THIS MONTH AT CHILDREN'S RESEARCH CENTER Marbles on the Move Workshop Activity This month, we met with children and their teachers for our workshop activity entitled Marbles on the Move . With trainers from Middle East Technical University s Science, and Mathematics Departments, we conducted two workshop activities at Gülen Gözler Study Center and Mutlu Yaþam College. Children who participated in the activities explored the rules of physics, designed a mechanism by experimenting. They had so much fun while they are watching their designs work. We are looking forward to meeting them again with new workshop activities.

Children'sResearch Program In Darussafaka Schools Is Going On ChildrenÂ’s Research Program in Darussafaka Schools is going on. Children participating in the program has finished collecting data and started the analysis on the research topic they chose from the fields of science like Anthropology, Biology, Physics, Paleontology, Geology, Psychology and Chemistry. At this enjoyable step of the research process, they are comparing data, trying to infer and reach conclusions. Children's Research Center-Turkey is helping them and supporting their efforts in every way and share their excitement.

COVER STORY THE ADVENTURE OF ART AND SCIENCE Have you ever thought that artists and scientists have something in common? When we think about it, the first thing we realize is that they have creativity and a high level of imagination. Harmony, intuition, sensibility, curiosity and ambition, solving problems in unique ways, trying again and again and creating new products are also their common traits. Scientists observe, imagine and think about details, and explain the unknown. Artists are also the same. They want to realize what they dream and feel, and reveal the beauties of the nature. In fact, although they seem to be different, these two fields complete and support each other. So, who has the characteristics to be both an artist and a scientist most? Children, of courseÂ… Why? They are good observers. They always want to identify the things they see and explain their meanings. They imagine, and they do research, experiment, draw, color and shape to make their thoughts and dreams real. They are also ambitious and curious. So, what is the best way to provide them with opportunities to enrich their emotional world like an artist and question like a scientist? A trip to nature can be a good start. In such a journey, children can observe birds, bees, ants, frogs and earthworms. They carefully examine the earth, stones, rocks, sand, water,

tree barks, leaves, flowers, fruits and their seed. They can take notes and draw sketches of these on their notepads. All sketches, drawings, colors on a paper are good ways to realize and remember the details of the item they observe because they also explore many interesting and surprising details while drawing. Just like a good artist or a good scientist do.
All sketches, drawings, colors on a paper are good ways to realize and remember the details of the item they observe because they also explore many interesting and surprising details while drawing. Just like a good artist or a good scientist do. Simple and fun ideas can turn into new and unique products. For example,
of their intellectual skills in these areas. (Kutu içerisinde olacak) Visiting an art gallery, going to concerts or plays, dancing, sculpting or thinking about these artistic products will help children to improve their feelings and perception and start exploring and thinking.
It is important to help children to have art in their lives and provide them with opportunities to combine art and science, and develop both of their intellectual skills in these areas. designing a cartoon character using a ball can be fun. They can think What if this ball has different faces, outfits or tools? After imagining this new character they can begin sketching, drawing, coloring and creating a story about it. They can create a comic book or cartoon series using this character. Just like many of the artists, cartoonists, writers and scriptwriters. It is important to help children to have art in their lives and provide them with opportunities to combine art and science, and develop both
In this sense, isn t it possible for all children to be like Leonardo Da Vinci, who was not only the architect, engineer and inventor of the Renaissance but also the musician, sculptor and the artist?

FOR CHILDREN ROCKS How about being an explorer by collection rocks? You can find rocks in the environment with different shapes and color. Many of these may have rounded edges. Look for some of the interesting ones and examine them. Classify them into groups according to their shape and color. Now think about these:
Why do they differ in shape? Why do they differ in color?
Try to examine their hardness by knocking them together? Try to classify them according to their hardness. You can also make an artistic activity after you research. Try to imagine the journey of one them, where and how did it come to the place you find it? Try writing a story about it. You can draw pictures and color them for your story. You can paint and decorate the stone you choose.

LetÂ’s do and experiment with the rocks you find! What you need:
Rocks and Stones
Cardboard
Ruler
Colorful Pencils
Paper or a Notepad
Stopwatch or a Clock
Pick six different rocks similar to each other in weight and size. These can be rounded, flat or in other shapes. Build a ramp using the cardboard. Its height should be 50 cm. Try to guess which one will travel faster down on the ramp. Write your guess on your notepad. Try to guess which one will travel the longest distance when you roll them down on the ramp. Write your guess on your notepad. Mark the one you choose using you pencils. Now let all the rocks roll down the ramp and record their travelling duration and distance. Are your predictions correct? Compare the travelling durations and distances of the rocks. Are there any differences? Why do you think that is? Try your experiments with rocks of different size and weight. After recording your observations and measurements, compare the data you collected with your previous experiment. What the differences? Think about the reasons of the difference.

Let s Make Music Instruments with rocks! It is not as difficult to make a music instrument as you think. You can easily make you own unique music instrument by using jars, plastic bottles, cardboard or wooden boxes or any other different things. You put rocks and stones of different sizes in them and make music by shaking them. You can create your own music by knocking the rocks together.
How will it sound if you use rock of same size? Try and listen. How will it sound if you put different rocks in size in jars or containers? Try and listen. You can also use different material and try creating new sounds.

Let s Play Hopscotch with rocks! Hopscotch is a great game you can play wherever you can find a flat surface. And there are a lot variations of this game. How about creating your own hopscotch game? Think about using different geometrical shapes for the course. Make some designs and draw them on a paper. Choose the most interesting and fun one. Find a rock or a stone to use it for the game. You can also use the one that you painted and decorated for the first activity above. Now you can play your new hopscotch game with friends.
