Winning With Heart, Class And A Humble Attitude ... Hezas Sweet Dreams

Some breeders want Arabian horses of great beauty, and some want horses with outstanding performance talents. At 87, Eleanor Hamilton of Eleanor’s Arabians has been a top breeder of Arabian and Half-Arabian horses for 39 years and always breeds for athletic ability and soundness of body and mind. Successful? Oh, yes.

One of several hundred Eleanor Hamilton National Champion success stories is Hezas Sweet Dreams (Hesa Zee+/ x Sweet Red Glo, by Colonels Dark Glo AQHA). Now 17 years old, she began her show career by winning Half-Arabian Open Reining with Eleanor’s Arabians’ trainer, Rod Matthiesen.

“Right from the start she was real quiet and good to deal with,” Rod recalls. “I think she is very representative of the Hesa Zee+/ horses. They are social horses by nature and good-minded, and they don’t like to be in trouble. Always tolerant and kind, from the beginning Hezas Sweet Dreams was never unhappy or impatient. She just tries to do what is wanted.”

Also known as “Ellie”, she is now a 15-time National or Reserve National Champion and 29-time National Top Ten, and almost all these awards were with riders 18 and under. This year, three young ladies in three different age divisions rode Ellie at the 2023 Youth Nationals in Oklahoma City, and all of them came home with National or Reserve National Championships. The oldest, Madison Rose, also celebrated her final year in Youth Nationals competition.

“My grandma Eleanor gave us Hezas Sweet Dreams on Christmas, 2016,” Madison says. “That’s why we called her “Ellie”, for Eleanor. She was originally for my younger brother Justin, but he wasn’t quite ready for her when we got her, so I got to show Ellie her first season with us, and then this year for my last time at Youth Nationals. Ellie loves everybody; she’s always perfect and she’s just the best.” A highlight of the show for Madison was winning the Half-Arabian Ranch Riding JTR 15-18 Championship with Ellie

(Madison was also third in the same class on Zee Lil Peppet), and the pair were also champions in the Half-Arabian Reining Seat Equitation JTR 15-18.

Isabella Sobral (Bella), is Mistie Sobral’s daughter and Laurie Long’s granddaughter. “As you can imagine, I’ve been riding since I was born,” Bella laughs. “My first time on Ellie was three days before I showed her at Youth, and she took care of me from the start. She’s a very patient and forgiving mare. In Horsemanship, I just asked Ellie and she did it. I’ve never ridden a horse so smooth; so ‘push button’. We had a great time. I would ride her again in a heartbeat!” Bella and Ellie unanimously earned the title of Half-Arabian Western Horsemanship JTR 14 & Under, then the pair earned Reserve National Champion in the Half-Arabian Ranch Riding JTR 14 & under. Bella also won the A/HA/AA Showmanship JTH 11-14 with her horse Redneck Girl. The 13-year-old horseman shows extensively both Arabian and Quarter Horses. She’s been to 14 shows already in 2023, and placed fourth overall in Reining at the Quarter Horse World Youth Show.

The last and youngest rider with Ellie at Youth Nationals was Taya Pavlick. At 8 years old, Taya was in her first real show horse season. She had a chance to ride Ellie a bit at Region 10 earlier in the summer, then a few times in Oklahoma at Youth Nationals as well. “Ellie is really so good,” Taya says. “We just clicked with each other. That’s what my mom says.” What else can you say? It was Taya’s third time in the show ring, and in a class of 19, Taya and Ellie took the National A/HA/AA Ranch Horse Rail Pleasure Walk/Trot 10 & Under Championship.

In case you haven’t been counting, that’s four National Championships and a Reserve at the 2023 Youth Nationals for Hezas Sweet Dreams and three different riders.

At the 2023 Youth and Mid Summer Nationals, 10 purebreds and Half-Arabians bred by Eleanor Hamilton won National honors; half of those earning Champion and/or Reserve. Pam Rose has eight Eleanor-owned and bred horses currently in training, aged 2 to 5 years. Pam says, “Eleanor’s personal combination of grit, good humor, work ethic and honesty have inspired new owners of Arabian horses since the early 1980s. I went to see her a few weeks ago and she was in rare form. We were going back and forth giving each other a hard time and she gave me a quick boot in the tail as I walked by. ‘See!’, she shouted, laughing. ‘I can still kick your butt!’ Like her horses, Eleanor Hamilton is truly one of a kind.”

In training exclusively with Pam Rose since 2017, Hezas Sweet Dreams is now out in pasture in Wisconsin with several good old friends, thoroughly enjoying the close of summer 2023. n

Amandas Song And Three Joyful Generations

At age 22, purebred chestnut gelding Amandas Song (Borsalino K x Salons Song) would seemingly be winding down his illustrious career as a stellar western pleasure competitor.

But “Song” has clearly chosen another path.

Owned and bred by equine attorney Michael Brooks Carroll and his daughter Shannon Tierney, Song is a formidable western pleasure mount, partnering in the show pen with Shannon and 14-year-old daughter Reese.

Named after Michael’s third daughter Amanda, Song personifies his pedigree. “By Salon, his dam side gave Song his graceful arched neck, strong bone and that Russian lineage athleticism,” Michael elaborates. “His sire, Lucy Whittier’s Borsalino K, gave him iconic Varian-bred strength and a boost of western pleasure talent.”

Shannon describes Song as “More like a Labrador than a horse. He follows Reese around, loves kids and gives out lots of kisses.”

Initially trained by Brett Becker and professionally prepared for successful showing by Rich Doran, it was always evident that Song was a shoo-in for western pleasure competition—although at his own classic, slow pace. Though shown sparingly as a junior horse, Song won many a blue ribbon at the Northern California horse shows.

Returning to the show pen as a bridle horse in 2010, for several years Song was a winner and champion at Region 3 and its well established A rated shows: Rancho Murieta, Diablo and Golden Gate to name a few.

Shannon, now busy with a busy career and raising her family, “retired” Song to Sherman Ranch. “We would visit Song over at the Shermans,” says Shannon, “and just ride him around. Their impeccable care kept him in great shape.”

One day in 2019, however, when head trainer Tammy Grinton of Earthquake Arabians was visiting Sherman Ranch and spotted Reese on Song, she stated firmly, “They could be national champions!” And fellow horse flesh expert Jill Sherman standing alongside, fervently agreed.

That set a plan in motion, Shannon recollects, “As Tammy put the team together, seamlessly preparing new rider Reese, Song, and myself for western pleasure show competition; as well as Dad, for motivation.”

At 19 years of age, Song began a third western pleasure career … Walk/ Trot with the third Carroll generation—Reese.

Song’s debut, shown by Reese and Shannon, was also his first Scottsdale show in 2020, earning him the title of Champion Western Pleasure Walk/ Jog 10 & Under with Reese and was in the ribbons with Shannon in Arabian Western Pleasure Select Rider.

Drawn to greater heights, the 2020 Youth and Mid Summer Nationals beaconed. Shannon and Song won top ten prizes in large, deep Arabian Western Pleasure Select Rider AATR and Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 40 & Over, and both he and Reese proudly came home with roses, winning Reserve Champion Arabian Western Pleasure Walk/Jog 10 & Under.

Reese’s potentially tricky leap from Walk/Trot to junior rider 14 & Under landed even greater accolades, when they won both the 2021 Scottsdale and Youth National championships in Arabian Western Pleasure JTR Select. Adding Arabian Ladies Side Saddle Western to their show schedule, Reese, Shannon and Song, won ribbons and championships at Pacific Slopes, Scottsdale and Youth and Mid Summer Nationals.

It was a special family affair at the 2022 Youth and Mid Summer Nationals when Shannon and Reese competed in the It’s All Relative class, where the youth rider shows the first direction and the adult amateur

the second. “Song took it all in,” Shannon laughs, “showing at his usual, favored slow western pleasure pace.” And at this year’s show, mother and daughter added four more titles (two of them Reserve Champion) to Song’s list of accomplishments in Western Pleasure and Side Saddle.

Skillfully cared for by Tammy and Earthquake Arabians, Song continues to give every indication he is onward bound to showing in 2024.

Shannon and Reese concur. “We will continue to show Song as long as he is healthy, happy and eager to compete,” says Shannon. “Our show schedule is limited to Scottsdale, Youth/Mid Summer Nationals, and a bit of local showing. That’s when grandpa comes to watch and cheer us on!”

For Michael, who fell in love with Arabian horses nearly five decades ago, Song personifies what Arabian horses do best—gift their two-legged family and friends with limitless, unbridled joy; bringing together and weaving the familial bonds even tighter for three generations. n

Farriers … The First Step To Success

What made you want to become a farrier? I really just wanted to learn how to shoe my own horse at home.

Where did you learn to become a farrier? An apprenticeship for 4 years.

What is your favorite part about being a farrier? Helping a horse to feel more comfortable and increase quality of performance.

Least favorite? Getting kicked!

Kip Bishop of KB Horseshoeing has been shoeing Connor Koch’s horses for 8 years. Kip cites one of his biggest accomplishments and proudest moments being part of Helluva Storm LR (“Taz”) winning his National Championship in Park.

It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am for Kip. He has been an invaluable asset behind the scenes and has played a huge part in my success over the years. Whether it was his day off or his schedule was packed, Kip always made the time to shoe our horses. I give so much credit to Kip for helping Taz unlock his full potential and become a happy, balanced horse. Taz would never have been able to perform at his best to become a National Champion Park horse if it wasn’t for Kip, and for that, I am so grateful. So, thank you, Kip. I am forever appreciative for all you’ve done for me and my horses!

What is the most important thing you would like your clients to know that helps you do your job? Keep up with everyday maintenance of your horse. Horse care 101… picking their their feet and applying hoof dressing, etc.

What is the most difficult part of being a farrier? Only seeing the horses for a limited amount of time.

Easiest?

Nothing about being a farrier is easy, but it is very rewarding.

What can clients do for their horses between visits to help hoof health?

Control moisture. It’s important for hooves to not be too moist, and if they are dry, apply hoof oil.

Also, try not to get information and advice from the internet.

What is the most common mistake people make when it comes to horses’ hooves? Missing their regularly scheduled appointment with the farrier and not keeping each horse on their individualized schedule. Every horse will be different and will require shorter intervals during different seasons.

Do you have any challenges with Connor’s horses? The transitions of shoeing back and forth from pasture to show ring.

How did you overcome those challenges? Patience and planning, along with making sure hooves are balanced.

LEADING THEIR WAY

The month of July, for anyone who shows Arabians, only means one thing—it’s almost time for Youth and Mid Summer Nationals in Oklahoma City. With giddy excitement, exhibitors and their Arabian horses come from all over the country to ride for the roses. At the OKC State Fair Park, drapes are hung, horses are clipped, and riders are ready to spend the next 10 days competing for a championship title and owning the theme of this year’s show … Leads The Way.

As ususal, the weather was insanely, hot but just add a fan and some water and everyone is ready to go! Across three arenas, classes ran morning, noon and night. Main ring performances—western, hunter, saddle seat and specialty—were held in the main Jim Norick Arena. Across the way, Performance Arena mainly held a variety of working western and halter classes, and Specialty Arena showcased the sport horse, dressage, and over fences classes, with equitation sprinkled throughout all three. It’s always amazing to walk into each different arena and see Arabian horses doing so many different disciplines, speaking to their versatility, from watching a reining pattern in one arena to watching a jumping course in another with only a one-minute walk in between.

Almost 900 horses came to compete in both the youth and adult classes. Some classes were big, with the largest definitely being the various hunter classes, and some were small, but the quality of the contenders never disappointed. Top notch horse and rider pairs filled every class, no doubt making it hard for the judges to pick their winners. One of the highlight classes was the new walk/trot ranch rail pleasure class. With 19 competitors, it was the largest 10 & under class of the show and also one of the cutest, because there’s not really anything more precious than big western hats on tiny, smiling children and tiny chinks going around on their horses. The first ever Walk/Trot Ranch Horse Rail Pleasure National Champions were Taya Pavlick and Hezas Sweet Dreams who were awarded their roses in an arena full of cheers from the stands, as well as the other competitors.

Some of the most competitive classes are Arabian and Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Equitation. These classes have some of the most beautiful and elegant riders in the Arabian industry. Every pattern is flawless, and each rider is close to perfection. It was a storybook ending in the purebred class when Sophie Yih won it on her horse Heiritage TRGR for the fifth year in a row. This being her final year, and it was exciting for everyone, including an emotional Sophie, sealing their youth Saddle Seat Equitation legacy with one last victory pass.

A big number of graduating seniors showed at Youth Nationals for their final time. The Senior Graduation ceremony at the end of the show celebrated them all with recognition of their scholastic achievements. It is with great anticipation that we will see some of these young adults next year in the amateur classes as they continue their journey with the Arabian horse.

When not showing, a plethora of activities were available to keep the kids busy and cool, from ice cream socials to scavenger hunts. For a nice break from the sticky outdoors, the go-to hangout was the air-conditioned Chill Box for coloring, games, or a stick horse station for the little ones. The dog race and dog costume contests were once again well-attended and always competitive. Roping their friends into dressing up, the kids and the dogs have fun trying to win, as well as mingling and making new friends.

A fun class for exhibitors is the It’s All Relative Western Pleasure Jackpot class. Consisting of two amateur riders from the same family, mother/daughter and brother/sister teams competed, with one member riding the first direction and the other the second direction. It’s a great way to include the whole family and compete for some money.

Another unique competing opportunity for the youth is the Mid Summer National hunter and western associations’ AHPA and AWPA amateur maturity classes. In these classes, exhibitors show and then stand up their untacked horses for inspection, and this year, the Half-Arabian AHPA Jackpot was won by 14 & under select rider Zadie Fenton and Dark Knight A. And for an example of what future mature riders can aspire to, look no further than to Brooke Pitassi-Barrett, who won both the big money purebred and Half-Arabian AWPA Jackpot classes on her horses On Demand and Moody Blue J respectively.

Youth and Mid Summer Nationals is a long show in a hot environment, but thanks to an incredible show staff, this event went on without a hitch, and the schedule ran so smoothly this year that there were adequate breaks between sessions for horses and humans alike. Also highly appreciated by all were the new color rose blankets for the adults which made a lot of people happy they were heard.

All in all, it was a fun show for the kids to see their friends again and compete with their horses at such a high level, and now that everyone is home and cooled off enough, one can bet they are already preparing to come back to do it all over again next year, because not much can come between them and their love of showing their Arabian horse.
