DOUBLE NEGATIVE

The concept of double negative is inspired by topography landscape of nature. It is formed by natural

forces similar to mountain caves that serves unique spatial qualities.

As the climate changes, the

movement of natural factors such as wind, rain, snow create erosion to form voids underground. As those voids intersect each other, the third condition of double negative space is created. The aim of this project is to define and organize those movements, allowing them to transform each other by intersection. This intersection creates spatial qualities that affect the lighting and continuity of space in the third condition.

In this project, my study is about a complex geometry that focuses on the Helicoid surface. The

geometry creates minimal surface area and has its own advantages when applied to architecture. In

perspective of spatial creation, the void is created by mentor construct, from open to enclose.

By using the Helicoid surface as an architectural study of form and space, it speaks to the language of movement, creating continuity in circulation: changing levels, gives multiple choices of pathway, and forming voids in various scale.

This project is the integration of the geometry system of Helicoid surface developed from Sequence project to the library design. The aim is to create the continuity of space, form the interior space as a field of artificial landscape, and provide multiple choices of path and intersection for users. 6

AIR | LIGHT & CIRCULATION This project centers on the development of a modular system that organizes and infuses three types of flow within the building - air, light, and circulation - thereby inducing a new quality of space that arises through the synthesis of these elements.

NEW URBAN CONDITION This project focuses on creating a new urban condition by developing a formal design system capable of responding to emerging complexities of a new urban context. In this project, I’ve designed an artificial landscape on the second to top level to introduce a new form of public space. This new landscape aims to redefine the spatial conditions of an urban environment . The grid system in the project acts as the spatial field that organizes and connects all the programs together as a network. It allows to maximize the public zone and encourages an irruption of events, social encounters, as well as creates spatial connection in both vertical and horizontal direction.

ANIMATE FORM & HUMAN BODY The world is moving in such fast pace that automation technology is quietly replacing human interactions. As a trade-off for industrial innovation, the bonding connection between human and machine is slowly weakened.

The Dynamic Walk project is a bridge to re-connect the relationship, strengthen the human influence in a structure design, and re-engage human motions to enable mechanical mechanism without any use of automation device.

This project focuses on analyzing the structural system of Sendai Mediatheque designed by Toyo Ito to understand its relationship with spatial freedom and concept of “Fluidity”.

The study

explores the variation of structural modularity and further uncovers its interconnection with steel floor plates, and a transparent facade system.
