Kun Shan is well know for her garden crafts and historic monuments which attract many tourists every year. It is a place of natural beauty anf humanity. To proceed an architectural design on such a propitious territory, the pursuit of balance between disseminating culture and economic development is od utmost importance. Under such conviction we gave up the stiff anf rigid form of design. Instead, we emphasize the exquisite and graceful quality which is the very essential characteristics of Kun Shan culture in our design. The main body of the architecture is a three-dimensional Croissant shape which id hugging a water pool and a free form ndoor swimming bath. The axis is emphasized as a threshold to create a strewn skylight along the building and hence a gradual change foreground. The layout of “Against the Sky and Accommodate the Land” and “Interplay of Solid and Void” creates a visual climax in the journey of approching the building. Water, Tree and Architecture are being fused to form a romantic ambient.

789 - Student Activity Centre Phase 1, Li Ka Shing Foundation, Shantou University

Background Shantou University Student Activity Centre Phase I includes the Redevelopment of Block 7,8,9 and Redevelopment of Leisure Path, which offers the students interconnected interior and exterior activities spaces, as well as the integration of existing scattered building units, together creates a cultural activities centre in connection with the characters of the University. Design concept The unique historical meaning of Block 7,8,9, a place where the University organizers planned for the development of the University, is memorized by revitalizing its architectural elements in the design. Apart from adopting the spatial relationships of the historical buildings, we further strengthen its courtyard concept by the introduction of veranda, covered walkway, aligned glazed windows and doors, creating unified interior and exterior activities spaces. Moreover, the aged trees are not only respectively preserved; they also act as essential focus for the elaborated courtyard. Spatial anchors are extended from Block 7,8,9 for its neighbourhoods. At the back, Block 9 shares the reserved spaces with the opposite warehouse. In the front, it begins the Leisure Path which consists of respective cultural features, spatial characters and greenery that links up the scattered Block 7,8,9, swimming pool, sport fiels and the gymnasium together by the defined and expanded students’ activities spaces.

Jury’s Citation The jury finds this design’s quiet, unassuming and humble nature extremely attractive. The brief calls for a design that unites the various buildings on campus into a single entity, and injects new life into the otherwise grey and uneventful spaces between the buildigns. Judging from the results, the design team has achieved the goal with an elegance of inconspicuousness. The design has a high degree of clarity in concept and execution. The architect’s role is to create space for activities to take place. But instead of making the building do the work, the design turns the ‘invisible’ spaces between the buildings into activity areas, areas where activities are conducted quietly and calmly amidst landscapes and blank backdrops. The project is poetic both in scale and in execution. As the design team puts it, the architect has provided a canvas, and the students will paint the picture.

Hong Kong Jockey Club Mt. Davis Youth Hostel Background Any visitor who wants to have a commanding view of the whole Hong Kong city, it is most convenient and strategic to stay in the Youth Hostel on Mt. Davis. The location where the twin buildings situated is used to be the commanders’military quarters to protect the then British Colony against the Japanese invasion. In the early 80’s, four small cubic buildings with pitched roofs were constructed to accommodate about 50 hostellers. Twenty years later in March 2000, an extension of two buildings was completed to allow a total accommodation of 100 hostellers from all around the world. Design Intention The design starts with an embracement of a central courtyard between the old and new hostels. We believe that interactive spaces set in a casual and nutural manner, should be outdoor, semi-outdoor or indoor, for young hostellers to meet, to chat, to stay and to sit around are of primary importance. Along this design intent, *niches for socialization* are carved and created along the building, providing a full range of informal pocket spaces to enhance spontaneous gathering. As there are military ruins remained around the site, the design of the outdoor features tries to capture this unique character of bold and rustic concrete structures and translate the idea into the use of materials, shapes, and spatial organization. The generic concept is further expressed through the pragmatic application of fairface concrete , white-washed walls, and humble architectural forms. In this manner, hostellers from overseas do not only enjoy views and facilities of the new buildings, but can also understand the history and spirit of the place.

BIG FAMILY

Disabled persons form an essential community in our pluralistic society. We shall respect their needs because of a faith that everyone is born with esteem. With a humble attitude in dealing with this re-provision project for a dilapidated old dormitory for disabled children, we conceive design of architecture as an opportunity to go beyond the functional requirements to help foster sense of home for a big family and aims at providing a dignified life for mentally and physical handicapped students. The notion of accessibility is extended from just about unobstructed physical movement to a total sense of freedom within an integrated living experience created through a spatial network formed by habitation spaces: houses, courtyards and gardens. A central cloistered courtyard provides major gathering space whereas a strip of gardens are private open spaces extending from individual houses (dormitories). Means of movement formed by ramps, lobbies, lift and stairs are not designed as separate armature for circulation but articulated as an efficient connective tissue interwoven within the entire spatial system. Besides, the design pays serious attention to environmental issues from its orientation with regard to light and noise sources, in preserving all existing trees. We determined to employ simple, fundamental yet diversified low-tech architectural means for the detail design of skylights, windows for natural ventilation and lighting. With all the limitation of budget and time, we wish to thank our client, students and their parents for being an exceptional patient partner and teacher who allow us to explore architecture with our very humble approach.
