6 Lawn Care Tips After Aeration & Seeding ARBOR-NOMICS TURF
OVERVIEW Aeration and seeding are two of the most beneficial lawn service Atlanta you can provide to your grass this year. This service is only available during the autumn season. Your lawn will require ongoing care after it has been meticulously aerated and seeded. Proper care in the weeks following your aeration and seeding service is important for seed germination and establishment in your cool season lawn.
STAY OFF THE GRASS We recommend that homeowners limit their foot traffic after seeding during the initial establishment period. You give the seed the best chance of germinating and sprouting new growth by limiting foot traffic.
SOIL PLUGS
Allow the soil plugs to decompose and fill the aeration holes on the lawn. After aeration, the seeds and soil plugs mix better with the non-compacted soil when reseeding. Your lawn mower will usually break them up and help work them back into the soil in two to three weeks.
WATERING Water your lawn after your lawn care professional has finished aerating and overseeding it to keep it evenly moist. This can mean a variety of things depending on your soil type. If your lawn is heavy clay rather than sandy soil, it may take longer to saturate. Water the lawn for one hour per section, applying 0.5 to 1 inch of water to the soil. The goal is to keep the surface of the soil moist without drowning the young seedlings.
APPLY PRE-EMERGENT WEED KILLER If you don't plan on overseeding your lawn and have a thick, beautiful lawn, apply a pre-emergent weed killer after aerating. The holes in the aerator tines allow the herbicide to enter the soil and form a barrier, killing weeds as they sprout. Herbicides will work much better if applied right after aeration.
IS IT GOOD TO MOW YOUR LAWN IMMEDIATELY AFTER AERATION? Mowing your lawn immediately after aeration is detrimental to its health. The main reason for not mowing immediately after core aeration is that the soil plugs or cores may fill the holes and reduce the aeration's effectiveness. Aeration is the most effective method of overseeding and fertilizing your lawn. If you intend to overseed or fertilize your freshly aerated lawn after aeration, you should not mow it.
DO NOT KEEP YOUR LAWN MOIST AFTER AERATING AND OVERSEEDING Cover the seeds with moist soil for at least a fourth of an inch after planting to encourage growth. A common blunder made by inexperienced aerators and overseeders is assuming that the natural rain cycle will provide all of the water needed. A few days without moisture, on the other hand, can be disastrous for a new seed. Set a daily watering schedule for three weeks after seeding, or until the grass emerges from the soil.
