WELCOME TO 2ND ANNUAL ARABIAN US OPEN It is exciting to be back in Central Park for the Arabian US Open. We welcome everyone from around the world to experience this gala event in such an incredible atmosphere in the most visited park in the world. New York City has so much to offer the visitor, yet we are able to introduce a whole new experience by showcasing the Arabian horse. Tonight you will see the most beautiful horses presented under saddle and in hand. The performance classes include Native Costume, Western Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure and Country English Pleasure. Except for Costume, the classes will be Pro/Am. This means that the professional trainers will ride the horses the first way of the ring and the amateurs will ride the second way of the ring. Arabians are known for their wonderful dispositions so are the perfect ride for an amateur of any age. In Native Costume, the “Native” part comes from the “Costume” that came from the desert of having the rider and horse covered to be protected from the elements and during battle. Over the years, the costumes have evolved to be very eye catching. The horses simulate a horse that could be ridden into battle, strong and bold. Western Pleasure presents a horse that is quiet, mannerly and so comfortable that they could easily be ridden every day, all day out on the range. All riders must have the standard apparel of a western style shirt, Western hat, belt and boots plus chaps. The ornamentation of the outfits is up to the rider. The horses are shown in a western bridle and saddle. Hunter Pleasure is much more traditional with the standard hunter saddle and bridle with much more conservative apparel for the riders. These horses are designed to “Ride to the Hounds” so must be mannerly, efficient in their ground covering strides and able to transition from one gait to another effortlessly. County English Pleasure horses resemble the horses that were ridden in the English parks in days past. Again they must be mannerly while demonstrating a higher head set and motion than the western and hunter horses. The riders wear a saddle suit (long coat and pants with short boots) and a saddle that is designed to allow for great freedom of movement for the horse. The In-Hand classes present the horses is a way that allows them to demonstrate their animation and playfulness. They are judged on Arabian type, conformation and motion. Please enjoy their incredible beauty and athleticism. All of these horses love the attention of the crowd and love for you to show your support by cheering for your favorite. A huge thank you to Sheikh Jassim Bin Khalifa Al Thani of ALJASSIMYA FARM, Qatar, for his sponsorship to make this event possible. Best Regards,

Cynthia M Richardson AHA President

“I believe this show is worth it because it really is an experience unlike any other. Not many people can say they have shown their horse in Central Park. It’s an amazing sight with the beautiful New York City buildings as the background to the show ring. It’s also a great way to expose the Arabian breed to a new audience.” —Jim Stachowski

Halter is a type of horse show class where horses are shown “in hand,” meaning that they are led, not ridden, and are judged on their conformation and suitability as breeding stock. They

H A L T E R

should be presented with front feet square and the back feet parted so that one leg is set perpendicular to the ground, and the other slightly behind it, in order to tighten and flatten the relatively horizontal croup and show off the high-set tail. The head should be carried high and the neck stretched out. The horses are presented to the judge in hand at a walk and trot and are judged on the following criteria; Arabian Type, Conformation, Suitability as a breeding animal, Quality, Movement, Substance, Manners, and Presence.

APPOINTMENTS Arabian halter horses are shown wearing a light halter or headstall. Arabian show halters are made of very delicate, thin leather and may be decorated with silver, crystal or beads. The light design of the halter is meant to accentuate the distinctive shape of the Arabian’s head. Exhibitors generally wear traditional business suits.

“The Arabian horse is glorious in any setting, but to see these magnificent horses against the backdrop of the New York skyline makes you question if what you are seeing is a dream or if it’s real! I attended the inaugural show last year and was in awe at the spectacle. This is an amazing and fitting stage to showcase the grandeur of the Arabian horse and a powerful opportunity for us to expose this beautiful breed to new enthusiasts. We plan to make this show a cornerstone of our program for many years to come. My hat is off to all of the show organizers, supporters and participants.” —Jeff Sloan

Hunt seat is a style of forward seat riding. Hunter Pleasure horses, as with other pleasure classes, give the appearance of being a pleasure to ride while displaying a pleasant, relaxed attitude. They are ridden in informal, hunter style attire at a walk, trot, canter, and gallop. The stride is regular, unconstrained and with good reach. Hunter Pleasure horses are judged on manners, performance, suitability as a hunter, quality and conformation.

“We are very proud to be participating in this spectacular event in a world class venue so beautifully suited to the Arabian horse. Two Hennessey-bred horses will compete in the Pro/Am Performance division and we look forward to sharing this experience in the “city that never sleeps” with fellow horse enthusiasts from all over the world. We wish to express our deepest appreciation to Aljassimya Farm for making this incredible opportunity a reality.” —Frank Hennessey

HAWK HAVEN FARMS is honored to be once again invited to participate in the 2nd U.S Arabian Open in Central Park. HL Sanction will be returning to this ring at the age of 27 to represent the beautiful Arabian and defend his Gold Championship in 2015. At the age of 18, not happy with retirement, Sanction began his second show career in costume. He was too vibrant and healthy to stay home, even though his legs could no longer trot high enough to do the English classes he loved so much. As a 7-time National Champion costume horse, he has found his niche. With his heart pounding and nostrils flaring, he bursts into the ring with the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old (much to the trepidation of his rider)! So here we go … Sanction will give all his mighty heart and soul can give, and I will be in the saddle with tears in my eyes as always, as I appreciate the majesty of this horse, the beauty of the setting, and the chance to share it all with the Arabian horse community who mean the world to me. Good luck to all U.S. Open exhibitors! LET’S GIVE THE WORLD A SHOW TO REMEMBER!

Western Pleasure horses are evaluated on manners and suitability of the horse for a relaxed but collected gait. They are required to exhibit a slow speed and must have a calm and responsive disposition. The Western horse should appear to be a “pleasure” to ride and very comfortable for the exhibitor. Western classes are designed to model the work and activities of the cowboy out on the trail. First time Arabian horse owners are often pleasantly surprised to find that Arabian horses have the conformation and the temperament that make them truly a ‘pleasure’ to ride.

“Mid afternoon of the day we showed at the 2015 Central Park show, we had a “walk through” with the officials of the show. At that point I realized that this venue would be the most special I have ever showed a horse in. Of course, it would be exciting for me as a handler, but for the audience, it would be even better. The ambiance of that setting was unlike anything I had experienced with a horse. I will always remember the inaugural Central Park show. I’m excited to attend the show again this year and in the years to come!” —Andy Sellman

The Country English Pleasure horse competes under a saddle seat style and carries himself in an uphill manner with a high degree of collection and elevation throughout the walk, trot and the canter. The horse is meant to give the appearance of being a pleasure to ride while displaying a comfortable attitude. They should perform with fluid power and balance, and should move to the bridle with grace and poise, all with subtle cues from the rider. These horses have a quiet, responsive mouth and move with willingness, obvious ease, cadence, balance and smoothness. Country English Pleasure horses are judged on
