EASTER 2016: Christ is present,
close to us, says Archbishop Costelloe By Jamie O’Brien
THERE ARE two words which can help us as we seek to allow the mystery of the Easter Vigil to enter into our own daily lives, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe told the congregation who last weekend gathered at St Mary’s Cathedral for the Easter Vigil. The first is ‘fidelity’ and the second is ‘presence’, the Archbishop continued. “Jesus died on the cross because he was, above all else, a man of fidelity,” he said. “As disciples of Jesus, and that is what brings us to the Cathedral tonight, we too are being called to live faithful lives in imitation of him: faithful to God, faithful to his Church, faithful to our families and friends, faithful to our brothers and sisters who, together with us, make up the family of humanity.” The Archbishop went on to

explain that during his lifetime, Jesus was not always surrounded by faithful followers, but that if we read the Gospels carefully, one thing becomes very clear: Jesus never fails his failing disciples. “He never walks away from them, even when they walk away from him. And he will never walk away from us, no

matter how often we seek to distance ourselves from him.” “Jesus is present to us, close to us, always holding his hand out to us, and never willing to give up on us. Ultimately this is what the resurrection is all about.” The Archbishop concelebrated the Vigil with Vicar General Fr Peter Whitely, Cathedral Dean Mgr Michael Keating, Fr Brennan Sia, Fr Greg Donovan, Fr Jeffey Casabuena, Fr Richard Rutkauskas and Fr Michael Quynh Do and Deacon Paul Russell. The celebration also included the baptism of 13 catechumens and welcoming into the Church of two candidates. Another two were also confirmed. In parishes across the Archdiocese of Perth, Easter was celebrated with much peace, reverence and renewed focus on the risen
Christ – with several parishes responding to the invitation by The eRecord to send in news and photos. Glendalough Parish reported four new members being received into the Church, with the sacrament of initiation being conferred on Yvonne Chia, together with father and son Mark and Dylan Scoby-Smith, while Szyka Anne Stevens received her Confirmation and First Communion. At Good Shepherd Parish Lockridge, ALIVE Youth Ministry presented the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. Youth leader Samuel Smith said the occasion is a time for the people of the parish to witness the final moments of Jesus life, and to sit and contemplate his message of love. Full Text available at

OBITUARY: Monsignor
James Francis Nestor By Rachel Curry
Catholic education as we know it today wouldn’t be the same without Monsignor James Francis Nestor, who passed away on 22 February, just a few months shy of his 90th birthday. Born and raised in Ireland, Mgr Nestor was the inaugural Director of the Catholic Education Office of WA and later served as the muchloved parish priest at Holy Rosary Parish in Nedlands. Long-time friends, Father Geoff Aldous and Rosemary Hill, shared their memories of this intelligent, gentle and humble man with The eRecord journalist, Rachel Curry. The article below also contains excerpts of the eulogy by friend and colleague, Dr Peter Tannock. JAMES FRANCIS NESTOR – who also went by the names Jim, Jimmy, or simply Mons – was born on 15 October 1926 in Dunmore, County Galway, in the west of Ireland. The fifth and last child of John and Mary Nestor, he distinguished himself at an early age through his outstanding intellect, winning a competitive scholarship to board at a Catholic secondary school. Upon his graduation in 1945, he gained entry to the famous Irish national seminary at Maynooth, near Dublin, having long before decided to enter the priesthood. Simultaneously commencing a degree in Celtic Studies at the National University of Ireland – from which he graduated with first class honours – he was destined for a career as a diocesan priest in the west of Ireland, before a devastat-
ing tuberculosis diagnosis in 1949 changed the course of his life. He had to leave the seminary and spent 18 months in a chest hospital in Dublin and two years convalescing at his home in Garrafraums in the care of his mother. Mgr Nestor’s illness could not dissuade him from his vocation and, once recovered, he returned to Dublin and entered the famous All Hallows Seminary, which prepared priests specifically for foreign missions. His state of health had prompted thoughts of a warmer climate and, upon his ordination in 1956, he obtained sponsorship from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the United States. Fortunately for the state of Western Australia, his visa application was denied by US immigration officials due to his tuberculosis background and, instead, he was sent to the Archdiocese of Perth, where he began work as a curate at Our Lady of

Victories in Wembley. The move ‘down under’ suited Mgr Nestor well. He fell in love with the Australian bush and developed an irrational devotion to Australian Rules football (especially Subiaco Football Club and the West Coast Eagles). While he became an Australia citizen in 1986, he always kept in touch with his family in Ireland and retained a strong connection to his homeland. His friend of more than 50
years, Fr Geoff Aldous, said he was often brought to laughter by his mate’s “Irish wit and turn of phrase”. As for his faith, Mgr Nestor was a great man of prayer, rising early each day to pray quietly for an hour, and reflecting on the great mysteries of life and death. “That would be the way he had an effect on me, a quite profound effect,” Fr Geoff recalled. BLESSING OF OILS AND RENEWAL OF PROMISES:
CHRISM MASS 2016
By Marco Ceccarelli
AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, the Chrism Mass hosted at St Mary’s Cathedral drew hundreds of people this year as clergy and laity renewed their promises of commitment to holiness of life and to service of the Church and society. Held on Tuesday, 22 March, the Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and concelebrated by Auxiliary Bi shop Don Sproxton, Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey, Vicar General Fr Peter Whitely, Monsignor Brian O’Loughlin, Monsignor Michael Keating and numerous priests of the Archdiocese. The Mass saw the blessing of three holy oils by Archbishop Costelloe to be used by clergy in the Sacraments of Confirmation, Ordination, Anointing of the Sick and Baptism throughout the year. These were the Oil of the Chrism, the Oil of the Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick. Dwelling on the importance of the oils in his homily, Archbishop Costelloe recalled
the recent ordinations to the priesthood of four deacons within our Archdiocese and drew attention to the anointing of the new priests’ hands. “The Oil of Chrism which is consecrated during our Mass this evening is used for this anointing. The same oil, of course, is also used during Confirmation and during the celebration of our Baptism. In this way, the Church gives powerful expression to the centrality of the Sacraments of Initiation without which the ordained ministry makes no sense,” the Archbishop said. Archbishop Costelloe went on to emphasise that the whole people of God, which included those present, are, through Baptism and Confirmation, consecrated as a priestly people, called to live sacrificial lives of love for others in accordance with the example left by Jesus Christ. “What the priesthood of Jesus, in which we all share, reveals to us, is that the one real sacrifice pleasing to God is the sacrifice we make of ourselves in generous love for God and for God’s people, in imitation of Jesus,” he said. “Christian priesthood is not just lived out in the liturgy: it

is lived out in the concrete, often mundane and always challenging reality of our daily lives,” he later added. In the context of a Mass that also celebrated the gift of ordained priesthood – a gift which the Archdiocese of Perth has received in abundance – Archbishop Costelloe explained that the celebration was not about one group in particular, but about the Church as a whole: a priestly people. He concluded by stating that this “wholeness” of the
Church is a cause for rejoicing, “because, with a brother’s love, the Lord chooses men from among our number, shapes and moulds them into the likeness of His own servant priesthood, and then returns them to us to be our servants who will journey with us and keep alive for us the Lord’s presence as our Good Shepherd, the healer of our souls and our strength and nourishment along the way”. Vocational support finds a new
home in Perth Archdiocese By Caroline Smith
THE ARCHDIOCESE of Perth has reinforced its dedication to vocations – particularly to the diocesan priesthood – with the creation of a new Vocations Office in Victoria Square. Vocations Director Fr Jean-Noël Marie said he was excited about this new initiative, which will both promote vocations within the Archdiocese and provide support for those who are discerning their vocation. “In Perth, we’ve never had a place that is exclusively ‘vocations focused’, a place from which we can promote vocations, or an address where people can contact us,” he said. “But now we have an address – this is a very exciting initiative of the Archbishop; it marks a new beginning.” Fr Jean-Noël Marie went on to say that the aim of this new initiative is to instil into the Archdiocese of Perth a culture of vocations, and that the Archbishop has been very gracious in providing the much needed space for the office to open. “This centre, which is accessible to everybody, along with the resources which have been made available, will enable us to develop and produce the necessary mate-

rial and support in our relentless campaign of promotion of vocations,” Fr Marie said. Fr Marie also explained that he and Assistant Vocations Director Fr Mark Baumgarten are hoping the Vocations Office will be officially launched sometime after Easter, but that their work had already begun in terms of meeting people and developing resources, including a forthcoming website and promotional videos. Commenting on the initiative, Fr Baumgarten said the decision to create a dedicated office for vocations would be a boon for the Archdiocese. “This is a real opportunity to professionalise vocations promotion and make it a lot
more deliberate, with specific strategies and focus,” he said. While the Vocations Office is not directly connected to Perth’s seminaries, Fr Marie said that the seminaries would also play a role, particularly with men who are seriously considering an application. “The seminary comes in at a later stage in our discussions, once we feel that ‘this could be a good candidate’ and they are getting closer to making up their own mind about pursuing the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Perth,” he said. “They may have some questions about formation or the lifestyle, and we can arrange a visit to the seminary, to have lunch there and let them see for themselves.”
Fr Baumgarten said the office’s work would be founded on ‘four Ps’: prayer, presence, promotion and planting seeds, adding that the Archdiocese’s Lenten campaign of praying the Rosary each Thursday for vocations was a good example of the first. “Presence means being present at things such as various youth events, going into high schools, and so forth,” he said. “Promotion refers to things like the forthcoming website, or to more conventional materials such as posters and postcards. Some of these have been present previously, but we are striving for it to become more coordinated and organised.” Full Text available at
