Acolyte ministry will bring great joy, challenges NEW ACOLYTES were encouraged to heed the words of St Paul’s letter to Timothy by Archbishop Costelloe at the bi-Annual Institution Mass on September 30. More than 500 people were present for the occasion at St Mary’s Cathedral, which saw 97 new acolytes instituted to the service of acolyte. The 97 newly instituted will join some 1000 acolytes in giving service to the Church in Perth, serving at the altar, preparing sacred vessels and serving as an extraordinary ministers to distribute the Eucharist. In his homily for the occasion, Archbishop Costelloe recalled the words of St Pauls letter to Timothy. “Paul tells us, ‘we can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.’ In this way, he goes on to say, a ‘man who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work,” the Archbishop said. The Archbishop went on to say that the ministry of the acolytes will bring great joy, but that there will be times when it also brings challenges and disappointments. “After all you are being formally commissioned for service in the Church: you will, in a way that hasn’t been true in quite the same way before, become men of EDITION #4 | OCTOBER 23, 2014

50 years of Josephite education celebrated CELEBRATIONS commemorating 50 years of Josephite education at St Joseph’s school in Wyndham, in the Diocese of Broome, were enhanced with raw emotion on 8 August 2014 as numerous elders expressed a deep sense of affection towards their teachers. The anniversary was inaugurated by Bishop of Broome Christopher Saunders, who celebrated Mass at the school with past and present students. Representatives from the Diocese of Broome said that music and prayer throughout the Mass and the entertainment of guests in an afternoon concert reflected a school and community tradition that has remained vibrant and enthusiastic. Past principals and staff members as well as pastoral workers travelled across the country in order to renew relationships and revisit a school to which they contributed on a professional and religious level. Some 15 Josephite Sisters also gathered to be with the small community at St Joseph’s Wyndham for the occasion. The parent body, staff, students and wider community went to great lengths to show their appreciation for the legacy they now lovingly and generously carry forward. The afternoon concert also saw the students of the school re-enact the Bishop asking the Sisters to come to Wyndham, the first Sister’s plane flight from Perth, and the first few years of school. each class sang a song before the entire school was encouraged to sing a concluding Blessing song together. This was followed by a sharing session where three past students shared memories of their early days, and their fondness for the Sisters. Some spoke of a deep sense of gratitude towards their mentors, emphasising that they felt “the Sisters cared about us” – a moving and emotional gesture to which the Sisters responded with some encouraging words for the students and their families. Photos on display also brought back many memories for the families and visiting Josephite Sisters. There could not have been a better way to close such a wonderful event than with a Corroboree,
a sign that pays homage to the rich tradition and culture of the people on whose land the school has been built. Given the success of the event, it seems that the legacy of Catholic education

Schoenstatt celebrate’s centenary jubilee By Mat De Sousa
CELEBRATING their centenary Jubilee in more than 200 shrines worldwide, the international Schoenstatt family at Mt Richon, Armadale marked their milestone with hundreds of people at a special celebration on October 19. As crowds of people descended upon the grounds on Mt Richon, the shrine was transformed from a place of silence and peace to one filled with life and jubilation. The celebrations began with a procession of symbols by members of the Scheonstatt family signifying the history of the Schoenstatt movement. These items included images of the Virgin Mary and Father Joseph Kentenich, founder of the Schoenstatt movement, as well as 100 red roses, one for every year of the movement’s existence. Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Barry Hickey together with 20 clergy from across the Archdiocese. At the conclusion of his hom-

Perth youth leaders attend national convention in Adelaide MORE THAN a dozen youth leaders from Perth headed to the national bi-annual Australian Catholic Youth Ministry (ACYM) Convention hosted in Adelaide from 3 to 5 October 2014. They were joined by almost 400 participants and two Bishops from Western Australia. The theme for the convention was taken from the World Youth Day (WYD)
2014 theme “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 5:3). Formation, information and inspiration were delivered by Bishops and Australia’s best Youth Ministers for the three days. The event also included a National WYD launch of the new official tour operator for Krakow 2016 – Cosmos. It was a Polish
themed dinner at the Convention, complete with Polish dancers during the night and a mini- concert by Fr Rob Galea. The next Australian Catholic Youth (ACY) Festival to be hosted in Adelaide in December of 2015 was also launched on the Saturday evening of the convention. The big announcement was accompanied by great
food, spectacular program and a festive venue. The ACYM Convention included plenary sessions across a variety of topics and workshops on how to speak to young people about vocations, safe-guarding young people, training new leaders, and studies in youth ministry. Full Text available at

SJOG Sisters continue legacy with Scholar Program THE UNIVERSITY of Notre Dame Australia and the Sisters of St John of God continue to develop their unique bond, which has existed for more than 25 years, by establishing a Visiting Scholar Program on the Fremantle Campus. To be launched in 2015, the Visiting Scholar Program is a three-year initiative that will see respected Catholic leaders and scholars assume a short-term position in Fremantle to establish faith and reflection-based initiatives for staff, students and the broader community. Photos date from 1867, and show how in the 1880s New Norcia was home to around 150 Aboriginal people and 70 monks. This two-day workshop given by Dr Paul Gibney is suitable for anyone engaging in counselling or therapy with couples and will address some of the frequent controversies and dilemmas of couples’ therapy including: successful therapeutic strategy, working with implicit and explicit contracts, desire and belonging - the politics of longterm unions, addressing recurring relational trauma, helping clients leave abusive relationships. Built in 1864 on the Bendigo goldfields in central Victoria it served the huge influx of people from all nations with miners dispersing into other areas and states once the rush finished. The anniversary organising committee hopes to reach descendants of the first settlers to the Myers Flat area.
