COMMENCES OPERATION

THE NEW Catholic Church Administration Office, which has officially been named Griver House, has commenced operation. Staff from the Catholic Church Office, Archdiocesan Finance Office, Catholic Development Fund and LifeLink have last month moved into the new building at 249 Adelaide Terrace, Perth. A rchbi shop Ti mot hy Costelloe explained that the new building has been named Griver House after former Perth Bishop, Martin Griver. “Bishop Griver was a very significant figure in the early history of the Church here in Perth,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “Not only was he instrumental in the decision to build a larger Cathedral to meet the needs of a growing Catholic community, he was also a man of prayer who brought healing and stability to the Catholic community after a period of turmoil. “His life provides an inspiring example for all of us and I hope that the entire Catholic community of the
Archdiocese will be encouraged by his dedication and passion for the Church,” he said. “It is fitting that, for the first time, a significant institution in our Archdiocese is dedicated to his memory.” Born in Granollers, near Barcelona, Spain in 1814, Martin Griver entered the seminary at 14 and subsequently enrolled in philosophy, followed by medicine and surgery. In 1845, he qualified as a doctor and surgeon. Ordained a priest in 1847, the young clergyman volunteered for missionary work in the colony of Western Australia two year later because there were limited prospects for curates in Spain. Following the dispute between founding bishop of the diocese, John Brady, and Benedictine, Jose Maria Benito Serra, then Father Griver remained loyal to fellow Spaniard Serra. As the dispute unfolded, Fr Griver lived in a temporary monastery established by Serra in Guildford. Bishop Brady eventually left Western Australia and Serra was appointed Apostolic Administrator. initially made chaplain of the Perth and Fremantle congregations. The young missionary also made periodic visits to the outer districts, travelling up to 1,016 miles on horseback. When on pastoral tour, Fr Griver often slept in the rough or in whatever circumstances the Catholic people were situated. Vale Emeritus Bishop of Bunbury, Myles McKeon By the Communications Office, Archdiocese of Perth
FORMER Perth Auxiliary Bishop Myles McKeon, who was also the second Bishop of Bunbury, will be well remembered as a sociable individual who loved surrounding himself with people. Born in Drummin, Ireland on 3 April 1919, Bishop McKeon passed away on 2 May 2016 at the age of 97. Ordained fo r the Archdiocese of Perth on 22 June 1947, Bishop McKeon was later appointed the Auxiliary Bishop of Perth in 1962. He then went on to become the second Bishop of Bunbury, where he served from 1969 until his retirement because of ill health in 1982.
Bishop McKeon is well remembered as a kind and caring pastor. He was also one of the four Western Australian bishops who collaborated for the founding of the Catholic Education Commission and the Catholic Institution of Western Australia, both of which were unique in the world of that time. He is one of the last surviving members of the Second Vatican Council. In an interview with The Record newspaper in 2012, retired priest Fr Noel Fitzsimons, who worked with Bishop Myles when he was first appointed to Bunbury, said that the happiest years of the diocese were when Myles McKeon was Bishop. “Myles furnished the diocese… we had the Brothers looking after school leavers

and the senior schools, we had the Blessed Sacraments in the marketplace, we had the Carmelites praying for the diocese and, with Myles as Bishop, the Irish priests
were really happy,” Mr Fitzsimons said. The Bishop’s anthem, his friends recalled, was Sippin Soda and he would often sing the song at the request of others, who were happy to join in at the chorus. Bunbury priests affectionately described Bishop Myles McKeon as both a warm and gracious man whom you would not want to crack an Irish joke in front of, and as “the man who changed the face of the south-west diocese”. Designed as a stepping stone for those discerning their vocation, or simply for those wanting to know more about the priesthood, the website offers a number of platforms from which one may gain an insight into various aspects of discernment and priestly life. tion; Joys and Challenges of Priesthood and Advice for those Considering the Priesthood. Other areas worthy of mention are the section on discernment – a page which helps those who may be thinking about the priesthood understand some of the signs which may confirm
their calling; the formation page - a simple yet poignant explanation of the four pillars of formation and the FAQ page – an important part of the website which addresses some of the greatest questions surrounding the priesthood. Theme of mercy in the limelight at Catholic Youth Festival, Veritas 2016
The Ignite Youth Band delighted Veritas 2016 attendees with joy-filled music over the entire weekend.

GIVEN the overwhelming success of the Veritas Youth Festival in 2015, there were high hopes for another positive outcome for the festival this year. Unsurprisingly, Veritas 2016 did not disappoint and, given that it is only the second time it has ever been held, it looks like the event is here to stay. Held over the weekend of 22-24 April 2016 at Santa Maria College in Attadale, the Veritas Youth Festival was an initiative of the Catholic Youth Network - a collection of youth agencies, communities and movements from across the Archdiocese. The festival kicked off with a Friday night rally in which the theme of mercy was placed at the very centre of what would be a memorable weekend. One of the first speakers to highlight the importance of the theme was Perth Permanent Deacon Aaron Peters who offered an insightful presentation entitled Fishing for Mercy in which he explained how the power of God’s mercy can impact on whether we live our lives in a courageous, generous and true way. The talk was followed by a drama play performed by the Youth Mission Team and a speech by a Mercy Care representative. MercyCare and
Catholic Super were proud sponsors of the event. The second day of Veritas 2016 ensured participants would enter fully into the festival as the Ignite Youth music team put up a show that only a musically talented group such as theirs can offer. The day was filled with a number of insightful and informative talks by individuals and groups. Some of the presentations featured were: Remaining Catholic at College/Uni by the Murdoch University Catholic Chaplaincy; Being a Catholic Man in a Secular World by the Knights of the Southern Cross WA; ORANS: Praise and Worship workshop by Singles for Christ Australia; Discerning my Vocation by Fr Joseph Johnson; and Jesus Youth and Leading a youth group to be nothing like school

Another great highlight of the day was the discussion forum which saw Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and more than 180 young people engage in some of the more relevant and pressing issues of our times. Two of the questions posed by the Archbishop, which the participants then had time to discuss in groups and give an answer to, were “Why do many young people not go to Church”? and “How can the Church be merciful today?” The discussions revolving around the first question focused on a lack of understanding by young people of the teachings of the Catholic Church about the Mass as well as what was described by 24/7 Youth Ministry member Paul Crossley as a feeling of not being welcomed and

heard by the community in general. The second question urged people to speak about the intrinsic link between mercy and love in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. “Mercy intrinsically is bound to love,” Spearwood parishioner Syona Fernandez said. “We, as the Church, need to present the real truth while strongly holding on to the values and ideals of the Church,” she added. In his response, Archbishop Costelloe addressed the feedback of those who spoke and encouraged the audience to think about new ways in which youth can be brought to the Church. “The fundamental thing I heard is that many of us do not understand what the Mass is all about. Sometimes we think it’s about us, but it’s about God,” the Archbishop said. WALKING IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS: 170 YEARS OF MERCY COMMEMORATED THROUGH PILGRIMAGE To celebrate the work of Women in the Church, The eRecord will throughout the month of May publish a number of articles in each edition – often referred to as the month dedicated to the Virgin Mary – highlighting the active role and witness that a number of women and organisations from across the Archdiocese of Perth provide in spreading the Gospel. In this first article for the special feature for 2016, we take a look at the recent pilgrimage by the Sisters of Mercy which traced their journey through history. Pope Francis said “The Holy Door of Mercy” is a journey. This makes of us a Pilgrim. WHEN URSULA FRAYNE and her Mercy companions set foot on the Barrack Street jetty on 9 January 1846, they would not have envisaged that when they looked down the panorama of the years, the Sisters of Mercy and their friends would be celebrating their historic arrival 170 years later. On Saturday, 9 April 2016, a large crowd of Sisters of Mercy and their colleagues were presented with an experience of pilgrimage as part of those celebrations. The pilgrims met at the Bell Tower in Perth City at 9am where they were presented with a small guidebook outlining the pilgrimage route and containing quotes from Ursula Frayne’s letters written in 1866. The letters contained descriptions of that first pilgrimage journey into
Perth so many years ago. “It was quite a moving experience to see each small group of four or five pilgrims face the river and read the following passage which Ursula had written all those years before,” Sister of Mercy, Mollie Wright, said. “One of the passages we read went as follows: at length we came to the landing place, a veritable jetty, upon which were assembled a crowd of sightseers, a few of whom hailed us with delight. Others looked on with indifference, and a greater number with positive displeasure”. At various points along the pilgrimage way, further quotes from Ursula’s Sketches were read and discussed. On arriving at Perth’s Pro-Cathedral, the pilgrims entered and read the following extract from Ursula.

At long last we stopped at the Catholic Church, entered, returned thanks to Almighty God for His watchful care over us during the voyage, and for bringing us safely to our journey’s end. A few minutes sufficed for this duty. We arose from our kneeling position and walked out from the Church expecting to be conducted to the house provided for us, but alas! Our arrival was totally unexpected. We stood in the wilds of Australia on that midsummer night and we could truly say with our Divine Model “We have nowhere to rest our heads”. The pilgrims continued on their way and entered the Mercy Convent at Victoria Square through the front door, from where many took advantage of their visit to walk around the Heritage Centre and absorb a sense
of what it was like for those early Sisters, in that convent built by the Fenians in 1871. In the convent’s Music Room, through which hundreds of pupils had passed, pilgrims were met by Mercedes pupils playing on the grand piano. All those who had participated in the pilgrimage then joined with those who had been unable to walk, in sharing a delicious morning tea. Over 100 persons were involved in the memorable occasion. The morning tea was followed by a Liturgy for the opening of the Local Door of Mercy, which including a reading from Pope Francis’ Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction for the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
