Adèle Flamand-Browne
Arcadia Contemporary is delighted to announce “Caryatid,” a Spotlight Exhibition featuring the recent works of Adèle Flamand-Browne. This collection showcases Adèle’s exploration into the concept of the “selfportrait” as she engages in a process that goes beyond mere representation of oneself, exploring her identity, emotions, and symbolically, her own human experience.
“Through the creation of this body of work, I found a new connection with the concept of self-portraiture and what constitutes one. In recent years, I have been drawn to portrait photography, especially ones which subvert the tradition of the subject facing the viewer directly. This body of work is focused on capturing a moment instead of posturing and choreographed documentation.” - Adèle Flamand-Browne In “Caryatid,” Flamand-Browne moves away from traditional portraiture to focus on capturing fleeting moments that blur the lines between posing and genuine expression. Her choice of medium with various combinations of graphite and carbon pigment stems from extensive experimentation. Her studio practice is a process that combines her love for drawing and painting. Emulating a stark range of values, delicate mark-making to deep shadows often seen by processes in etching and lithography.
“Caryatid” represents the artist’s very first, one-person exhibition of original works.

Adèle Flamand-Browne is a Washington, D.C. based artist who recently completed her BFA at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. She is dedicated to the practice of drawing and painting and is continuously exploring the significance of line and form through her large scale charcoal drawings and oil paintings. Her choice of schooling at a figurative based fine art academy set in motion her captivation with one of her primary subjects, the figure.
Since attending LACFA Adèle has participated in several exhibitions within and outside the college, including a semester abroad, where her work was included in a small group show in Italy. Academic and merit based scholarships from LACFA allowed her to focus on her studio practices, and continue her work outside of the academic year. Upon receiving the Stobart Fellowship in May of 2019 she has gone on to develop a body of work inspired by her senior show. Adèle continues to seek out and attend masterclasses and residency programs to further her knowledge in figurative art. Arcadia Contemporary is proud to represent Adèle Flamand-Browne.
