DECEMBER AT CHILDREN S RESEARCH CENTER Children s Research Center-Turkey is at Darüþþafaka Primary School The first five week application of the Children s Research Program for the academic year of 2011-2012 has been completed by the Children Research Center, the program was also conducted last year with the 5th grade students. In the first three weeks of the program, children studied on the questions What is research? , Who is a researcher? , Have you ever done a research? , What is the thing you are most curious about? through some activities. An astronomer, Büþra Gürbak; the vice-principal of the 4th grade, Neþe Eþer; the vice-principal of the 5th grade, Demir Sipahi; the PYP and the projects coordinator, Meltem Ceylan Alibeyoðlu participated in the activities as observers to the program conducted by the teachers of the 5th grade and Derya Þahhüseyinoðlu, Ph.D.

All children enjoy playing games. Playing games is almost more important than eating and sleeping to them. They imagine, explore, think, learn and have fun while playing. 04

How can they say no to experience a new journey? Flying paper planes, sailing paper boats, building towers with wooden blocks, playing marbles, skipping, racing are they games that children explore more about themselves. Old or young, everybody learn more about themselves while
playing. In the games, the feelings and thoughts are plain and clear. Children meet new friends, express their likes and dislikes and play parts as competitors or the leader. They face their emotions, like jealousy, competition, anger, sadness and loneliness, and get stronger. All children are different from each other. They preferences, interests may be different but when the game begins, they all act together. They work together to find solutions to the problems or challenges they face during the games. They develop new perspectives and their thinking skills through games.
Creating opportunities for them to play games at home, in the park or the classroom is very important. With every game, children begin to experience something new and take one more step to the future with their endless energy and enthusiasm. Games are one the most important tools for children to construct their own insights towards the life. How about using your imagination and discovering your emotions? You can play this game with a group. First decide who will be the optimists and who will be the pessimists in the group. Then begin telling a story by saying one sentence and develop the story by adding an optimist or pessimist idea in turn.
For example you can begin the story by imagining that you are in deserted island. Pessimist: We have nothing to eat. Optimist: There are lots of berries in the bushes, we can collect them. Pessimist: We can t collect them easily, there are thorns on them. Optimist: We can collect leaves from other plants and use them as gloves.
You can continue the story as in the example. You are out if you cannot think of anything to add.
Other Rules: After you complete the story you can reuse it by changing the roles between the optimists and pessimists.

MYSTERIOUS SQUARE
The aim of the game is to guess the word in the mystery square (chosen by the other pair) Whilst keeping the number of questions asked as low as possible. Answers given can only be YES , NO , or I CAN T ANSWER THAT. An answer of I can t answer that isn t counted in the total of questions asked. An incorrect guess is considered to be a question and is counted as such. Students can t ask location-based questions e.g. they can t ask is it in the top three row? The right half of the grid etc) You can play this game by these cards.

FUTURISTIC GLIDER
Materials: Scissors
Ruler
Paper
Tape
Straw
How to do? 1. Cut out 3 pieces of rectangles from the paper. They should be 2 cm in width and 10 cm in length. 2. Tape two of these rectangles together to have a 20 cm length strip. By taping the ends of this strip create the first circle.
4. Stick a circle to each end of the straw. Try to tape them parallel to each other. 5. Fly your glider with the small circle at the front.
You can make better flights with exercise. You can also design different models and try flying them.
