Happy New Year! Another year has passed, and I had so much to be thankful for in 2012. Without my family, friends, colleagues, and most of all the Arabian horse, my ride would have not been the same.

This past year, my parents and I traveled all over the world to various farms and horse shows. It is most fascinating to watch everyone’s individual way of expressing their passion and love for the Arabian horse, and in return, see the bond that the horses share with their caretakers who love them. In 2012, the Arabian horse community had so many gratifying moments that draw all of us together. Some special moments that stand out for me: listening to Lillie Brown share her story of how the Arabian horse helped her through her illness at the AHT Readers’ Choice Awards; Julliette Dell showing Nutcracker Sweet PF in the sectional class at Youth Nationals and grinning from ear to ear with each pass she made; Andrew Sellman and Mike Neal’s emotion to Pyro Thyme SA being named Champion in the Mike Villaseñor Senior Stallion Championship class; and the big hug that a young man gave his horse Tobey, at the Cedar Ridge Fall Fun Show when he was named Champion in the Hunt Seat Pleasure Championship. As with every year that passes, I get to wake up each morning and look outside to the beautiful mares and foals grazing in the pasture and know how blessed I am that I get to spend every day with these great creatures and the people that surround them. So here’s to “2013”—wishing you all a wonderful New Year and looking forward to sharing with you all our love and passion for the Arabian horse!

Gemini Acres Equine played host to frequent intimate gatherings and showings during the New Year’s weekend in Cave Creek, Ariz. These gatherings were in response to the many Arabian enthusiasts who came to Arizona for the Annual ArabHorse Farm Tours. During the showings at Gemini Acres, the charismatic Da Vinci FM was always the favorite of the appreciative crowd. A collective gasp of admiration was often heard as he was presented. A regal, statuesque stallion, he exuded masculine appeal while still being gentle enough to take a carrot delicately from the smallest hands in the crowd! It was as if he actually flirted with and understood his guests. His universal appeal was as strong as when he wowed the crowds that came to meet him at the Salon du Cheval show in Paris in 2009.

“He has come into his own as a sire,” many of the new year’s visitors said. “His contributions are truly significant.” It was not surprising that he was ranked as the top Leading Sire of Futurity Halter Winners in 2012. At 14, Da Vinci has finally found his stride. This stallion has always garnered worldwide appeal but now offers much more accessibility to breeders since he is standing at his own farm, Gemini Acres Equine. As a U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion, he is expected to be impressive, but the caliber of his offspring has endorsed this importance. Among the best known of his children are: U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt MPA Giovanni, now a successful sire in his own right, 2011 U.S. National Reserve Champion Yearling Arabian Filly Goddess Of Da Vinci, and most recently, Rohara Crown Prince, the 2012 U.S. National Champion 3-YearOld Colt. Internationally, his children have always been highly sought out as both show ring contenders and additions to esteemed breeding programs. In 2012 at the UAE National Arabian Horse Championship in Abu Dhabi, Ricardo Rivero presented Vicenta TO to a Gold National Championship as Junior Female. Da Vinci’s offspring have also gathered rose garlands at the major shows for their proud owners in both halter and now in performance as they are reaching that age of maturity. Their trainability is well known. They are sweet tempered, intelligent individuals who enjoy their relationships with their owners, handlers, and riders.
Goddess Of Da Vinci (Da Vinci FM x Goddess Of Marwan) Volume 43, No. 8 | 17
“His children are winning,” states Victor Ricigliano. Victor is part of the marketing team at Gemini Acres Equine. “In the past, some have thought of Da Vinci as only an incredible individual, that he was just an amazing stallion, but now they see he produces champions and good minded, trainable offspring. That is the true litmus test of a sire.” “This year will provide a unique opportunity for Arabian horse enthusiasts. Not only will some of Da Vinci’s best foals be in the ring, but also Da Vinci himself, will be making his return to the ring at Scottsdale,” Victor explains.

Preparing for Scottsdale, to be shown by Greg Gallún, Da Vinci’s daily conditioning and training is overseen by one of the Arabian horse industry’s longtime horsemen, Chris Barter, the manager at Gemini Acres Equine. Chris Barter’s attention to detail has assured that Da Vinci will be happy, healthy and in the proper state of mind and condition when he breaks the gate at Scottsdale. “Da Vinci is a once-in-a-lifetime type of horse. He is a happy and proud stallion and he knows what to do. He enjoys his daily work and when it’s time for him to show, he will be trailered from our farm here in Cave Creek to the capable hands of Greg Gallún at the show grounds. We like keeping our horses in-house and show from here. The trainer comes
to Gemini Acres to school and then we deliver the horse to the show for them. We can monitor our horses’ daily condition and stress levels better because we know them intimately, usually since they were foals. If a horse is ever feeling even just a little off, we recognize that quickly because we have a large handler to horse ratio.”

When asked, why bring Da Vinci back to the show ring, both Chris and Victor are in agreement. “We want people just to step back, take a look and realize what a beautiful Arabian stallion Da Vinci has become,” adding thoughtfully, “When you see Da Vinci, you see Arabian type.” Anticipation is building at Gemini Acres for the Scottsdale show. On deck, in addition to Da Vinci FM, will be his children: Goddess Of Da Vinci, whose mother was the National Champion Marwan Al Shaqab daughter, Goddess Of Marwan, and SW Da Vidica, out of the legendary mare SW Jasmine, by Magnum Psyche, and Princess
DaVinci GA, a daughter of the ethereal mare Symphony of Love, an El Nabila B daughter. Gemini Acres is enjoying working with world-class trainers this year at Scottsdale including Greg Gallún, Rodolfo Guzzo, Ricardo Rivero and Michael Byatt, who is on the lead of Goddess Of Da Vinci. For Gemini Acres Equine’s owners, Jim and Sally Bedeker, the response to Da Vinci and his foals has been especially gratifying. The quality of his foals has surpassed even what they expected when they purchased Da Vinci in 2007. “The offspring we’re getting now
Princess Davinci GA (Da Vinci FM x Symphony Of Love)

are incredible,” Jim says. “You pretty much know what you are going to get when you breed to Da Vinci, but this year, I think, we have found niches that work especially well. The season is still early, but we believe we are producing some of the best foals we ever have.” “We had a trainer here looking at Goddess Of Da Vinci the other day,” he continues, “and the first thing he said when they brought her out was, ‘Oh, my, she’s got that great Da Vinci attitude! How wonderful!’ That was even after Goddess had been worked just two hours earlier, as the trainer came on the spur of the moment. Goddess still came out with her tail over her back, snorting, blowing, and having a grand old time. That’s very consistent with Da Vinci offspring.” Chris agrees. “Of the Da Vinci offspring I have worked with, the babies are very similar,” he confirms. “They’ve got great attitudes and they light up in a minute. The similarities of the Da Vinci offspring are easy to see. We see the consistency in their beautiful faces, large dark eyes, excellent work attitude, along with good bone structure and size. They like themselves, they like to flag their tail and show off! Just like their sire!”
Envy C (Enzo x Silken Sable)
22 | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes
Along with his show personality, there is the very apparent tractability of Da Vinci’s interaction with humans. “We occasionally take Da Vinci out, nose him up to a mare and he snorts and blows and he shows off like a giant dragon,” says Victor with a smile. “You walk the mare away and less than 30 seconds later you can put a child up onto his back, bareback, for a ride. Da Vinci is that good-minded of a horse.” Da Vinci is bold, beautiful, and he’s also become a great producer, the true mark of any stallion. He produces horses that can show with attitude and style, along with good trainable minds. His offspring can be handled and loved by their amateur owner. They are what the Arabian horse is supposed to be, a show and family horse. As for Jim Bedeker, a welcome benefit has been that personality. “We weren’t able to be around Da Vinci that much until we brought him back to our farm in Arizona last year,” he offers. “Da Vinci is just a great horse to be around. It’s nice to be able to walk out into the barns, see your stallion, feel his presence and see how he responds to you. We get great enjoyment out of just looking at him and I especially love watching Sally feeding him carrots! ”

This year, we have a very special collection of horses to share with you. Together, they represent many of the greatest bloodlines and breeding programs of Arabian breeders from around the world. Alongside of our Great North American-bred horses you’ll see stallions and breeding stock that have been imported to the United States from noted breeding farms of the European nations, from the South American countries, from the Middle East and the United Arab Emirates. They are in fact … the horses of the “Desert.”

FACES & PLACES Sixth Annual ArabHorse Farm Tour Combines New People With Horse Rescue Benefit by Sue Adams
T
he sixth annual ArabHorse Farm Tour, opened on Friday, December 28th and extended through New Year’s Day on Tuesday, setting record attendance figures at each of the eleven Tour events.
Scott Baily, ArabHorse (The Arabian Horse Network) founder, summarized Tour 2012 in saying, “One of our primary objectives with the Farm Tour from the beginning has been to promote our breed to the general public, and we are comfortable saying that our Tour has succeeded. We are encouraged by the display of public interest and recognize that the industry in general needs to seek more innovative ways to be easily accessible in order to open markets at every level.” Schneiders Saddlery, the largest supplier of Arabian merchandise worldwide, joined the event as presenting sponsor. Additional sponsors and donors to the benefit auction for Healing Hearts Animal Rescue & Refuge combined to create a festive atmosphere. Participating farms were: Terry Holmes Arabians, Cactus Rose Ranch at Scheier Farms, McDonald Arabians Guzzo/Rivero Arabians, Culbreth Equine Training and Management, Stonewall Farm, Midwest Training Centre, Rae-Dawn Arabians, Arabian Expressions, Pegasus Arabians and Royal Arabians.

The 58th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show F e brua r y 14-24 , 2 013
4 ScottSdale | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes
Where To Begin? The Scottsdale Arabian and Half-Arabian Horse Show has
become a life experience. Since its modest beginnings at the
Arizona Biltmore in 1955, the Scottsdale Show has grown into the world’s largest, richest equine competition, and definitely
one of its most prestigious. Every February, breeders, owners, exhibitors, trainers and spectators join Arabian horse fanciers from all over the world, f locking to Scottsdale to enjoy a
spectacle that is unlike any other. And this year, Scottsdale has 100 more horses entered than they did last year!
More than 300,000 people came to see the show last year,
the event’s largest gate, ever. Vendors long ago foresaw that
colossal marketing and sales opportunities like this one rarely
occur. Thus, “We have more than 300 commercial exhibitors,” says AHAA staffer Rita Lathrop. “We’re up on the number of corporate and other commercial vendors this year. We have a
waiting list of over 100 commercial exhibitors and a 98 per cent return rate. Many of our vendors have been coming to the show
for decades, so each year’s show is like a family reunion.” Lathrop smiles. This will be her 17th year with the Scottsdale Show.
Volume 43, no. 8 | ScottSdale 5
An amateur group from the AHAA also comes out and helps with barn tours.” Barn tours are only one of the creative features AHAA members have conceived. “We had more than 2,500 people going on barn tours last year.” More about them later.
What’s new under the Arizona sun? “We are really excited about several things,” replies AHAA Executive Director Taryl O’Shea. “WestWorld has made many improvements; they have built this facility to meet our needs. The South Tent is being transformed into the South Hall, a permanent structure, and the North Tent will also become a permanent structure. The Equidome has been redesigned and is now enclosed, heated and cooled, with great lighting, and the seats have been reconfigured and will be more much comfortable than the old seats and bleachers, seating 4,000. “This is a $45 million project,” explains AHAA President Jay Allen. the building began in October. We will have some growing pains, but only for one year. When they get everything finished in 2014, this will be the best show facility imaginable, and they are building the facility around us and our needs. We just signed a new, 20-year contract.”
Sshameless About Adding Prize Money “Sshameless, who has presented the flag at opening ceremonies the final weekend with his owner, Lisa Shover, is the new Breyer Arabian

horse, sharing the stage with other great stallions etched in Breyer history such as Khemosabi, Huckleberry Bey and Thee Desperado. The public will have a chance to meet Sshameless, a multiple halter and open and amateur western pleasure national champion who received the 2012 Arabian Ambassador Award. Well known for his gentle, kind temperament, Sshameless will be 21 in March. “Sshameless is a great ambassador for the breed because he shows the ability of the breed, for a high-powered show stallion to let down and be a friend and companion. And that’s our main goal.” “We have kicked up the prize money in the Scottsdale Signature Stallion classes with Jackpot classes for mares 4 and over, stallions 4 and over, and geldings 4 and over,” notes AHAA President Jay Allen. “We have added money in the performance classes, too.” “Prize monies this year will be well over $1 million,” O’Shea continues. “We are happy to say that this year’s Scottsdale Signature Stallion classes will be paying $590,598.82, with the addition of the halter Jackpot classes for every Scottsdale Signature Stallion offspring, four years old or older that has ever been entered in an SSS class here.” “We also took a good look at our payouts and entry fees, and we have added more money, and standardized
our entry fees for purebreds and Half-Arabians,” O’Shea explains. “We have expanded the amateur owner classes in several of the most popular divisions. This will offer people who ship their horses in from other states the chance to show their horses in a few more classes, which makes a little more sense than bringing a horse hundreds or thousands of miles, to show in only one class. “Schneider’s has partnered with us, to offer championship coolers for all the youth classes, and people can watch the show stream live on our website through I Equine.
Lives of Their Own
as the art form it is. Watch for reining legend Lee Mancini and his newbie, AHAA Executive Director Taryl O’Shea, as one of this year’s teams. If you last exhibited at Scottsdale 20 years ago and haven’t been there since, you may find yourself frustrated by your inability to be in two or three places at once. WestWorld now has not only the Equidome and Wendell Arenas to scamper between, but you also have the Wells Fargo Advisors Arena 5, the Markel Insurance Arenas 6 and 7 (A and B), and Arena 8, where the cutting classes take place. We aren’t kidding about the need for comfortable shoes.
The Scottsdale Signature Stallion program has taken on a life of its own. Introduced in 2003 and distinguished by its rich paybacks, the program has experienced phenomenal growth every year. The SSS Auction, in which participating stallions’ services are auctioned, provides the financial support and incentive for the following year’s classes. Reining, too, has skyrocketed at Scottsdale. The Half-Arabian Reining Futurity debuted at Scottsdale in 2005, and identical classes and prize monies were added for purebreds in 2006. Each year has seen expanded offerings for horses and riders. Eleven days of world class reining is a far cry from earlier days, when all but a few of the horses and riders participating were earnest, but seriously inept. Sunday morning, February 24’s final two reining classes are the Arabian Reining Non-Pro Derby, followed by the HalfArabian/Anglo-Arabian Non-Pro Derby. Monday, February 18, will feature the Wells Fargo Advisors Invitational Celebrity Slide in Arena 5. Each team consists of a professional reining trainer and a volunteer, amateur or professional, whose expertise lies in another discipline, perhaps halter, English, driving or dressage. Beforehand, the reining professional coaches the newbie in the subtleties of reining

people a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what we do. On a slow day we have 150 people; on a heavier day, when we get 200 to 300 people, we have to split them into two groups.” Debbie Fleming also coordinates another popular activity: the Round Pen Demonstrations. These interesting, always well-attended presentations reflect the AHAA’s commitment to education. Each year four clinicians demonstrate and explain their particular specialties to the public. “Bob Leary demonstrates the four natural training aids,” explains Fleming. “He is the Head Coach and founder of Arizona State University’s Western Equestrian team, and a leading instructor at Scottsdale Community College’s equine program. Leary teaches riders how to utilize the four natural training aids, a method that allows riders to control their horses, raise their confidence and make them safer, more competent riders. “Regardless of your discipline, Lee Smith can help you raise your level of performance by becoming a partner with your horse and working together in harmony. Smith helps you develop your horsemanship skills through feel, timing, balance, and an understanding of equine psychology.
Tour A Barn, Get Educated, Paint A Pony, Meet A Horse The show will be packed with free events designed to appeal not only to horse people, but to the throngs of non-horse families that come to the event in numbers approaching 300,000, give or take. Debbie Fleming is in charge of the ‘Behind the Scenes Barn Tours’. “The barn tours have become one of our most popular activities,” she begins. “We’re on the local television news, and in Valley newspapers. One day the second weekend, over 300 people took the tour. That was a sight to see! Tours will be at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm on specified days.” “The barn tours have definitely been a success,” adds Jay Allen. “They are very educational, giving

“Sgt. West Brown, with the Scottsdale Mounted Police Unit, will demonstrate some of the police techniques the mounted officers use, training methods to ready their horses for street and crowd control, and how to safely, easily load your horse in a trailer. “Philipp Kast and partner Jill Loskil will demonstrate Sport Horse basics, focusing on the rules of Sport Horse classes, the proper tack, what the judges are looking for, and preparing the horse for the class.” A fifth educational presentation will be the eyeD™ Iris Scan Technology for Horses, which eliminates the need for branding or tattooing, because like fingerprints, no two irises are alike, iris scanning is the most accurate equine ID method. Scottsdale has long featured activities designed to create wonderful memories. The ‘Paint-A-Pony’ activity for
children allows them to take their painted models home with them, and the popular ‘Meet-a-Horse’ program allows visitors to meet, pet, and have their picture taken on an Arabian arrayed in native costume. The photos go home with them, as well.
The Young and the Restless Shoppers Rory O’ Neill is head wrangler for the AHAA Youth Club. “I’m excited to work with these kids because they are self-motivated, fun, and good horseman. They school and help train their own horses, clean stalls; they are true ‘worker bees’. “They are in the paddocks, selling rose garlands to the championship class winners. They make all the calls, which gives them life experiences about success and failure. Selling is a good life skill, and they learn not to take it personally when they get a ‘No, thanks.’ “Their youth party will be held in Arena 3, with food, music, bouncy house, and games for all ages. The youth rent everything, and arrange, staff, coordinate and execute the party themselves. These kids come from all walks of life; they’re all ages and all backgrounds, and they are good souls. Their exposure to the horses makes them more mature, and there aren’t a lot of big egos. They appreciate what they have.” The Scottsdale Show’s shopping expo holds something for everyone, for any budget. Show goers can hardly wait to browse through the exhibits, where they will find a dazzling assortment of unusual products and services they may never have seen elsewhere.
are wonderful to work with. The March of Dimes provides hundreds of volunteers for our show.
“Cox Charities has a little different approach to
charities. They have huge interaction (in donations) with their employees, plus what the show donates. The money goes to various charities. In May,
Vice-President Janice McCrea-Wight met with
Cox Charities, and they selected 10 applications;
$32,000 was distributed to various organizations.
Throughout the year, AHAA makes donations based on presentations to the Board; last year we gave
more than $100,000 to the community at large. “We have a wonderful relationship with Cox Communications,” Beethe adds. “We donate to their charities, and we share their media
commercials for the show, an excellent 30-minute promo that runs on local television, and so
forth. All of our donations are based on what is in the best interests of the Arabian horse.”
The foregoing only begins to hint at the tremendous sense of community the Arabian horse inspires in AHAA, and in everyone connected, even
remotely, with the Scottsdale Arabian Horse
Show. And community is perhaps the greatest
gift humans receive from the Arabian horse. ■
The event’s food court is always an adventure, as well. Be sure to sample the Indian fry bread, the many international offerings, an irresistible barbecue sandwich or a delicious Mexican spread. Mary Beethe is AHAA’s liaison with the show’s two main charities: The March of Dimes and Cox Charities. “Cox Charities is part of Cox Communications,” she explains. “Both charities

Since you only began competitive riding within the last 5 years, this is all the more remarkable! You won a National Trail Championship your second time at Nationals and have been consistently in the Top Ten in Trail every year since you have shown; including 3 Trail Top Tens in 2012. You have also won in Sport Horse under Saddle, In-Hand, and Hunt Seat classes. Iron Hearts
At Iron Horse Farms by Linda White

I
ron Horse Farms owner Trisha Phelan, and her staff, give more back to life than they take from it. Phelan’s philanthropic efforts have included supporting children’s foster care and helping Louisiana’s Hurricane Katrina victims rebuild their lives. When she bought Iron Horse Farm three years ago, her thoughts soon turned to what kind of role the horses might play in positively affecting children and adults with special needs. She first met Colleen Boylan-Cooper when she helped support a therapeutic riding program BoylanCooper had helped to establish in New Hampshire. BoylanCooper explains her own commitment to riding programs that support individuals with special needs.
“I loved Big Brother Big Sisters, but discovered I could combine my love of helping others and horses, so I moved back to Boston and helped start a non-profit therapeutic riding program in the area. Within two years, we had served almost 20 riders. Trisha Phelan’s daughter, Olivia was an equestrian, and during horse shows, Trisha would talk to me about our program in New Hampshire. She mentioned that she and Christine Johnston would love to eventually start something similar at Iron Horse Farms, in Canton, Ga. I returned to Atlanta with my husband in the summer of 2011.” Together the three women created Iron Hearts, Inc., a 501(c) 3 nonprofit therapeutic horsemanship program, dedicated to empowering children and adults with special needs through equine-assisted activities. The Iron Hearts team Phelan has assembled is a passionately committed group of professional horsewomen, volunteers, donors, and retired Arabian show horses. Each of the therapeutic riding instructors earned her certification from the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) in order to meet industry standards and stay abreast of industry trends.
“When I was in high school I volunteered at a therapeutic riding program in Boxford, N.H.,” she recalls. “I started riding when I was seven, and rode my first Arabian when I was 14, but it was not until I volunteered during a therapeutic riding lesson that I fully understood the capacity of horses to unlock human potential. I witnessed miracles that were directly related to people’s interaction with horses. I graduated from Tufts University in Boston with a teaching degree, but I felt limited teaching in a classroom environment. During my second year of teaching I bought a Half-Arabian park horse from Tish Kondas and left him with her. I decided to relocate to Atlanta to be with my horse, and it was there I started Christine Johnston (pictured), Trisha Phelan and my career in the non-profit Big Brothers Colleen Boylan-Cooper, founders of Iron Hearts, Inc. Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta.
“Our staff has 150 years’ combined horse experience,” marvels Colleen, who heads the Iron Horse Farms training staff she joined six years ago at the 19-acre facility. “Everyone associated with our program benefits far beyond their expectations, and Iron Hearts’ volunteers receive Volume 43, No. 8 | 129
tremendous satisfaction from donating their time and energy to the endeavor. Without them and our wonderful donors, we could never accomplish what we do every day. As the Iron Hearts program grows, we look forward to welcoming new members to the team.” Ray Bernick was interested in horses, so when he retired from corporate UPS and went to Iron Horse Farms for lessons, he also learned about the Iron Hearts program. “As an Iron Hearts volunteer, it’s nice to be able to help out children and their families in the community,” he explains. “I am able to give something back, and to learn more about the horses at the same time. I have done lessons with all the children. It’s not about me; what’s most meaningful for me is watching them develop a bond with the horses, then with their instructors and volunteers, and finally, to see them become more interactive with their families. A casual observer might only see a child or adult who is developmentally challenged in some way, but if they had seen that rider five or six months earlier, they would realize they now were seeing an entirely different person. “Part of the reward is working with the children as they become more confident and want to do more with the horses. I show them about grooming, saddling and unsaddling, putting on and taking off the bridle, and so forth. That helps me learn more, too. It’s win-win for everybody. The difference riding makes in these people’s lives is truly amazing.” 130 | A R A BI A N HoR Se T I meS
Amy Ridgway’s 5-year-old son, Andy, is one whose life has been positively changed by the Iron Hearts program. Andy was diagnosed with autism when he was 19 months old. His parents had enrolled Andy in various therapy programs, but when a neighbor introduced Andy’s parents to Christine Johnston, the family’s outlook brightened immediately. “We began with Iron Hearts in November 2011,” Amy Ridgway offers. “It has been awesome! These are genuinely good people. And everyone associated with the program understands Andy’s struggles with speech, language, and especially with strangers. This is a safe environment where he interacts with new people, and with the horses, in a non-threatening way. Riding at Iron Hearts has brought him out of his shell and helped so much with his social interaction. “The special needs riding program Iron Hearts has created is wonderful for his confidence, too. The Iron Hearts staff ‘gets it.’ They understand and nurture his interests and the things he likes, on his level. Sadly, that isn’t always the case; I wish more professionals had the Iron Hearts staff ’s understanding of autism. When Andy is riding the horse, he’s doing something he likes to do—something fun. We don’t even consider it therapy anymore. “For months, we couldn’t even get him to look at or touch a horse. He would become very agitated and fearful. Autistics often do well when they can watch someone they
know doing a particular activity, so we had Andy’s little brother, who is two years younger, ride the horse. Andy had the confidence to let us put him on a horse, because he was modeling himself after someone familiar. And Scooter, the horse he rides, is completely tuned in to Andy’s needs.” What about Iron Hearts’ equine team members? “Right now our teaching herd consists of four retired, national-winning purebred Arabian geldings,” replies Johnston. “Other therapeutic riding programs use Arabian horses, but we believe ours to be the only one that uses retired Arabian show horses.” Ed Nudd, Jr. bought Kit Karson V (Desperado V x La Kijan, by Bey Shah), who has eight national reining horse titles to his credit, from Trisha and Olivia Phelan in 2008. In March 2011, when an injury forced Nudd to quit riding, he returned the then-17-year-old gelding to the Phelans, who were just developing the Iron Hearts program at Iron Horse Farms. “Kit came to Iron Hearts a grumpy old man,” remembers Boylan-Cooper, “but he fell in love with the job, and now he’s a happy horse.” “He’s magical,” Johnston agrees. “Arabian horses truly crave interaction with humans. They grow bored, just standing around idle. It’s not unusual for retired Arabian show horses to grieve over their reduced contact with humans. When we
put Kit back to work, he perked right up; his new job has given him a new lease on life.” Terri Doukov donated Damascus Fire (Feazar Ahmur x Sharezaad, by El Fazaad,) who had a very successful training level and first level dressage career from 1999 through 2006. “He is amazing!” says Boylan-Cooper. “We’ve paired him with a 24-year-old woman with a traumatic brain injury. Damascus even shifts his body around so she can get on him more easily. “The Carpinella family donated Mean Motor Scooter (The Nobelest x Magics Lady Klu, by *Kluszyn), who is now 12,” Johnston continues. “He was a 2006 U.S. National Top Ten English Pleasure Junior Horse. Scooter is great with autistic children, and he and Damascus are especially good with riders who have physical challenges like difficulties with balance and equilibrium.” Above The Law (The Chief Justice x Aladdinsaffection, by *Aladdinn) came to Iron Hearts while Boylan-Cooper was on maternity leave (now the mother of identical twin girls Emma Rose and Anna Grace). In addition to national, Regional and Class A titles in country English pleasure, English show hack and mounted native costume, Above The Law won three 2003 Youth National Top Tens in each of those disciplines, JOTR and JTR 17 and Under. “We eventually would like to add a Half-Arabian with enough size to carry a bigger adult,” says Johnston, “but these horses’ hearts are already larger than life.” That larger-than-life Volume 43, No. 8 | 131
description applies to pretty much everyone, horse or human, involved in the program. The qualitative difference the program makes in the lives of participants at every level is stunning. Johnston’s inspiration for working with differently-abled riders came when she was growing up in Southern California. “It was a natural unfolding,” she reflects, looking back. “I volunteered informally, helping blind and deaf riders, those struggling with handicaps and stroke victims, although not through a formal therapeutic riding program. Then I volunteered for years with a community project in West Covina, Calif.” Johnston’s “Aha!” moment came when she watched her own horse, Zorro, interact with a terrified, highly agitated child who had broken his neck in a diving accident. The boy had become a paraplegic.
riders’ self-esteem, and giving them hope for the future. “The horse doesn’t care what the kids or adults look like, or what disability they have,” she begins. “Horses, and especially Arabian horses, know intuitively when the person is compromised in some way. They understand that they must be especially careful; that this is really precious cargo. Arabian horses’ innate kindness, and their natural interest in partnering with humans, makes them perfect candidates for what we ask of them. “With Andy, who is autistic with sensory integration disorder,” she continues. “The first two times he came here, he screamed and cried, and was too terrified to even go into the barn. His mother had to hold him for 45 minutes to get him to calm down. People with autism are usually highly intelligent, but unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells and situations can trigger panic and overwhelming fear.
“He had to be strapped into his wheelchair,” she remembers. “Whenever a horse approached him, it would trigger convulsions so severe that his wheelchair would bounce. Other horses would shy away, but when I led Zorro up to him and the boy began to convulse, Zorro was completely unafraid. He reached over and started nuzzling the boy’s face; he knew exactly what the child needed. When the little boy felt Zorro’s gentle touch, he looked up at him and began to cry. The experience changed his life—and mine, too.”
“Andy’s mother told us that when they go anyplace, they have to go through an identical routine: they have to leave the house at the same time, every time, and park in the exact same spot, for example. For a long time Andy would even wear the same clothes when he came here. By the third lesson, we finally were able to get him onto a horse. Now you can see his confidence building each time he rides. His achievement clearly pleases him, and that helps build his morale, and gives his family hope.
Iron Horse Farms owner Trisha Phelan, Johnston and BoylanCooper launched Iron Hearts last July. The equine-assisted plan is custom-tailored for each rider, based on that individual’s special needs and designed to enhance their outside treatment plans. Johnston attempts to describe the difference the interaction with the horses makes in building or restoring the
“Riding helps our riders physically, too,” she adds. “A horse’s pelvic structure is a mirror of ours, so learning to ride can help people learn or re-learn to walk. Thirty minutes of riding equals 500 steps!” The retired show horses on the team appear to find their new jobs transformative as well. Each of the Iron Hearts program’s four current lesson horses went through a rigorous screening and

training process to assure their human teammates that they would be reliable mounts for disabled adults and children. “Retired Arabian show horses are so bright and people-oriented,” says Boylan-Cooper, echoing Johnston’s observations. “When they’re turned out to a life of idleness, their interaction with humans is greatly reduced. Our horses’ new jobs have given them new purpose.” While Colleen Boylan-Cooper is not a PATH-certified instructor, Christine Johnston and staff members Kassie Webb and Shannon Toll are PATH-certified with Iron Hearts. Boylan-Cooper is happy to elaborate on the growing program and its volunteers. “We are honored when people donate to our program or volunteer to help our team,” she says. “Every dollar counts. Because of our very generous donors, we have been able to employ and care for our retired equine team, offer rider scholarships, recruit riders, train volunteers, build a wall for a ramp, and purchase necessary equipment for our riders’ wellbeing and development. We also have the best volunteers in the world! We are thankful for each and every one of them and understand whether they can help out one hour or 10 hours a week. The time and energy they have devoted to our program is what has made Iron Hearts so successful. They truly help to leave hoofprints in our riders’ hearts. “There are some physical demands,” she adds. “Volunteers who help with lessons must be fit enough to jog alongside a horse at a trot, while at the same time supporting a mounted rider with special needs. We only ask that volunteers give us sufficient
notice when they are unable to attend a lesson they’ve already committed to.” Volunteer opportunities at Iron Hearts also include fundraising, organizing special events, and assisting in the office. Boylan-Cooper, whose track record includes successful fund-raising and coordinating riding program-related events, is always looking for help. “We ask that our volunteers attend a 2-hour, hands-on orientation and training session prior to their participation with us,” she explains. “The mandatory training will not only introduce volunteers to the Iron Hearts mission, our team and our general policies, but the Iron Horse Farms’ professional horsewomen will also demonstrate everything volunteers need to know for their very important work with the Iron Hearts team. No matter what their previous experience with horses has been, they will discover new ideas and meet new friends here.” Boylan-Cooper concludes, “We look forward to growing our highly successful program by welcoming new riders from our wait list, employing additional retired Arabian and Half-Arabian show horses, and offering rider scholarships to deserving riders. We can only do so through the kind hearts of our volunteer donors. We are so appreciative of the people who have already made this program possible. It’s what makes programs like ours so special.” The Iron Hearts training sessions are offered monthly and taxdeductible donations of all sizes are welcomed and appreciated. From the Publisher Welcome to this joint edition of Arabian Horse Times and Tutto Arabi. We hope you, our readers, are enjoying this opportunity to “get acquainted around the world. I know I am! It has occurred to me, however, that while AHT has been a part of the Arabian community for more than 40 years now, and a leader on the American scene for much of that time, many of our foreign readers might not know our background. For their benefit, and for that of new readers here, I thought I might sketch out the highlights of our history. Arabian Horse Times was founded in 1970, and since then has had only two owners, both of whom were deeply engaged in the breed before going into publishing. Walter Mishek, of Waseca, Minn., founded the magazine; what may not be as readily
2 Tu t to A r A b i | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes
apparent to those who do not know him is Walter’s eye for a horse. He owned TJS Georgie Girl and Bask Calonett, both U.S. National Champion Mares (1978 and 1983), and “discovered”—or, in other words, bought and sold prior to their national championships—such luminaries as, among others, La Duquesa, Padrons Psyche and Maggdalina. Arabians are Walter’s life, just as they are mine. I purchased Arabian Horse Times in 2008. My family has been involved in the breed for more than 40 years; my parents having founded Cedar Ridge Arabians, in Jordan, Minn., in 1969. We breed, train, show and sell Arabian horses. Through all our years in Arabians, Cedar Ridge has earned 149 National Championships and Reserves and 519 Tops Tens in all disciplines in the horse industry. And the Times? It has grown through the years along with us. It started as a newsprint advertising publication, became a slick tabloid, and in 1974 was transformed into a beautiful four-color magazine. It has been a leader in innovation ever since. AHT published the first “theme issue” in the Arabian industry; in the years since then, the practice has become routine, but in 1974, when the Times offered an in-depth study of Gainey Arabians and the legendary stallion Ferzon, it was groundbreaking. The magazine also produced “Korona” for Polish breeders, and provided the forerunner to The Peyramid Report with the 1983 stand-alone publication, “The Egyptian Influence.” And over the years, some of the most respected professionals, breeders and amateurs in our breed have been our columnists or have written selected articles. Our collaboration with Tutto Arabi is another first for the
Arabian horse industry. We are thrilled to work more with the worldwide Arabian horse community, and hope that for all of us who love the breed, this partnership is beneficial. As far as I’m concerned, if you love Arabian horses, then you’re part of Arabian Horse Times’ circle of friends!

An Incendiary St allion
Pyro Thyme SA: by Kara Larson
For most, the final evening of the U.S. Nationals marks the end of a week of hard work and dedication, and for the spectators, it allows us to watch some of the finest Arabian horses in the most exciting classes of the show. This year was no exception; however, for Claire and Margaret Larson, the Stallion Championship class held so much more than a grand finale to the show. For these enduring and genuine Arabian horse owners, this class and its outcome marked a moment that they will certainly never forget.
4 Tu t to A r A b i | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes
Pyro Thyme’s reputation and rise to the top didn’t begin in this momentous win alone. Pyro’s journey with Claire and Margaret Larson began 6 years ago in their purchase of the stallion from June Yahola as a 7-year-old. He had already been national champion futurity stallion, Scottsdale supreme champion, and he was reserve national champion to Marwan with trainer Mike Neal. “I bought Pyro with the idea that I would stand him at stud. We knew he was special, and I believe it’s his quality that makes him such a good horse,” says Claire Larson. “If you’re looking at him and trying to find something wrong, it’s really tough to do. He’s such a solid individual all around—he’s well mannered out of the show ring as well. But he truly is a show horse. In my eyes, he’s a national champion for a reason.”
animated presence. For me, he’s undeniably special—a true Arabian stallion.”
Along with Claire and Margaret’s ownership is the training expertise of Andy Sellman. Andy’s success, especially in Pyro’s wins, is a direct product of his patience and dedication as a top Arabian horse trainer. “Pyro is a stallion that I feel honored to have the opportunity to train and show. He has a remarkable attitude, and in the show ring, he has this proud and
Pyro’s show career turned to a focus centered on building his breeding program after his 2007 national championship, but this past year, Claire had a couple of sparks to ignite Pyro’s fire once more. “You know, I always said that I’d never bring him back to Nationals, but when we took him to Louisville this year, he did so well and he looked so good that I just had to bring him back. We got
Horses, like other animals, tend to have their favorite people and for Pyro, his favorite would be Claire’s granddaughter, Angie Sellman. “Pyro is a once-in-alifetime horse that I am so thankful to know. He is always a gentleman with tremendous spirit and kindness. He and I share a special bond that is irreplaceable in my heart!” Angie continues, “His championship win in 2012 was truly epic; it will forever be an outstanding achievement and wonderful memory for my grandparents, the entire Argent Farms team and all of our friends who supported us through it all! From start to finish I thought it was absolutely perfect!”

such positive feedback, and with the support of Andy and a lot of other people, we decided that we wanted to come back to U.S. Nationals for the chance to win,” shares Claire. “We just really wanted people to be able to see him in the show ring again. He’s the best stallion that I’ve ever owned and in my opinion, one of the best stallions ever.”
beautiful stallions and their talented and dedicated handlers, this class’ winner was to be the first recipient of the “Mike Villaseñor Memorial Trophy” donated and dedicated by the friends of Mike Villaseñor. The presenter of this trophy, Mike Neal, was a dear friend and colleague of Mike Villaseñor.
Mike Neal, as Pyro’s trainer from the time he was a yearling to the age of 7 when Claire bought him, knows the horse on a personal level. Through the years, he has seen his progression as a stallion and agrees that this year, Pyro was better than ever. “Andy has done a great job with him and he’s just got prettier with age. He’s Bask, so he’s a slow maturing horse. For a 12-year-old stallion to win that award, it was awesome because he is really coming into himself right now. And it really couldn’t happen to a nicer guy than Claire Larson.”
“I can’t imagine a better way to remember and honor Mike V.,” says Mike Neal. “He was a great person—just an incredible guy, and so knowledgeable about the horses. I think it’s very special that Pyro won this first honor.” Mike went on to share Pyro’s beginnings in life as an orphan foal and the six years of training they had together. He also shared a story about Mike V. and Pyro.
Everything in Pyro’s successful and full life seemed to be accumulating to this moment—this stallion championship class at the 2012 U.S. Nationals. In addition to the

“When I told Mike about Pyro when I had him as a yearling, he came down to see him because I was telling him how special he was.” Mike continues, “Mike agreed that Pyro could be a great one. He loved that horse as much as I did, so to have Pyro win at Nationals the first year of the memorial trophy was just an incredible feeling.”
Everyone in Ford Truck Arena felt the incendiary greatness that Pyro possessed that night. The stallion had an effortless confidence that became apparent the second he loftily trotted into the arena. The arena lit up with his presence, and no one could deny the 12-yearold stallion his championship titles of “Viewer’s Choice” and 2012 U.S. National Champion Stallion. When Pyro and Andy were the final duo to have their number called, the crowd went momentarily silent, only to finally hear what they had been long awaiting. But when it was announced, there was nothing subtle or muted about the crowd’s reaction. Claire, Margaret, family, friends, and colleagues, poured into the arena to surround Pyro for a win picture. And this great crowd was filled with tears and hugs, as the chant of Pyro’s name rang throughout the arena. It was certainly a moment Claire, Margaret, and many others will never forget. “We were thrilled with the response of the crowd at Nationals,” shares Claire. “They were just
wild about him, which always makes it better. It was such a pleasure and honor to me that everyone was so excited about him—it was really an unforgettable night and win. I am very proud of him and very proud of everyone that was a part of it.” Andy Sellman also thinks back on the win. “I couldn’t believe it. There was such amazing energy for Pyro, and the thing I realized that night was, ‘Whoa, I didn’t realize we have so many friends!’” But honestly, every person that was in the picture is somehow or another a part of our lives or Pyro’s life or Claire and Margaret’s life. It was so cool how many people were supportive. Another thing that made it so wonderful was winning the Viewer’s Choice Award—having Pyro be so well received and having our friends there to share the moment with Claire and with all of us. Experiences like that are made better when surrounded by friends and family, and that’s exactly what we had.” n

The following charts are ranked both on number of winners (get) and on a point system. The purebred halter and performance sires are assigned points as follows: Top Ten: 5 pts.; Reserve Champion: 8 pts.; and Champion: 10 pts. A versatile horse may win in a number of different classes. Thus, a purebred stallion represented by just one son or daughter with several wins is included in the points chart, but only once in number of winners. In the Half-Arabian charts, Half-Arabian winners were all the purebred sire requires to make the list. To make the overall charts, the sire needed to have points in both halter and performance with purebred and/or Half-Arabian winners. Only championship classes were considered.

SPECIAL TROPHIES To make the Sunday championship day even more delightful for all participants, in between the medal competitions, organizers and sponsors presented several other special trophies. And so Trophy Espoir for the junior horse selected by its sponsor (Al Khalediah Stables) went to Barzan Al Shahania (by Stival) - undefeated recently at the US showrings being US National Junior Champion in 2011 and twice Breeders World Cup Las Vegas Supreme Champion in 2011 and 2012. Best Movements sponsored by Al Nayfat Stud went this time to Poland for female – Pinga, and male – Palatino (by Pesal) both from Janów Podlaski Stud. The same Polish Stud was also honored by the Sponsor – Al Shaqab Stud, as the Best Breeder and Owner of the competing horses. In turn Al Shaqab became the Best Stud (the biggest number of points collected by horses placed 1-4 in the classes). Al Shaqab representatives went to the arena once more, and for sixth time in a row (!) for the trophy of Best Sire – Athbah Stud Award for the incomparable Marwan Al Shaqab. Also best Straight Egyptian horses had their moments of glory at the World Championships with trophies presented by Rabab Stud to the Best Egyptian Female – El Sayyeda (by Imperial Baarez) bred by Nadia Amer in the USA and owned by Ath-
bah Stud and Male – DHS Waheeb El Nil (by Imperial Kamill) from Dowdstown House Stud, Ireland. At last but not least – the show was hosted in France so the organizers and sponsor – ACA Organization took a chance to present the trophy Cup of France, for the horses collecting points at the shows in this country throughout 2012. The French winner was HG Sweet Fantasy (by Psyrasic) owned by Flavie Allman. Again Paris competition shown that it can be like the December weather in France - sometimes easy to be forecasted but sometimes very surprising. It can make your dreams come true, but there is always a limited number of medals to win, even for such a beautiful creature as the Arabian horse, those best ones from all the world... This is why we are looking forward to see you next time for another edition of this unusual event!

Leaders Of The Times: January Calendar Feature
5-Time National Champion
DA Valentino x Sol Natique
David Boggs shares his earlier quote with us that truly captures the heart and spirit of Vitorio … “Looking back ... Vitorio captivated my heart from the moment Don Morse and I laid eyes on him when he was just a yearling at a presentation in Scottsdale. Vitorio absolutely knows that he was born to be great—above and among others. Today he might very well be on his way to setting a show record greater than any stallion ever has in the Arabian breed, having already garnered five national and international halter championships. Vitorio stands tall with huge, dark eyes, and an amazing long neck with perfect shape and delicate throat latch. From what I have seen thus far, Vitorio is a sire of extraordinary merit and even greater potential. I’ll go on record today adding to his accolades and his list of accomplishments the term, “Genetic Giant!” —David Boggs
226 | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes
Vitorio
With victories spanning the globe, the international reception for Vitorio has been nothing short of sensational—a stallion young in age, but seasoned by unmatched accomplishments! Vitorio has already garnered more honors in the beginning of his career than most stallions accomplish in an entire lifetime. Add to this Vitorio’s bright future as a sire, and this young stallion’s already demonstrated ability to pass on the legacy of greatness he inherited and it appears that the term “Genetic Giant” just might be correct. His dam line is filled with the blood of the immortals, *Salon and *Naborr. His sire line is headlined by the world renowned *El Shaklan, accented by the quality of Padrons Psyche, and punctuated by the beauty of Versace. His sire, DA Valentino, is one of the most accomplished halter stallions of all time and is producing greatness that is shattering the record books. ■

I
’ve been breeding horses since I was 17 years old, and I remember most of the horses that were alive at the time. I remember *Witez II, Abu Farwa, even *Raffles, old, with a broken leg. I remember the original Gainey horses, Alice Payne’s Asil Arabians, Jedell Arabians, Whitmore Arabians, and the early Lasma horses, of course. And such horses as Fadjur, Mujahid, Synbad and Radamason. I remember the well-known horses when I showed Bay-Abi to U.S. National Champion Stallion at Estes Park in 1962, and the other leading stallions when I showed Bay El Bey to his stallion championship win at the Scottsdale Show, back when it was held at the McCormick Ranch. I learned the studbook as my mom and I wrote out pedigrees, and as I saw the horses, I remembered them.

I also was lucky to ride as a kid with a wonderful rancher lady named Syd. I learned correct conformation from her and what made up a good horse. I was in love with everything about a horse; I trimmed the feet of all my horses until I had 28 horses, and no skin left on my knuckles from the rasp when the horses were jumping up and down. I trained my own horses, drove the van, and had tunnel vision about doing my best—and I worried if I could keep things going financially. I have taken my bumps and bruises along the way, had my feelings hurt and wondered when my turn would come to see appreciation for the horses I was breeding. That is the background to my 10 Commandments of breeding. I give them to you. Volume 43, No. 8 | 231
1
Breed toward your ideal horse. Don’t be swayed by the voices of others. If you have done your homework, in time, others will appreciate what you have accomplished. Many years ago, in 1961, the fledgling Varian Arabian Farm— my mom and dad and I—imported three mares from Poland: *Bachantka, *Naganka and *Ostroga (another story there). I bred two of them to straight Polish stallions. It was before Lasma brought *Bask to the United States; I used *Ardahan, but the cross was not a good one. I stopped using the Polish stallions that were here at that time on our three Polish mares, and started breeding to my own stallion, Bay-Abi. With that, I got the beginning of a wonderful line of mares from *Bachantka, and when *Naganka was bred to Bay-Abi, she gave us, among others, the kingmaker, Bay El Bey. People were not particularly nice to me about the fact that I wasn’t breeding straight Polish. I even heard that I was “bastardizing,” that I was merely breeding for the show ring and I would never be a master breeder. It was not a time that I could say, “Yes, but look! What I’m getting is so much better!” So I was quiet, and must admit that my feelings were crushed that anyone felt I was not really interested in breeding good horses. Now, 40 or 50 years later, it’s not that I care to say, “See, I told you so,” but I would say, “Breed for your ideal horse. Don’t be swayed by the voices of others.” If you’ve done your homework, and I had, others will appreciate what you have accomplished. People need to know this: if you really want to breed horses, then you must stick to what you believe is your ideal horse.
2
Recognize that you are breeding Arabians and stay within your interpretation of the breed standards.
Read the breed standards very carefully, because we do have breed standards. They talk about balance and conformation, and horses that have type but that are still useful and conformationally correct. This is most important. So, if you plan to breed Arabian horses that are extremely beautiful to you, and you are following breed type, then you should feel secure in breeding in that direction. You have to feel secure about it—not because of what someone tells you, but because you have done your homework and looked into the standards of our breed. Sometimes you don’t succeed. There may be a period of time when people disagree with you on what you are breeding, but if you are breeding for quality and you are staying within the interpretation of the breed, there will be others who will find what you are accomplishing worthwhile.
3
Breed equally for Arabian type, performance qualities, disposition and trainability.
We tend to forget that all of this goes together to make up an Arabian horse. The Arabian horse is not just type and not just performance; he can’t be just a horse that we pet because he is too difficult or incompatible to accept training. There is no reason in this day and age that our Arabian horses should not have all those qualities. And if not, then you need to address that in your breeding decisions.

Never forget: no foot, no horse.
I’m proud to say that we don’t have navicular at Varian Arabians. I can ride our horses barefoot. We should never forget that no foot, no horse. If a horse can’t be functional, he has no use other than to procreate, and in the long run, the breed won’t survive if we can only look at them. It is such a simple thing. Basically, these horses still need to be able to carry a person.
5
Always strive toward a horse of usable disposition, plus beauty. Neither is good without the other.
Today, there is no reason that we have to give up one for the other. There is no excuse for not having a horse that is useful as well as beautiful; you shouldn’t breed for less.
6
Follow the lead your horses set for you. The next generation need not be similar in phenotype to the generation before, but each generation must be consistent in overall quality. Huckleberry Bey was dissimilar to his mother and father, and he was a surprise when he came along—I didn’t know quite what I was looking at, but I kept looking at him, because he was so unique. I waited to see what he was going to become; when he was 9 months old, I knew I had a horse that wouldof fera differenta ndne woppor tunity forour br eed. And he sired himself in all of his sons and daughters.
Huckleberry Bey (Bay El Bey x Taffona, by Raffon)

Bay El Bey definitely included his mother and father, and while he sired some similarity to Bay-Abi, he also sired differently. As I’ve mentioned before, Bay-Abi was the yeast; he always seemed to take the best part of a mare and himself and put it together. So, if you have a young horse that comes out of your breeding program that is quite different, but still with exceptional qualities, don’t be discouraged. You may have a diamond that just doesn’t look like the other diamonds. I think that often those animals—the ones that are just different—are the great breeding horses, especially in stallions. You might have a stallion like Secretariat that is so much better than anything else in his breed, yet he never sired another as good as himself. Most stallions don’t; the great ones don’t necessarily sire themselves, but they might sire another step in the line. It just may not be a straight-ahead step. It may go in a different direction. Bay-Abi was a western type horse, very curvy, with a short back, and he sired Bay El Bey, who was 15.2, with a higher-set neck. He was a little more Thoroughbred-y looking; he could have been a great reining horse, and was an excellent English horse. Bay El Bey sired Huckleberry Bey, who was a beautiful English horse, unique to our breed. As a baby, Huckleberry Bey looked like a carousel horse, right off the merry-go-round, all arches and curves. And Huck sired Desperado V, who is strong and husky and very muscular, with exceptional bone and a beautiful face. He is a wonderful working western horse sire, and now is setting standards with his broodmares in halter as well as performance.

There is no breed like the Arabian, which within a direct line has been able to sire horses that can trot as big as our horses can trot and can turn a cow as hard on a fence. Within a line, we’ve gone from the fanciest English horses to the best working cow horses. No breed can do that except the Arabian. That’s why I say:
7
Breed forward. Look ahead. Wonderful new surprises may be awaiting you. Recognize them when they occur.
What I am saying is that if your foal doesn’t necessarily look like its sire or dam, but is of exceptional quality, don’t necessarily discard it. If it still has overall quality, you may have a wonderful surprise. It may be the key to the vault. Huckleberry Bey and Khemosabi are examples of horses that didn’t look like their parents, but were extraordinary individuals themselves and they sired their likeness.
8
It is not difficult to improve the produce of a poor quality mare in one generation. It is not even difficult to improve the produce of an average mare in one generation. What is difficult is to improve the produce of an exceptional mare generation after generation. That takes real skill, knowledge, gut instinct, and vision. Your tail-female line will almost always be your weakest line. This is because often a breeder starts off with an average or poor quality mare and attempts to breed the produce up. You can breed the mare to a better stallion and get a better quality foal, and you can breed that foal to a better stallion and get a better foal.

But if you really want to be sure that you have a program that is going to be consistent as breeding stock, you would like, as a breeder, that the bottom line generation of mares be very, very good.
9
Don’t be afraid to appreciate the qualities of others’ horses. Breeding is a competition with yourself, not with others.
Other people’s horses are where you look to see what you may want to add into your program. If your breeding becomes a competition with others, then you will turn away from things you need to include in your horses simply because you are in competition with them. Your mind needs to be open to what you’re seeing, without any feelings of prejudice or envy. If you can keep your mind open and you can appreciate the qualities you would like in your horses, then you’ll have much more opportunity to be successful.
10
Consider your horse’s attributes before you consider his/her negatives. All horses have both. It is for you to determine how positive his/her good qualities are before you dwell on the negatives. We can become so negative about horses that we close our minds to the good parts of a horse. We need to look at the positives first. Then, if there are not enough positives, do not breed that horse. Or if he has positives, but the negatives are too strong, again, don’t breed that horse. All horses will have some negatives; the positives just need to strongly outweigh the negatives, so look for the positives first. There is one overall commandment for all of us, and that is when we consider buying or breeding to a horse, we take into account not only what will be good for our own program, but what will be good for the breed as a whole. When I bought Audacious PS, I wasn’t thinking just of what my program needed, but also about what the Arabian breed today needed. (When I bought Jullyen El Jamaal, I was in the position of knowing I had to breed out from our sire lines. I was getting too much of the same blood, so I needed an outcross and Jullyen has been a huge asset to us and other breeders around the world.) Assuming that the stallion you’re considering is of very high quality and has no glaring major faults, I usually say that you need the stallion to contribute at least three things to the breed. Using have great ears, but I thought the breed could use better), eyes, and tail carriage—a true tail carriage, charisma, and happiness, carried by a horse who maintains a gentle mind. A good Arabian horse is alert, responsive, willing and gentle, not overly hot and reactive.

e have to remember that we’re breeding an animal that carries on the qualities that came from the desert, and although we have bred the Arabian to be much more beautiful than he was when he was carrying his owner to battle, we need to keep those original qualities— that gentle, strong, sound hoarse that has made the Arabian the horse of choice for upgrading almost all other breeds for centuries. So as breeders who are seriously considering breeding Arabian horses, we have to take that as an important obligation. We must remember what this breed is about and where it comes from, but continue to look forward to where we are going. That’s the joy of breeding Arabian horses.

When it comes to breeding Arabian horses, friends should not be a part of it. Enemies should not be a part of it. The latest selling price should not be a part of it. It’s simply opening your eyes and letting what you see flow in, unhindered by outside influences.
Sheila Varian, of Arroyo Grande, Calif., has bred,
Everyone tries to make this harder than it is. Sit down and watch your horse in the field until you know everything about it, not in its standup position or in the show ring with its tail over its back, but quietly somewhere, so you can absorb what you’re seeing. Then you must add the style, the charisma, the look—the thing that sets the Arabian apart from all other breeds and makes him unique in the world.

From The Table by Jeff Tracy
The Christmas season has become memories, we have averted albeit temporarily, the fiscal cliff, and by now you should be in the process of breaking your second New Year’s resolution. The weather, a bit chilly, is much akin to your outlook for 2013. There is hope on the horizon. The annual pilgrimage to Scottsdale in February does brighten the attitude a bit. The Mecca of the Arabian horse in the western hemisphere, the annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show kicks off the show season much like the Masters launches the golf season for those who chase the dimpled white ball. To be sure, the Scottsdale show is not simply a horse show; it is an event, a showcase and a well-deserved respite from everyday life. The sunshine (most of the time) mixed with exhibits, barn parties, and nightlife, create the atmosphere for the show that is equaled nowhere else. I’ve been most everywhere else, so I speak from experience. So, the question is, how does one prepare for their sojourn to Scottsdale? Read the Times and surf the sites on the web? Yes, that is part of it, but you must prepare yourself mentally and physically for your trek. Beginning in late January, I recommend you start packing; you will no doubt pack and re-pack at least two times making sure you have all the correct apparel and accessories. I also recommend you change your eating habits. Start by abandoning your New Year’s diet; you will want to pick it up again the first of March. Eat more like you are attending a barn party—more finger food, BBQ, deep fried anything. Consume more adult beverages; say three to four nights per week at first. You will need to build up a higher tolerance level. You may be able to reach 10 days in a row if you get enough practice in by the time you land at Skyharbor.
Pay down your credit card balances from the holidays. Undoubtedly, Schneiders, Bennett’s, or Bill and Corky Fairchild will have something new you just can’t live without. I’m fairly certain you will find something at one or more of the 250+ vendors. Comfortable shoes are important. By the third day your feet will be howling from hiking between Wendell and the Equidome. All of the golf carts will be rented by the time you arrive so erase that thought and start walking at least 5 miles per day. Don’t forget to carry a weight equal to a show program. Anti-inflammatory and diuretic medicine may also help. Remember, you must consume lots of liquids. Outerwear that shields you from the cold—it’s the desert remember—and shades you from the sun is important. This may also come in handy when used as a seat cushion, a knapsack, a floatation device or a sleeping bag (going back to the rental car thing again). If you don’t believe me on how cold it can get there, go through the barns and ask one of the grooms who just spent a night wrapped in a horse cooler, sleeping on a tack trunk. I’m fairly certain they will give you a quick lesson in the ambient temperature variations in the Arizona desert. I did that myself back in 1975 while working for Lasma; it still makes me shiver at the thought. Sunscreen is a must. Far too many have returned home to their snow covered fields looking like a red Gumby. Sunglasses. Make sure they are big enough to hide the street map of Cleveland etched on your eyeballs first thing in the morning.
Deprive yourself of at least three hours of sleep from your normal routine, and learn how to take 20 minute power naps. (Do this in your car at home so your rental car does not seem awkward to you). You will want to increase your sleep depravity as the show approaches.
A cell phone with a fully charged battery. You might have to make an important call or just want to annoy the hell out of the person sitting in front of you who is trying to watch a class intently. Cell phones also come in handy at barn parties. Some interesting photos have been snapped at a few of these functions—you would not want to miss your big chance.
Lift a 5 lb. weight daily for at least two hours so you can carry around the show program without contracting tendonitis.
Speaking of barn parties, there will be at least one every 15 minutes after the first weekend of the show. The public is welcome to these.

Chili Jeffy
2 lbs. good marbled sirloin 24 oz. tomato sauce 1 whole white onion 1 cup chopped roasted garlic 12 oz. of corn, preferably the big niblets 8 oz. sliced mushrooms 1 large red pepper 1 large green pepper 1 large yellow pepper 1 can Ro-Tel® Diced Tomatoes & Green Chilies salt pepper chili powder a large pile of flour tortillas
other favorite spices if you have something that really turns your crank. Let this cook for about 30 minutes while still on a medium heat. Now its crying time again. Grab that onion and chop it into little squares and make a pile of those squares so that you don’t forget to put it into your mixture that you should be stirring every once in awhile. After the 30 minutes on medium heat, add the onions and the rest of the garlic. This is where I put in the chili powder. I use a mild to medium grade because most of the people around the ranch have lily lips.
Take your best knife, the one grandma hasn’t tried to open the tuna fish can with, and cut the sirloin into small chunks. You know the ones that will fit on your fork or a spoon. Leave a little fat on them for flavoring when they’re in the pot. Brown the meat in a large heavy-duty kettle or roasting dish, add part of the garlic, salt and pepper when cooking your cow. After old Bessie is the shade of a molasses cookie, add the tomato sauce, Ro-Tel®, corn and mushrooms. Cover kettle with lid, and continue to cook this on a medium heat while you’re cutting up the peppers. Add the peppers, minus the seeds and stems, to your mixture along with some salt and pepper. You may wish to add
Reduce the heat to a simmer, and let your version of Chili Jeffy cook for another 1-2 hours while you go do something fun like ride your horse. *Note: I recommend using Painted Hills Natural Beef or another high quality natural beef for this recipe. I have found that it has the best flavor with full marbling, and is tender regardless of the cut. *Also note that this is best cooked with a lid on it. This will help keep the moisture and the flavor in the mixture, plus it helps tenderize the meat for those who have a tough time eating anything that requires a full set of choppers. Serve with a large pile of warm flour tortillas.
Pan Fried Mango Chicken 2 large skinless chicken breasts 1 medium mango diced or chunked 4 green onions chopped 3 tbsp. butter 2 tsp. powdered honey 2 garlic cloves white pepper salt Trim the excess fat from the breasts and cut into long strips. You can cut them in half if you wish.
In a non-stick frying pan, add the butter and heat to a medium high heat. Place the chicken strips in the pan and season to taste with the salt, white pepper, garlic (using a garlic press) and powdered honey. Lightly brown the chicken on one side then turn over. Once the chicken is turned, add the mango. Be sure and stir the mango around in the pan so all the pieces of chicken have contact with the mango. Add the green onions about a minute before the chicken is done. Serve on a bed of baby spinach. You can garnish with some other fruit or small cherry or grape tomatoes.

Pulled Pork Tacos 3 pounds pork shoulder 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes with mild green chilies 1 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup apple juice 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 tsp. chili powder 1/2 tsp. coarse salt 16 (6 inch) corn tortillas 4 ripe avocados, peeled, seeded and sliced 1 cup tomatillo salsa (or salsa verde) 1 cup Daisy® Brand sour cream Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the pork in a 4-quart Dutch oven. Combine the tomatoes, onion, apple juice, lime juice, garlic, chili powder and salt
in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture over the pork and cover. Bake the roast for 3 to 3 1/2 hours or until the pork is very tender. Remove the pork from the pan and cool slightly. Remove any fat or bones and shred the pork with a fork. Strain the pan juices and return the tomatoes and onions to the Dutch oven. Add the pork to the sauce and mix well. Skim the fat from the pan juices. If the pork is dry, moisten with a little additional juice. Wrap the tortillas in aluminum foil and heat for about 15 minutes or until warm. Place 1/4 cup meat on each tortilla. Top each taco with avocado slices, tomatillo salsa and a dollop of sour cream. Makes 16 Tacos
Surf and Turf Kebabs * 3 lbs. beef flanken-style ribs ends * 1 lb. jumbo Gulf prawns cherry tomatoes yellow bell pepper garlic salt black pepper orange This is a very easy recipe. Just remember that the prawns will cook much faster than the beef so grill the beef as per the directions below.
Feel free to enjoy the previews, and the other festivities. Come with an appetite and a thirst for more than just knowledge of the Arabian horse. They are for everyone. Regarding appetites, there are far too many restaurants in the Scottsdale area to mention, or for you to try in just one visit. I’ve listed a few to get you started; after that you are on your own. Most nights, there are no performance classes, so hitting a few of these or others should not be a problem.* *Just a note here, I’m still banned from the Denny’s on Scottsdale Rd. Years ago, the “Please Wait To Be Seated” free-standing sign from inside the restaurant disappeared. I was 20 miles away in Carefree, but it was my friends and my rental car that were reportedly involved. I never did ever really figure that one out! Be aware that Denny’s is not on my list for reasons other than the above listed incident. I’ve provided some recipes to help acclimate your appetite for your visit to Scottsdale. I recommend trying these at home or at your first horse show where you cannot see your breath during a halter class. 238 | A r A bi A n Hor se T i mes
* Grill ribs about 2-minutes per side, until cooked most of the way through. Remove from grill. Add prawns (alternate prawns with beef ) with yellow pepper and tomato on skewer. Season for your own taste buds. Place back on grill for another 1-2 minutes per side. Squeeze the juice from ½ of a fresh orange over the Kebab about thirty seconds before removing from the grill. It adds a wonderful flavor.
Remember to pace yourself at the barn parties, drink lots of fluids, have a deliberate plan of attack and stick to it. History shows us that more than one partygoer in the past woke up the next day a proud owner of a new horse. Reality can set in rather quickly in those situations. There are 20+ food vendors at WestWorld during the show. They offer many options for dining while on the grounds. Sweet-Things outside of the Wendell arena is always a staple. You can also find vendors for yogurt, salmon, stir-fry, BBQ, Italian, Mexican and vegetarian among others (just trying to be PC with the vegetarian mention). I’ve been fortunate to attend the Scottsdale show since 1971. As a competitor, vendor, staff member and judge, I enjoyed each and every one. The board members and staff of the Arizona Arabian Horse Association work very hard to make this the event that it is. Jay, Janice, Sharon, Michael and Taryl, along with a long list of others, make the Scottsdale show unique. I hope you enjoy the show, the barn parties, the food and the fun. n

Back when the Promoting Positive Change Facebook Group started, the Arabian Horse Times asked me to write some articles for the magazine. I asked people in the group, if anyone wanted to be part of this. Maybe telling their story, or giving an outline of what projects they are working on. During this time, I connected with two women who have a similar story. Amy Johnson and Jennifer Pavlick are both military spouses. They have a common bond that has kept them sane, during a very difficult time in their lives—the Arabian horse. Here are their stories—they and their spouses are our heroes in a time when we really need some …
Amy’s Story— I can’t imagine my life without my horses, and it’s been that way since 1976, when my mom brought home a very skinny 3-year-old, 3/4 Arabian mare named Tonda Taussah. That is when my life-long journey with Arabian horses began. Through my teen years, my college years, and into adulthood, I could always count on my horses to be my confidante, closest companion, athletic partner, competitive partner, and best friend. Little did I know how much more important a role my horses would play when I married my husband Matt in 1998, who was a young Air Force officer at the time.
everywhere with us.” At the time, my horse was not living with me; she was 6 hours away at my parents house. Matt had never been exposed to the long hours at the barn, long days and weeks at horse shows, heartache of lameness, illness, and even death, let alone the financial outlay. Let’s just say fourteen-plus years later, he’s seen it all!
I’m not sure Matt knew what he was promising to me when I told him I’d marry him and, “move wherever the Air Force sends us, but my horse would have to move
The military lifestyle is a challenging one. There aren’t a lot of constants except constant change; new houses that the furniture doesn’t fit in, new doctors, dentists,
240 | A r A BI A n Hor se T I Mes
mechanics, grocers and schools; new habits, new cities to navigate, different climates, loss of favorite activities, etc. As we near Matt’s military retirement in the next 18 months or so, I have grown more reflective on what we’ve done, where we’ve been, and more importantly, how much my horses have made this lifestyle so much more tolerable. This came to light more than ever in the past year, when Matt deployed to Iraq. It happened at the best time of year, horse show season! I assured the person who gave us our predeployment briefing that I would not be staying home bored, sad, or lonely in large part thanks to my horse activities. Horse show season for any of us means camaraderie, joy, heartache, hours of practice time, fitness time, tack cleaning, vet and farrier appointments. I was making bi-weekly trips from Los Angeles to Stachowski Farm’s California facility near San Diego, where my horse was being trained and cared for by Jon Ramsay and his capable crew. The trip was 100 miles each way, and with Los Angeles traffic, it wasn’t often a quick 100 miles. Every Tuesday and Saturday, I’d throw our 5-year-old daughter, Sierra, in the car and we’d make the journey to the barn. I cherished every minute of barn time, and would typically stay the entire day so I could spend as much time with my horse, Carangi (Versace x Giavanna) as possible. Carangi, who is affectionately known as “Chachee,” is by far the most vocal and affectionate horse I’ve ever owned. He likes other horses, but he LOVES people! I had some hard days and hard weeks dealing with being a “single parent” or dealing with broken cars, leaky faucets, and sometimes just loneliness during the deployment. My day was always made better by spending it with Chachee. I loved getting him ready myself and did so as often as I could. And the time I spent with my fellow horse owners at the farm, and of course with Volume 43, No. 8 | 241
my trainer, Jon, was invaluable. I can’t say enough about how much my entire barn “family” meant to me during the deployment. They were supportive, and helped with my daughter (including when I was taking a lesson and she fell flat on her face and had a rather bloody nose and mouth!) They always rallied to help me whenever they could. This was especially true at shows, where I had to sometimes scramble to find someone to hang out with her while I was practicing and showing. I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a huge “THANK YOU” to my dear friend, Marlene Leichtfuss, who helped me more than anyone! Chachee and the shows made the deployment go so much faster. I had something to focus on, work towards, and look forward to. This always has been true with showing, but never more so than during the deployment. And really, it has been the case since I began this journey as a military spouse. With every move, I make new friends
Jen’s Story— Being in the Arabian industry for over 30 years, the horses have honestly been bred into me. As an only child, it was difficult for me to relate to other kids, on many levels. Mostly it had to do with my lifestyle. Summer vacations were horse shows, spring break consisted of helping foal out mares, your weekends and after school activities were working in the barn. The only people who could appreciate you were those who lived the same life as you. Most of those were spread across the country. Quickly you learned the horses were who you turned to most. As I got older, my appreciation of animals and my hard work ethic grew, finding that it comes into play all throughout your life. I’ve been married to my husband Steve for 6 years. He has been an Army National Guard for over 20 years, with 3 deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Because of Steve’s career, I end up spending a lot of time alone 242 | A R A BI A N HOR SE T I MES
because of my horse. I have instant activities to look forward to in a new area because of my horse. And as heartbreaking as each move can be, I also have friends from all over the country that I can look forward to seeing at shows at least once a year. This year, thanks to the “Promoting Positive Change” group on Facebook, which I became active in to help with the efforts of adding AATR classes to U.S. Nationals, I have made some amazing new friends. Turns out, two of them are military spouses who have dealt with multiple deployments and I know their stories of how the horses enriched their lives are mirrors of mine. Jennifer Pavlick and Samantha Hilliard, I salute you! And thank you, Chachee, and the entire Arabian horse community, for making deployments and life as a military spouse a lot more wonderful!
learning new survival skills. I always try to stay positive, holding down the home front while he helps hold down our country. In the past, I’d always been able to escape anything by spending time in the barn. The horses, over the course of my life, were my saviors. Now, more than ever, they help me find strength and courage. The support you receive from people during a deployment is wonderful, however it’s very difficult to explain what you are going through to others, unless they are living it themselves. Some days you feel like you are all alone. My animals always seem to understand and help sort out the answers. I can say that there are many trips to the family farm, to sit in a stall or take a ride, during the difficult days. This always seems to help me fill the emptiness while I wait, sometimes for days or weeks, without hearing from Steve. I always understood that upon a soldier’s return there would be an adjustment and family would face many challenges. One thing that horses teach us, is patience and unconditional love. You can’t push a horse that is not mentally ready, and you have to let it find its trust in you while they find their own ground and self-balance. The same goes with a returning soldier. So many of our military return with a lack of knowing who they are. Just like horses going through traumatic experiences, our soldiers go through all of that as well. The extremes of this are called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dealing with many horses in my lifetime that may have needed a little extra attention, has made me sensitive to
humans who may have a back story. Many of you have seen this in your horses—the look in their eyes when feeling distrustful of something, the glimmer of wanting a chance to prove themselves to you without knowing how. Extra love and patience are what is needed in times like this, with both human and equine partners. I am glad I had the training that my horses taught me to learn how to be the supportive partner that my husband has needed since his return from his deployments. Show season becomes my home during Steve’s time away. It is an escape, a comfort zone. I stay focused on Volume 43, No. 8 | 243
my horses and the people that have common goals and dreams. This keeps me busy during times that could get very anxious. There were many times at a show that I knew Steve was going to be calling me on his wake up, or turn down. I HAD to take that call because I never knew when I would hear from him again! I would hope that I wouldn’t be in a class, or warming up when it would come in. Skype conversations became one of the highlights of our separated time. All of my horse show friends would surround the computer screen, and things would get very animated! Steve got to hear many “thank you for your service” comments and got to see that I was surrounded by others who were taking care of me—human and equine, in his absence. Looking back, I think Steve appreciated all of this, even though I am sure he was thinking, “Who are these crazy horse people that my wife hangs around with”! Not only did it help him, I am sure my Arabian horse family appreciated seeing what his living environment was like and what deployment communication consists of for a military couple! Since becoming a huge part of the Promoting Positive Change page, many old acquaintances have been and I was in my gelding’s stall. Sensation, or as I like rekindled, and many new friends have been made. While to call him—“my boyfriend”, is my rock. He has seen working on the AATR project with some women, I me though more ups and met a new life long downs than any human. friend, Amy Johnson. Steve, knowing this, Amy is a military “I have two heroes in my life, one walked up to Sensation, spouse, or as I like that protects our country and one laid his hand on his neck, to say, a Home Front and said, “Now buddy, Hero. As I mentioned that protects my heart. I could you take good care of above, you feel like you are the only one her while I’m gone, don’t not have gotten through these who is, or has gone ever let anything happen past years without the love of my through a deployment, to her.” He knew that so when Amy and I my “boyfriend” would be Arabian horse and their people. started sharing stories, there when he couldn’t. God Bless the USA.” it was nice to know When I relive this Jennifer Pavlick that someone “gets memory, I get tears in it”. Of course, our my eyes. I am so blessed chats usually end in to have an incredible horse talk and laughs, support group—my family, my horses, and my wonderful sometimes for hours on end! extended horse community. I have two heroes in my life, one that protects our country and one that protects my Much of Steve’s deployment has been a blur, but one heart. I could not have gotten through these past years memory stands out, among all others. One day, before without the love of my Arabian horse and their people. one of Steve’s deployments, we were at the family farm God Bless the USA. n 244 | A R A BI A N HOR Se T I MeS

A Leg Up Check Mares In The Fall For Breeding Soundness by Heather Smith Thomas If you plan to breed a mare next spring, she should have a thorough breeding soundness exam in the fall. Walter R. Threlfall D.V.M., M.S., Ph.D, a reproductive specialist at Ohio State University, says that the history of the mare is just as important as the physical exam in determining whether she may have a problem that needs to be addressed before the next breeding season. It helps to know if the mare just retired from an athletic career (with possible athletic injuries, or drug therapy such as anabolic steroids that might hinder reproductive performance). Past breeding and reproductive records are helpful as well—her heat cycle patterns, length of anestrus and transitional heats when coming out of anestrus, number of previous foals, how recently she had her last foal, gestation length, whether births have been normal or difficult, any foaling complications, retained placenta, and so on. An accurate history can disclose factors that might directly or indirectly have an influence on her future reproductive abilities. “Sometimes owners don’t realize how valuable these records are,” Threlfall explains. “If they say their mare hasn’t conceived and give me no other information, then I must go through the whole route of looking for the problem. If they can elaborate and tell me she hasn’t had a heat for eight months, I don’t have to spend time looking at all the other things; I can focus on a hormonal problem—like a possible granulosa cell tumor in the ovary. The more history I get, the less money the owner will have to spend.” A thorough history helps the veterinarian see where to focus with diagnostic tests, rather than doing all of the tests on every mare. Records (or evidence) of previous reproductive surgery such as Caslick’s repair or correction of abnormal perineal conformation can indicate there was a need to correct a problem that might compromise conception or pregnancy.

Information about any prior uterine infection and previous treatment can also be important. Earlier data will be helpful when compared with the results of subsequent examinations to determine whether the mare’s condition has improved, remained the same, or worsened. Evidence of early embryonic death or early pregnancy loss during previous pregnancies (the mare checked in foal early on and later open) is also important.
“Records (or evidence) of previous reproductive surgery such as Caslick’s repair or correction of abnormal perineal conformation can indicate there was a need to correct a problem that might compromise conception or pregnancy. Information about any prior uterine infection and previous treatment can also be important.” Accurate records can help determine the cause for loss of pregnancy when combined with examination of the mare’s reproductive tract and diagnostic laboratory findings. Good records, in conjunction with various aspects of the examination, will give the veterinarian a picture of what is going on and how much time might be needed to correct it.
A Leg Up “We like to do breeding soundness exams in the fall to give us more time to get a problem corrected,” says Threlfall. “We know the longer that inflammation is in the uterus, the more likely we’ll have scar tissue present. If she was bred this breeding season and didn’t conceive, and we see her in the fall, we can do all the workups and find out what’s wrong. We can treat her now. It is always a good idea to get a mare ready for early breeding.” This gives you more time early in the breeding season to finish correcting any problem that might otherwise interfere with pregnancy. “By doing all this, you are preparing for the next breeding season, instead of going into it with a mare that’s not fertile and you don’t know what’s wrong,” Threlfall says. “You might breed her three times and by the time you find out what’s wrong, it may be too late to breed her this year. [By checking mares in the fall], you can get these things done and have them ready to go for next year.” n
