THIN CITIES 3
“The fact remains that it has no walls, no ceilings, no floors: .. nothing that makes it seem a city” “..water pipes that rise vertically .. spread out horizontally ..: a forest of pipes” “..had survived a catastrophe, an earthquake, or the corrosion of termites.”
The use of similar geometry shapes is really interesting in this collage. It creates repetition in the use of the rectangular shape but even though theres a lot of different colours being used it doesn’t look overcrowded which I find really interesting.
I was attracted to this collage because of the crown like structure on the head of the woman. The colour combination used is very simple and minimalistic and is something that I could bring to my future work.
Lum, Mary ‘Invisible cities’ 2013. Collage. Arc space. Posted Jan 13th 2013. https://arcspace.com/exhibition/invisible-cities/
Höch, Hannah ‘Indian Dancer: From an Ethnographic Museum’ 1930. Collage. Moma. https://www.moma.org/collection/works/37360?sov_referrer=artist&artist_ id=2675&page=1
The one thing that I really like about this collage is the layering. By creating a background with white and blacks, it really makes the coloured parts of the design pop out. This collage particular serves as inspiration in the colour combination aspect and how certain parts pop out could be something that I take forward.
Picasso, Pablo ‘Bottle of Vieux Marc, Glass, Guitar and Newspaper’ 1913. Collage. Tate. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/picasso-bottle-of-vieux-marcglass-guitar-and-newspaper-t00414
Höch, Hannah ‘Collage II (On Filet Ground)’ 1925. Collage. Moma. https://www.moma.org/collection/works/32990?sov_referrer=artist&artist_ id=2675&page=1
I find this collage interesting because of the use of hard material. It looks much more organic and sort of home made by using cutouts of newspaper ect. I think creating collages by hand could be much more interesting than completing it digitally and its something that I want to explore more.

H A N D MADE COLLAGES
TASK A1 Hand made collages using newspaper, unbleaches paper, black paper and images from invisible cities collage provided by ARC1301 to represent the invisible cities ‘ARMILLA’ . In each of these collages I wanted to create a unfinished atmophere to achieve this I ripped up paper to get the raw edges which I think achieves this goal.
9
DRAFT C There was a sense of journey and depth perception in the reading which I wanted to explore/represent in this collage.
The Hand made collage represents the unfinished world of Armilla. Mentioned in the readings was the idea of unfinished bricklaying which is represented with the two halves of the circle opening up unleashes the mess and unfinished side of this city. The idea of pipes running through the city was created through shreds of paper which burst out from the circle. I also added in some rough colouring with black charcoal to reiterate the disrupted city spewing out. Images of people also help reiterate this feeling. Once scanned into photoshop I adjusted the levels to make it more darker so that it sticks out and using the magic wand tool took out any unnecessary information from the scan and scaled it down. This bottom part was a cut out from a magazine. I wanted to incorporate this as it creates a sense of direction for the viewers eyes to follow which would lead them to the collage. I also adjusted the levels on this cutout making it darker to suit the tone of the whole collage.
In this collage I also played around with the idea of two different sides of the city you can see depending on your viewpoint
This hand made collage was made to represent the atmosphere of a demolished city. I ripped up some news paper creating the long shreds which also tied in with the idea of pipes making up the city. The black background was used to represent the demolishment/unfinished part of the city which is reiterated with the strips falling off the black paper.
10
OLLAGES These strips blue symbolise both the nymphs and naiads combined with the reoccurring pipe imagery. The base of the steps were all from magazine which I scanned into photoshop - this represents the nymphs and naiads. I used the clipping mask to create these long rectangular strips which tie into the pipe theme. This rectangle is actually a picture of a mirror which I sourced from a magazine. Through using the marquee selection tool and the free transformation tool I slightly warped the image to create sort of a door way between the two sides of the city
These collage was based off the city of Armilla The impression that I got off the reading was that there are two sides to this city. What may seem like a destructive and unfinished city is actually filled with magical living creatures (nymphs and naiads ).
Hand made original collage is located on the bottom. Using the Marquee tool I took copied sections of my work and scattering them around the bottom to symbolise the unfinished idea of Amelia. I also wanted to incorporate this because of the texture of the ripped paper to symbolise the unfinished nature of the city which when compared to the long consistent line strokes of the water pipes depicts the two different sides of the city
These pipes were hand drawn. As you can see the nodes are interchangeable where some is facing upwards while the rest is facing downwards. This again represents the two facing sides of the city, how there can be two view of the city. Either you can see the destruction shown by the spiky pineapple heads or the blue circles which represent water and nymphs and naiads. Drawings of pipes was scanned. The levels was adjusted creating more prominent lines allowing me to use the magic wand tool getting rid of any other excess information on the page. Pineapple head was cut out from a magazine and scanned. Again using the levels and marquee tool to make selection of the pineapple leaves and to get rid of the white background. The circles were made using a clipping mask. The blue imagery behind it was sourced from a magazine which was then cut out into the shape of a circle. Using the transformation tool while holding control was used to distort the circles.
I wanted to create the atmosphere that everything was falling off the page which is why I included the person falling at the bottom of the page. The reason for this is again to create the idea of the unfinished city where the black piece of paper is the city.
11
ARMILLA COLLAGE #1 The goal of this collage was to capture the unfinished ambience of Armilla. Original water colour art work is used in the background and edited into photoshop where the opactiy was turned down and to clean up the length of the drips. The colour blue and black used for the drips are to represent the two opssoing sides of the city, where black represents the unfinished side wheras the blue represents theside where the nymphs lived. Layered ontop is cropped sections of the handmade collages arranged in varioius horizontal and vertical lines. This was used to create the effect of dissociating, creating an unfinished look. Towards the right the bright lime shape abstractly represents the other side of the city being much more vibrant than the unfinished aspect of the city. The falling people are also placed in different orientation to represent the different viepoints of the city you will get depending on what position you are looking at.
12
ARMILLA COLLAGE #2 This collage abstracts the different layers of Armilla. In the extract it was mentioned that even though this citiy may look unfnished and desserted, it actually hold life depending where your perspective is. This idea is brought forward with the hand drawm pipe structures. Which was edited in photoshop changing the levels and curve. These were drawn in a delibrate messy way to look entangeled with each other - representing the pipe like sturctures described in the extract. Using photoshop I edited the hand made collages specifically using newspaper cutouts layering it on the bottom of the pipe figures. There is also a blue colooured background - this colour helps describe the ambience that I perseved when reading the extract.
13
ARMILLA COLLAGE #3 This collage abstracts the idea of an unfinished city through the bursting hand made collage on the bottom to the letters added on photoshop after. When creating the hand made collage I felt that it would be better just to keep it minimal hence I took out the scanned image from a magazine out as the design was hetic by itself. Working on the idea of a city spewing out the letters further reimburse this idea which is why it was added

TIPS ON TAKING PHOTOS AT HOME Different colour backdrops: - White, 2.0x0.8 meters from a paper roll, or two sheets A1 format. - Black, 2.0x0.8 meters from a paper roll, or two sheets A1 format - Another colour backdrop (optional) Diffusers: - Translucent paper (like tracing paper) 2.0x0.8 meters from a paper roll two sheets A1 format. Reflectors: - White cardboard or foam board A1/A2 format. - Aluminum foil
Lights/lamps: - We will be using natural and artificial light. Find two artificial light sources (lamps, spotlights etc) Any table lamp can work. - Use a lamp capable of holding a large light-bulb. - A lamp we could easily orient would be perfect. - Use 15 to 20W led or CFL light-bulb (we need a strong light source) - For example: Large Adjustable Swing Arm Drafting Office Studio Clamp
