NEW X-RITE EXACT XP HELPS PACKAGING CONVERTERS ACCURATELY MEASURE COLOR ON FLEXIBLE FILM

ELIMINATES MEASUREMENT VARIATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH FLEXIBLE FILM TO HELP USERS BETTER CONTROL COLOR

X

-Rite Incorporated, a global leader in color science and technology, and its subsidiary Pantone LLC, announced the X-Rite eXact™ Xp, a new option in the company’s award-winning eXact spectrophotometer platform. The eXact Xp is designed to help package printers and converters more accurately measure color on flexible film materials. Printers, ink and premedia suppliers, and brands can use this new handheld device to better understand, control, and manage colors on flexible film materials across the entire packaging supply chain. Even the most sophisticated converters can find it challenging to measure color on flexible film substrates. For some types of films, the orientation of the measurement instrument relative to the film’s extrusion direction can impact results. With the eXact Xp, X-Rite has addressed this challenge, introducing special enhancements that help users accurately and consistently measure on a variety of film substrates, including lamination materials and base structures. “The costs of getting color wrong on packaging can

be significant,” says Chris Winczewski, Vice President of Product Marketing, X-Rite. “A packaging converter that measures color inconsistently runs the risk of customer rejections that result in time-consuming rework and waste. The new X-Rite eXact Xp addresses the unique challenges of working with film materials and can be used as part of an end-to-end color management process. With X-Rite eXact Xp for measurement, PantoneLIVE™ as a repository of reliable digital color standards and ColorCert®: X-Rite Edition for statistical process control, packaging converters can deliver new levels of color control and increased service for their clients.”

on display at drupa 2016, May 31 through June 10 at the Düsseldorf Fairgrounds in Hall 8b A23. The X-Rite eXact Xp will be available in May 2016 on a worldwide basis through X-Rite channels and directly from X-Rite. For more information visit www.xrite.com/eXact.

The X-Rite eXact Xp supports the measurement modes M0, M1, M2 and includes all of the same features as the other devices in the eXact Family of spectrophotometers, including X-Rite eXact Scan. It fully supports ISO color measurement standards and measurements are compatible with common measurement modes of the standard eXact on printed materials. The eXact Xp is also supported with existing eXact Family software and applications. The X-Rite eXact Xp will be

Kodak Intros New Model for Newspaper Printing

W

ith the opening of its new digital inkjet newspaper printing facility in the Channel Islands, UK today, Kodak is using its Prosper 6000P inkjet presses to bring a new approach to newspaper printing to the market. The Jersey and Guernsey is-

lands, now able to receive the Jersey Evening Post and the major UK national newspapers, are examples of communities where newspaper printing can be revived with the efficiencies provided by printing on Kodak’s high-speed inkjet versus traditional offset:

2 KODAK PROSPER 6000P presses and 4 Hunkeler Combi-solution Newspaper finishing lines at KP Services • Printing 35,000 newspapers each day • With presses running at speeds up to 1,000 feet or 300 meters per minute • Delivering 3,000 newspaper per hour Where offset had begun to limit how, where and when certain regions could receive the newspaper, Kodak’s created an approach using inkjet presses that, when extrapolated to similar areas, will revive the newspaper market in regions affected most by the pressures to print on demand, in shorter runs and efficiently as possible.

Xerox is Set to Reveal two New Inline Finishing Options for its Rialto 900 Inkjet Press at Drupa

V

isitors to Drupa, which starts 31 May, will see the Rialto with a dynamic perforator, enabling the creation of horizontal, vertical or t-section tear offs. It will also come with a second high-capacity stacker, enabling continuous operation so print providers can keep presses running while unloading the other stacker. Xerox Europe high-speed inkjet marketing manager Jo Oliphant said: “What these new features

are doing is really enhancing the capability of the product. The big thing about the Rialto is it is phenomenally productive, incredibly productive for its footprint. That is one of the things we are really pleased with. We have been trying to think of other machines as productive per square meter but we couldn’t think of any.” The perforator should allow Xerox to open up new direct mail and

promotional markets. The new features will have their first showing at Drupa and afterwards Xerox will announce when they will become available to the market. The Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press costs around £614,000, (PrintWeek). It is a roll-to-sheet duplex colour press with a max speed of 320 A4ppm and a monthly volume of 1.5m-5m A4 impressions. Its stock weight ranges from 60-160gsm and it uses water-based pigment ink. It is built by Impika in France and was the first press to be jointly developed since Xerox acquired Impika in 2013. At Drupa Xerox will also show for the first time its new B3-plus format sheetfed press, the Brenva, and the Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press.

HP Inc. Inspires Print Providers to Reinvent their Possibilities at Drupa 2016

Company unveils HP PrintOS, a cloud-based, mobile platform that simplifies and automates print production management

HP Inc. announced that it will exhibit the industry’s broadest portfolio of digital printing solutions at drupa 2016, including new advancements that demonstrate how HP digital print technology enables print service providers (PSPs) to reinvent their possibilities. The company also unveiled HP PrintOS, a cloud-based operating system that reinvents how customers manage print production. The revolutionary new platform will make its worldwide debut at drupa 2016. For the first time in drupa history, the HP Graphics Solutions Business is hosting the tradeshow’s largest exhibit in hall 17 and the world’s biggest digital printing showcase for the eleven day event. In keeping with the evolving landscape of drupa, HP will display its latest technology for the general commercial printing segment, in addition to new hardware and solutions for labels and packaging, large-format and sign and display application areas. “HP is bringing the full power of our vast portfolio of digital print-

15

ing solutions to drupa 2016, featuring breakthrough innovations,” said Rob Le Bras-Brown, global head of print marketing, HP Inc. “With today’s introduction of HP PrintOS and more ground-breaking pre-drupa announcements to come, HP is following through on our promise to ‘keep reinventing’ with advancements across application segments that truly enable our customers to reinvent their possibilities.” Simplifying and automating print production management An open, secure and integrated platform for print production management, PrintOS is a cloudbased operating system ideal for PSPs of all segments and sizes for use with HP Indigo, PageWide Web Press, Scitex and Latex digital printing technology. Featuring a suite of intuitive webbased and mobile applications, PrintOS helps simplify and automate print production, enabling customers to start printing jobs, faster. Additionally, cloud connectivity allows customers to monitor print status remotely as well as track and improve production performance over time. “We run a multi-shift, multi-press operation at ProCo, yet we have not previously had a window into the production performance of our digital operation,” said Graeme Parry, production director, ProCo. “PrintOS offers anytime, anywhere access, enabling more visibility than ever into our business. Not only are we using PrintOS to drive better print performance, but it’s also helping raise the bar of our staff, empowering operators with the right tools to better oversee production. It’s fantastic.” Among others, PrintOS applications include: • Box, a tool simplifying job onboarding through non-automated channels like email and file transfer services. Often, a disproportionate amount of time and effort

are invested in handling jobs prior to production. By standardizing processes, Box reduces upfront overhead, increasing capacity and improving profitability. • Site Flow, which combines automated order submission, pre-press and shop floor management capabilities to address the needs of PSPs serving the business-to-business and business-to-business-to-consumer markets. HP Financial Services, IT investment solutions and financing provider for HP Inc., can help customers gain easier and faster access to innovative digital printing technology. Customers have the flexibility to choose how they acquire and pay for an HP PrintOS solution, with IT investment options that can be customized across HP Inc.’s product portfolio, based on business needs.

Even More Profitable Production of Short runs Using The latest Generation of Heidelberg Anicolor Technology New Anicolor 2 at drupa 2016 for the Speedmaster XL 75 for greater flexibility and speed during production

What

do commercial and packaging printers have in common? Both need to optimize their processes so they can deal with increasingly shorter production runs and frequent order changes involving different materials while still remaining profitable. While the CMYK color model is used for printing advertisements, lots of spot colors are customary when printing packaging and labels. This is where the Anicolor short inking technology from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG comes in, offering an optimum solution package for the flexible production of short runs. The advantages can be summarized with the formula 90-50-50: Around 90 percent less waste thanks to fast and constant inking. It takes just 20 to 30 start-up sheets to reach the correct ink levels for a new order. The result is a 50 percent reduction in setup times combined with a 50 percent increase in productivity.

This is achieved with three innovations. - The first is the Anicolor Booster. This can be activated at the push of a button on the Prinect Press Center and permits a wider range of inks thanks to an improved setting range for ink density on different printing stocks. Up to 15 minutes can be saved here by not having to change the screen roller. - The second is a faster washup program that provides for faster ink changes and therefore shorter setup times thanks to 9,000 revolutions per hour instead of the previous 7,000. - The third is a function allowing the operator to choose between “standard”, “short”, or even “none” for the ink shut-off time, depending on the color assignment from one job to the next. At drupa 2016, the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 will be presented at the IST stand in Hall 2, right in the passage to Heidelberg in Hall 1.

Heidelberg will be presenting the next generation of Anicolor technology at drupa 2016 with Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 for greater flexibility, speed and productivity.

The weekly Verdigris blog by Laurel Brunner

W

e’re all familiar with the annual shindig the World Economic Forum (WEF) hosts at Davos in Switzerland. It combines spectacular scenery with spectacular visions for our collective economic future. But we are probably less aware of the regular white papers the WEF puts out. One of their latest efforts is part of Project Mainstream, a collaboration between the WEF, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the McKinsey Centre for Business and Environment. Project Mainstream’s objective is to remove bottlenecks in processes, so that we can all transition to a circular economy. The group’s recent white paper deals with paper. The addition of ink to paper causes difficulties with current recycling models. It is unrealistic to expect people to sort papers according to how they are inked prior to recycling them. But the addition of chemicals to paper impedes its reuse, because removing them damages the fibre, which constrains its use in future applications. There are apparently over 6,000 chemical compounds used in printing inks, so this is a big problem. Its

scale, plus trends in the graphic arts, suggest that recycling processes have to change. They must be able to handle a constantly varying combination of inks and chemicals, so that the fibre can be reused. This is especially important for digital printing papers, inks and toners, which use often quite complex chemical formulations. In the sign and display market for example, some applications require extreme scratch resistance and durability. Desirable application characteristics may severe restrict the print’s recyclability, once it reaches end of life. What is needed is recycling processes that support the diversity of printing technologies, inks and substrates, including digital. Recycling in the graphics industry needs a new approach, one that supports the chemical and substrate diversity of modern print. The WEF’s white paper suggests that print buyers and printing companies should be “Riding the Fibre”.

health food, but it’s meant to convey the perspective of paper fibres. The WEF asks people to consider print investment decisions in a series of don’ts, such as “don’t attach that to me or I’ll be thrown away” and “don’t attach that to me - getting rid of it might consume a lot of energy”. The paper provides guidelines so that we can consider substrates, inks, coatings, primers and production methods, with an eye to how effectively paper based print media projects can be recycled. The problem with all of this is that it assumes people will bother to learn about recycling processes and make decisions accordingly. It also assumes that recycling processes are the same in every region, and that companies and their customers have control. This is one of the important lessons we have learnt about sustainability control of every stage in the process is impossible for most of us. Still, little by little we move forward.

Our ultimate goal is to help mobilise manufacturers, printers, print buyers and publishers to raise awareness of print’s sustainability. Establishing the facts about print and the environment is vital to achieving this. Why Verdigris? Founded in 2008 by Laurel Brunner of graphic arts research group Digital Dots, Verdigris exists to counter the myths and misconceptions that have proliferated about the printing industry’s negative impact on the environment. To the uninformed, print is about shrinking forests, greasy ink and stinking landfills. “Think before printing” has become a convenient, if misguided, badge for any organisation seeking to demonstrate its environmental credentials. While some of this may once have been true, the printing has made huge improvements in its environmental impact. Today print is an industry firmly committed to sustainability and with a positive story to tell. Verdigris exists to help the industry tell that story. What the Project do Verdigris is about sharing information and opinion to help

19

those involved in communications understand and evaluate the respective carbon footprints of different media, particularly print. We place the emphasis on gathering empirical data which we then distribute free of charge to trade publishers, print service providers and end users around the globe. Verdigris content development is independently managed by people who know and understand print technology. In this way we aim to create a dialogue with different markets worldwide, raising and discussing environmental issues at a local level, providing market research and articles, and promoting print businesses that are following best practice. At the same time we are building a reputation as a reliable source for authoritative information and comment on the environmental aspects of print production. This gives us access to a growing number of international platforms from which we can make the case for print as a sustainable medium. At drupa 2012, for example, our association with drupa (a founder member of Verdigris) helped place sustainability high on the show agenda, and with EcoPrint Europe recently joining as a associate supporter a similar emphasis can be expected in Berlin in September. We are also a major contributor to the development of ISO 16759, the emerging standard for calculating the carbon footprint of print media products. Verdigris founder Laurel Brunner is the convenor of ISO Working Group 11, which is responsible for standards related to the environmental impact of

How the Project do it Verdigris helps combine the resources of manufacturers, industry associations, commentators and media to create a source of authoritative information and about the sustainability of print. Canon shows leadership in continuous feed inkjet for production print at Drupa 2016

A

t drupa 2016, Canon, world-leader in imaging solutions, will look to impress visitors with the live, industrial-scale production of finished products on end-to-end solutions. Cementing its position as a leading developer of continuous feed inkjet technologies for production print, Canon will show-case a complete line-up of high performance presses for business communications, publishing and commercial print applications. The presses on the stand (Hall 8a, Stand B50) will include the Océ ImageStream 2400 and two lines of the newly announced

Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma (see separate press release) featuring high-end configurations for specific market segments. The ImageStream 2400 continuous feed inkjet press will be exhibited for the first time at an open exhibition. The press is now shipping commercially and has been successfully installed with customers across Europe. The first print service provider to install the device was Totem, the largest digital printing house in Poland. Specialising in short-run book production, Totem needed digital technology that would enable them to meet the grow-

ing demand for fast turnaround of very short, high quality runs, allowing their customers to offer a greater range of titles while retaining little or no stock. Michał Rejnowski, CEO and owner of Totem.com.pl comments: “We looked carefully at a number of options and decided to invest in the ImageStream 2400 because of its unique ability to print at high quality on standard offset coated stock at high speed. The device has certainly met our expectations in terms of print quality and has allowed us to speed up our delivery process and be more flexible in production.”

Printing in Egypt

Although Egypt has a history of more than 6000 years, Printing was first introduced in Egypt when the French headed by Napoleon Bonaparte, came during the French occupation in Egypt (1798 to 1801). Bonaparte brought with him three printing presses, in order to use them in printing all the documents needed for his army, and for the communication with the Egyptian people. These presses were far superior in speed, efficiency and quality than the nearest presses used in Istanbul. Unfortunately, only three years later Napoleon left Egypt taking with him the three presses back to France. The first printing house in Egypt after that was the General Organization for Government Printing Offices Al Amiria, which was established more than 196 years. First named as the Boulaq Printing Press, it was established in 1820 in the era of El-Wali Mohamed Ali Basha. After the revolution, in 1952, a republican decree was issued to establish it to be affiliated to the Ministry of Industry. The Al Amiria was moved from its location into its present location at Imbab in 1973 with a new building on a 35000 square meters. The first newspaper in Egypt and the Middle East, named “El Wakaea El Masreya” was printed in the Organization in 1828, headed by its editor in chief Sheikh Mohamed Abdo. Today Al Amiria has 3000 employees, consuming more than 40 000 tons of paper and more than 55 000 tons of inks and 35000 plates, to print on 50 different presses, producing an annual capacity of 750 000 B1 sheets printed on both sides. Some of its printed Products are:The Holy Q’uran - The Official Newspapers of Egypt “El-Gareeda El-Rasmia” and “El-Wakaea El-Massria”. In addition to Governmental

23

publications, Scholastic books and various types of calendars & agendas, envelopes and boxes and Law books. The first print education was introduced in Egypt 177 years ago, in 1839, where again El-Wali Mohamed Ali Basha established the Applied Arts School to serve the Egyptian army at that time. In 1953 it was named as the Faculty of Applied Arts, which later in 1975 joined Helwan University to be one of its 22 different faculties. The Faculty was always one of the pioneers in Egypt and the region, where in 1956 the Faculty accepted girl students for the first time, and in 1968 the post graduate studies started, with the first Masters degree in 1971 and the first PhD in 1977. Today at its Printing Publishing and Packaging Department, one of its 14 departments, there’re more than 160 students in the four years, studying all subjects related to the three industries, and the graduates are working in all the public and private sectors’ companies. Egypt also is one of the few countries in the region and continent which has its own Banknote printing facilities owned by the Central Bank of Egypt, which is considered as one of the oldest printing houses in the Middle East & Africa, established back in 1967, to print the Egyptian Banknotes locally for the first time, depending on local technical people. The Printing House location was chosen beside the Giza Pyramids, and it was built to be an Architectural Masterpiece, designed as the Sphinx shape (its body being the production building & its face being the management building). The printing house also prints secured documents such as Passports, education certificates and banks’ checks, all with the latest state of the art security printing technologies. Egypt has its own Chamber of

printing and packaging industries, which was established in 1969. The chamber has now over 4500 members, offering a wide range of services to them, from technical training through its training branch PETRA, troubleshooting help, to medical, social and consultation services. Today there are nearly 4700 printing establishments in Egypt, most of them (about 75 %) in the capital city, Cairo, serving a population of more than ninety million. The printers are categorized as commercial, packaging and publication (newspaper) printers, the majority being commercial. The packaging industry is developing rapidly with an annual growth rate of 18%.
