Z, Christine Johnson of Iron Horse Farms’ Grooming Clinic for youth and visitors on Saturday so locals could have a “hands on” experience while there, with goodie bags provided for

attendees, and local Atlanta artist Suzanne Economopolous, who offered an “Equine Art School” for children aged 6-13 at her booth to learn how to draw beautiful Arabian horses. The Spotlight Stallion Auction was perhaps though, the most exciting event of the show. In its 10th year, Region 12 offers an exciting Spotlight Stallion program where foals from breedings bought at the auction from 80 top stallions from all over the world are able to compete in future Spotlight classes offered throughout the show with prize money reaching over $180,000 this year. The auction itself is a fun night full of excitement and anticipation, falling on Cinco De Mayo this year. Amongst a Mexican buffet and sombreros, over $150,000 was raised with the highest breeding going for over $10,000! Its great success was due in part to all of the wonderful people who helped coordinate and manage the event, adding to the overall experience of the Region 12 horse show and making it a night to remember. Region 12’s goal is to further the education and participation in our sport as well as offering tools to expedite your needs as members of their region. They set themselves up for success with the stalls being outside for farms to cook and hang out at the showgrounds while enjoying the show and the people there. It is a horse show that sets the tone for the show season and gets everyone excited for the Arabian horse!

Arabians Of T he Southeast

I

t is no wonder that the southeast part of the United States is home to some of the most exceptional Arabian bloodstock in the country. With its year round subtropical climate and natural beauty, the seven states of Region 12 make it a perfect fit and receives high marks. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, they have come together as one and make it difficult to not take notice. Offering a highly competitive regional horse show, a lucrative futurity and being home to a lot of horses that routinely score big titles on the national and global scene, who wouldn’t want to learn more?

Taking a closer look, AHT wanted to know what makes Region 12 tick. So, to discover the heartbeat of the region, we went to a selection of owners, breeders and exhibitors—to those who know best. Here is what they told us.

What is the main focus of your farm or breeding operation? Beautiful and athletic performance horses, specializing in western and hunter disciplines.

What is the main focus of your farm or breeding operation? It has always been to produce halter quality performance horses with good minds and correct conformation.

Why do you think the Southeast is such a strong territory for the Arabian horse? Region 12 has the largest geographical area of any region. We have a wide variety of farms that cover all the disciplines and this in turn, translates into Region 12 showing very well at Scottsdale and in National shows.

Why do you think the Southeast is such a strong territory for the Arabian horse? I first got involved with showing and breeding horses in the early 70’s. At that time, there were several large breeding and/or training facilities throughout the Southeast that had a mixture of quality bloodlines that offered a wide range of performance possibilities, as well as halter. Arabian classes were frequently offered at open shows for amateur owners. As more and more people were attracted to and purchased Arabian horses for show, breeding, endurance or pleasure riding, the reputation of the Arabian horse spread. Some specialty groups split off, i.e., straight Egyptian, Crabbet, Russian, etc. However, by and large, there was and still are a broad variety of top bloodlines available at a full range of prices. Also, we’ve been blessed with stellar trainers who have longevity and who are very supportive of amateur owners and newcomers to the breed.

How important are futurity programs, and particularly, the Spotlight Futurity program? They are the most important programs in our breed. The Spotlight program in Region 12 has had a great impact on our regional show. It brings in strong numbers and additional farms from outside our region to compete for the attractive Spotlight money classes. How do you promote new people into the Arabian horse industry? We have an uphill battle in South Carollina, as Tennessee Walkers and Quarter Horses are the dominate breeds in our area. However, we have numerous tours of school and civic groups. The media in our area follows our show successes each year and this has helped with our exposure. We always try to have a presence at Scottsdale and U.S. Nationals and be accessible at those shows. In 2016, what has been your proudest moment with the Arabian horse? PA Kid Khan winning the Open Western Pleasure class at Region 12 against a strong field—he looked great. I was so proud of him and Rob Bick.

arabians of the southeast

How important are futurity programs, and particularly, the Spotlight Futurity program? Not being in the Spotlight Futurity wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me if I wanted to purchase or breed to an exceptional individual. That being said, nearly every stallion I’ve bred to over the past several years is in the program. All of the Arabian futurity programs are good marketing tools, because new owners have the chance to get rewarded monetarily. How do you promote new people into the Arabian horse industry? I moved to a more rural area about 10 years ago, so the opportunity to promote the breed is considerably more challenging than it used to be. I’ve held trail rides for local clubs at our farm, which enables me to have some of our horses in the ride and show off the variety of beautiful, intelligent and friendly individuals we have at our farm. The farm is available for 4-H, FFA and other

| 21 | Ar abian Horse Times

school groups, as well as regular overnight camp outs for my youth Sunday school class. I also send out Facebook info with photos to people I know in the area, welcoming them to come see a foal being born, see a new foal or meet one of our champions. In 2016, what has been your proudest moment with the Arabian horse? I’d have to say my proudest moment, thus far, is how well El Hidalgo BH (Excalibur EA x FC Kochyna) did at the Region 12 Championships. I was thrilled when he won the 2-Year-Old Spotlight Futurity Championship with me after winning Reserve Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Open with Cory Byrne. To be 75 years old and show my own colt to this win was exhilarating! Hidalgo is a homebred, and I had done his conditioning myself until I sent him to Ted Carson less than three months earlier. I can’t say enough good things about how well Ted and his staff take care of their clients and their horses!

How do you promote new people into the Arabian horse industry? You promote new people by showing them a pathway to success through showing, breeding programs or horse sales. You protect them by selecting for them only what you would select for yourself. In 2016, what has been your proudest moment with the Arabian horse? Breeding and importing some of the top horses at Region 12.

Rohara Arabians • Orange Lake, FL What is the main focus of your farm or breeding operation? Almost 50 years have passed with our commitment to the Arabian horse just as strong. Our focus from the show ring to the breeding barn is to make a contribution to the Arabian horse. Why do you think the Southeast is such a strong territory for the Arabian horse? The southeast is so strong in the Arabian industry because of: 1. Climate 2. Excellent long time established breeders 3. Great trainers How important are futurity programs, and particularly, the Spotlight Futurity program? Futurity programs are our industry’s future. These programs promote growth through a return on investment. In the Region 12 Spotlight program, cash prizes are incentives to many breeders who participate in auction purchases and exhibiting in the program. There were 32 quality fillies alone, that participated in the Region 12 yearling class and over 100 mare nominations. This is impressive when over 100 Spotlight participants at the Region 12 show were the result of the Spotlight program.

arabians of the southeast

What is the main focus of your farm or breeding operation? Our main focus at Vicki Humphrey Training Center is producing national winners in the English and equitation divisions, training both horse and rider. The main focus of our breeding program is producing horses that meet the criteria needed for our riders to compete at the top level. Our pedigrees focus on English winners with great hocks, shoulders and necks, quality and good temperaments. How do you promote new people into the Arabian horse industry? I’d like to take this opportunity to focus on this one question as I feel it is the foundation for the campaign, “TO MAKE HORSE SHOWS GREAT AGAIN.” With the decline of breedings and the decline of entries at our shows, it is apparent that we are not doing our jobs as promoters of this great industry. We can blame the iPhone, X-Box, PlayStation, expensive shows that price the general public out of the game, and costs in general to maintain and care for horses. But if we want to have a future horse show industry, we need to be pro-active … now. 1. We need lesson programs. The Atlanta Riding Club is a lesson program we started to introduce children to the horse world. They ride Arabians. They watch the trainers work their show horses. And they fall in love. 2. There is no introductory beginner shows for new riders. We need an academy division at all of our shows. It doesn’t need to be

rated, it can be a volunteer judge and it can happen during lunch breaks. We need to build up to a National Academy division. IF we focus on these two things, I think our Industry can grow. You can’t sell a commodity without a consumer. And it is our job to mold these young riders into future consumers and supporters of the Arabian industry.

Suzann Vince

Iniziare Arabians with Ted Carson @ Butler Farms • White Oak, NC What is the main focus of your farm or breeding operation? I have always loved competing with my horses in the breeding classes, because I believe that conformation and very valuable bloodlines going back the full five generational timespan is crucial to having success in the breeding end of this industry. I think it is far too easy for new people who are drawn to the mystique and beauty of the Arabian horse to purchase a young prospect that they are drawn to or that a trainer steers them towards, but they forget that they need to take the time to really study the horses that came before that particular purchase, because those ancestors are paramount to what will crop up in their first generation of foals. I see this happen time and time again and well intentioned owners are disillusioned when the foal of their dreams is less than what they hoped for. Like any other passion in life regarding horses, you should study and educate yourself about the characteristics that you might not want to breed on and this can only be done by asking questions to those in our industry who are willing to share in your passion and who want you to succeed. I have been involved with the Arabian breed since 1978 and started out as an amateur rider. If any of my current fillies turns out to have what I believe they possess, in addition to their beauty which is athletic ability, I would love to consider showing again under saddle, even though I am not in my twenties or thirties anymore. Why do you think the Southeast is such a strong territory for the Arabian horse? Through my exposure of having my horses in residence at Butler Farms since 2013, I have met amazing people

arabians of the southeast

who are into all facets of competing, whether it be as an amateur halter handler, a western pleasure rider, or an owner who prefers to have their horse professionally shown. The Southeast territory, in my humble opinion, has some of the most dedicated, passionate, competitive horses and owners that I have ever had the extreme pleasure to be around. We all seem to share a camaraderie that is very genuine, very supportive and very informed, no matter what discipline grabs our hearts. I live in the PNW now, but I was Southern born and every time I go to any of the shows in the Southeast, I am reminded how special the Southern people are to be around. The competitors are focused, intently going for the prize, but when they get a second or a third, a top ten or nothing at all, I see how gracefully they take the happenings of that particular day and take that home, build on it and come back even more determined to better themselves at the next outing. For me, that is very inspirational and very special. How important are futurity programs, and particularly, the Spotlight Futurity program? I think that Region 12 has made the Spotlight Futurity program the best in the industry and it is solely because of the dedication to make the Stallion Futurity Auction be one of the most exciting and revered auctions in the industry. People from states far away value and appreciate the quality of the stallions offered to breed to which more often than not, succeed in producing foals that are as competitive as anywhere in the country. There is a true palatable excitement in the air during the Spotlight Futurity Auction at Region 12 every year, and all of us look forward to seeing the resulting foals compete as yearlings and two-year-olds in the breeding classes and as older entries in the performance classes. The Region 12 Spotlight Futurity is an amazing venue of future promise that keeps everyone who participates in either buying a breeding to a nominated stallion or purchasing a resulting foal the following year. There is appreciation for the hard work that it took to create the program and the very passionate work it takes to sustain it year after year after year. How do you promote new people into the Arabian horse industry? I just open my mouth and show my enthusiasm, which has never waned in the over 45 years I have spent having horses in my life (30 of those being with the Arabian breed). I try and share my knowledge with others which has only been obtained from others mentoring me along the way. Sometimes when I mention certain horses from the past to new people, I see their eyes widen and a smile comes their face, giving my heart a very nice feeling to know that in a small way I am hopefully adding to the excitement and wonderment of their newly found enthusiasm for the Arabian breed. I can attest that once these beautiful creatures take hold of your heart, I honestly believe that you never truly can step away from them, whether your participation is current or you have gone on to do other things. In 2016, what has been your proudest moment with the Arabian horse? This is a very easy question to answer. In May, 2015, I made my annual pilgrimage to Butler Farms to visit my filly, H Bella Bellezza H, who I purchased from Frank Hennessey in the

summer of 2014, at 8 weeks old, by Da Vinci FM and out of the beautiful El Nabila B daughter *Sashaa LHT. Having sold the family farm that was established in 1980 with a strong emphasis on the Russian Arabian horse, after the passing of both of my parents, I am reminded when visiting Butler Farms how much I miss the ability to look out of a window and see lovely mares and foals strolling through the beautiful pastures, or the babies rearing and playing with one another. During my visit, Ted presented all of the weanling fillies to Frances Butler, Travis Rice and myself, and I immediately put on the best poker face I had to not let anyone know that my heart was beating out of my chest and my palms had started to sweat. A beautiful 10-week-old filly sired by ML Mostly Padron and out of Serenitee CA, by SF Veraz and out of a Falcon BHF daughter, came trotting out, and something came over me that said this filly is going to be a forever joyful love in my life. In February, 2016, at the Scottsdale Show, we debuted Celestina INZ in the very competitive International Yearling Filly class. The stands were packed and the enthusiasm was high. I was again experiencing my “heart jumping out of my chest” moment. I believed in this baby and nothing was going to diminish my appreciation for her character, her spirit and her beauty, no matter the outcome. She won her section with the highest score of 331.5 and then two evenings later, she was named Gold Champion International Yearling Filly by the 5- judge panel who gave her four golds and one silver. They played the Olympic theme when she won, and the crowd—so many I will never meet—were cheering for my girl. It is not all about being at the pinnacle on any given day; it is about the support and the hard work that it takes to realize your dream.

Jaipur is out of one of the most beautiful mares in the world, Jullye el Ludjin (Ludjin el Jamaal x NV Justa Dream, by Bey Shah). At present time, *Jaipur stands in Belgium at Jadem Arabians, but we have plenty of great quality frozen semen here in Ocala. H Mobility H produces outstanding moving horses. He stands at Trowbridge’s Ltd. in Bridgewater, Connecticut, and is being shown by Mary Trowbridge. Why do you think the Southeast is such a strong territory for the Arabian horse? Marion County in Florida is considered a heaven for horses and is the horse capital of the world. Two main reasons for this are: 1.) Limestone is virtually under every single pasture, which causes the grass to be very rich in calcium and ensures strong and dense bones; and 2). An abundance of clear water (98 % purity). Because of Florida’s climate, horses can graze all year round, and there is no need to provide shelter in the barns during the winter. How important are futurity programs, and particularly, the Spotlight Futurity program? Futurity programs are the driving force behind our breeding and showing. We participate in the Spotlight Futurity Program by nominating our stallions and mares, and buying breedings through the auction. This year we sent 15 horses to the Region 12 Championship show, the majority of them participationg in the Spotlight classes. Our total winnings exceeded $16,000. We are very proud of our horses. How do you promote new people into the Arabian horse industry? We invite to the farm everyone who is interested in learning about the Arabian horse. We provide honest and realistic information about horses and the industry, and when it comes to marketing, we try to price our horses affordably and according to their real value. In 2016, what has been your proudest moment with the Arabian horse? Being named the Breeder Of Distinction at the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity for the second year in a row. n
