The Reining Futurity Classic will kick off on February 19th with the finals taking place on the 21st and 22nd (my two favorite nights of the year). Joe Betten and the Ames Familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generosity is the backbone of the ARHA. Their continued contributions create opportunities to grow and build our breed. 2020 Scottsdale Reining Futurity Classic ... An ARHA Tradition by Catherine Cole Ferandelli

ack in the late 90s, a gathering of Arabian reining horse enthusiasts met to address their shared concerns of the dwindling Arabian reining horse competition entries. Equally passionate in their belief that reining is one of the most dynamic of all the many Arabian horse disciplines, they sought to create a venue to ‘grab and gather’ their own and bring new blood into the sport. The founding members (including Mary Jane Brown, Russ Brown, Robb Walther and Eleanor Hamilton) recruited Audrey Zinke (owner of legendary Arabian reining stallions MHR Muscateal and Im The Real Deal) and Phyllis LaMalfa. Both were as fired up as benefactors to recruit members for an organization that would reawaken the Arabian reining horse. Thus was born the Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA), a group now 200 members strong whose showcase is the annual Scottsdale Reining Futurity Classic. ARHA’s journey as an organization has taken twists and turns over the years, always seeking to put on reining events infused with adrenalin for competitors, owners, breeders and anyone who wants to witness some of the most athletic equine maneuvers possible, all the while being scored performing the strict course of a specific pattern. Re-energized several years in by the generosity of iconic horsemen including Joe Betten, Tom Redmond and the late Dick Ames, the Scottsdale Reining Futurity Classic class was established. Designed to debut the best 4- and 5-year-old purebred and Half-Arabian reiners, the Futurity Classic not only offers a big payout ($75,000 for 2020, plus prize saddles and plenty of swag), it also promotes breeding, new enthusiasts, and pure, unshackled excitement. It’s nearly impossible to contain oneself while witnessing that near perfect run down, slide stop and roll back. The reining show pen delivers whoop, whoop and whistle from the spectators like no other.

The 2020 Scottsdale reining pen is bringing back a former favorite festivity— The Celebrity Slide. The event pairs a reining pro giving partnering instruction to an ‘individual of renown.’ No doubt, it is the ‘go to’ event for which no one knows the outcome. Will the celebrity stay on pattern is always the big unspoken question! Will they follow the trainer’s instruction? Rumor has it that reining enthusiast William Shatner is stepping up as one of the entries. Stay tuned!

As a result, the Scottsdale Reining classes are numerous, with amateur events divided by up to seven different age groups, and also by rider achievement. Inevitably, the excitement of showing a reiner beacons to riders from parts of the show circuit. Exampling this are two long-time saddle seat riders with Vicki Humphrey Training Center. Both have self-confessed to ‘dipping their toe’ into the reining show pen this year.

Laura Carrington, a proud 2019 U.S. National Champion Half-Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR 40 & Over winner nods in agreement, “I’ve ridden all my life so that helps in understanding the reining basics. I too am in awe of how disciplined these horses are, yet free with their movement. I’m also entered in the Half-Arabian Amateur Reining Limit Rider, and looking forward to some new and different horse show fun!”

Crystal McNutt, a reining legend in her own right, extolls this fact and adds, “The Scottsdale Reining Futurity has been a huge factor in improving the quality of Arabian reining horses. The excitement of seeing these young horses show their stuff is a great achievement. Still, what’s even better is that many of these horses go on to lengthy careers, showing with amateurs on their backs. This is a testimony to these horses for learning their jobs well and enjoying what they do for years on end. Many horses show well into their teens, showing and winning with riders of all ages and experience.”

National Saddle Seat Champion, plans to show in the Half-Arabian Amateur Reining Limit Rider. Izzy laughs, “I love riding saddle seat and in fact, many of its fundamentals translate to the fundamentals and timing of riding a reiner. These horses are amazing, truly solid citizens, yet they’re capable of ‘turning it on’ for a flashy performance. Lessons on a reiner really cranks up the adrenalin!”
