Women And Play
Location : Davangere, India
Typology: Sports Complex for women & children
Type: Individual academic thesis work
Year: 2023
Studio Mentors: Bakul Jani I Meera Vasudev I Archita Bandyopadhyay I Smruti Balvalli
The intent of women and play is to provide a safe and inclusive space for women of all ages to participate in sports and physical activity. The space is designed to promote physical and mental well-being, foster community and social connections, and empower women to pursue their passions and develop their skills in a supportive environment.
Thesis Argument:
To understand and reinvent the co-existence of existing and future ideas of play spaces for women and children, and to explore the following questions
• How can architecture and design be used to create safe and inclusive spaces for women to participate in sports?
• How can play spaces become a part of the community?
• What role can community engagement and participation play in the design of sports facilities for women?

CONTEXT PLAN
The site is located in Davanagere, India, near Kunduvada Lake, which forms a natural edge on one side.
The lake currently offers opportunities for walking, cycling, and boating, activities that can be further extended onto the site.
Its strategic location makes it an ideal setting, as it is surrounded by diverse typologies, which includes homes, colleges, schools, and nurseries, that foster a vibrant and dynamic community.

The project focuses on designing a safe space for women to relax, sit, chill, and play after their everyday activities.Furthermore by encouraging women and children in sports participation, physical health, social engagement, and a sense of community.
Urjasvini is not just about building a sports center, but also about building a community of women who can inspire and support each other. I believe that by working together, we can create a brighter future for women in sports, and in turn, for our society as a whole. It is a callto action to support and encourage women in sports and to work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive world for all.

On regular days, they offer spaces for relaxation, social gatherings, and quiet observation, while during sports events, they transform into vibrant viewing areas, interactive zones, and communal hubs, enriching the experience.

PURPOSE

A safe space designed for women to relax, sit, chill, and play after their everyday activities.
Furthermore by encouraging women and children in sports participation, physical health, social engagement, and a sense of community.

Repurposing abandoned fort
Location : Bangalore, India
Typology: Adaptive Reuse
Type: Individual academic work
Year: 2021
Studio Mentors: Dinesh Rao I Suman Paul I Bikramjit Chakraborty I Hiranmayee S
This exploration of the Chikkajala Fort precinct delves into its historical layers to understand its significance while reinterpreting its role in contemporary times through spatial configuration.
The approach adheres to the principles of Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring a sensitive and responsible intervention. By deciphering the site’s historical narrative, the design aims to reinstate its relevance while integrating new functions.
The final intervention is a comprehensive architectural expression— public in nature, respecting the existing built layers, and creating a seamless dialogue between heritage and modernity.
SITE PLAN

The site is located within Chikkajala Fort, a historic structure near Bengaluru, Karnataka, believed to date back to the Chola or Vijayanagara period. The fort is a testament to the region’s architectural heritage and, has features of traditional stone walls and gateways.

ABSTRACT
Modulating and demodulating the existing site to retain its history, culture, context, and also its association and interaction with its people. The project relooks into the needs of the community and incorporates them on the site by being versatile in nature.
The site had a challenging task which had a layer of built entity within the site precinct or in proximity which bears certain significance not only as a layer of history but more it’s socio-cultural association. Every such association bears a specific meaning which gets transformed over the flow of time.
This association is tackled by creating a serial vision where the elements repeat periodically which enhances the user experience at the site by changing volumes and spaces that define the hierarchy of the spatial configuration.

This place has history. It deserves a new purpose.

Developed from the built spaces of linear pattern around the kalyani forming a centralized organisation.
This fort has seen so much. Rebuilding it will bring life back, just like before.

As cities and people slowly undergo a process of alienation, our role is to repurpose spaces and bring them back to the community for a better cause. Novel urban inserts like pavilions seem to be a way forward.
A pavilion—a community space—can be shared equally by everyone in these transforming urban settings, acting as a new refuge, an inspiring and calming breather!
This pavilion caters to various urban activities; where it can become a place to relax and to wander in, a small community space for to gather, discuss and even loiter —a small yet meaningful space that brings people together.
