FROM

THE

FOUNDER

It’s hard to believe that November 2015 marks 20 years of Arbor. Looking back, I’m astonished that so much time has passed since we first turned a love for riding, and confidence that we could offer something fresh, into our first board. The only way I get my head around the years is knowing that we never slowed our pursuit of craftsmanship, commitment to the environment, and dedication to the good times that got us here in the first place. For us, it’s been a non-stop journey into shape, material, art, and life lived in the pursuit of skating and snowboarding. The funny thing is that I feel like we’re just getting started. So we don’t plan to stop for long and reminisce. The future looms large and this 20-year offering represents where the Arbor Collective is heading: a direction defined by a two-decade long partnership with riders, artists, distributors, dealers, reps, suppliers, media, and our larger in-house crew. Many have been part of Arbor through the years, and all have added to what we are today.

NOT JUST PLANTING TREES, REBUILDING FORESTS WITH EVERY SALE. Photo | Nate Shute

SINCE

DAY

ONE

The Arbor Collective is a crew of friends with a range of approaches to what, why, and where to ride. Tying these diverse perspectives together is a shared respect for the environment. That connection is a huge part of why Arbor was founded, and continues to be a driving force at the brand. Since day one, we’ve donated a portion of everything sold to groups that protect and restore forests, and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. This is our Returning Roots program. The effort has been centered on the Koa highlands of Hawaii. We see this as the best way to give back to the planet and culture that gave us riding in the first place. The native Hawaiians invented surfing as much as 1,000 years ago, on boards made from Koa wood. If you surf mountains, sidewalks, or swell - the Hawaiians get a nod of gratitude. The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative is our main Returning Roots partner today. This group is not just planting trees - they are rebuilding forests. By Spring 2015, they will have planted over 300,000 Koa trees on 800 acres of former forestland, with a full range of native understory plants to complete the ecosystem. The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative is helping Arbor to do our part in the restoration and protection of forests, while we strike an important balance with our use of sustainably sourced wood materials.

THE TEAM From the spines of Valdez, to the varied terrain of Jackson Hole, and the frozen city scape of Quebec, snowboarding evolves from the terrain in which it takes place, and the result is an activity whose personalities are as varied as its settings. Arbor Snowboards’ team spans the gap from heritage to progression, and freestyle to freeride. We couldn’t think of a better group of individuals to represent not only the current state of snowboarding, but also the current state of Arbor Snowboards.

IGUCHI

If you could extract snowboarding’s soul, and distill it in a protected region of the Teton Mountains, you would end up with a substance of distinction and class. You would end up with Bryan Iguchi. Rising to fame in the early 90’s, Bryan first received accolades for his classic style embodied by shifty backside 180’s and characterized by unmistakably frozen denim. Decades later, Bryan has matured into what is possibly the most well respected and smoothest spirit in snowboarding. Few have stood the test of time with as much commitment and dedication as Guch, and we couldn’t be more stoked to move into the next chapter as partners.

CURTIS

WOODMAN

Curtis is a powder hound whose life revolves around surfing the earth 24/7/365. This salty surfer dog calls Lake Tahoe home and logs more days out of bounds than a golf ball in a senior golf league. A veteran of the Lake Tahoe battlefield, Curtis has been putting out quality video parts for over a decade with notable appearances in the Neoproto and Think Thank filmographies. Curtis’ style pairs a looseness reminiscent of surfing’s past, with a technical and knowledgeable approach to the mountains that can only be learned through a tenure of experience.

MARK

CARTER

Few men can flip calves and ride horses as gracefully as they can flip tricks and ride mountains. This cowboy-snowboarder half-breed is a man’s man, and you do not want to mess with him. One time, while herding cattle on his ranch in Ten Sleep, Wyoming, Carter kicked an unruly horse in the chin. The descendants of that horse are known today as giraffes. If you don’t believe me, just look in Samuel L. Jackson’s phone, where Mark Carter’s number can be found under the contact, Bad Mother... Carter’s own personal brand (pun intended) of reckless but calculated snowboarding has landed him on the podium of prestigious events such as the North Face Masters and the Natural Selection. We believe this is only the beginning for Carter, and that he’s yet to leave his Mark on snowboarding.

FRANK

APRIL

Frank has arrest warrants out in three provinces for a killing spree that started in the early 2000’s and continues to this day. Until the Déjà Vu videos brought Frank’s rail slaying prowess to national attention, he flew mostly under the radar, documenting his urban assault in Quebec’s local Brother’s Factory films. After winning an X-Games gold medal in 2013, Frank went into hiding, filming a slew of unreleased footage during the 2013-14 season. Frank plans on turning himself in in the Fall of 2016 when he releases incriminating footage of his world-wide rail terrorizing massacre in Déjà Vu 2. We’re happy to welcome this convict to the team and will do whatever is possible to keep him on the streets, keeping the rail population in check.

BRANDON

HAMMID

Before becoming a professional snowboarder, Brandon Hammid a.k.a. “Buffmoose” spent 6 years in the Air Force. Certain occurrences, like the time he almost blew up Ogden, UT, with a truck full of poorly packed explosives, might have hindered his ascent to military greatness, but none of that stopped him from quickly rising to the elite ranks of jibbers within professional snowboarding. A Utah native and Brighton local, Buffmoose now spends his days dropping hammers with the same technical precision he once applied to building bombs… which might not be a bad thing considering that the city of Ogden is still standing.

SCOTTY

VINE

Scotty is one imaginative human being. He always seems to have one foot grounded in reality and one foot out. It’s no surprise that he treats his snowboarding the same way. Last season, a leading prosthetics company even offered him a sponsorship after hearing that he landed the world’s first one footed double backflip! The ensuing conversation was embarrassing for both parties and that story may or may not be true. That occurrence, however, is just a footnote in Scotty’s extensive career that includes landing on the cover of multiple magazines, becoming one of the most viewed riders on the web, and earning prestigious awards such as Snowboarder Magazine’s Superpark Standout.

MARIE_FRANCE

ROY

Marie-France Roy has been pushing the limits of women’s backcountry freeriding and freestyle for years. With standout video parts in a plethora of influential snowboard films, Marie has solidified her spot among the most accomplished female riders in the field. Both on and off the hill, Marie’s synergies with Arbor are undeniable. Beyond her riding accomplishments, Marie is also one of the most influential advocates for sustainability and environmentalism in action sports. Her ethos, passion and experience bring unparalleled direction and inspiration to the Arbor team.

The 2016 Arbor Snowboards line is our most comprehensive collection to date. Among many other highlights, look for a range of new models and sizes, five new series built around the System Camber design, and three new artist collaborations. After 20 years of building snowboards, we’re proud that the 2016 collection stays true to our roots, while exploring the limitless nature of design, the power of alliance, and the fun still built into every turn. Pg . 31

The System is a design platform that delivers a cleaner ride without forfeiting edge performance. The System improves both rocker and camber shapes, without hybridizing the two together, which we think sacrifices the inherent benefits of each. The System design eliminates the leverage required to release and re-engage a snowboard’s outside contact points, while creating a highly effective, more direct connection to the snow.

Arbor now offers two full lines of its System design:

The System Rocker design

The System Camber

provides a surfy ride,

design offers a poppy

with natural float and

ride with crisp, fully

cleaner tracking.

engaged performance.

Each is the result of blending Grip Tech with a Parabolic Profile.

GRIP TECH

Grip Tech is a tri-radial sidecut design that is not “blended.” Natural shaping intersections, that in the past were eliminated, have been transformed into heel-and-toe contact points that provide a direct, more ergonomic way to grip the snow when additional control is needed. The extra contacts also form pivot zones that make turning easier and more natural. Grip Tech effectively moves a board’s primary interface with the snow underfoot, allowing us to deliver designs that don’t lose performance as we lift leading sections of the effective edge from the snow for a less grabby ride. Those designs include rocker, or camber with our new Uprise Fenders.

Uprise Fenders pull the outside contact zones off the snow with angled 3º risers on all System Camber designs.

PA R A B O L I C P R O F I L I N G The System utilizes rocker and camber profiles created using the parabolic arc, which progressively reduces the amount of rocker or camber toward the tip and tail of a snowboard, creating nice low profiles. On our System Rocker designs, this ensures that the outside contact points are close enough to the snow to engage when maximum performance is required - higher speeds, fully loaded turns, and bigger landings. On System Camber designs, this guarantees that the outside contact points do not dig too far into the snow, creating a cleaner, less catchy performance that makes it easier to turn, spin, and ride fast.

Pg . 33

P O W E R P LY T O P S Almost all Arbor Snowboards are made with a sustainably sourced wood or Bamboo topsheet. We call this construction a Power Ply. The natural grain creates the style we’ve been known for since we launched twenty years ago. Less well recognized is how the technology improves the strength, durability, and return of our snowboards. The Power Ply works like an added layer of fiberglass. During construction, the natural wood or bamboo fibers are turned into a composite layer inside the board; but the process takes time. Raw timber must first be soaked so that it can be sliced or “veneered” into sheets, which are assembled into “faces,” then backed with a special fleece material, precision sanded, and pre-laminated to a protective foil, made in part from natural caster oil. The finished topsheet is at last ready to be built into a snowboard. In the end, the process makes Arbor Power Ply deigns the most labor intensive snowboards on the market. The resulting performance, board life, and finish quality are worth the extra effort, in addition to the reduction in our reliance on man made glues, coatings, and composites.

TIP PROFILES How a board approaches terrain is critical, so a huge effort goes into our tip profiles. We match board shapes with these profiles in order to create designs for specific terrain and riding styles.

DRAFT T R U E -T W I N | S O F T F L E X | I N T E R M E D I AT E T O A D VA N C E D

At times it can be the wind beneath your skirt or a prologue to military conflict, but here and now the Draft is a stair slapping, jib bonking, muffin buttering snowboard whose spirit animal is so rowdy, you may need a bomb shelter to cope with its explosive aura. You read that right pretty boy, now sign up for the Draft like the man you are and start your conquest against each and every rail that strays into your unforgiving path. RELAPSE T R U E -T W I N | M E D I U M - S O F T F L E X | I N T E R M E D I AT E T O A D VA N C E D

Before instagrams, there were epigrams; saying such as, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” And before a variety of hybrid technologies bombarded and confused the common snowboarder, there was classic camber. The Relapse is an ode to our roots; the perfect board for a rider looking for traditional snap, turning and stability in a twin freestyle snowboard. There are those who prefer a straightforward pepperoni pizza when confronted with a supermarket freezer packed with artisanal gluten-free flatbreads; and for those, we provide the Relapse.

The Zygote Twin is a non-symmetrical twin, a fusion of true-twin on-snow geometry with distinct tip and tail outlines that pay homage to the shaping and art traditions of early skate and snow design. While dissimilar in shape, the tip and tail share identical widths, heights and lengths, creating a symmetrical twin ride designed for true-cambered, freestyle snowboarding. Artist: Bill Connors

The Heritage Series was created to commemorate 20 years of Arbor and our initial practice of using the same wood topsheet across all of our shapes. A platform that helped established the Arbor look, this Series brings together six of our most popular shapes as a collection. Each of the six shapes will be offered in two or three sizes. Each offering will be produced in a limited 95-piece production run. Every board will be made with a premium, sustainably sourced Palisander Wood Power Ply and matching base. The design, in the best Arbor tradition, gives each and every snowboard produced a “one-of-a-kind” wood grain finish. Combined in this matched collection, the individual

The Arbor Collective is a diverse cooperative of athletes, artists, designers, and friends who share a respect for the planet. Since 1995, it’s been good times, all day, everyday, without fail. Along the way, we worked to combine time honored craftsmanship and forward thinking construction, with a serious commitment to the environment. The result - Arbor Snowboards, Arbor Skateboards, and Arbor Apparel; three stand alone lines connected by a shared perspective on design, quality, and performance.
