Ensuring the elderly have their rightful place at the table By Marco Ceccarelli

ALMOST TWO MONTHS after the release of the 2016 ACBC Social Justice Statement, A Place at the Table, which celebrated “the great success story of our ageing population,” Archbishop Timothy Costelloe blessed the new Burswood Head Office of Catholic Homes, a Christian based, not-for-profit aged care organisation. The blessing took place on 17 November and coincided with the one-year anniversary of the new office’s grand opening. Praising the organisation’s ap p r o a c h to c a r i n g, Archbishop Costelloe spoke of the values on which Catholic Homes is founded and highlighted the importance of hospitality and dignity

when dealing with Australia’s ageing population. “Your values of joy, love and hospitality are a true statement of what Catholic Homes is all about. You have made hospitality your specialit y,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “Catholic Homes has captured what we would like

a carer for the elderly to be, as well as having a special focus on maintaining dignity; that is a core value to the Catholic faith.” The Archbishop’s words were followed by those of Chairman of Catholic Homes, Peter Messer, who spoke of the organisation’s impressive growth from only

one residence in 1965 to the formidable seven residences, four retirement living villages, the Care at Home service and the Day Therapy Centre it has today. Catholic Homes has been caring for ageing Western Australians for more than 50 years. Its first priority is happiness, wellbeing and the creation of an environment of love, trust and respect for those in its care. Catholic Homes’ innovative and proactive approach to care earned it two Better Practice Awards in 2015 for its care model and the Circle of Men project - a support and social group for men in aged care.

Illuminations concert shines light

on local talent and acts of mercy By Daniele Foti-Cuzzola

AS THE YEAR OF MERCY came to a close on the Feast of Christ the King, MercyCare celebrated the end of the Jubilee Year with a world class concert that aimed to shine a light on acts of mercy within the community. Illuminations, as the concert was titled, saw hundreds of music aficionados take advantage of a rare chance to witness high-calibre performances from chorale group Lux et Veritas and chamber orchestra Camerata 1685. The stunning setting of St Mary’s Cathedral gave an extra element of beauty to an already mesmerising musical and visual experience. Attendees were moved by the stunning vocals from Lux et Veritas and were then treated to an equally mesmerising performance from Camerata 1685, which features the crème de la crème of Western Australia’s professional musicians. Internationally acclaimed Jangoo Chapkhana was the conductor for the evening. A graduate from the highly prestigious Peter the Great Academy of Music, Chapkhana captivated the audience with his compelling interpretations of the sacred repertoire and his precise conducting style.

Currently the Director of Music at Trinity Uniting Church, where he has held the baton for over 10 years, Chapkhana completed his postgraduate conducting studies in Florence and St Petersburg and has toured around the world as an organist, performing in venues such as Westminster Abbey, the Washington National Cathedral and New

York’s St Mary The Virgin. Despite his hectic schedule, which includes upcoming organ recitals in New York City, Como and Dusseldorf, Chapkhana has managed to find the time to be the founder and artistic director of both Lux et Veritas and Camerata 1685. Both groups were established in Perth in 2013. After the concert, guests were invited to view a

photographic exhibition which showcased some of the ground-breaking initiatives and programs taking place within a number of Perth’s Catholic schools, including Aranmore Catholic College, Mercedes College, Santa Maria College and St Brigid’s College. One such program is Santa Maria’s annual Cambodia Immersion Program, which sees Year 11 and 12 students travelling to Cambodia to learn about the country’s history and culture, while taking on tasks within the local communities. Aranmore College’s New Arrivals Learning Centre also featured in the exhibition. The centre provides newly arrived children and teenagers from the ages of 11 to 17 with intensive exposure to the English language, cultural awareness and social skills that will assist them in the Australian high school system. Both the Illuminations concert and photo exhibition were a fitting way to close the end of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, and also appropriately coincided with the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy to Perth, who have continued to a shine a light within the Archdiocese ever since. LAUDATO SI OFFERS UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO OUR RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS CREATION, SAYS ECO-THEOLOGIAN By Caroline Smith

ATTENDEES at a recent talk by Irish ecotheologian Father Sean McDonagh were told that Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si marked a significant shift in Catholic social teaching, and offered a new vision of interaction between human beings and the rest of creation. Approximately 100 people attended the lecture at the Redemptorist Monastery in North Perth on Saturday, 19 November, where Fr McDonagh – a Columban missionary who has written extensively on environmental degradation - explained how Laudato Si addressed both the magnitude and urgency of this issue. “I think it’s the most important document to have come from Rome since Catholic social teaching began in 1891 with Rerum Novarum, which means ‘new things’, by Pope Leo XIII,” he said. “It’s an extraordinary presentation of the contemporary ecological issues facing the planet. It’s also a very evangelical document: it’s the kind of document that if someone asks you, ‘What are the major challenges in the first part of the 21st century?’ they are contained within this document.” Fr McDonagh explained that the encyclical was the first example of theological teachings which addressed these challenges together, including climate change and its effect on the poor, the destruction of biodiversity, water and air pollution, the impact of extractive industries and waste. He also said that the text broke new ground by referencing past and present religious figures who had advocated for the environment, from Saint Francis of Assisi to Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, who has described acts of ecological destruction as ‘sins’. By including this, Pope Francis introduced a new kind of Christian morality: one which calls on the faithful to consider environmental issues as key responsibilities, he said. “For the first 2000 years of Christian history, we focused on our human relationships and our relationship with God,” Fr McDonagh said.

“Christians knew it was wrong to steal, to worship false gods, however the majority of Christians never thought it was wrong to devastate the forest or drain the marshes. They never thought it was wrong to plough up the prairies in the 19th century, to cut down the forests of my own country in the second millennium, to do the kind of mining you’re doing here in Australia, or what was done to tropical forests.” He said there were several reasons for this, including a traditional division in Christian thought between humans and the rest of creation, and an antagonism towards the natural

world brought about, in part, by the experience of the Black Plague. By contrast, Laudato Si referenced the Hebrew Scriptures as a call from God for human beings to become more engaged with the rest of creation, rather than just taking advantage of it. His Perth lecture – organised by the Archdiocese’s Centre for Faith Enrichment and the Justice Ecology and Development Office - was part of a speaking tour which will include an address to the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference in the eastern states. 2016 ARCHBISHOP ’S CHRISTMA S APPE AL FOR LIFELINK:

DIGNITY AT THE HEART OF CENTACARE’S 40-YEAR MISSION

Centacare Employment and Training Executive Director Lee-Anne Phillips cuts the cake to mark the not-for-profit organisation’s 40-year anniversary. PHOTO: RACHEL CURRY

By Rachel Curry

“THE BEST TEACHERS are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see.” Wit h t he se word s, Centacare Employment and Training Executive Director Lee-Anne Phillips wrapped up the celebrations for the not-for-profit organisation’s 40-year anniversary at its West Perth training centre on Friday, 18 November. It was a fitting sentiment for an organisation that has always had at its core a Christian ethos which supports the worth and dignity of every person and their right to gain the skills and qualifications for participation in the workforce. Founded in 1976 as an agency of the Archdiocese of Perth, Centacare has survived numerous changes in government and funding models over the past four decades to become the thriving organisation it is today.

This fact was not lost on Ms Phillips, who addressed staff, volunteers and special guests, including board members Pat Doody and Ann Anderton and Archdiocese of Perth CEO-Administration, Greg Russo, at the celebrations. “Not many not-for-profit organisations stay the course of time to celebrate 40 years of service to the community, but this is exactly what Centacare Employment and Training has been able to achieve,” she said. “It seems to me that the 40 years of Centacare have been like a relay race, with individuals and teams picking up the baton, running with it for some years, sometimes many, and then handing it on. “It is a tribute to the many staff, volunteers, the board and supporters who have run this race with us.” Chair of the Board, Gwen Wood, also spoke at the celebrations, recalling how she first discovered the devastation unemployment

could wreak on young people and families in the early 1970s. LifeLink agencies such as Centacare Employment and Training reach out to help more than 34,000 Western Australians in need each year, through the provision of accommodation, food, clothing, emergency assistance, counselling, and the protection of women and children escaping domestic violence and abuse. The Ar c h b i sh o p ’s Christmas Appeal for LifeLink

was officially launched in parishes throughout the Archdiocese on the weekend of 19-20 November 2016. This is the only appeal conducted in parishes each year to help support welfare delivery in the Archdiocese of Perth.
