EXCLUSIVE: PADRE PIO RELICS COMING TO PERTH By Jamie O’Brien

THE RELICS of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, also known as Padre Pio, are coming to St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth, this October. Cathedral Dean Mgr Michael Keating confirmed the announcement to The eRecord, noting the relics will include a pair of Padre Pio’s gloves, his hair, a piece of his nails, a scab from the stigmata and a linen cloth that was used to wipe blood from his side wound. The relics will be on display at the Cathedral from Saturday 22 October, until Wednesday 26 October. St Pio of Pietrelcina, OFM Cap, was a Catholic friar and priest from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. Born Francesco Forgione on 25 May 1887, and dying on 23 September 1968, he became famous for exhibiting stigmata for most of his life, thereby generating much interest and controversy. He was both beatified in 1999 and later canonised in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. “This will be a very momentous occasion not just for Catholics across Perth, but for anyone who is interested in the life of Padre Pio,” Mgr Keating said. “For many people, this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience, in faith, the life of Padre Pio.” Mgr Keating told The eRecord that he personally met Padre Pio in 1965, when he visited the town of San Giovanni Rotondo, Foggia, Italy. Visitation of the relics – which will only occur at St Mary’s Cathedral - are taking place courtesy of the request of St Mary’s Cathedral parishioner Patrizia DiStefano and Fr GianMaria Digiorgio, also a fellow friar and priest from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. Fr GianMaria, who is Economic Provincial of the Capuchin Friary of Santa Maria delle Grazie in San

Giovanni Rotondo, Foggia, Italy, was also a student of Padre Pio, who also later worked with him as a seminarian. Fr GianMaria will speak about his work and the life of Padre Pio during the visitation of the relics. More information will be available in coming weeks and a schedule of Mass times during the visitation of the relics is below.

DISCOVERING THE SENSITIVE TOUCH OF JESUS’ MERCY,

ARCHBISHOP COSTELLOE DELIVERS CATECHESIS AT WYD 2016 By Marco Ceccarelli

“GOD WILL want to do something, I don’t know what it is, but he will say something special to each one of you while you’re away”.

With these words, spoken at the Commissioning Mass in Perth held just before this year’s World Youth Day (WYD), Archbishop Timothy Costelloe encouraged young pilgrims of Perth to travel to Poland expecting to receive something that may transform their lives.

The Archbishop reiterated this point at the WYD during a thought-provoking catechesis delivered in a parish on the outskirts of Krakow. Speaking on the theme of mercy to a crowd of English speaking Continue on page 3

INTERACTION WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE CENTRE OF

WORLD YOUTH DAY EXPERIENCE FOR ARCHBISHOP By Caroline Smith

ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe has said that spending time with young people, and observing their small acts of mercy, was one of the most important aspects of his experience at this year’s World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow, Poland.

In a video interview filmed at the event in Poland, Archbishop Costelloe said he had met and conversed with many young people while travelling through Italy on his way to WYD. PHOTO: MATTHEW TLOCZEK

In a video interview filmed at the event in Poland, Archbishop Costelloe said he had met and conversed with many young people while travelling through Italy on his way to WYD. “I travelled through Italy, through Rome and then Turin with young people, spending our days together, having meals together, then we went to Warsaw and spent some days in the diocese there,” he said. He added that these encounters were very important for the bishops taking part, and reflected their role as spiritual leaders in their communities. “You’re spending all your time with young people, often just mucking around and having fun, other times having quite beautiful and profound conversations with individual people,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “It’s a real chance for a bishop to be what bishops are supposed to be, which is loving, caring shepherds to their people, and to young people in particular. “And as a Salesian, following in the footsteps of St John Bosco, to be with young people is a wonderful thing for me. I hope for them too, but it certainly is for me.”

Pope Francis – who was also in Poland for WYD – had also used this opportunity to speak to young people about their faith and other issues, Archbishop Costelloe said. “People sometimes think the bishops will have very immediate access to the Pope, but to be honest, when the Pope comes to WYD, he comes to meet the young people,” he said. pilgrims, the Archbishop explained ‘how’ one can position himself or herself so as to be touched by God’s mercy. He did this by inviting the young people to put Christ first at the centre of everything they know and, quoting Saint Pope John Paul II, he emphasised that a Christian’s witness to Christ “would be hopelessly inadequate if we ourselves have not first contemplated the face of Christ”. “I want you to embark on a journey with me as we gaze on the face of Christ, touching people with his mercy,” Archbishop Costelloe said. The Archbishop indicated that he would focus on three

different key people in the Gospels as examples of the way in which God’s mercy reaches into the very depths of one’s human condition so as not to condemn, but to give new opportunities to start afresh in Christ. “I want you to say to yourself: how am I like this person? What is it about this person that might help me to understand what the merciful touch of Christ looks like or could look like in my life?” he said. The first Gospel chosen was that of Zaccheus, the infamous tax-collector who, trying to catch a glimpse of Jesus as He walked by, was met by the Lord with compassion rather than hostility. Describing Zaccheus as a man who must have been

God’s mercy reaches into the very depths of one’s human condition so as not to condemn, but to give new opportunities to start afresh in Christ. small not only in stature, but short in honesty, spirit and generosity, the Archbishop drew the pilgrims’ attention to the way in which Jesus does not reproach Zaccheus but simply asks to be invited to dinner at his house. “Jesus had this instinctive understanding that Zacchaeus was isolated, lonely, dejected, despised and marginalised. So in his wisdom and sensitivity,

Jesus thinks, ‘What’s the best thing I can do to help this man understand that no matter what he’s done, he’s still loved, cherished, worth something?’” he explained. “So for Zacchaeus, Jesus did exactly the right thing to get through to him in his situation. He loved him and forgave him. Had Jesus chastised him, it would’ve just been more of the same. Zacchaeus gets used to that, he gets it all the time. But Jesus, with His infinite understanding of humanity, finds a way to say to this man: I care about you, I love you, I understand where you’re coming from.” Full Text available at

Visiting holy sites, meeting young Catholics among the highlights of WYD for Bishop Don FOR BISHOP Don Sproxton, attending this year’s World Youth Day (WYD) in Poland provided a great opportunity to visit sites of spiritual significance, to meet young people and to reflect on the messages that Pope Francis – and the Church generally – has for them today. Looking back on the event – held from 26 to 31 July – Bishop Sproxton said the Holy Father seemed to strike a chord with young people at WYD, encouraging them to take a more active role in their societies. “The speech Pope Francis gave to us at the Vigil on the Campus Misericordia in Kraków was received enthusiastically by the young,” Bishop Sproxton said. “He helped them to see how forces in the world today are trying to take away our freedom to choose the way of joy and happiness as presented by Jesus Christ.

“Young people are being encouraged to seek security for their lives by retreating to a place of safety - as he put it, to seek the 'soft sofa' and be transported from the issues of the world by escaping to the world of video games and the computer screen. “People can easily become disengaged from the great issues of the world, from

other people and, even, from ourselves.” By contrast, Pope Francis had urged young people to build a culture of fellowship and love for others. “The pilgrims cheered as he finished by saying to them: 'Have the courage to show us that it is easier to build bridges than walls..... to challenge us to take the

path of fraternity.....Jesus, who is truth, is asking you to abandon the paths of rejection, division and emptiness.....Are you up to this? May the Lord bless your dreams',” Bishop Sproxton added. Full Text available at

DIACONATE APPOINTMENT IS BOTH AN HONOUR AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE PARISH AND THE POOR By Caroline Smith

In 2006, 14 men were ordained to the Permanent Diaconate for the Archdiocese of Perth. A decade on, the Deacons talk to The eRecord about how their work as deacons has inspired them. WHEN Permanent Deacon Trevor Lyra was ordained 10 years ago, it was the second time he had entered into a fellowship of men serving something bigger than themselves. Permanent Deacons are men – married or single – who are called to be ordained ministers of the Church, undertaking a spiritual role in the Archdiocese at a specific parish or location. Deacons can preach, celebrate baptisms, marriages, conduct Communion Services and other liturgical celebrations such as funeral services but are unable to celebrate Mass, anoint the sick or give absolution. Deacon Lyra had previously been a member of the Indian

Army, and he said being received into the Diaconate had brought him a similar honour, albeit one which connected him more to his faith. “On the day of my graduation from the Indian Military Academy at the age of 21 years, I felt a sense of pride that is hard to explain,” he said. “On the day of my ordination to the Diaconate, that same sense of pride returned to me, and I realized that I have now received all seven sacraments.” He added that he had felt both surprise and honour upon being asked to perform a blessing on the night of his ordination. “I had not yet left the altar, when a priest approached me, fell on his knees in front of me and asked me for my first blessing,” Deacon Lyra said. “The shock was beyond my expectation, filled with tears and a lump in my throat, I struggled to bless that humble priest. “He quickly brought me

to the realisation of what it meant, serving in God's army as against serving my nation, in man's army. A sense of humility flooded me and I thanked God for it.” He added that the training required to become a Deacon had brought him a greater connection to his faith, as well as preparing him well for his duties at Maida Vale’s St

Francis of Assisi Parish. “During my studies in preparation for my Diaconate, I was focused on achieving success towards that goal,” Deacon Lyra said. “I was a cradle Catholic who took my faith for granted; now, I was challenged to study it in more detail. Full Text available at
