interiordesign integration
eriord integ Providing in-house interior design for our clients reduces cost and finds a unity in design thinking between the external and internal form and finishes. Our collaborative delivery process is found most evidently in the integration of interior design services within our architectural projects while also being able to deliver interior design as a standalone discipline.
30
Headed by Ali, who has over two decades of experience, our interior design team has seamlessly been working in tandem with the architecture team delivering unified designs.
Through establishment of the interior design style, the architecture is able to adapt, respond and reflect this aesthetic approach and provide formal structures externally that positively impact on the internal space.

erplan masterplanning
Masterplanning is applicable to all types of architectural projects particularly where the client, developer or land owner anticipates multiple buildings to occupy a site.
Future-proofing of architectural designs and precincts is a core value of our design team. Fundamental to this design approach is planning and forward thinking for future circumstances. The team has an in-depth understanding of this scope of work having delivered masterplans and revised masterplans for a multitude of school campuses, mining camps, industrial developments, transport corridors and sporting fields. Our masterplanning captures wider context analysis including orientation, site features, environmental factors, neighbouring uses, views, vistas, axis, topography and more. Our knowledge can and has been applied to similar design tasks which includes urban planning, cost planning and schematic planning. This process is a perfect fit for staging development, adapting to site changes and managing funding. 32

sualis visualisation
Architectural visualisation is more than a rendered image to showcase an end result of the design. There is an exponential growth in digital 3D modelling and enhancement of experiencing an architectural product before project completion. At Architectural Collaborative, we place great value on finding the most cost-effective and time efficient visualisation modelling software to allow all stakeholders holistically understand the architecture prior to paying for the end result.
34
Internally, this capability allows us as designers to pre-empt design flaws, construction details and proportional imbalance before these issues can impact the economical value of projects. More importantly, providing 3D models, renders and/ or flythroughs of projects allow the client & end user to be immersed in the proposed design from the outset. This is vital for making educated decisions prior to the commencement of construction, whether it be a detail, a facade or entire building.
sation CAPABILITIES / 35
graphicdesign &wayfinding The integration of Graphic Design in our practice is critical to provide a holistic delivery service. Our team can assist in the integration of signage, wayfinding and visual branding within an architectural design, or the creation of visual marketing to assist in portraying a space to potential users.
graph Our team can adapt architecture, interior design and signage to existing corporate logos, branding which includes colour, company values and the aesthetic structure of logos. This is a service often found in the delivery or child care centres, educational projects and multi-residential developments Partnering this skill with our visualisation capability, we are able to provide a tangible product for distribution to potential investors, developers and tenants. Working with our larger sites and buildings, it is critical that the design includes intuitive way-finding that is found through formal relationships, hierarchy of spaces and signage. This is often developed at the outset of projects including the masterplanning phase.

MTMARIACOLLEGE BGA2017
MTMARIACOLLEGEBGA2017
Client: Brisbane Catholic Education & Mt Maria College Petrie Construction Budget: $3.6million The Mt Maria College BGA 2017 project consists of three science labs, three general learning classrooms, a learning support zone with associated staff facilities, student amenities and a new tuckshop. We approached the design by first analysing the site in terms of visual/ ambulatory axes through the school. Using this to divide the site into pathways, we then considered the bulk and scale of the form and how it could respond to solar orientation, clearance from surrounding buildings (for overshadowing), site restrictions, and avoiding the landscaped poinciana trees to the north. With this established, we allocated functions based on ideal position – the tuckshop and eating area was situated at the heart of the school to the east, the amenities were close to main pathways, the more ‘internalised’ science rooms were located on the periphery to the west, while the learning
support and chill-out areas were given the calmer spaces on the upper floor. While undertaking this, we also considered the aesthetics and how the building could merge seamlessly into its context. Materials, colours, the roof form and other design elements where all selected to ensure the new centre would fit harmoniously with the surrounding campus buildings. Lastly, the centre was given character inside and out through interior design and landscape architecture. The interior design infused each room a greater sense of identity by utilising varying colour schemes in green, blue, yellow and red. Landscape-wise, the goal was to merge landscape and building where possible, an aim which is most visible in the undulating sandstone-block planters that run through the main social spaces.

Aged Care Facility Taigum, Brisbane QLD Completed 2018 Client: Anglicare Construction Budget: $25.0million Symes Grove is a 105 Bed Aged Care Facility located in Taigum, North Brisbane. It was designed with three primary objectives; to maximise light and views for residents, to optimise staff efficiencies for travel and supervision and thirdly to reduce energy consumption through passive design. Unlike the usual loop-style plan favoured for most aged care facilities, this centre was planned like the spokes of a wheel, with a series of wings branching off a centralised social & staff space. This proved beneficial for several reasons – staff inefficiencies and walking distances were minimised, the supervision capacity of corridors increased, and rooms generally had greater access to views and sunlight. As each wing had a unique orientation, we devised a series of different façade systems to block or filter
SYMESGROVE AGEDCAREFACILITY

direct summer sunlight penetration into rooms, resulting in increased comfort and reduced loads on air conditioning. This centre was also notable for its approach to special care (dementia) areas. Instead of placing all the dementia-affected patients in a large loop-planned ward, the special care wing was broken into a series of ‘cottages’ consisting of six to eight bedrooms, a living room, a resident’s kitchen, a resident’s laundry, and a garden. All these spaces were linked together in a smaller circular path so that resident circumambulation of the facility (necessitated in special care) would still be provided. However, the small scale of these cottages meant that they could conform to these standards while retaining a more intimate and homely feel.

Multi Residential Fortitude Valley, Brisbane Completed 2018 Client: Forrester Properties Construction Budget: $19.0million The Baxter Street Apartment is a 52-unit development located in Fortitude Valley in inner-Brisbane. The building was designed to maximise efficiencies and floor space on a highly constrained site, where the form was largely determined by council planning envelopes and building regulations. The main feature of the building is a series of glass fins mounted on the facade which served to provide sun protection while also emphasising the verticality of the form. This was done to counter the bulky shape that was driven by the 5 storey podium requirement. The colours relate to the hues commonly associated with Brisbane - reds, greens and purples of summer jacaranda and poinciana trees.
BAXTERSTREET APARTMENTS
BAXTERSTREETAPARTMENTS
We provided the concept design through to documentation, including the interior design of the club lounge media room and the roof deck, which were added to the project at a late stage during construction. For the club lounge, we lined the walls with acoustic panelling and LED lighting in long vertical stripes of varying thickness, relating to the building’s external appearance. We also followed this language in the design of the roof deck, which was planned into several different spaces catering for groups of different sizes. This included a lap pool, 2 outdoor cinema zones and an open air gym. The apartment designs were completed in conjunction with Elm Interiors.
This project was awarded the Master Builders Housing and Constructions Award of Residential Building (high-rise over 3 storeys) up to $20 million.

THEEVENTSCENTRE
Client: Sunshine Coast Council in conjunction with The Events Centre $6.0million Construction Budget As part of the Building Better Regions fund, The Events Centre in Caloundra was granted a $6 million redevelopment which involved a striking new entry including a porte cochere and internal works to the foyer, bar and cafe, kitchen, main theatre and major HVAC works. The success of this project lies in the balance of the proposed design with the existing fabric. Our approach celebrates the existing 1980’s Art-Deco inspired structure and materiality while meeting the client’s ‘Centre by the Sea’ theme. The facade along Minchinton Street has been completely revitalised with a new porte cochere, covered deck and covered link. These curvaceous forms pay respect to the existing structure while also meeting the client’s brief. The design captures elements of Caloundra and the wider Sunshine Coast region through the use of material, form and subtle articulation.
Timber extrusions extend beyond the structure in an intentional pattern to reference the Glasshouse Mountains of Sunshine Coast’s hinterland while emphasising the client’s desire for a wave structure. Timber materiality references the Caloundra boardwalk at it’s local Bulcock Beach which is also the highlighting material within the Main Theatre.
The multi-purposed Main Theatre consisted of providing new wall and ceiling surfaces while working existing seating, stages and lighting designs. Working closely with the acoustic engineer, particular surface patterns and shapes were selected to create a multi-functional theatre space while meeting client satisfaction aesthetically and acoustically. Meeting the versatile space’s acoustic, functional and aesthetic expectation is the design’s strength.

SANSISTOCOLLEGE DOMINICCENTRE
SANSISTOCOLLEGE DOMINICCENTRE
Client: Brisbane Catholic Education & San Sisto College Construction Budget: $2.7million The Dominic Centre Redevelopment was the final stage of a 5-year mater plan which aimed to provide modern teaching facilities and maximise useable external space on a densely developed campus. The project had a diverse functional brief including two senior science rooms, general learning room for RE studies, modern student amenities and change rooms, learning support and wellbeing centre, gym and IT facilities. By replacing the original Dominic Centre (the oldest building on campus) the project occupied a very significant parcel of the school site and was to become the principal student entrance and threshold between administrative and academic facilities. It was this siting that inspired the inclusion of the extended roof structure and perforated screening as a distinct entry statement.
The simple gable roof form references the scale and geometry of the original convent building adjacent. This ensures an appropriate synergy with the built context. A brick arched colonnade provides the primary structure for the roof overhang and formalises the student entry to the campus. The centre is divided into a pair of two storey extensions which engage with the existing Aquinas building to frame a central courtyard and provide the external space envisaged by the master plan.

In addition to the standard facilities, the centre included a mothers room, a top-floor multipurpose room/ deck with recording studio, and an interactive kitchen (with adjacent kitchen court and vegetable garden) to assist in the learning process. Overall the design sought to be respectful of its context. Materials and elements were selected to relate it to the buildings in the surrounding precinct, which included a church, a nunnery and a school. Simultaneously, the design aesthetic aimed to be slightly more ‘playful’ and childfocused than a standard building, so children would instinctively feel less intimidated and more relaxed when at this centre. Externally the store visually welcomes customer entrance via a glazed wind lobby that provides a double height entry space acting as the threshold between the external environment and the wonders of the retail merchandise that await your purchase.
Anchored to either side of the main Kmart entry portal are a number of smaller tenancies that provide a range of other bespoke retail offerings. These tenancies have glazed shopfront so as customers and onlookers can engage visually and metaphorically with the active daily rituals of shopping and socializing. The palate of materials that the building is intended to be constructed from is a combination of concrete, steel, glass and timber battens and screens. Working in collaboration with WSP (international multidisciplinary consultancy) the team at Architectural Collaborative provided architecture and graphic design services for the conversion of the existing warehouses and offices into a state-of-the-art facility capable of attracting international productions to the Queensland Region. Sound stages require a very specific micro-climate to allow for the building of set’s and the recording of productions. As light and noise is controlled artificially within the production itself, any light and noise penetrating the building fabric must be removed to allow for consistent recording. In a new build this is simple as the external fabric can be designed from the inside-out to ensure the space is contained. Retro-fitting an existing building though is difficult, as any addition must work within the confines of the existing cladding and structural constraints of the existing facility. As the project would have a high rotation of tenants and users it was important to provide a detailed wayfinding approach to the entirety of the facility. The team provided graphic design services to complete wayfinding & signage throughout the site. Building off Screen Queensland’s logo the pixel and their corporate colours.

Commercial // Hospitality Brisbane CBD, QLD Completed 2019 Client: Accor Hotel Group Construction Budget: $<1.0million ‘Goldfinch’ is a refurbishment of an existing restaurant located on the ground floor of the Pullman Hotel in Brisbane. Seating approximately 200 people, project involved the refurbishment of the current outdated, dark ‘heavy’ 70’s environment. The client brief was to ‘lighten up the space’ and make it ‘more appealing to passers by and hotel client”. With this in mind, the design approach resulted in a slight re-shuffle of the interior layout to create some formal and some less formal dining spaces such as banquette seating, as well as a cafe area where pedestrians can walk up to a service and display counter to order coffee. The palette is light and fresh with a hint of elegance in the bronze trimming which is anchored to subtle references of the hotels rich history

Our involvement followed a concept scheme by CW Interior Design, who designed the restaurant in a ‘conservatory style’ that emphasised a panelled-wall aesthetic with reflective surfaces and hanging plants & lights.
We were engaged to refine the layout, resolve details, produce 3D renders, assemble a full schedule of finishes, provide construction documentation and assist with RFIs in the building process. The refurbishment invigorated what was previously a relatively flat and underutilised space.

Sports & Recreation Dalby, QLD Completed 2011 Client: Dalby Regional Council and PCYC Construction Budget: $6.7million This development consisted of two indoor sprung basketballs courts, netball courts, soccer & touch football fields, indoor gymnasium area, toilets, change room facilities, kiosk, canteen facilities, childcare facilities, and large community function area. This project required a passive designed building with maximum possible use of natural light and ventilation. As the site is prone to flooding, the structure needed to be constructed above the flood plain. The highly reactive black soil presented challenges for positioning of composition of the structures footings.

STCOLUMBANS COLLEGEASSEMBLY HALL
STCOLUMBANSCOLLEGE ASSEMBLYHALL
Client: Brisbane Catholic Education & St Columbans College Construction Budget: $3.0million The primary challenge of this hall was to provide all the necessary facilities and square-metre areas of the brief while staying within a very tight budget. Although it required extensive valueengineering prior to construction, we worked with the builders and obtained a result that fulfilled both the school’s requirements of quantity and quality. Environmentally, we sought to make the building as passively comfortable as possible. Low level louvres direct breezes through the space while high level louvres and whirly-birds remove hot air from the ceiling. The northern end of the hall has huge sheets of translucent polycarbonate cladding that work to fill the space with natural light and reduce dependence on artificial lighting. The space is also very flexible, as large nets can be slid across the hall to divide up spaces.
The Master Plan produced by Architectural Collaborative and Endorsed by Brisbane Catholic Education in 2009, incorporated the intergeneration of a Trade Training Centre (TTC) which was funded by the Australian Federal Government and constructed 2 years prior. The TTC which is located on the southern end of the hall (Stage side) provides a dual capacity in functioning independently as a hair dressing facility, catering kitchen and restaurant, but also interacts with the Hall converting the space into a fully functioning performing arts centre with a professional stage and lighting.
The Mary Mackillop Performance Centre holds the ability to cater for 2 000 people in a formal seated arrangement with catering produced in the commercial kitchen.
