The main objective is to showcase Algae potential connecting with new emerging green technologies, to create a whole new CO2 scrubbing integrated system, which includes: to clean polluted air, to create energy onsite, and to process all waste water to be reused. Using bio-engineering processes, a synergetic closed loop integrates three different levels of carbon reduction: Direct carbon sequestration from the air (used to feed the Algae bioreactor), Absorption by vegetal photosynthesis (Algae, vertical farming and phytoremediation), and Reduction by energy saving (introduction of solar and wind harvesting energy).

Algae facades admit specific daylighting spectrum such as green, blue or red light into interior spaces, depending on what colors the algae retains, which can be utilized for color therapy or supplementing building programs

The advantage of biomass is that it can be used flexibly for power and heat generation, and it can be stored with virtually no energy loss

FUTURE SYNERGIES The bio-responsive façade aims to create synergies by linking different systems for building services, energy and heat distribution, diverse water systems and combustion processes. The key to a successful implementation of photobioreactors on a wider scale will be cooperation between stakeholders and designers. It is a technology that benefits from strong interdisciplinary collaboration, combining skills in environmental design, façades, materials, simulations, services, structural engineering and control systems. The main purpose is to reduce the carbon footprint of the Loop area, going further than a classical “Retrofit” operation. A comprehensive work on building envelope, heating & cooling, hot water, lighting systems, etc could be only the starting point.

Buildings consume 39% of the primary energy in the Building, with about 18% used by artificial lighting Heat produced by a lighting system can generate up to 24% ofmthe total building cooling load In addition to these energy implications, daylighting has been shown to contribute significantly to human health and well-being, reducing absenteeism and increasing productivity in office environments.
