"Besigned" Village

PROJECT TYPE BEng Architecture- XJTLU

ARC 204

DATE LOCATION FUNCTION

Professor Mona Azadian

Fall 2021- 2/2 semester project

Houtouwan Village, China

Mixed-used Tourism

The project is located in Houtouwan Village, a small forgotten fishing village on Shengshan Island in Zhejiang Province, China. Once extremely rich and prosperous, it is now abandoned due to the overutilisation of its resources, and was exposed to the internet during the 2021 epidemic for its Wizard of Oz-like landscape, which has also caused countless people trapped in the city to long for nature.

Our goal is to transform the village of Hutouwan from an abandoned fishing village into a thriving cultural destination that celebrates the area's rich history and fishing culture. Our strategy is to achieve this by promoting future sustainability, resilience and profitability to help the fishing village form a new chain of self-sufficient businesses. Our vision includes restoring and improving the natural landscape and recreational attributes of the fishing village, attracting back the original villagers and bringing outside visitors to the village. By embracing this new vision, we believe we can create a vibrant and sustainable fishing village that will benefit the community and the environment.

The project consists of three phases, phase 1 aims to provide a starting point for future sustainability, resilience and profitability by transforming the village centre area into a multi-purpose space such as a cultural hall, hotel, etc., helping to realise our goals whilst celebrating the rich history and culture of the area. Phase 2 aims to take advantage of the topography of the western edge of the site to transform it into a cultural and recreational centre with cultural practices, scenic views and a food court. The third stage is to use the original houses on the east side of the site to transform them into a bed and breakfast for the original villagers to run their own business once they have a certain amount of traffic and an economic system in place.

Current Houtouwan Village Detail
Villagers can rediscover the beautiful life of Houtouwan Village and sit quietly on the rooftop garden to feel
sea breeze and sunset. Tourists can also experience the folk culture and beautiful scenery of Houtouwan Village.

This area is the most densely populated with houses, and after accumulating a certain amount of passenger flow in Houtouwan Village, it provides shelter and economic sources for the villagers' return. Villagers can use abandoned houses to transform into homestays for their own living while also providing accommodation for tourists. Enable the village to operate spontaneously and form an economic cycle.

This area is the first stage area and is the center of Houtouwan Village, which includes reception, exhibitions, food, coffee, camping and other leisure activities. It is also the main activity area for tourists and villagers, and the main venue for various folk activities. All buildings are built based on the original layout of Houtouwan Village, maximizing the restoration of Houtouwan Village's style. The village faces the seaside and is arranged according to the undulating terrain, providing a good view for all houses.

In the second stage, entertainment activities in Houtouwan Village were added, and a fishing village cultural street was established. During holidays, this street will be bustling with various local cuisine, folk decorations, and fireworks events. Due to the unique geographical location of the region, the natural viewing platform not only offers stunning seaside style and fishing villages, but also becomes a leisure and social place for people.

Fall 2021- 1/2 semester project

Soochow, China Theater

The project is located in Gusu District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China, geographically situated on the edge of the moat in the ancient city centre. The site is surrounded by a large number of preserved garden relics and is rich in tourist activities. However, due to the high residential density, there is a great lack of public activity areas for the residents, as well as limited civic activities in the old city.

Standing on the ancient city wall next to the site, the view across the site to the new city of Suzhou can be seen in the distance. Inspired by this, the project aims to create a dialogue between the new city and the old city. Bringing the vitality of the new town into the old town, the old town can be transformed into not only a tourist garden, but also more recreational activities, leading to a new type of life in the old town.

The project will solve the problem of serious lack of recreational space for the citizens of Gusu District in the old city, and create a public space for the citizens, including waterfront area and open-air stage and other facilities.

The original site is near more elderly people, with a beautiful landscape and a wide view, it is a leisure gathering place for the residents of the old city.

The project will focus on this area and attract different age groups to create a richer and more comfortable life in the old town.

Fall 2023- 1/2 semester project

La palma, Spain

Multifunctional building

Site is located in la palma Island, Spain, which is a scenic venue, located on the south side of the island. There is a tunnel under the site, which was previously excavated to find the source of the holy spring. Due to the volcanic eruption in La Palma Island, a lot of soil and buildings have been damaged, which has seriously affected the local economy. Therefore, focusing on tourism development is the main strategy that can bring economy and make up for the losses caused by volcanic eruption.

There are many tourist routes aimed at different landscapes on the island, including tropical rain forests, volcanoes, oceans and stargazing. Inspired by this, this project takes "path" as the concept, emphasizing linear spatial experience and experiencing different functions by different routes. The space arrangement order is also based on path, and the overlapping areas of path form a courtyard, and the functional space is arranged according to the courtyard.

As a part of the popular hiking route on the island, this building provides a stop for tourists to hike on the island. The whole building is completely hidden underground and integrated into the site. Natural light is introduced through multiple courtyards, and the interaction between tourists and the natural elements of the site is guided through the restrictions of the courtyards on the scenery, thus enriching the tourist experience.

Site Analysis

La Palma Island, Spain

La Palma is the most north-westerly of the Spanish Canary Islands. As with all the Canary Islands, La Palma is a volcanic island and in 2021 a volcanic eruption caused significant damage to the area. The island's rich natural resources and history and culture have made it very popular for tourism. The project is intended to create a spa accommodation and exhibition complex using the site's original sacred springs as a vehicle to allow visitors to experience the spa while experiencing the natural landscape and culture of the area.

The dining room and the accommodation area are separated by two courtyards. The accommodation area has a separate terrace facing the sea.

The second floor of the central area, which directly connects the beach and faces the sea. The floor window echoes the roof skylight, reflecting the light to the underground.

The first floor corridor of the accommodation area has a wide view and looks at the restaurant through the atrium.

The rendering model shows the relationship between the building and the site, and all courtyards face the sea. The original holy fountain Tunnel is preserved, through which you can get to the ground floor museum.

This area is a transitional space between the central area and the accommodation area, with a rest platform and a coffee bar.
The fourth floor of the central area is connected with the atrium through the skylight. Even the lowest underground floor can get a light beam through the skylight to produce a sense of sacredness. The square in front of the entrance of the research

Thermal Bath

Site is located in la palma Island, Spain, which is a scenic venue, located on the south side of the island. There is a tunnel under the site, which was previously excavated to find the source of the holy spring.

The project aims to design a series of buildings around the function of soaking hot springs based on the combination of the site and the interaction between people and nature. The meaning of the holy founhtain is of great significance to the local people. It can not only treat some skin diseases and other physical diseases, but also has become a belief and a healing spirit for the local people after the recovery of the founhtain. This project is to combine the spirit and space experience to form a complete set of spiritual healing hot spring experience.

The overall atmosphere of the building is connected by a covered bridge, with the functions of accommodation, catering and fitness on the left and the hot spring experience on the right. The spatial order of hot springs follows normal temperature-cold water-warm water-hot water. Attached to the site as a whole, you can go directly to the beach after experiencing the hot spring from the top entrance. The art museum on the first floor is connected to the original entrance of the tunnel. After experiencing the hot spring, you can go into the tunnel and feel the healing of the holy founhtain.
