Craig Gorddard World Youth Day in Cologne was also the first time 23-year-old teacher Craig Gorddard has been overseas. The design and technology teacher at St Luke’s College Karratha said he came to WYD looking for an awesome experience of the universality of the Catholic Church. “It is amazing that you can have so many youth from so many different cultures worship in the same place,” he said. “God knows the spiritual path of each one of us and what we need, “If people are open then he will give them what they’re looking for, not with force, “Many may not know what it is they are looking for,” Mr Gorddard said. “I want to bring back hope that Christ has and is the answer to people’s yearning for truth,” “I want to be able to pass this on.”

WELCOME TO THE FINAL COMMEMORATIVE EDITION OF THE RECORD

I

have found myself reading the four commemorative editions of The Record with great interest. Reports of life in the Archdiocese of Perth over the past 140 years have been both insightful and also highly amusing at times. Seeking to cover more than 7,000 issues of the newspaper – 150,000 pages of reporting – presenting these in a mere 84 pages over four editions has been quite a feat. Like me, I am sure you are grateful for all the hard work and dedication that have gone into achieving this. Pope Francis stated earlier this year that “good communication helps us to grow closer, to know one another better, and ultimately to grow in unity”. The Holy Father has spoken of the need for Catholics to create a “culture of encounter” and believes that “media can help us greatly in this, especially nowadays, when the networks of human communication have made unprecedented advances”. I am encouraged to learn that, as each week passes, there are increasing numbers of people who are signing up to receive and read the e-Record via email. This is proving for many to be a popular and more accessible way of engaging with the life of the Archdiocese. Pope Francis has also written that “the desire for digital connectivity can have the effect of isolating us from our neighbours, from those closest to us. We should not overlook the fact that those who for whatever reason lack access to social media run the risk of being left behind”. With this in mind, it is heartening also to know that many parishes are distributing paper copies of the weekly electronic news thereby reaching out to engage with those who do not have easy

access to modern technology. Within the next few months, the Archdiocese is expected to see the arrival of two new means of communication: a printed monthly magazine that will also be made available online, and also a new archdiocesan website. These are both exciting ventures. However, as we further embrace the digital environment, let us not lose sight of what it means to grow in mutual understanding of one another. Above all, my hope is that the changes happening in the field of communication within the Archdiocese will lead each of us to take the time to further enter into silence and to listen, not only to ourselves and to God, but also to others. With this fourth edition, the commemorative journey of The Record comes to an end. My desire is that we might now move into the future purposefully to provide a culture where the beauty of faith and the face of Christ can both be encountered.

to commit all of the Church’s energies to a new evangelisation and to the mission ad gentes [the people]. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples… If we look at today’s world, we are struck by many negative factors that can lead to pessimism. But this feeling is unjustified: we have faith in God our Father and Lord and in his mercy… God is preparing a great springtime for Christianity, and we can already see its first signs.

The Church will come to love him ■ By Barbara J. Fraser

lthough critics of Pope Benedict XVI worry that his election as Pope could lead to divisions within the Church, a US priest who has worked closely with him predicted “the church will come to love him.” As the chief defender of Church doctrine, the new pope “had to make decisions that were not popular, but he’s not a policeman - he’s an evangeliser,” said US Dominican Father Augustine Di Noia, undersecretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the new Pope, headed for more than 23 years. Mgr Charles Scicluna, the congregation’s promoter of justice, said he felt “deep joy and great hope for the future” when the white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney and the bells of St Peter’s Basilica rang out.

He is a Pope for the universal Church, and he has lived that in his ministry in the Roman Curia for 23 years. “He is a man of great compassion and great wisdom. I know that from direct experience, and I’m sure that the Lord has chosen him because the world needs wisdom and compassion,” Mgr Scicluna said. The shortness of the conclave “means that the cardinals saw something in Cardinal Ratzinger that led Page 10 them to elect him very rapidly,” said Jesuit Father Luis Ladaria, secretary ofPage the10International Theological Commission. The Pope’s colleagues cited his years of Vatican experience as a likely key factor in his peers’ decision. After more than 23 years of

“working with one of the greatest popes in the history of Christendom, he has a very clear understanding of what the church needs,” Father Di Noia said. Mgr Scicluna said that over the years Pope Benedict has met and talked with bishops from all over the world. “His ability not only to understand, but also to be very close to the immediate problems of so many different continents really makes him an extraordinary Pope,” he said. Preaching the homilies for Pope John Paul II’s funeral and the Mass preceding the conclave allowed Pope Benedict to publicly outline the course he would chart for the Church. One of the “ideological currents” that he sees as pushing the world toward a “dictatorship of relativism” is the secularism that has led to a decline in the number of Catholics, particularly in his native Europe. “He is deeply concerned for the re-evangelisation of Europe,” Father Di Noia said. “He will want to reach young people in those countries very much in the way that Pope John Paul did.” The new Pope’s choice of a name also reflects that concern. “Benedictine monasticism was one of the main roots by which the faith was transmitted all over Europe for 1,000 years,” Father Di Noia said. Nevertheless, Cardinal Ratzinger’s colleagues do not expect him to be a strictly European Pope. “My idea of him is not of a German Pope,” Msgr Scicluna said. “He is a Pope for the universal Church, and he has lived that in his ministry in the Roman Curia for 23 years.” Asked whether Pope Benedict XVI could have as significant an impact on Western Europe as his predecessor did on Eastern Europe, Father Ladaria was more cautious. “It’s possible,” he said. “God will

Fears for Iraqi Christians under Shariah Church official says Christians will flee Iraq if it imposes Shariah ■ By Simon Caldwell

A Chaldean Catholic leader said Christianity may begin to disappear from Iraq if the country’s new constitution is based on Shariah, or Islamic law. “If there is nothing that assures Christians of their rights, they will leave for other countries,” said Archbishop Louis Sako of Kirkuk, Iraq. “We are asking people to stay in this country, but the problem is that we cannot give them a vision for the future. No one knows what the future will hold,” he told Aid to the Church in Need on August 23. His remarks were published on the Web site of the international charity’s British offices. The role of Islam in the constitution is one of several areas of disagreement that prevented the constitution from being ratified on August 15. The deadline was extended August soon to beuntil on the Web 22 and then for a further three days when politicians failed to reach consensus on time. We just do not know what the future will be for Iraqi Christians. All we can do is hope and pray that things will improve,” he said. “The Christians were here long before the coming of Islam and the Arabs,” he added. “We are an indigenous population. We are not foreign or strange. Where is the democracy that we all longed for?” More than 90 percent of the Iraqi population is Muslim. of the Switzerland-based Society of St Pius X, which was founded by Archbishop Lefebvre after he broke with Rome. Archbishop Lefebvre, who died in 1991, rejected the liturgical reforms and concepts of religious freedom and ecumenism as formulated by the Second Vatican Council. Pope John Paul II set up a Vatican commission, “Ecclesia Dei,” in 1988 to offer pastoral care to Archbishop Lefebvre’s former followers. The commission’s head, Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, is in charge of keeping a channel of communication open with current leaders of the Lefebvrite group. The cardinal was present at the August 29 meeting, Navarro-Valls said. In a July interview with DICI, the press agency of the Society of St Pius X, Bishop Fellay said he would ask the Pope to lift the excommunication against himself, the other three bishops and Archbishop Lefebvre and to authorise, without restrictions, all Catholic priests to celebrate the Tridentine Mass, the rite replaced in 1969 with publication of the new Roman Missal. “These are two preconditions which we cannot dissociate from any further doctrinal discussion,” he said. Though Bishop Fellay said “the issue of the Mass is not all” the group is concerned with, he added, “we must begin with something concrete.”

he new archbishopdesignate of Canberra says he will not be afraid to publicly criticise the nation’s parliamentarians once he has taken up residence in the nation’s capital. But encouragement - not only criticism - for those engaged in the complex game of politics will be the goal for the Church’s new leader in town. Bishop Mark Coleridge, whose appointment as the new Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn was announced this week, will replace Archbishop Francis Carroll who has retired at the age of 75. This week the new Archbishop was asked by The Record if his appointment is an opportunity for the Church to put its views strongly before MPs. “I don’t want to stick the boots in,” Bishop Coleridge answered. “Politics is a thoroughly worthy business. “I will be there helping, supporting and even at times criticising parliamentarians.” The archbishop-designate hopes to get to know many politicians personally. For the Church, he said, the question is how to influence politics, not whether it should.

■ BY ANTHONY BARICH

AFTER two years of eager anticipation, St Anne’s Church in Belmont has been opened and blessed as a centre for celebration of the Mass in Latin according to Pope Benedict XVI’s 2007 motu Summorum Pontificum. S proprio IN E 1 8which 7 4 took$2.00 TheCceremony, place on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March came after Perth Latin Mass chaplain Fr Michael Rowe undertook a complete overhaul of the parish established in 1940. Fr Rowe has been operating out of St John’s Pro-Cathedral since he took over from Redemptorist Fr Augustine Cummins. As the community has continued to grow the old Pro-Cathedral has proved S too I ItNsmall. C E 1 8 7 4 $2.00 had no parking, public toilets, meeting hall or amenities. Belmont has all erecord.com.au three, andt hwas used extensively as the congregation feasted after the church blessing, Holy Hour, Benediction and Mass on 17 March, St Patrick’s Day. While appearing small from the outside, Fr Rowe is happy with St Anne’s, which he says is at least twice the size of the Pro-Cathedral and is more spacious. The priorities he identified after taking over the parish the day after Pentecost Sunday 2008 included painting the entire church, restoring t h e r e the c o windows r d . c o mbecause .au the stained glass was falling out and installing an altar and the adjoining steps in the proper place for a Tridentine Mass. From a far off land... a Pope of Guiding the next conclave

This photo of Perth seminarian Mark Baumgarten rocketed around the world’s news agencies and newspapers after it was captured by Reuters photographer Alessandro Bianchi in St Peter’s Square as the Pope led the Angelus on February 17. Mr Baumgarten was among an estimated hundred thousand people who turned out for one of the last official appearances of Pope Benedict. Mr Baumgarten is in his third year of studies for the priesthood as a student at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Moreover, the true – ear papabili brothers literally, Pope-ables and – are likely to sisters, Good evening. You know that the duty of the Conclave was to give Rome a bishop. It seems that my brother cardinals picked him from almost the ends of the earth. But here we are! I thank you for the warm welcome. The diocesan community of Rome has its bishop. Thank you! First and foremost I would like to say a prayer for our Bishop Emeritus Benedict XVI. Let us pray together for him, that the Lord bless him and the Virgin keep him.” After leading the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Gloria, Pope Francis again addressed the crowd saying: “And now let us begin this journey, bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome, which is the one that leads all the churches in charity. A journey of fraternity, of trust between us. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the world so that this might be a great brotherhood. emerge only after all the worlds’ cardinals – not just the 117 who will be under 80 and eligible to vote – begin meeting at the Vatican in the coming days. One thing is already clear, however: because of their experience and the esteem they enjoy among their peers, certain cardinals are likely to serve as trusted advisers to the rest in the discussions and election. Here, in alphabetical order, are 12 cardinals expected to have a major voice in the deliberations:

l Conventional wisdom has long held that the cardinals will never elect an American pope, lest the leadership of the Church appear to be linked with the United States’ economic and geopolitical dominance. But the extroverted and jocular Cardinal Timothy Dolan, 63, charmed and impressed many in the College of Cardinals in February 2012 when he delivered the main presentation at a meeting Pope Benedict XVI had called to discuss the new evangelisation. The

Pope himself praised the New York Archbishop’s presentation on how to revive the faith in increasingly secular societies as “enthusiastic, joyful and profound”. l Although not a familiar name in the press, Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo of Esztergom-Budapest, 60, is a major figure among his peers in Europe, the Church’s traditional heartland and the region of more than half the cardinal electors. He was elected to a second five-year term as president of the Council of

European Episcopal Conferences in 2011. l Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, 68, is a member of the Society of St Sulpice, whose members are, strictly speaking, diocesan priests but which is normally considered a religious order. Hence, he is one of only 19 members of religious orders among the cardinal electors, who are overwhelmingly diocesan clergy. He is prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, which Please turn to Page 12
