Archbishop Costelloe issues Pastoral letter ahead of final Royal Commission hearings ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY COSTELLOE has this week encouraged the Perth Catholic community to pray for the work of the Royal Commission, as it begins to bring its public hearings to a conclusion. In a Pastoral Letter issued to all Catholic parishes across the Archdiocese of Perth, the Archbishop said a call to prayer must never be seen as a substitute for decisive, transparent and effective action in relation to the horror of sexual abuse. “Our faith assures us that if our actions are deeply grounded in our openness to God’s grace then they will produce the fruit we, and the whole of our society, so desperately want to see,” the Archbishop said. “I ask you too, to continue to pray for the victims and survivors of sexual abuse in our Church,” the Archbishop said. The final hearings of the Royal Commi ssion into In st itut ion al Responses to Child Sexual Abuse are scheduled to run for six weeks from 6 February, with the first three weeks to be devoted to an investigation into the response of the Catholic Church in Australia to the tragic scandal of sexual abuse in Catholic parishes, schools, orphanages and other institutions. “These last public hearings of the Royal Commission will inevitably be a stressful and painful time for many,” the Archbishop continued. “Paradoxically it might also be a time of healing,” he said. “As a community we are deeply shamed by the failures of so many in our Church in relation to the care of our children and young people. “More than this we are horrified by the suffering which has been inflicted on so many innocent people.

“As I have in the past, I once again express our profound sorrow and apology for this shocking failure on our part and for the pain it has caused to so many. As a Church we are committed now to doing everything we can to ensure that this evil is eradicated from our midst. The Archbishop went on to explain that the Church’s lamentable record of child protection in times gone past will be painful for all of us. “It is important that we recognise the gift which the Royal Commission has been and continues to be, not just for the Catholic Church in Australia, but for our society as a whole.

“The prevalence of sexual abuse of children and young people in so many institutional settings in Australia, including the churches, indicates that there is a sickness at the heart of our nation which simply must be addressed. “This sickness has been particularly evident in the history of our own Church and we must honestly and unflinchingly confront the reasons for this. The first step, the Archbishop noted, is to shine a light on the dark corners of our Church and society. Full Text available at

Jamie O’Brien and Rachel Curry

IT HAS BEEN an exciting start to the year for the Archdiocese of Perth, with three new directors bringing a mix of innovation and experience to their roles. Director of Archives, Odhran O’Brien; Director of the Centre for Faith Enrichment (CFE), Marco Ceccarelli and Director of The Shopfront, Damian Walsh were all recently appointed to their positions, but they are far from strangers to the Archdiocese. Mr O’Brien will start at the Archives in mid-February, after previously working as Manager of Heritage for the Archdiocese of Perth and Heritage Advisor for the Town of Claremont. He is also completing a PhD in History at the University of Western Australia. Originally from County Galway in Ireland, Mr O’Brien has spent most of his life in Perth. He told The eRecord that he was passionate about preserving the history of the Catholic Church in WA. “The Catholic Archives contains the records of the past archbishops and bishops; it also holds many other documents which tell the story of the faith in WA and

those who worked diligently to cement it here,” he said. “I am honoured to help conserve that story for future generations.” Mr O’Brien, who is soon to become a father for the first time, said there were many things he hoped to achieve in his new role at the Archives. “Foremost I hope to boost its research profile and begin a major digitisation program for its most fragile documents, many of which are 19th century,” he said. “There is a very rich collection in the Archdiocesan Archives, which links into New Norcia, the State Records Office and many other important collections. “We need to ensure that the collection’s potential to tell the story of local Catholic

history, as well as that of WA, is maximised.” The new Director of CFE, Dr Ceccarelli, will also be familiar to many in the Archdiocese. A former lecturer in History and European Studies at the University of WA, Dr Ceccarelli has spent the past two years working as a Journalist at the Archdiocese Communications Office. He b e l ie ve s t he s e experiences will hold him in good stead in his new role. “I bring more than a decade of experience teaching in higher education, developing, promoting and coordinating courses for adults, combined with a passion for adult faith and knowledge of our Archdiocese,” he said. “I also believe that having

worked two years in the Archdiocese as a journalist will go a long way in helping me effectively communicate with the community and attract people to see the richness of the CFE’s courses.” Dr Ceccarelli hails from Rome, but moved to Perth with his parents and five siblings at the age of 10. A member of Mirrabooka Parish, he said his faith had been at the front and centre of some of the biggest decisions in his life, including his choice of studies, career and family. “It continues to shape me and helps me (despite many setbacks) to break out of a narrow vision of life and seek to know God more and more,” he said. “While there have been times, particularly in my teenage years, in which I questioned my faith and could feel that it wasn’t playing a dominant role in my life, I have felt that God has always come to search for me to bring me back into the Christian community.” The new Director of The Shopfront, Mr Walsh, also places faith at the centre of his life as a member of East Victoria Park Parish. FR GROWNEY’S LIFE OF SERVICE AND GENEROSITY REMEMBERED AT MEMORIAL SERVICE By Caroline Smith

FOLLOWING A PRIESTLY CAREER which spanned 30 years including service to Catholic communities across Australia and the United Kingdom, Father Peter Growney has been remembered as a kind man who always had time for others. Fr Growney died on 14 January at Castledare Village Nursing Home in Wilson, and a week later, a memorial Mass was held for him at St Gerard Majella Church in Mirrabooka – the first parish where he served after arriving in Australia in 1985. The Mass – held on Tuesday January 24 – was celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and con-celebrated by Bishop Donald Sproxton, VicarGeneral the Very Rev Peter Whitely, Fr Geoff Aldous, Mirrabooka Parish Priest Fr Giosue Marini, Fr Sean Fernandez, Fr Greg Donovan, Fr Michael Do, Fr Joe Pelle, Fr Michael Moore, Fr Huynh Nguyen, Fr Thomas Zureich, Fr Greg Carroll, Fr Tim Corcoran, Fr Phillip Perreau, Fr Tadgh Tierney OCD, Fr Vincent Conroy and Fr Benny Calanza. Fr Growney was born in County Meath, Ireland in 1940 and ordained to the priesthood 45 years later, in June 1985. Three months later, he moved to Australia to work for the Archdiocese of Perth and became Assistant Parish Priest at Mirrabooka. He then moved out to rural Western

Australia, where he served as Parish Priest in the Wheatbelt towns of Beverley and Southern Cross. Following these roles, Fr Growney moved into chaplaincy work: first at Subiaco’s St John of God Hospital, and then in the London suburb of Southwark, following his move to the United Kingdom in 1995. After ten years in London, he returned to Australia and to Southern Cross Parish, where he worked for two years. In 2007, he returned to his native Ireland, but came back to Perth in 2012. In his homily for the occasion, Baldivis Parish Priest and friend Fr Geoff Aldous, spoke about the life and humorous

personality of Fr Growney, describing him as a man of quiet character, who was always there to lend a friendly voice and a listening ear. “He was very humble and gentle, very gracious but always helpful and great to have around,” he said. “I think the thing that stands out for me in the life of (Fr) Peter was his humility and spirit of simplicity. The simplicity of the Gospel and the simplicity of faith.” Fr Aldous recounted some of the Fr Growney’s experiences upon arriving in Australia, including his initial impressions of the country’s geography. “After he’d been here for a while, he asked if he could go away for a couple of weeks – he said he wanted to look around the country,” Fr Aldous said. “And I said, where do you want to go Peter? And he said, I was thinking of going up Queensland way, up the Gold Coast and that. Archdiocesan Communications Manager Jamie O’Brien also spoke about his own memories of Fr Growney as a family friend and during his time as Assistant Parish Priest at Mirrabooka. “Fr Growney was a great friend and teacher of liturgy to the many volunteers at Mirrabooka Parish,” Mr O’Brien said. “He also generously dedicated his time supporting the Acolytes and Altar Servers.” Full Text available at

Papal Blessing the icing on the cake

50 years of marriage

By Caroline Smith

F L OR E AT W EMBLEY par ishioners Ivan and Barbara Colgan last year celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a particular honour, receiving a Papal Blessing which was presented to them by Parish Priest, Father Andrew Albis. Mr and Mrs Colgan celebrated their anniversary on Saturday 15 October 2016, with Fr Albis celebrating Mass for them that morning at Floreat-Wembley Parish. The couple have been active members of the parish for more than 40 years, with Mr Colgan serving as an acolyte, with Mrs Colgan being involved in the Sacramental Program and taking on other volunteering roles.

However, they first met in Bunbury where they were also involved in Church activities, as members of the Young Christian Workers (YCW). “At one stage Ivan was the boys’ secretary and I was the girls’ president,” Mrs Colgan said. “We were married in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Bunbury by Fr Kevin Johnston, and the YCW group combined as a choir and sang at the Mass.” After their wedding in 1966, the couple remained in Bunbury for a few years, before settling in Perth and becoming members of the Floreat-Wembley Parish. Mrs Colgan said that involvement in the parish community was one of the highlights of their marriage, along with their children. Floreat Wembley parishioners Ivan and Barbara Colgan last year recognised their 50th wedding anniversary with a particular honour, receiving a Papal Blessing which was presented to them by their Parish Priest Father Andrew Albis.

“We have three children: Stephen, Nat h an and Anthea, followed by seven grandchildren,” she said. “Watching them all achieve in their various careers, and the grandchildren with their schooling and sporting prowess has been great. “We are very fortunate to have a strong parish family who support us. “That is one of the highlights for us, to have such loyal friends both in FloreatWembley, and outside, our family and our faith, which keeps a marriage intact.”

The Papal Blessing had been a lovely addition to their anniversary celebration, Mrs Colgan added, especially since the parish community was also involved. “Fr Andrew presented us with the Papal Blessing after a Sunday Mass with the congregation present,” she said. “It was a huge honour, and the Blessing now takes pride of place on our entrance wall.” Full Text available at
