An IPM Approach to Controlling Leafminers. Leafminers, liriomyza sp. feed within leaves or needles and produce damage that looks like meandering tunnels (mines). Although leafminers rarely pose a threat to a healthy plant, the damage they cause is very visible. Monitoring using Blue or Yellow Sticky Traps (page 32) is the first step in managing leafminers. These traps will capture the adults and alert you to when eggs are being laid so you can be prepared to treat for the emergence of the larval stage. Regular inspection of the trap is essential to the timing of interventions. When populations reach an unacceptable level we recommend using Spinosad (Monterey Garden Insect Spray (page 51) or Entrust WP (see on our website) as a knockdown spray for the larvae.
