TAMER EL GABALY Architecture Student

I’M AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT THAT ENJOYS PRODUCING MUSIC. I REALLY BELEIVE THAT ARCHITECTURE AND MUSIC GO HAND IN GAND. WHEN I START CREATING A NEW INSTRUMENTAL, IT ALL STARTS WITH A SKETCHY IDEA THAT COMES TO MY MIND. SIMILARLY, IN ARCHITECTURE WE TRY TO COME UP WITH NEW INNOVATIVE IDEAS THAT CAN ENHANCE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE IN THIS WORLD . . .

THINK. EXPERIMENT. IMPLEMENT. WHATEVER COMES UP TO MY MIND, I INSTANTLY DOCUMENT THIS THOUGHT ON A PIECE OF PAPER. IT HELPS ME TO PLAN FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL TRIALS THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO TEST AND MPLEMENT THIS IDEA IN REALITY.

SEASHELLS PROVIDE MAXIMUM ENCLOSURE AND PROTECTION SINCE THE SHELL IS VERY STRUCTURALLY EFFICIENT, LIGHTWEIGHT AND ROBUST. THE BIVALVE PROVIDES SIMILAR PROTECTION TO HOMELESS PEOPLE IN SUEZ, EGYPT.

THE BIVALVE IS A SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS, INSPIRED FROM THE SEASHELL. A SEASHELL IS A PROTECTIVE CRUST THAT OCCUPIES A VERY DELICATE CREATURE CALLED THE MOLLUSK.

EXPAND. ROTATE. TWIST. THESE ARE THE RULES OF CONSTRUCTION THAT THE MOLLUSK FOLLOWS DURING THE SEASHELL CONSTRUCTION.

2

GROWTH LINES GROWTH LINES APPEAR ON THE SEASHELL’S EXTERIOR INDICATE THE SEASHELL’S AGE. CORRUGATIONS OCCURING IN GROWTH LINES ADD TO THE SEASHELL’S STRUCTURAL STRENGTH WHILE ALSO GIVING AN AESTHETIC APPEARANCE TO THE SEASHELL’S FORM.

6

3

MINIMAL THICKNESS

MINIMUM THICKNESS MAKES SEASHELLS VERY LIGHTWEIGHT YET ECONOMIC IN MATERIAL CONSUMPTION. STRUCTURAL STRENGTH IS STILL VERY EFFICIENT DUE TO EXTERIOR CORRUGATIONS.

4

THE MUSCLE THE MUSCLE IN THE SEASHELL IS WHAT ALLOWS IT TO OPEN AND CLOSE DURING DIFFERENT CONDITIONS. WHEN THE SEASHELL DIES, THE MUSCLE RELAXES AND DIES THEREFORE SEASHELLS ARE FOUND IN A FULLY-OPENED STATE ON THE SEA SHORE.

EXPERIMENTATION I

PHASE I IN OUR FIRST TRIAL, WE DECIDED TO GO WITH A SIMPLE TUBULAR FORM, THE STRAWS. THE DIFFERENTIATION CAME FROM AN EXTERNAL PANEL THAT ACTED AS AN ARCHOR TO THE STRAWS.

35

SETUP

PHASE II FOR THIS EXPERIMENTATION, IT WAS QUITE CLEAR THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT WILL BE PASSING THROUGH THE PENETRATIONS DIRECTLY AND SO IT DEPENDS SOLELY ON THEIR SIZE. NO LIGHT REFRACTION COULD TAKE PLACE THUS DEFYING THE PURPOSE.
