We made a decision some time ago that to help solve the challenges that will define our future we needed to think big. We did this by taking the expertise of all our combined teams together.

We’ve gone so far, so quickly it’s something I’m proud of, but it’s also opened my eyes to all that can be achieved.

As someone who is always on the move, I rely hugely on London transport. Lately some of my experiences have been miserable – overcrowding on trains, delays and cancellations mean people are struggling to get to the places that they need to be. That’s why it’s so important to me to have worked on a project that can do something about these problems. Rebuilding one of London’s oldest and busiest railway stations while keeping it open comes with its challenges though; it has been described as carrying out open heart surgery on a patient while they’re still awake. The new London Bridge station opened at the end of August and it is amazing to see the difference it will make to people’s lives. The new station will reduce delays and improve people’s travel experience. It means more time with family, more time with friends and less time waiting on a crowded platform.

Europe is currently facing an unprecedented displacement crisis. People are fleeing their homes due to conflicts in other parts of the world and those arriving in the UK are facing further challenges - they often do not have sufficient UK work experience and language skills to be able to secure a permanent and meaningful role. Arcadis is now working with Transitions, a small not-for-profit organisation, which helps skilled people with refugee status to find work. Our goal was to give them the experience and opportunities that they need. It’s been an incredibly challenging but eye-opening experience and something I am really proud to be involved in. Ten new Arcadians joined us in August on a traineeship programme, with the overall goal of securing relevant permanent employment. I am looking forward to seeing how our new colleagues progress and looking forward to what is next.

WHAT’S YOUR STORY? 'Improving quality of life' is our wonderfully inspiring passion statement. Sometimes, though, it can seem a bit remote from the realities of our daily work. The truth is that it takes thousands of Arcadians, all making their own contribution to make a real difference to our world. We’ve all got great stories to tell about the outstanding work we do but we’re too quick to reduce them to facts and figures. It’s too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of the positive impact our work has. Take Becca’s story – from sharing in a workshop to meeting Paxman...


BECCA’S STORY I love the Southbank, but back in 2011 I ventured too close to the water’s edge. I took part in a charity canoe race that started well but finished badly – I was poorly for days after from the pollutants in the Thames. It’s not a small problem. 100 tonnes of waste are pumped into the river every day; unsustainable for our city and a danger to the community. It’s why I’m proud to be a part of the £4bn Thames Tideway solution, especially as it happens to be one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the UK. Building a 26 mile tunnel under the river is a not an everyday challenge, but it’s why we’re doing it that counts. I can’t wait to see people swimming safely in the Thames – it will feel so good to know I helped make it happen.

I met Jeremy Paxman at a recent event and he asked me what my role at Arcadis is – so I told him my story. He loved it.

Our offices are so much more than just a place to work. In many offices we have created ‘neighbourhoods’ to bring different skills and knowledge together. This makes us a more innovative and collaborative business, as well as making our workplace a more fun and inspiring place to be. For this to truly work, we all need to be a good neighbour. Be sure to use your space in a considerate way so that others can use it when you’re not there. We adopt a clear desk policy. This ensures we maintain a working environment that we can all be proud of as well as ensuring client data is not compromised.

To make sure that all of our people have somewhere to place their belongings, within each office residents are allocated lockers. Not only does this reduce clutter, it also supports sustainability principals by reducing printing costs and paper waste.

EATING AT DESKS To ensure workspaces remain clean and to support your well-being, please don’t eat at your desk. This encourages you to take a break and meet with people from across the Arcadis world. All offices have designated break-out areas where you can eat lunch and chat to your colleagues.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE Here at Arcadis we embrace flexible working and the technology that means we can work effectively wherever we happen to be. If you do not need to be in the office to deliver for clients, you may be able to work from home. But always be mindful of health and safety and be sure to be available throughout the day should clients or colleagues need to contact you.
