My undergraduate experience has confirmed my innovative path of architectural exploration, which allowed me to express design concepts through the different structural forms of the building. Better translating "abstract concepts" into "architectural design" is a part I have struggled to explore in participating in school design projects and commercial architectural design. However, China's commercial buildings excessively pursue the efficiency of completion and formalize this transformation process, giving less attention to regional culture and site nature. This goes against my original intention and career path. After acquiring professional knowledge and skills in the field, I have started considering how to better integrate the imagination and inspiration of individuals into the design and bring these conceptualized ideas to fruition, addressing the disconnect between the building and the forces that shape it. When designing buildings, what should architects do to balance the needs and preferences of the users, the site and context in which the building will be located, and the structural, technical, and environmental considerations? Considering these questions, I have decided to study for a postgraduate degree in this field. After research, I believe that the Architectural Design March at UCL will offer me an ideal opportunity to explore further these specific academic areas. Undergraduate studies in architecture at the Xi' an Jiaotong-Liverpool University was colorful and fruitful. The British teaching mode and studying fully delivered in English helped me adapt to the learning environment at the postgraduate stage in advance. The systematic course and the academic atmosphere encouraging free creation cultivated my rigorous design styles and innovative thinking. This period of study helped improve my cognition of spatial shaping, my ability to distinguish architectural structures, and my insight into the texture of materials and the collocation of colors. Learning the philosophy of art and aesthetics made up for my underlying thinking logic of architectural design. From participating in small architectural designs to expressing views on larger architectural forms such as urban sites and natural slopes, I mastered the design methods of different building types, the materials and construction techniques used to create them, and how to give them a human element. Additionally, practical projects that mimic the working environment of architects enabled me to plan construction companies and implement building standards per RIBA construction standards. During those years of study and practice, I not only acquired specific knowledge but also had further contact and understanding of urban construction and economic development, which will benefit my advanced study. I also paid attention to training my ability to conduct research, as demonstrated by my final year project. My favorite architect, Peter Zumthor, features a simple and modest architectural style, focusing on the surrounding environment, whose expression for the building contributed to my design thinking. Therefore, in my third and fourth projects, I made a vivid interpretation of this architectural thinking. The site is located on the beach on the north-west side of the island of La Palma, Spain. Completely different design strategies were used considering functional requirements. In the third project, I built a research center with the concept of "path," highlighting the linear spatial experience. The courtyard was designed to provide natural light while responding to the island's natural landscape, enabling visitors to interact with nature. The fourth project was bath design, where I planned to transform the holy fountain underneath the grounds, a symbol of hope and healing, into a spiritual experience. Through these two projects, I aimed to quest for various possibilities of the same site, responding to environment through functional forms and integrating the building with the site, and the interaction between the architectural space and people. To gain real-world urban planning literacy and professional expertise, I interned at Tus-Design Group Co., Ltd, Suzhou. One of my notable involvements was to partake in the plan design of agricultural and sideline products e-commerce market of Xiaojing Village of Suzhou City, highlighting the creative building styles and clear space management solutions. Leafed through vast cases of seafood markets made me realize the challenge of simultaneously meeting the supply and demand of suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. After discussing with the chief designers several times, we determined to present it as a composite spatial structure with different functional areas and streamline, discriminating the loading and unloading area, wholesale sites, catering, and retail distract from the first floor to the third. Then, we took inspiration from the sails of fishing boats and simulated the roof as a wind-blown canvas, making the whole building resemble a light fishing boat. By participating in case studies and the design of concept diagrams, site diagrams, floor plans, and site-related functional diagrams, I improved my modelling capabilities using RHINO software and mastered how to draw efficiently in AutoCAD. At the same time, these experiences have deepened my understanding of the relationship among buildings, cities, and the environment, recognizing that they are correlated and it is an exciting topic I need to study in the future. Britain is a country where historic buildings are often successfully integrated with modern society, local areas have played a successful role in major regeneration schemes, which have, in turn, created significant benefits for the local economies. All this makes the UK an ideal place to pursue my master’s degree. Specifically, I chose the Architectural Design March program at the UCL. As one of the top architecture schools in the world, Bartlett School of Architecture will help broaden my vision and creative thinking. Learning the Architectural Design: Historical, Cultural and Theoretical Skills module will enable me to integrate traditional and modern cultures and apply them to modern architecture, making buildings an inheritance and recording the conventional culture precipitation and development process. Meanwhile, the collaborative work between individuals and groups is also very attractive, and I expect to complete work with students from different countries through interesting thinking collisions. Upon graduation, I am eager to enter an international enterprise like Foster and Gensler as an architect, accumulating design experience, strengthening my understanding of the architecture industry, and forming my unique design styles.

Life of Houtouwan Vilage STAGE 1 This area is the first stage area and is the center of Houtouwan Village, which includes reception, exhibitions, food, coffee, camping and other leisure activities. It is also the main activity area for tourists and villagers, and the main venue for various folk activities. All buildings are built based on the original layout of Houtouwan Village, maximizing the restoration of Houtouwan Village's style. The village faces the seaside and is arranged according to the undulating terrain, providing a good view for all houses.

STAGE 2 In the second stage, entertainment activities in Houtouwan Village were added, and a fishing village cultural street was established. During holidays, this street will be bustling with various local cuisine, folk decorations, and fireworks events. Due to the unique geographical location of the region, the natural viewing platform not only offers stunning seaside style and fishing villages, but also becomes a leisure and social place for people.

STAGE 3 This area is the most densely populated with houses, and after accumulating a certain amount of passenger flow in Houtouwan Village, it provides shelter and economic sources for the villagers' return. Villagers can use abandoned houses to transform into homestays for their own living while also providing accommodation for tourists. Enable the village to operate spontaneously and form an economic cycle.

The eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma in 2021 caused damage to 1.1 hectares of soil and 2,715 buildings, severely affecting the local economy. The project is intended to link the development of tourism on the island in order to increase economic income and compensate for the damage caused by the eruption. The third function of the project is the research centre, which is based on the concept of 'path', emphasising a linear spatial experience. As part of the island's popular travelling routes, it provides a stopping point for tourists to hike around the island. The entire building volume is completely submerged underground, bringing in natural light through multiple courtyards and enhancing the visitor's interaction with the natural elements of the site, enriching the tourist experience. PART 1 EXCITED

PART 2 DEPRESSED

The part 1 is located on the west side of Courtyard Ⅰ . The visitor's view through the courtyard runs the entire length of the building. In this area, visitors have open views and are able to interact with each other.

Part 2 is the exhibition area, which is divided into four pavilions surrounding the courtyard Ⅰ , and the pavilions and the courtyard are connected to each other, introducing some natural light.

It is this unobstructed view that drives the visitor's desire to explore the next section of the space.

The space of the exhibition area is intertwined, and the overall atmosphere is depressing with limited natural light.

PART 3 PLACID

PART 4 OPTIMISTIC

Area 3 is located in the middle area, north of Courtyard II. This area is a reception hall with an overall gently open space, facing the ocean to the south. It connects the exhibition area on the west side and the accommodation area on the east side. It is an important staging space for visitors.

Through the central area, the space again transitions from large to small again. This area contains Courtyard III and Courtyard IV, with the restaurant area on the north side of the courtyard and the twostorey accommodation area on the south side. The courtyard of the accommodation area is facing the sea, which once again mobilises the visitor's mood to be optimistic.

Courtyard Ⅳ

The entire building volume is completely submerged underground, and natural light is introduced through multiple courtyards, preserving the natural landscape of the site while enhancing the interaction between visitors and nature. By transforming the main natural landscape elements of the island (sea, forest, volcano, starry sky) into four courtyards, all functions are arranged around the four courtyards. Each courtyard enhances the interaction between visitors and their corresponding natural element.

As part of the journey, experience the island's landscape through the emotional space......

PROJECT TYPE ARC 304 DATE LOCATION

BEng Architecture- XJTLU Professor Teo Hidalgo Nacher Fall 2022- 2/2 semester project La palma, Spain

This project was developed based on the original Holy Fountain on the site. The existing tunnel was excavated in search of the source of the Holy Fountain. By analysing the history between the Holy Fountain and the local people, a healing bath was created around the Holy Fountain in relation to the existing landscape of the site.

Source of Holy Fountain

"Volcanoes meet water to form hot springs." The transition of the relationship between locals and Holy Fountain The benefits

a. Lapalma Island is short of water resources. b. The excavation of Holy fountain and the construction of waterways have promoted the economic development of the whole island c. Holy fountain can treat many diseases, and its significance is very valuable to local people.

a

b

c The disappearance

Chapter 2

a. Volcanic eruption buried the original holy spring b. Local crops and buildings were greatly destroyed.

“Sit on the Holy Fountain”

c. People began to look for the holy spring again.

a

b

c The transition from physics to spirit

The holy spring makes up for the losses caused by volcanic eruption and heals the spirit of local people.

a. A 200-meter-long tunnel was dug in the site and the source of the holy spring was rediscovered. b. The local economy recovers and diversified cultures develop together.

Create a healing experience space around the hot spring experience.

c. The significance of the holy spring to the local people has changed from physics to sacred spiritual healing
