U.S. Nationals—Arabian Pride! In the North American Arabian horse industry, we are lucky to begin the show season at Scottsdale and end it at the U.S. Nationals. If we’re travelers, we can add on the Brazilian Nationals and the Salon du Cheval in November and December, but most of us typically put our horses away as we get ready for Thanksgiving. Then we start up again in the middle of winter and we set our sights on those far-off Tulsa trophies. One reason I say we’re lucky is that the U.S. Nationals plays a broader role than just being a place to earn glitzy titles. All season, even as we enjoy our practice at the barn and our horse shows with our friends, we know how challenging the horse business can be in today’s leisure market. Just as in February at Scottsdale we are renewed by the quality, beauty and talent of the Arabian horse, so we are reminded in October of how really great our horses are. We get to see the best—and there are plenty of them out there! This year, as usual in most of the classes, the horses, the training and the presentation were just amazing. I didn’t see a single division this year that didn’t have standout competition. Just watching it all is a great Christmas present to ourselves. As great as it was, I have to admit that if I could have one wish for our show, it would be that we could return to having more finals for the breed on Friday and Saturday nights. That showcased our breed so well to anyone who wanted to see why the Arabian horse is so special. That said, it was a still a great show—a ‘must’ engagement for anyone able to attend. I want to wish you all a warm and loving holiday season and a very Happy New Year. I can hardly wait for 2017, because if this year’s U.S. Nationals is anything to go by, we have a big year coming up. We have so much to be proud of !

Thank yyou Thank ou ...
I’d like to express my appreciation to the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund for all that it has done for professional horsemen in need. The Town and Country Showdown, held at U.S. Nationals this year, was amazing—not only a successful fundraiser, but fun for everyone there. I’d also like to thank the generous donors that made specific contributions on my behalf to aid in my recovery. Really, words will never adequately convey how much that support has meant to me. It has been overwhelming, and I will be forever grateful to my family of Arabian horsemen. — Mike

COVER STORY:
MORE THAN A CHAMPION by Theresa Cardamone
Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi beamed with joy as he led his newly crowned United States National Champion Stallion Marajj on a victory pass. Having owned, believed in, and promoted Marajj ever since he was a yearling, Sheikh Mohammed took extreme pleasure in his triumphant return to competition among some of the finest horses on the planet. It was the culmination of a remarkable 28 hours that had already seen his two other entries win their own National Champion honors to set the stage for this Trifecta of titles for Albidayer Stud. It was a meant-to-be moment, made even more miraculous by the wonderful twist of fate that released the Sheikh from a prior commitment that would have prevented him from sharing in one of the most amazing days in Albidayer history. Foaled in 2004, Marajj had already more than made his mark as both a show horse and a sire. He won prestigious international honors on three continents including his victory as 2007 World Champion Junior Stallion in Paris before retiring to the breeding shed. Marajj has consistently produced phenomenal offspring including D Shahla, the 2015 Gold World Champion Junior Mare, Maharaja HDM, the 2009 Silver World Champion Stallion, and 2015 Austrian National Champion Stallion, Marjan Albidayer. Manager Dawn Martin has worked with many of Marajj’s ancestors over the years, making him especially dear to her. “The first time I saw Marajj, when he arrived in Sharjah as a yearling, he reminded me so much of his grandsire Gazal Al Shaqab,” she related. “Gazal had a special bounce when he walked that you could recognize from a mile away. Marajj had this same bounce and way of carrying himself. Like a giraffe!” Dawn had been the first one to condition and train Gazal, beginning when he was still being carried by his famous dam, Kajora, and had done the same with his own son Marwan Al Shaqab, Marajj’s spectacular sire. There have been fifty U.S. National Champion Stallions, but there is only one Marajj. “He likes cats,” Dawn revealed. “He had a cat in Sharjah. She would sleep in his stall, sometimes
on the floor, and rub on his legs while he nuzzled her. She would lie on the window sill and they would watch the show jumpers working in the arena. Usually she would walk out of his stall full of slobber where he had been licking her!” As a youngster, Marajj was known to rear in joyful exuberance, a habit that the Albidayer team discouraged. Clearly, he enjoyed every minute of his return to the show ring at the Nationals with Michael Byatt on the lead! “In the Stallion Championship, as he trotted into the ring, he just couldn’t control himself,” she said. “Right in the middle, with all eyes upon him, he gave a rear! Then he went on with his business and gave an almost flawless show! At 12 years of age, he was in amazing shape and perfectly happy to give his ‘all’ to Michael.” The next thing that Dawn shared defined one of Marajj’s strongest traits, his incredible, loving nature. “The minute he left the ring with the blanket of roses on his back, surrounded by a crowd of excited people, a little girl came up and asked Michael if she could pet him,” Dawn stated. “Michael did one better because he trusted Marajj completely. He picked her up and set her on Marajj’s back!” As further evidence that Marajj is no ordinary stallion, he was trained to ride at 10 years of age by a trick rider who taught him how to go without a bit or reins and to bow and lay down on command. “He was really proud of Marajj and what an amazing, smart horse he was,” Dawn recalled. “At our open house in Sharjah, he came in riding Marajj with a plain leather cavesson. He unhooked the reins and did figure 8’s with him at the canter. They came to the center of the arena and Marajj bowed to the crowd, then spun around and bowed in the other direction. The people were so surprised!” Marajj is more than the 2016 United States National Champion Stallion. He is more than his pedigree, more than his progeny. He is more than a silhouette, more than a breeding fee. He embodies the spirit and beauty of the Arabian horse in ways that mean even more than his show record. He is Marajj. n

The Third IntArah Dream Embryo Auction by Theresa Cardamone
W
hen you think of fabulous Las Vegas, it is the vast array of neon-lit casinos that first comes to mind. It is the temptation to challenge Lady Luck in any one of many games of chance, always with the hope that you will come out a winner. In 2017, the Arabian horse community will be able to gamble on something very close to their hearts ‌ the unborn foals of some of the most famous horses of our time. There in the Nevada desert, the third IntArah Dream Embryo auction will give all Arabian horse breeders the rare opportunity to experience the exhilaration of acquiring direct offspring of World and National Champions and other remarkable horses that would ordinarily be unavailable to them. The elegant setting of a Las Vegas showroom adds a level of excitement to the affair reminiscent of the grand Scottsdale auctions of the 1980’s. With big screens showing enticing images of the storied sires and dams, potential bidders can begin to imagine the happy results. In 2015, the well-dressed and enthusiastic winners spent $1,450,000 on 18 unborn foals and 6 embryo rights, for a $60,400 average. Considering that the cumulative value of the stallions and mares represented was likely more than 20 times that, the winning bidders stood a better than average chance of a good return on their investment. High price was $200,000 paid by Dan and Maureen Grossman and their partners for the right to an embryo from the elegant, black U.S. National Champion Mare, RH Triana, whose current value is definitely in the seven figures.
Ar abian Horse Times | 36 | Volume 47, No. 6
Several breeders have purchased embryos in each of the prior two IntArah Dream Embryo auctions, the first held in Brazil in 2011, and the second in Las Vegas in 2015. The motivation of the IntArah Group is to open the market for elite breeding services to a more diverse group of breeders. It gives everyone the chance to improve their programs by buying breeding rights to or embryos of priceless stallions and mares. There is risk in buying the foals before birth, but otherwise most people would not be able to own the offspring of such great horses. That’s the exhilarating part of the auction, the hope for great success after making an educated choice. Sometimes, that has led to amazing returns on that investment. Regan and Renae Rohl, have a small, “boutique” breeding program in Fargo, N.D. “The IntArah auction has given us bloodlines that we otherwise would not have had which will be a big part of our future,” said Regan Rohl. “We gambled on the results, and got really lucky. We ended up with two, gorgeous, rangy, dark bay fillies that we are keeping for our breeding program. Miracle RAR is a virtual clone of her mother, double U.S. National Champion RD Marciena and is sired by World Champion Hariry Al Shaqab. We bought that embryo for $65,000, and she is absolutely outstanding. In fact, we have already turned down an offer of $250,000 for her. The other embryo, which we bought at that sale for $35,000, turned out to be another beautiful bay, Julianna RAR (OFW Magic Wan x Amora B). So, for $100,000, we were able to get two of our next generation mares with world class bloodlines that are different than we’ve had before, at a price point that couldn’t be gotten anywhere else.”
Opportunities such as those offered at IntArah sales are a great thing for the industry. In many ways, the auctions strive to level the playing field by allowing more breeders access to the best horses. They are designed for the true breeders; the ones that make this industry thrive. The breeders who consign to the IntArah auction are offering others a potential for future greatness that has taken them a lifetime to achieve. Larry Jerome is a strong supporter of IntArah and its inclusivity. “I found the IntArah auction to be a very exciting event,” he said. “The caliber of the genetics offered was of an elite quality and provided an opportunity for breeders to acquire something special to add to their programs. We have participated as buyers in previous auctions and have been thrilled with the results. The auction brought together great breeders and great horses, and provided an opportunity to dream a little bigger!” That is what makes the IntArah auctions so rich, the rareness of the opportunity. IntArah has received enormous support from the Arabian community, to such a degree that they have plans to expand in the near future. The IntArah Group wants to thank all of those who have supported the first two sales to make them such a huge success. They plan to make sale number three the greatest yet! n

Leaders Of The Times:
ROL Divine Style
by Mary Kirkman
At the 2015 Canadian Nationals, ROL Divine Style won the English Pleasure Championship unanimously, and his owners, Nancy De Lisi and Carol Sandusky, of Delsan Arabians, rushed back to the stalls to reward him with one of his favorite treats. “Buddy, I am so proud of you!” De Lisi greeted him. “Ready for your carrots?” Surprise: Duke, as he is called (more on that later), just blinked at her. “Apples?” He loved apples. Still, just that steady gaze. Then he stuck out his tongue. Ah … just a few days earlier, someone had suggested they try a fancier treat. He wanted applesauce. Okay, champ, you get applesauce, and in seconds, his long, agile tongue was cleaning up the container. If horses can smile, Duke was smiling. There is nothing wrong with the name ROL Divine Style, Nancy De Lisi notes. He is divine, and he has a lot of style. And it conveys the savvy breeding reputation of R O Lervick Arabians, where he began life. But
he’s a tall, handsome (pretty, actually) Arabian stallion, and Nancy and Carol figured that day to day, he needed a name with a little more macho presence. Enter John Wayne, known to his friends as Duke. There are so many good stories about Duke that you don’t know where to start. In addition to being scary-talented, he’s well-bred (Afire Bey V x IXL Miss Firefly, by MHR Nobility) and he has such a great personality that he is everyone’s best pal. His purpose is not just to win titles and sire talented get, but also, by De Lisi and Sandusky’s design, to provide an opportunity for a young trainer (Leah Beth Golladay) to polish her up-and-coming reputation. And the best yet is that even after unanimous two national championships and three reserves, his team says he hasn’t reached his peak. Now De Lisi and Sandusky divide their time between anticipating the 2017 round of competition and next spring’s foals. They’re looking forward to his third crop; the first two have signaled all systems go.

Back-to-back Canadian National English Pleasure Champion
ROL DIVINE STYLE (Afire Bey V x IXL Miss Firefly, by MHR Nobility) with Leah Beth Golladay.
“At the Nationals this year, we felt like he gave his best performance to date,” says Golladay of her star. In Tulsa, the pair earned the U.S. National Reserve Championship in English Pleasure. “He tries really hard—he wants to please, he wants to show. He’s so eager to learn; anything you ask of him, he does. He’s gotten stronger and better, and I think he’s going to continue to do that.” Gene LaCroix, who has consulted on the stallion’s training throughout his career, nods. “He had a great show at Nationals 2016. Leah Beth is a great rider and trainer, and she and Duke bond really well. I think we have another 10 or 15 percent more horse, so we’re looking forward to getting that in this next year.” Working with Golladay, LaCroix occasionally gets on Duke. He agrees with her evaluation, and adds a stellar personal opinion as well. “For me, it was like riding the old *Bask kind of horse,” he says. “It’s the same kind of mind, really soft neck, strong behind, and he’s very willing. He’s a fun horse just to go in the stall with and be around.” Everyone has endorsed Duke’s long term training program. There has been no pushing; at 3 and 4, he showed only a few times, and then missed his 5-year-old season when Golladay was pregnant. That worked out well, says LaCroix, because it gave the young stallion time to grow into himself for open competition. “We’re moving him up to a certain level and having him maintain that level,” he explains, “and then going to the next level when he’s strong enough and mentally ready for it.” They began to work seriously on his strong trot only a few months before this year’s U.S. Nationals. “The eventual goal will manifest itself with a performance that demonstrates a very elevated, but poised, normal trot,” LaCroix says, “and then move into a strong trot with balance and cadence and lengthened stride, putting the crowd on its feet. It’s a lofty goal, but I think he can do it … and so can Leah Beth.” “It all takes time, and as owners, we have to appreciate that,” observes De Lisi. “I’m about the development of the horse and the trainer, and the fact that Duke’s producing babies that are going to be like him. He
has a natural balance, so to speak, and he has been able to ‘print’ his conformation. And he also seems to be printing his temperament. He’s a smart horse and he has a great mind.” De Lisi and Sandusky own two of the stallion’s foals, Dukes Girl DA and Diamondz R Divine DA, and they like what they see. The feedback from other breeders has been positive as well; Denny Wigren, at R O Lervick, is impressed with a yearling filly from the stallion named ROL How Divine. “She’s long-necked, very upright, long-legged—has tons of quality,” he says. “Although she’s nominated to the futurities and we’ve bred a lot of halter champions, our first priority here is performance horses, and as an English pleasure mare, I don’t think you’ll find one with more look or style than this filly. She has an outstanding form for being a yearling. And she’s a lot like her dad. She has the same willingness and attitude; you can pretty much do anything with her.” It’s all there: the ability, the game enthusiasm, the conformation to back it all up, and a pedigree that has demonstrated that it breeds on. And, for involved owners who like spending time with their horses, the pleasing demeanor of a best friend. “One thing we’re learning on the ‘Duke Train’—that’s what we’re calling it—is that there is something special about this guy,” De Lisi reflects. “One of the grooms at Golladays’ said that in the entire time he’d worked with him, there wasn’t a horse who resonated with him like Duke did. And Gene LaCroix said the same thing; he hasn’t worked with a horse quite like this in a very, very long time. “We’re just delighted with him,” she adds. “Our goals and objectives are being met at Golladays’. Duke is a happy horse.” De Lisi stops to consider this year’s U.S. National English Pleasure Championship, where they were reserve to the talented mare Heirs Noble Love. “The only mistake I think we’ve made with him is that we had him trained to be a gentleman, and he takes that stuff pretty seriously,” she says dryly. “Ladies go first.” But maybe, she implies, not forever. n

Number of years in the Arabian horse industry: I joined AHA in 1979. Should have bought the lifetime membership! What attracted you to the Arabian horse? I immediately fell in love with their kind, gentle eyes, intelligence and willingness to bond with people. Even a young girl of 13. Who is the most instrumental in getting you involved in Arabian horses? I am in the Arabian horse world because of my local 4-H club who took us all on a day trip to a local Arabian training
facility and I fell in love with a mare and foal there. After that day, my father always encouraged me to pursue my love of Arabians. That mare was my first Arabian. Who was your first trainer or instructor? My first riding teacher was a local teenager who was also in 4-H, but she won everything! She kindly took pity on me and how bad I was and volunteered to come help me. My first Arabian trainer was Sandy Young and we are friends to this day. Cathy with husband Russ.
Who is your favorite horse to date and why? I don’t like to name my own horses for these answers, so for

me, my favorite is American Beauty, a quintessential country horse with the heart and soul to show her whole life and still with both ears forward! What is your sense of style in the show ring? I like to be somewhat conservative in darker suits, but then I like to give the look something memorable or unexpected. I take my presentation very seriously, because I am such a perfectionist about my appearance in the ring and my ride. The more I like the look, the better I feel, the better I ride. What is your favorite activity away from the barn? Since I am rarely not in the barn, at some point on any given day it is hard to say. In the spring and summer. I absolutely love to spend time with my flowers around the property. I spend hours with them and am convinced they grow better if they hear classical music.

What is the perfect date night? Driving into Manhattan to do cocktails, dinner and a show. What is your favorite time of the year? Springtime, around Easter. I love the freshness in the air. What is your favorite store to shop at? Um, other than Show Season? I rarely take the time for a shopping day, so I like to go to Nordstrom’s and accomplish a lot in one trip. What is your favorite city in the world? New York, no question! What is one thing you never travel without? Books! I dislike reading on my iPad. What would someone be shocked to know about you? That I actually can play both the piano and the flute, but I am unable to play if I know anyone can hear me. I have an anxiety meltdown.

What stamp do you hope to leave on the Arabian horse community? I would love to make people aware of the usefulness and blessings of older horses who have so many contributions to make to our lives. I would also hope that my time in this industry would leave a stamp of compassion and integrity towards both the horses and people who make up our amazing world that people will remember long after I am gone. n

ot content with commanding a world class breeding enterprise, Sheikh Jassim Bin Khalifa Al Thani has been delivering some innovative ideas to encourage a new generation of Arabian fans. While the U.S. has an active AOTH community, Europe’s nascent Amateur scene needed a boost to get it off the starting blocks and the Aljassimya Amateur Challenge has supplied the power.
Ar abian Horse Times | 44 | Volume 47, No. 6
THE ALJASSIMYA AMATEUR CHALLENGE 2016
2015 was the first year the Challenge and Amateur halter handlers qualified at three shows in Belgium; with the top twenty point scorers each winning a ticket for them and a friend to attend the World Championships in Paris as guests of Aljassimya Farm. Travelling together by coach and staying in the same hotel, it was a great opportunity for camaraderie, and the excitement was trebled by the surprise announcement that on Sunday afternoon after the show there would be a California Prize Draw! Four numbers were drawn from the twenty ticket winners, and those lucky winners gained two tickets each to California to see the Arabians of the Santa Ynez Valley in summer 2016. The prizes offered by Aljasssimya Farm are not just exciting, but give people the opportunity to learn more about Arabian breeding in the most fun of circumstances, and make new friends along the way. The 2016 California tour, escorted by the indefatigable Michelle Kelly and Bart Van Buggenhout was an intense week of both horses and fun, with whale watching, shopping, good dining and, of course, the opportunity to visit with the many, many famous horses and breeders of the Valley of the Arabian horse. Aljassimya Farm, Om El Arab, Gallún and Silver Maple Farms and Varian Arabians were all on the itinerary for an Ivy Leaguelevel introduction to Arabian breeding! In 2016, seven shows joined up for the Challenge, three in Belgium, two in Holland and two in Germany. With a year’s head start, the Belgian shows were the most competitive and the European Amateur Cup held in Lille, Belgium, in April can claim to be the fastest growing show in Europe, going from 32 entries in 2015 to 132 in 2016. The judging system has made one important deviation from the usual 5 topic system (Type, Head and Neck, Body and Topline, Legs and Movement) by adding in two extra categories, also scored out of 20: Harmony of Horse and Handler, and Presentation Accuracy. These last two categories make it important for the handler to consider
their performance as well, and gives a big chance for improvement in placing at different shows with the same horse. This year, 21 amateur halter handlers, plus one friend will be coming to the Salon du Cheval, according to points accumulated. The runaway winner of the middle level Amateur and top level Experienced Amateur section was Koen Hennekens, son of Helen Hennekens, owner of Flaxman Arabians. As a multiple winner, Koen will no longer be able to take part as an Amateur next year, but already has his sights set on higher endeavors. He says, “I need to practice a bit more, but I really want to show more in the open classes. These shows prepared me a lot for the open classes, although there still is a big gap.” Another second generation breeder to take a place on the Paris bus is 17 year old Tjery Den Hartog from Kossack Stud in Holland. Winner of the Novice Section for the least experienced handler was Priscilla De la Ruelle, a groom for the last three years at Flaxman Arabians in Holland, who ‘borrowed’ her employers horse to compete, as did several grooms at big farms, who are welcome to compete, and is a great opportunity for big breeders to offer employees something more than just day to day repetitive tasks. Flaxman Arabians, Christine Jamar’s Jadem Arabians and Helene Zaleski’s Lutetia Arabians of France, all took this opportunity to reward their staff.

The shows also offers Trail In-Hand and Trail Ridden, plus three more Ridden classes, Western Pleasure, Classic Pleasure and Hunter Pleasure. Fifteen riders plus guests will also come to Paris. Winning three of these sections was Robina Romani, who will be joined by her younger sister Canisia in Paris this year. The sisters bought their first Arabian—a rescue case 4 years ago—and have not looked back. Neither sister has been to Paris before as Robina explains, “When I participated at the first show in Lille during the European Amateur Cup, I never thought I would be able to even have a small chance to win such a ticket. In the end, my younger sister and I both got tickets to go see the most beautiful Arabian horses of the World in Paris! Oh yes, we are both excited!” Not everyone has to own a horse to take part, a problem which Johanna Ullström has neatly sidestepped by starting a series of training sessions at her barn that pulls in new faces. She accompanied 25 aspiring new handlers to the show. She explains that, “Some have their own horses that they prepare and train themselves, with our support and guidance. Others, who don’t have a horse to show, or feel their horses are not yet ready for it, may borrow a horse from us. We try to give a chance to everyone who wants to show.” The Aljassimya Farm team look forward to meeting this new group of Arabian horse enthusiasts at the Salon du Cheval this winter! n

THE ALJASSIMYA AMATEUR CHALLENGE 2016
Lore Beckers with her mare Faryda I was only 13 years old when I first competed in the European Amateur Show in Lille. I was very nervous at the time, because I only handled my horse at home and I didn’t know what to expect. But the atmosphere at the show was so relaxed, people helping out each other, and yes, making me feel more relaxed. It made me feel like it was no competition, but just having fun with your horse. It was the perfect way to have a little taste of what is happening in the ring, and I loved it! And I think my mare did too. The trip to California was, in one word … AMAZING! As a 14 year old Arabian horse enthusiast, it was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ adventure, and I am really grateful to Aljassimya Farm and Sheik Jassim Bin Khalifa Al Thani to have this opportunity.
Monica Van Duyvenbode with her sister, Jolanda Van Dyvenbode, who won a Paris ticket in 2016 “I think it’s a great initiative! It gives amateurs a chance to show their own horse, and earn points with the ridden classes for classic, hunter and western. I’m glad they are bringing attention to the fact that the Arab is a versatile horse! My boyfriend Jannes and I have enjoyed every moment of the stunning guest freedom and fun of AJF and all of the other farms we visited, learning about their visions and breeding programs.
Michele Boelen
When I won the trip to California I was so happy. As we have only had Arabian horses since January 2012, being able to visit the Aljassimya Farm, as well as the other famous farms around the area was such a marvelous gift. What a dream it was to see all these wonderful horses and meet the great people working at these farms. We bought our first Arabian gelding in January 2012 and immediately fell in love with this breed. After taking start halter lessons at Johanna Ullström’s stables, and thanks to her great teaching skills, I was able to participate at some amateur shows and won my ticket to Paris in 2015. Since our story with Arabians horses started, we have met great people and had lots of enjoyable moments with these fabulous horses. And this will continue for us, as we are expecting our first foal in May 2016.
Liesbet D’Joos After going with Juan Murillo and Ilse Verbruggen to shows several times, I was hit by “Arabitis”! I love these Arabians for their character and their way of being a powerful and respectful, beautiful horse. I like to ride and work with them. The trip to California was a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity from Ajassimya Farm, something I will never forget. Everything we did was fantastic, visiting the farms where they were all so friendly and hospitable, leading us around their farms and meeting some wonderful horses. The dinners we had in the evening were also great, being together with the group and talking and laughing about we had done that day.

50th Arabian U.S. Nationals
THE 2016
Golden Magic Electrifying Every Show Event by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI
By all accounts, this year’s 50th U.S. Nationals, the ‘Granddaddy’ of all Arabian show competitions, truly “out-Granddaddied” itself! All three arenas were buzzing every day with the excitement of new events, new classes, unprecedented prize money and the warm camaraderie of friends meeting up with friends from all parts of the globe. When class sessions took breaks, the shopping areas were packed with customers seeking everything from a jeweled memento keepsake to getting fitted for a new pair of custom show boots and/ or attire. Business was brisk, energy was high, smiles and laughter were aplenty. Thanks to the Arabian Horse Global Network and modern technology, those who couldn’t witness this golden anniversary were able to view competitions and special events from home. Still, there’s nothing like actually drinking in the festive air of a great horse show. Some highlights of the 50th U.S. Nationals scene …

Hospitality
Whether a competitor or spectator, horse-owner or horse-lover, everyone carried around a proud, friendly sense of happiness on their faces. While in the stands watching classes, one observed many folks making acquaintances for the first time and then enjoying chit chat while watching the competition. Folks who’ve shown at Nationals for literally decades had engaging reunions. Local families, seniors and other curious on-lookers came to the Expo to take in our exquisitely beautiful Arabians—some who knew next to nothing about horses. All were curious with questions or some sought directions to a particular event. While walking around all three arenas, time and time again you saw these spectators being assisted, much of the time by ‘old pros’ and volunteers. Barn parties (many impromptu) added to the party atmosphere. A friendly, welcoming, reaching-out sort of hospitality was a warm contributor to our 50th U.S. It was simply lovely to witness and be part of it all.
Sportsmanship
The 50th felt like a debut of sorts, particularly with what seemed to be an upsurge of young trainers and new competitors. Many of the established show barns are adding young trainers to their employ and this was front and center in all arenas! It’s one thing to hire assistants and have them work the show behind the scenes, but it is quite another to trust them to show at the very
highest level against the competition. This year’s show saw young trainers reap top prizes across the board, and meet with cheers and whistles audience-wide as they made their victory passes. The future of our industry beckoned brightly with the new young talent being fully supported. Whether they came to the U.S. Nationals on their own or employed by a well-established show barn, their young blood was exciting! And a side note about Camaraderie … Walking by the warm up pens, watching classes by the rail, trainers were interacting with one another continuously. A whole lot of information, advice and story-telling was going on.
Our Industry’s Business
It’s impossible to measure how many sales took place at the U.S. Nationals, but by the talk, it’s safe to say there were many. Horses had new and numerous opportunities to be presented to prospective buyers via their performances in the show ring, and almost daily there were competitions featuring young horses in added money classes. A few examples of this: the Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes adding prize money to nearly all competition disciplines, plus their own exclusive jackpot classes; the Arabian Western Pleasure Association (AWPA) debuted their $100,000 Arabian and $50,000 Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Futurities; the Arabian English Pleasure Association (AEPA) continued to draw large, cheering crowds with the Arabian Horse Times $100,000 Arabian and

Halcon Furniture $50,000 Half-Arabian Futurities. The Amateur Maturity classes enjoyed jackpot classes as well. Mustang Arena debuted a Reining Derby both for Arabian and Half-Arabians, featuring horses aged 6 through 8 years of age. All of these moneyed events drew great audiences and interest. The future of our breed seemed to shine brighter with the live enthusiasm of an audience watching young horses exhibit their beauty and talent. All of this bodes well toward increased breedings and the addition of new folks to the Arabian horse breed.
Cross-Over
And overlap … from a spectator viewpoint, the ‘smaller arenas’ enjoyed a larger audience every day. Ford Arena is considered ‘the main event’, yet the working western Mustang Arena drew a large, hearty audience daily, too. Arabian Reining Horse Association President Judy Kibler verified that interest in the working western classes drew interest from all over the world. Everyone wanted to find out how they could ride a reiner! Later in the week, the Reined Cow Horse, Working Cow Horse, and Cutting classes drew good sized audiences as well. It was lovely to witness trainers who frequent other disciplines show up to compete and collect top prizes. Pavilion Arena enjoyed the same experience. Performance trainers taking a walk over to view in-hand classes and halter
trainers and competitors watching working western was a refreshing cross-over. You had to be there to witness some surprise spectators in the stands!
Giving Back
Arabian horse owners as a group are as giving as their four legged friends. The 50th anniversary of this great show had three major fundraisers, two of which raised ‘a leg up’ for the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund. Wednesday night’s fundraising ‘shenanigans’ involved ‘newbie’ Western Pleasure riders on seasoned (and infinitely patient) western pleasure mounts. The cheers, laughter and bidding nearly raised the roof! Friday night’s Wine Walk at the Ford Dealers Barn was a more sedate and intimate setting, a nice balance and great opportunity to meet up with friends before the evening classes. All the while, the Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) offered a four hundred ticket-only chance to win a deluxe 4-wheeler. Clearly as a community we are committed to our youth, our less fortunate, our horses and thus our future as a thriving industry. When the 50th U.S. Nationals concluded, many were sad, many were tired from a long ten days, and many came away with wellearned red roses, generously donated prizes and prize money. Still, those and many more are already planning for an even better 51st U.S. Nationals in 2017. See you there!

American Arabian Champions A Genetic Melting Pot
T
by Theresa Cardamone
o breed or exhibit a United States National Champion has been the primary goal of American Arabian horse enthusiasts for the last fifty years. That fact is true across the board for all disciplines, including an array of diverse performance divisions which showcase the unique versatility of the Arabian breed. But it is the halter classes—judged against the same breed standard for half a century—that most directly capture the attention of fellow devotees of the Arabian horse all over the world. The honor and assumption of excellence attached to earning the title of U.S. National Champion Mare or U.S. National Champion Stallion have been proven barometers for improvement of the breed for five decades. Through their exceptional progeny, the American Arabian champions have profoundly affected the globalization of the Arabian horse industry. This year, the halter finals were filled with truly magnificent horses who represented programs located all around the globe. In every instance, generations of early American breeding provided infusions of blood without which these modern Arabian show horses would not exist. The careful selection and importation of foundation stock by enterprising domestic breeders from long-established studs in Egypt, Poland, England, and elsewhere resulted in the preservation of crucial strains in a gene pool of a melting pot as diverse as America itself. Those strains continue to breed true, whether at home or abroad.

The exquisite 2016 U.S. National Champion Mare MD Hibat Allah was bred by Ecuadorian native Manuel Durini and is now owned by a partnership managed by Aria International. With a strong Kuhailan sire line through Bey Shah and his antecedents and a dam line that embraces the Bask/ Khemosabi cross, Hibat Allah is as “all-American” as they come! The Reserve Champion Mare, Impressa MI, has a well-stamped international pedigree rooted in a Polish dam line further developed in 1960’s America and exported to Australia where it was used by Mulawa Stud in creating Hibat Allah’s bottom side. Former World Champion Stallion Marajj returned to the United States from his home at Albidayer Stud in Sharjah to wrest the 2016 U.S. National Champion Stallion title from his worthy opponent, Equator. The influence of early Gleannloch import Morafic filters the influence of Nazeer on the sire line of Marajj’s pedigree and complements his dam’s side, which boasts multiple crosses to Bask through Lasma and Varian bloodlines. Equator, though bred in Poland, is a son of American-bred QR Marc, who contributes many lines to early American foundational breeding. The strength and value of that American breeding was evident in the younger champions as well. National Champion Futurity Colt Turismo RA is a double-great-grandson of Gazal Al Shaqab, who was conceived in America and is now dubbed the foundation sire of the contemporary Arabian. Turismo has a dam line that is anchored in some of the earliest Arabian strains imported to America way back at the turn of the last century. Foundation mare Haffia was foaled in 1906 and is only the 45th Arabian horse ever registered in America. Albidayer Stud’s recent purchase of Pitonisa AS saw her winning the National Champion Futurity Filly honors, showing the enduring value of McCoy breeding on her dam’s side and the pioneering Al-Marah influx of Crabbet-heavy bloodlines through her sire, Ever After NA. The National Champion yearlings were no exceptions to the ongoing tale of American influence abroad. The Champion Yearling Colt, Na-Mous Al Shahania, is a Qatari-homebred son of Brazilian National Champion FA El Shawan, who was himself bred in the United States. The distaff sides of both his sire and dam have strong ties to early Crabbet imports, with dominant Ansata breeding adding elegance and type. Dan and Maureen Grossman showed their homebred Pink Rose SRA to her honors as National Champion Yearling Filly. In addition to boasting a trendy combination of dominant stallions, both sides of her pedigree are packed with early imports from the storied Crabbet Park program that provide a firm foundation for future generations. In Tulsa, the breeding classes are isolated from the performance classes; they are held in a separate Pavilion on the show grounds. While this provides a focused venue for the halter division, it unfortunately prevents many of the international breeders who attend the show from experiencing the Arabian performance horse in all its American glory. Fanning the flames of interest in “ridden” classes in Europe and around the world could capitalize on an emergent market while celebrating the crosspollination of halter and performance aficionados at home. Blending halter and performance schedules to avoid conflicts would showcase both the form and function of the breed. The more the Arabian horse is presented to the public as an all-around perfect choice, the better. Even one special moment can illustrate that potent potential. Marajj had just wowed the crowd, full of himself and near bursting with exuberance as he danced on his hind legs, before being judged by the panel in the stallion finals. As he exited the arena, the new champion encountered a young fan, a little girl who was delighted beyond measure when she asked if she could pet Marajj and was lifted onto the back of the now-solicitous and ever-so-careful stallion! To see the electrifying energy of the show horse so immediately transformed into an intelligent caretaker of children was a shining example of the special qualities of the Arabian horse and their intangible connection to mankind. It was a moment that, once witnessed, could be taken to heart as the seed for a new and lasting passion between an ardent admirer and the Arabian horse. n

What was the highlight for you at this year’s 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Nationals? Winning the U.S. National Championship in the Futurity Gelding class with Vladimir BFA, by Veraz, with Ted Carson. This is the 49th year of our showing Arabian horses. Having had one Reserve National Champion Futurity Stallion, Saladins Allon in 1991 and multiple top tens with some of our other horses over the years, winning a National Championship this year was a dream come true. We want to express our appreciation to Ted Carson for his passion, commitment and professionalism. This was the highlight for the Graffeo family.
– John, Annette and Sam Graffeo
Our favorite part of this year’s U.S. Nationals was the Arabian Yearling Fillies class. We luckily won the class with our Pink Rose SRA. Beyond the exhilarating win, the class used comparative judging and the spectators had such a great time rooting for their favorite filly—loved it!
– Maureen Grossman
The highlight for me at this year’s Nationals was watching a few of the great horses we have bred show for their new owners. I was especially proud of Inferno PF, who earned a top ten with Brett Becker in the hunter pleasure futurity and in halter with Dan Whitt. I enjoyed cheering for him with his owner Deb Tierney. I also enjoyed cheering for Mystic Magnolia PF with her new owners, Dixie and Robert North and Carol and Stu Nierenburg. It was such a pleasure getting to know all of them. The real highlight was making such great new friends. The Arabian horse industry is full of such wonderful people.
– Jessie Szymanski-Hoag
My most enjoyable moments at U.S. Nationals is always reconnecting with friends I only see at shows, but the highlights for me this year were the three horses bred by Thirteen Oaks Arabians who achieved National Top Tens: Soltire TO, who won 4 & 5 Year Old Stallions and then went on to win Senior Stallions Top Ten (3rd) with Keith Krichke; Natalee TO, Top Ten Jr. Mare (3rd) with Keith for owner Will Davis; and Phadrach, Top Ten
Western Pleasure Amateur with owner Van Jacobsen. Congratulations to all the winners! – Maureen Horton
Seeing babies we have bred and raised in the show ring winning against the best horses in the country.
– Suzanne Perkins
The 50th annual U.S. National Championships was very special for myself and Rae-Dawn Arabians. As breeders, we strive to breed the very best horse we can, in hopes our hard work, perseverance, and ultimately our horses, are rewarded deservingly. Seeing our homebred RD Marciea Bey (by Bey Ambition) center ring winning her Reserve National Championship Futurity Filly title with our trainer Bruno Gurialdelli and standing amongst some of the finest Arabian Futurity fillies in the country was a very proud moment. To that end, RD Marciea Bey represents the second generation of the Rae-Dawn Arabians breeding program, herself being out of RD Marciena, who also stood in the very same ring when she was crowned U.S. National Champion Futurity Filly. The icing on the cake was being recognized by Arabian Horse Times as the Leading Breeder of Halter horses at U.S. Nationals (Rae-Dawn was also the Leading Breeder of Halter horses at Canadian Nationals too)!
– Murray Popplewell
There were many “highlights” at U.S. Nationals, one personal to me, and another that illustrates the camaraderie among the clients of Team Midwest. First, it was a personal highlight for me to witness the get and grand-get of my Saddlebred mare, CF Mamie’s Night Out, winning seven national championships and reserves in their respective Half-Arabian halter divisions. If ever there was a horse that deserved the title of “dream-maker,” she is the one. The second highlight was the thrilling win by Pink Rose SRA and Alcides Rodrigues in the purebred yearling filly class. The Pavilion came to life as ten breathtaking fillies vied for the national championship title, and one certainly could not miss the team, dressed in pink, holding their pink roses and signs, as they cheered on their favorite filly to the win.

Competition And Classes Raised The Roof!
English
2016 U. S . NATIONA LS
It’s nearly a sure bet that this year’s English classes roused and raised the ‘whoop, whoop’ and whistling sound level from the Ford Arena to new, record-setting decibels! From the $100,000/$50,000 Purebred/Half-Arabian Futurity classes, to the Arabian English Pleasure class closing the show, the crowds were thrilled with the quality, action, athleticism and pure glitz and glam of this high action collection of classes. Adding even more enthusiastic energy to the English disciplines were the young horse and young trainer teams. A noteworthy example was the Reserve Champion Arabian Country Pleasure Junior Horse team of CP Manifesto and trainer Josh Shino of Stachowski Farms. Still, clearly there are mature trainers out there ‘killing it’ when it comes to winning those roses … for instance, a big congratulations to Heirs Noble Love (Afires Heir x Noble Aphroditie), the 2016 Unanimous U.S. National Arabian English Pleasure Champion and Joel Kiesner, for bringing down the house on finale night! This ride and many others from young trainers, established trainers and amateurs alike, point to a bright future for our fancy stepping members of the Arabian show circuit!

What was the highlight for you at this year’s 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Nationals? U.S. Nationals, for me, had many highlights! Spending time with so many friends, watching my very good friend, Cathy Vecsey and Mandalay Bay win the Arabian Amateur Park again (it was so exciting!), getting the opportunity to show two of my horses that I love so much (Juke Box Hero and I have been together for many years and every time I ride him it is a thrill), and last but certainly not least, winning my first U.S. National Championship with Noble Supreme CRF—it was beyond my wildest dreams!
– Toni Dolby
There were many highlights for me at this year’s 50th U.S. National Championship show. It’s hard to limit it to only one so I will limit it to several! As always, the biggest highlight is getting to visit with so many great friends while watching so many amazing horses and riders. Another incredible highlight was watching Jessie Clinton-DeSoto ride my mare Girl On Fire to the AEPA H/A English win! Jessie rode her perfectly as always. It was truly beautiful and a joy to watch. To top it off, winning Reserve Champion in the Park class with my best buddy Rebel Love MA was beyond exciting. He always gives his all and could not be more fun to ride. It was a great show! Can’t wait for next year!
– Leslie Garvis
Among the many highlights, the most rewarding was winning the English Pleasure class with Shenanigan. It’s been an incredible ride with him the last six years and I can’t wait for more memories. He has been a blessing to me and my family in many ways!
– Katherine Kirby
I love being at Nationals! The quality of the horses was extraordinary, as it should be. I was very proud of our black stud, QH Serengeti, with his top ten in the Junior Horse English class with Peter Stachowski in the irons. I was also proud of my new young country horse VA Baskhada. We didn’t get a ribbon, but we had good rides. Watch out for us next year! And of course, it’s always great to see friends that I don’t see too often. It’s a wonderful show with wonderful horses and wonderful friends.
– Rae Paige Schwarz
Being able to show in the new Breeders Sweepstakes Jackpot class on Saturday night was my highlight. Sal Mineo, or “Lester,” as we call him, is also my favorite horse to show and he was amazing that night! .
– Amanda Purdin Standish
2016 was another good U.S. Nationals for the early horses sired by Baskghazi and The Renaissance. This year alone, their offspring achieved three reserve championships and seven top tens. Each win was rewarding. My favorite moment was the farm-bred filly by The Renaissance, Catch My Breath SMP, winning the Reserve U.S. National Half-Arabian English Pleasure Championship with Josh Shino in the irons. She was purchased from Smoky Mountain Park Arabians as a weanling by Kim Jarvis through agent, Jim Stachowski. Congratulations to Louie, Maia and their daughter, Julia Nastri, who purchased Catch My Breath SMP after her brilliant performance, and we look forward to your success with this talented, amateur friendly mare.
– Jacque Thompson
Without a doubt, the highlight of the show for me this year was watching my friend, Toni Dolby, win the Arabian Country 55 & Over. That ride represented what hard work, dedication, and determination can accomplish. As blessed as I am to have enjoyed success in the national arena, I don’t ever want to forget how exciting, emotional and celebratory a win should be, and seeing someone win their first U.S. National Championship brought those feelings back to me with stunning clarity. It was an amazing show with horses of unparalleled quality, and I was honored to be an exhibitor.

Western Pleasure
2016 U. S . NATIONA LS
Superstars In The Show Pen … Generous In Giving Back The Western Pleasure horses and trainers at our 50th anniversary worked ‘extra specially’ hard this year. Slow gaited performances were not only in the competition show pen, but also generously donated and demonstrated at Wednesday night’s The Town And Country Showdown. Pairing up the very best Western Pleasure mounts with English riders and raising funds for the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund was not for the meek and timid! Many a rider likely muttered under their breath, “This slow moving jog-trot and lope is a real balancing act. How do these Western folk make it look so easy?” Clearly it was a winning combination, as the raucous cheering and bidding reaped wonderful donations to a truly worthy cause: helping our own. The ever beautiful, quiet and intelligent Western Arabian horse was forefront at this year’s show as usual.

What was the highlight for you at this year’s 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Nationals?
The highlight for me at this year’s U.S. Nationals 50th Anniversary was my stallion, Bentley SF winning the Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse with Josh Quintus. I purchased Bentley as a 3 year old after a long search for a purebred. Kristi Waters, the owner of KM Bugatti, told me about a colt for sale that was sired by her stallion. After seeing the video, I knew immediately that this could be the horse that I had been searching for. I’m not the most knowledgeable about young western horses, but I do know pretty when I see it. I assured his breeder, Sharon Davis, that I would give him a good home and that he would be special for me, and I have been excited about him since then. Now the rest is history. He won the junior horse class, a first National win for him, as well as Josh’s first time winning the Jr. Horse class. It was quite the highlight!
– Kelli Aguirre
Beyond winning two National Championships, the highlight for me was this year’s AWPA classes. Being a breeder of western pleasure horses, it was exciting for me to see young horses being showcased in the AWPA classes. They were extremely competitive and to have a horse in the top ten was truly an honor! My personal highlight was Slate A winning the Arabian Western Futurity. Not only did my family breed Slate, but also his sire, Onyx A, who won the Futurity in 2009 and his dam, Psyanne A, who won the Futurity in 2005. And to have my husband train and show him made the win truly one for the whole family!
– Anne (Whitaker) Keller
This year’s 50th U.S. Nationals delivered quite an impact on all involved. I felt honored to watch exquisite Arabian horses and witness the magic and emotion of Wednesday’s Horsemen’s Distress Fund event. My highlight of the show came on Saturday morning, when my horse CPH Lonestarr won the inaugural AWPA Jarvis $50,000 H/A Western Pleasure Futurity class with trainer Abe Cotton. Shortly after that, I teamed up with my beautiful mare Next Top Model LOA and won Reserve National Champion in the first Arabian ABS Western Pleasure Jackpot class. The kicker was doing a side by side victory pass with the Champion of the class, Regina Kruger, also from Cotton Performance Horses. Just thinking about this year’s U.S. Nationals warms my heart! Thanks to everyone involved with the new AWPA and ABS classes!

Hunter Pleasure
2016 U. S . NATIONA LS
Among The Largest Classes At U.S. Nationals It was easy to view Hunter classes at the 50th U.S. Nationals simply because there were so many! Much needed categorical breakdown was especially evident and appreciated with this most populous of disciplines featuring a stunning array of Open, Amateur, Futurity and Maturity classes. And even more necessary with this discipline, the breakdown of age groups! The Hunter Pleasure competition ‘bar’ continues to be raised in the purebred and Half-Arabian competitions. In times past, some considered the Hunter division as a place for show horses ‘not quite able to make it’ in the English and/or Western show pen. Today this notion feels so passe’ as the Hunter horses nowadays are bred and revered from all ends of the breeding spectrum. Turns out, that talent can come from any well thought out breeding program. Our Arabian Hunters keep getting better and better, and by doing so, clearly prove that ‘beauty is as beauty does.’

2016 U.S. NATIONALS
What was the highlight for you at this year’s 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Nationals?
Highlights of the show for me were Dick Ames winning Reserve National Champion on TA Mozart and coming back from a -5 points, and Michele going National Champion with DC Gretzky and Reserve Champion with both Hang Tite CF and ‘Gizzlle’ (Were Dun Miss Kitty). – Joe Betten My highlight of this year’s 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Nationals was joining fellow McNutt Performance Horses clientele, staff and competitors in sharing the joy of winning numerous championships and top tens. Our happiness and camaraderie was captured perfectly in a terrific group photo taken during the Tuesday, October 25, award presentations. My horses Whata Chic Olena TR and Little Bit Of Boom tied for Reserve National Champion Open Reining Horse. Whata Chic Olena TR was also the very first Half-Arabian Reining Derby Champion. A great day for everyone at Tulsa’s Mustang Arena! Thanks Crystal! Reining Rocks – Catherine Cole Ferandelli There were several memorable moment at the 50th U.S. Nationals for me. Watching Dick Ames ride to a Reserve National Champion on his Arabian reiner Mozart; I had a wonderful and exciting time riding my Half-Arabian English horse to a Reserve National Championship—thank you, Stachowski Team, for all of your support! I also had a great ride on Joe’s stallion DC Gretzy who had never been shown in a regional class. I am very proud of him. I also rode to Reserve Champion on Were Dun Miss Kitty in the Half-Arabian Reining Prime Time division—thank you, Crystal McNutt and team, for all you do! – Michele Betten I grew up in the 1950’s on a working cattle ranch in Nebraska. My dad always said I could put “a gopher down the hole” with my horse, and I am happy to know that my working western horses can still do the same. Also, being 80 and still showing AND winning … as well as watching mine and others’ western working horses show is a huge highlight for me! – Eleanor Hamilton

Specialty Classes
2016 U. S . NATIONA LS
Proof Positive Of Arabian Horse Versatility By current definition, our Arabian/Half-Arabian specialty classes include: *Show Hack *Driving *Mounted Native Costume *Side Saddle (Western and English) *English Trail *Showmanship Consider this: Each and every one of these disciplines involves not only its own unique attire but also its own specialty tack and equipment! Further, these classes were featured in all three show arenas: Ford, Pavilion, and Mustang. One had to be mindful and current with class scheduling to make certain they’d be present to view and cheer on these uniquely talented horses and their rider/ driver/handlers. What’s especially ‘cool’ about specialty classes is the fact that many of the horses entered in them perform in other disciplines too. Show Hack horses commonly compete in Country English; Driving horses frequently do too. Native Costume horses? Yes, you may see the same horse in an English class or two. Side Saddle? The same horse will carry its rider with a conventional saddle and perform just as admirably with completely different cues. English trail horses will also take those complex trail obstacles in a western frame and gait. And finally, Showmanship takes in all those horses who display mannerly ground manners for their handlers. Specialty classes are some of the newest and fastest growing of all the competitions featured at Nationals. They offer yet another opportunity to showcase the everversatile Arabian horse!

What was the highlight for you at this year’s 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Nationals? The highlight this year for me was finally being able to compete at U.S. Nationals and being able to hang out with my friends from all over the country that I only get to see at shows. Coming home with three National Championships was definitely a cherry on top! Paul Day walking around dressed as Donald Trump on Saturday night was a close second though!
– Sarah Beth Womble
The highlight for me at this year’s U.S. Nationals was going top ten in both the Arabian and Half-Arabian Western Side Saddle with two horses that have only ever shown side saddle two other times before that, as well showing in the Arabian and Half-Arabian Western Open.
– Katie Garland
This anniversary year was special to me because it is my first year working for Arabian Horse Times! It is always great to catch up with old friends, but I thoroughly enjoy making new ones and connecting with folks I now work with who I only had little contact with in the past. Watching the Arabian Western Pleasure was certainly a highlight for me as well!
– Lesley Blain
There were many exciting moments at the U.S. Nationals, but I’d have to say my biggest thrill ended up in the halter ring with three great wins! Turismo RA being crowned National Champion Futurity Colt while beautifully presented by Michael Byatt, and She Be A Rockstar taking two Reserve National Championships in H/A Saddle Type Mares Open, shown by yours truly and in AAOTH presented by Greg Lymer! All of our horses did well: Razcal Bey, Top Ten Senior Stallion for owners Steve and Kathy Polcsan; RGT Breathin Afire racked up double top tens in H/A Country Open and Driving; and Rohara Femme Fatal won Top Ten Arabian Mare AAOTH with owner Corinne Coleo. It was a spectacular show. The performance arenas lit up the world with gifted horsemen and women and the horses shown were off the charts! Special credit goes out to Mary Trowbridge and the Horsemen’s Distress Fund for putting on another incredible Wednesday night event! Kudos to everyone who participated. Another star on my list!

Reporting From Mustang Arena A Big “Whoop Whoop” To Arabian Working Western! by Catherine Cole Ferandelli
T
he 50th U.S. Nationals outdid itself with fun, festivities, memories and warm community camaraderie. The very air was filled with a feeling of pure happiness; it seemed everyone was simply feeling blessed to be a part of this ‘granddaddy’ of all Arabian horse competitions. What a joy it was to witness the very best of the best.
Since 2014, Working Western has expanded to needing two arenas to host all its’ events. The Trail Horse competitions, now being held in the Pavilion Arena, had their own set of judges—a real testimony to the ever increasing entries in this so very specialized discipline and worthy of its own feature! But in Mustang Arena, where this blogger had the distinct pleasure of covering and commenting daily about all the Working Western events, new and old friendships were made and met, along with gathering and sharing sweet memories that will last a lifetime. Here are just a few …
Judy Kibler, President of Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA):
“I thought the reining at U.S. Nationals this year was outstanding! The talent and sportsmanship among the riders and the quality of the horses was the best we have seen in years. The strongest area was in the AAOTR/ATR classes. With 40 plus riders competing in various reining levels, the future of our reining division is bright. Another exciting area for our ARHA and the reining world was the opportunity AHA and the U.S. National Show Commission gave our National Champion Arabian and Half-Arabian reining horses, with the “Challenge Ride Off ” in the Ford Truck Arena Friday night. The level of excitement was amazing with the two great horses “showing off,” their spins, run downs and turns thrilling the crowd. The applause was deafening! A huge thank you to Crystal McNutt and Nathan Kent for their outstanding sportsmanship; it was a great presentation! We received messages from all over the world from people excited about wanting to ride Arabian and HalfArabian reining horses!”
Amanda Golestani and Dun Waltzin’, 2016 National Champion Showmanship AATH and Western Horsemanship AATR (unanimous!):
“The best part about the Mustang arena and the Reining, Horsemanship and Showmanship classes specifically, was the sense of camaraderie at the ring. One of my favorite moments of the show was waiting to see who made it back in the AATH Showmanship class. While eagerly waiting in the warm up pen, all exhibitors unintentionally formed a circle and as the results came in from the announcer, everyone clapped and loudly cheered for their fellow exhibitors. The support and sense of community was truly overwhelming.”
Ar abian Horse Times | 202 | Volume 47, No. 6
Eleanor Hamilton, Eleanor’s Arabians and Arabian Reining Horse Foundation Breeder:
“I’m proud to see reining here at the 50th U.S. Nationals raising the bar in excitement for not only the competitors, but the spectators!” What is Eleanor’s fondest U.S. Nationals reining memory? ”When our late, great stallion Hesa Zee won his first U.S. Nationals, our hearts were in our throats until the last score was announced. Reining never reveals the winner until the very end of the run … anything can happen in between … and then we won!” Indeed, Eleanor won with not only a great performing stallion, but with the start of a legendary breeding program which continues to win in all the Western show pens to this day.
Ashlye Daniel, Amateur ‘Newbie’ To Mustang Arena:
“In 2014 and 2015 I watched the reining events in Mustang Arena with a dear friend who competes. I had very little knowledge of reining, yet she enthusiastically explained to me the history, purpose, pattern structure, competition levels, challenges, and which horses are renowned in the reining discipline. Initially, I could not discern a flying lead change to save my life, but her patience in pointing out what makes a “good run” sunk in; soon I was “Yeeaahing” with the rest of the Mustang arena crowd at appropriate times. I can’t whistle very well, or I would have joined them in that aspect of cheering on the competitors! In March of this year, I purchased a Half-Arabian reining horse, Twylight Zone. My dreams came true on this 50th anniversary of the U.S. Nationals, when I competed in the rookie level and made the top ten cut! I am hooked and hope to qualify next year!”
Melinda Lawrence, Arabian Working Western Community, A Social Media Forum:
“I loved the new classes added this year, including Herd Work, Limited Open Reining and the Open Derby. With great participation in the first Derby classes, including nine in the Arabian Open and 13 in the Half-Arabians, it is our desire to build on those numbers, continuing to showcase our aged horses. There was also an increased camaraderie across the disciplines. Folks seemed to be spectating more across the board, and Phyllis LaMalfa hosting her Markel party in Mustang Arena made us all feel accepted and appreciated. Folks commented that it sure looked like we were having fun! We were very excited to learn that folks were talking about the reining prizes all around the Tulsa showgrounds, the buzz being that reiners also got prizes and not just ribbons, roses and trophies. A BIG THANKS to all our prize donors, including the Webbs out of El Paso, Tex., for their fabulous and fancy donation of a Western Show Saddle to the winner of Arabian Reining Derby. We at Arabian Working Western Community will be striving to make 2017 an even more outstanding, exciting and enjoyable event across all the disciplines in Mustang Arena. I have a commitment for another trophy saddle next year as well as a perpetual trophy for reiners. We hope to put together another celebration type party to be held in honor of all of our working western events and horses. It is my personal goal to help make working western events bigger and better each year!”
Dick Ames, Cedar Ridge Arabians:
“Working Western continues to get bigger and better! My stallion, TA Mozart, and I are proud to compete every year in the reining pen at Mustang Arena. What a great gift to earn Reserve National Champion with Mozart this year in the Arabian Reining Primetime AAOTR!” What is Dick’s fondest U.S. Nationals Working Western memory? With split second thinking, Dick exclaimed, “That’s easy… I’ll never forget Jack Teague’s ride on Authenticity wayyy back in the ‘70s!” A fitting memory shared at an unforgettable 50th U.S. Arabian Horse Nationals. Come join us in Mustang Arena in 2017! n Ar abian Horse Times | 203 | Volume 47, No. 6
The Pavilion Arena’s Working Western Event The Arabian/Half-Arabian Trail Horse by Catherine Cole Ferandelli
V
isiting Tulsa’s Pavilion Arena the first few days of our 50th U.S. Nationals, one found the show ring choc a bloc with an amazing array of obstacles. Every year, renowned course expert, Robert Dehn, carefully creates a series of trail horse patterns for the Open, Amateur, Junior Horse and English Trail horse events. Ask anyone who’s ever shown in the Trail Horse discipline and they’ll tell you in no uncertain terms that course design precision and accuracy is paramount. Dehn’s patterns rival an engineering feat in the eyes of those who train and show in this discipline which uniquely partners the horse and rider. Arabian and Half-Arabian Working Western events are among the fastest growing in our competition circuit. Within that circle, the trail horse show pen rivals reining as the fastest growing working western competition. Indeed, this year’s U.S. Nationals Trail Horse pen saw some 138 ‘goes’ over some truly challenging courses. Defying the fabled ‘Spooky Arab’ stereotype, trail horses deliver an exacting performance over bridges, poles, jumps, through gates and more, with cadence, rhythm, interest, charisma and calm. How does this happen?
Working Western Amateur rider Amanda Golestani and her ‘wonder horse’ Half-Arabian Dun Waltzin’ personify the versatility of the Arabian Trail Horse with their unbreakable bond. This year alone, the pair earned championship titles in Amateur Horsemanship and Showmanship, and top ten titles in Reining and Trail, both English and Western.
At this year’s competition, AHT asked a few of the folks who excel in it and what kind of horse they seek to earn those trail horse championship red roses.
Michael Damianos and Magnum Shogun+//
Recounting a stellar 50th U.S. Nationals, Michael Damianos proudly relates a great story, “We trail horse trainers perform with horses of all styles and pedigrees. The perfect example of this is our four-time National Champion Arabian Magnum’s Showgun (‘Gunnar’).” This Padrons Psyche gelding was not a promising prospect when he came to Michael. Looking back, Damianos shares, “Gunnar and I, same as any partnership, needed plenty of time and plenty of practice. Trail horses and riders require a bond much like two ballroom dancers. The course creates a performance of tempo and balance changes. They come to you quickly, yet you must keep up a constant intuitiveness and sensitivity to calmly handle them, yet maintain cadence. Our horses perform much like bi-athletes … that is, they’re expected to do a variety of gymnastic-like maneuvers shown off with steady charisma. Horse and rider together are constantly assessing and adjusting as they master the trail course.” Damianos continues,
Ar abian Horse Times | 204 | Volume 47, No. 6
“Athleticism is important, but if I had to choose, I’d take mental capability over physical any day. The trail horse discipline requires lots of practice and repetition to obtain the muscle memory needed to go over the course with grace. I tell everyone: If you want to show in Trail, show like you’ve never lost and practice like you’ve never won.” He pictures a bright future for the trail horse classes and in fact, all the disciplines that make up working western. “The introduction of English Trail to U.S. Nationals in 2014 has created a gateway for new riders to the trail show pen,” Damianos says. “Amateurs can show with two hands and then evolve to the one handed western style should they choose. Our western trail horses can enjoy a different riding style going over the English trail course. “ On the subject of the trail horse course, Damianos adds, “I’m pleased to see the trail course designers continuously fine tuning and focusing on improved flow. What’s to keep any English, Kit Hall and TR It Takes Grit Dressage, Working Hunter or Dressage horse from taking on a trail horse pattern? As long as the horse and rider are in sync and the course creates the flow, anything is possible.” Damianos is quick to add, “AHA and the Show Commission have done a great job and have been exceptionally generous in listening to our requests and adding additional classes to our U.S. Nationals Trail Horse itinerary. We love having the Pavilion Arena for our performances. Having our own judges’ panel makes it so much easier to practice and perform in our other disciplines. I’m convinced this has brought new and long established performers to the trail horse pen.” He laughs warmly, “This year, long time trainer Kit Hall brought Half-Arabian Junior Trail Horse, TR It Takes Grit, and they cleaned up, winning both the Half-Arabian Junior Trail Horse and the Half-Arabian Trail Horse Futurity. This proves we fellow old dogs can certainly keep up with the new tricks!” But newcomers are making a big impact too. Quick to recognize this, Damianos says, “Trainer Sterling Bradley has already won multiple national titles in trail, despite his just entering this world but a couple years ago. Yes, the traditional and the new blood are beaconing a bright future for our Trail Horse competitions.” Long time Trail Horse trainer Kathy Bast smiles while recollecting her 2016 U.S. Nationals memories. “The Pavilion Arena created a truly festive environment for our events,” Bast shares. “This year our classes expanded to an additional two days. For the first time, we had a backdrop for our championship photos. All of this created an excitement which in my mind, made for the best Nationals ever!” Despite other commitments requiring Bast to depart Tulsa prior to the end of the show, she left the Trail Horse show pen earning the Trail Horse Overall High Score and partnering with Marco NA, earned the Arabian English Trail Open championship title. Bast continues, “Our numbers are growing as folks both new to showing and already engaged are drawn to trail horse competitions. Trail horse classes are a natural cross-over for the working western disciplines. Amateurs love the challenge of taking their horse through a complex course of obstacles and making it look fresh and pretty. The connection with your mount through practice develops a near instinctive bond and trust. Arabian horses have been bred to embrace humans, plus their innate intelligence is drawn to the constant change of course the trail horse discipline offers.” Looking ahead, Bast sees more horse show folks enjoying trying out and taking on the trail horse competitions, “There’s nothing like successfully navigating a complicated series of obstacles on your horse and making it pretty. By changing up our schooling constantly, our trail horses stay curious, confident, and trusting. What could be better than that?” n

tarted in 1981, the 35th Minnesota Fall Fest has many great attributes, but one thing that sets this first-ever futurity show apart from others and makes it exciting for all those involved is its auction classes and over $200,000 in prize money offered at this year’s show to halter and performance amateur-only exhibitors. It is a highly anticipated show for breeders and amateurs from all over the country who love coming to the Fall Fest and competing with the best.
This 3-day event from September 30 – October 2, is heavily supported, both by its Minnesota Arabian Horse Breeder (MAHB) Members and yearly exhibitors who know it is a proving ground of past years’ auction breedings and a great opportunity to create more future champions by bidding on over 80 of the top stallions in the industry today in their annual breeding Auction held on Saturday night. With the weather at its very best, helpful and efficient office and show staff always available, and the show’s inclusive atmosphere, this year’s Fall Fest show never failed to provide those who participated with opportunities to gather together. The competition was fierce with rider/horse numbers up significantly from 2015 and the annual Progressive Dinner was attended by many. The stallion auction, housed in a new setting in the Ag Center, was beautiful, well received and productive with revenue also up from the year before. Always up for a fun time, patrons were generous once more with entertaining events to raise money for charities, including the Saturday afternoon Pro Stick Horse Race, which was hilarious and raised a lot of money. “At a time where everyone seems to be looking for answers to cure what is ailing the Arabian horse industry,” Greg Brown summarizes, “perhaps we should take a look at one answer that has been leading the way for 35 years. We provide a reason to breed Arabian horses and a forum to present, merchandise, and reward Arabians. We live for the purebred Arabian horse.” The Minnesota Fall Fest truly has it all!

Regarded as one of the finest shopping and dining destinations in the world, Scottsdale is a world-class mecca for the Arabian horse. Offering the Arabian horse community another opportunity to showcase the very best the breed has to offer in an unparalleled venue, the Arabian National Breeder Finals presents a unique halter/breeding showcase event that offers prize money and abundant marketing opportunities for breeders and purebred Arabian horse enthusiasts. The Arabian National Breeder Finals is the only Arabian horse show in the country that offers an award to every breeder of every show champion, and has become a treasured annual tradition for the last five years. Breeders are invited to center ring to receive public recognition of their breeding accomplishments, while the owner and handler receive traditional show championship awards. A High Point Breeder Award is also given out by Hennessey Arabians which has been the proud sponsor of this exclusive award since the beginning. And this year’s Title Sponsor was Royal Arabians, also proud supporters annually, of the Arabian National Breeder Finals. Following is only a small sampling of the quality that can be found at this dynamic and ever-growing show. Don’t be left out! It is on the to-do list of all serious breeders. Join us in 2017! n

Cedar Ridge Arabians Consistently Creating Champions
by Theresa Cardamone
L
ongevity is defined by Merriam-Webster as long life, length of life, and most pertinently here, the length of time that something or someone lasts or continues. As the United States National Championship Horse Show concludes for the 50th time, Cedar Ridge Arabians and the Ames family are continuing in their fifth decade of commitment to the Arabian breed and their second century as dedicated horsemen and breeders of world class Percherons. Cedar Ridge-bred champions of both breeds have earned hundreds of national and international awards, competing against the finest of their peers.
Ar abian Horse Times | 232 | Volume 47, No. 6
Dick, Lollie, and Lara Ames are hands-on breeders and owners who enjoy every aspect of their immersion in the world of the Arabian horse and take great satisfaction in having produced so many unforgettable performance champions for themselves and their satisfied customers. In 1988, Dick Ames was at the whip as he drove Royal Taga (Taga x Lazona, by Ferzon) to the U.S. National Championship in Pleasure Driving, Amateur Owner to Drive. With a sire line that traces back through Witez II, Royal Taga was an early example of the Cedar Ridge preference to include Polish blood in their program, complementing domestic lines. In 1999, the beloved and highly successful Cedar Ridge performance sire Matoi (Zodiac Matador x Toi Ellenai, by Toi Soldier) was the unanimous U.S. National Champion Park Horse before carrying Lara Ames to unanimous National Champion Park Amateur Owner to Ride titles in both the United States and Canada in 2000. As the new millennium blossomed, the Ames horses continued to excel. A Noble Cause (IXL Noble Express x Sweet Summer Fire, by Afire Bey V ) did double-duty, winning his first U.S. National Championships in both open Pleasure Driving and with Dick Ames in Pleasure Driving, AAOTD in 2008. Dick and A Noble Cause repeated that win the following year and once again in 2011. Meanwhile, Lara rode him to the U.S. Reserve National Champion English Pleasure, Adult Amateur Owner to Ride honor. A true family horse!
Ar abian Horse Times | 233 | Volume 47, No. 6
While it is impossible to list every horse that has come through the Cedar Ridge barn and into the National spotlight or every one of the prestigious titles they have claimed, it is fair to say that there are scores of Arabian enthusiasts who are grateful to have selected a Cedar Ridge horse. They have been the mounts for many beaming winners over the last 40+ years. And it is inspiring to realize that the Ames family has no intention of slowing down. This year in Tulsa, Dick and Lara Ames were back in the saddle, competing once again with the best of the best. Dick rode his splendid reining stallion TA Mozart (Kordelas x Marieta, by Arbil) to the 2016 U.S. Reserve National Champion Reining Primetime Non-Pro AAOTR title, while Lara took Reserve National Champion Country English Pleasure AAOTR honors on Ames Inspiration (A Noble Cause x Justa New Look, by The Chief Justice). As if to underline the fact that she is a multi-faceted horsewoman, Lara also showed her elegant mare Perfirka (Gazal Al Shaqab x Perforacja, by Ernal) to the title of United States National Champion Mare, AAOTH. Clearly, the Ames family and Cedar Ridge Arabians are more than ready to continue into the future, consistently creating champions.
