24 hours of ‘Mercy’ for the Lord By Jamie O’Brien MERCY is the missing ingredient to our adult faith if we remain at the level of knowledge, said Director of the Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation, Dr Michelle Jones, as Archbishop Timot hy Costelloe SDB this week extended a welcome invitation to Catholics across the Archdiocese to once again respond to Pope Francis’ 24-Hours-For-The-Lord initiative. Now in its second year, the initiative is a special time for prayer and confessions during the time of Lent, and in 2015 will take place on Friday, 13 March and Saturday, 14 March. The Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation has advised that the theme for 2015, intended to guide reflections over the two days, is “God rich in Mercy” (Ephesians 2:4). In a letter to all priests across Perth, Archbishop Costelloe said that some parishes may begin the 24-hour period with a specially designed liturgical celebration on the Friday evening. “This might include the Stations of the Cross, a special penitential service, or exposition of the Blessed Sacrament,” the Archbishop said. “Some parishes might consider leaving the Church open until midnight for private prayer. “You might also make yourself available for some of that time for the Sacrament of Penance.” In an interview with Archdiocese of Perth Communications and Media Office Editor Jamie O’Brien,

“They are all interrelated,” Dr Jones said. “It is one thing to have knowledge about the truths of revelation, but it is another thing to contemplate those truths in the radiance of God’s love,” Dr Jones said.

“God isn’t a puppet we can manipulate, but a mystery of love who will always be greater than our knowledge.” Dr Jones went on to talk about how this year’s theme for the 24-Hours-For-TheLord initiative can bring greater meaning for those looking to deepen their faith as adult Christians. Dr Jones said that when it comes to adult faith formation, mercy - together with knowledge, love and wisdom - are the key ingredients.

Dr Jones went on to explain that mercy is wisdom in action. “To act mercifully is to act from the truths of our faith, always allowing those truths to be imbued and surrounded by the uncontainable mystery of God’s love,” she said. “This makes us humble, reverent, and gentle with

each other and the world around us. “Mercy is the missing ingredient to our adult faith formation if we only remain at the level of knowledge. “Our knowledge must always be penetrated by love.” Dr Jones also explained that to be an adult Christian is to be childlike. “This is the great Gospel paradox. St John Bosco College opens in Piara Waters By Marco Ceccarelli ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe last week said that he was thrilled to bestow his blessing on the first school in WA bearing the name of the founder of his order, Don Bosco. The blessing and official opening of the new, architecturally stunning St John Bosco College, in Piara Waters, Perth, took place on Friday, 27 February 2015 with students, teachers, parents and dignitaries in attendance. Fo r the Salesian Archbishop, the opening of the school was, in his own words, “a very special occasion”, particularly since this year marks the bicentenary of the birth of his Salesian father, St John Bosco. Special guests present for the event, in addition to Archbishop Costelloe, were Executive Director of Catholic Education WA Dr Tim McDonald, Senior Media and Communications Advisor of Catholic Education WA Trish Miller, Federal Member for Canning Don Randall MP, Representative for the Minister for Education the Hon Ms Donna Faragher and St Francis Xavier Armadale parish priest, Fr Kaz Stuglik. The opening ceremony commenced with the singing of the Australian national anthem, followed by a welcome introduction by Mr Sheehy and a cultural smoking ceremony to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land by Noongar elders Marie Taylor and Robyn Connard. Addressing the students present, Archbishop Costelloe spoke briefly about St John Bosco - traditionally referred to as ‘Don’ Bosco, which is Father in Italian - explaining that this Italian saint EDITION #21 | 6 MARCH 2015

“St John Bosco said you have to love young people in such a way that they know without any doubt that you love them.” I’m very happy that the school has been named after St John Bosco.” The Archbishop went on to say that St John Bosco was also a talented educator whose teaching philosophy

“He said you have to love them in such a way that they know without any doubt that you love them. “What he meant is that love has to be real, and concrete and practical, and adapted to

the reality of the person that you love.” “That’s the secret of St John Bosco and I hope that this will be the secret of the school,” the Archbishop added. Addressing those present, Dr McDonald picked up on the Archbishop’s comments regarding St John Bosco and pointed to the motto on the students’ shirts, which reads Joy in Learning, as the goal towards which the school should constantly be working. Dr Tan: A theology of running away By Marco Ceccarelli ONE MAY wonder what U2’s famous song Where the streets have no name could possibly have in common with the Book of Exodus, or what connection could be made between rock/metal band Evanescence’ s Anywhere and St John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul. Further curiosity is aroused when car and holiday advertisements and Hollywood films such as Leaving Las Vegas are said to have some form of theological significance. Yet these were precisely the themes discussed by Sydney theologian Matthew Tan at the recent Dawson Society for Philosophy and Culture Speakers’ Forum, held on Tuesday, 24 February at Rosie O’Grady’s, Northbridge, Perth.

In his talk, entitled ‘Take Me With You: A Theology of Running Away,’ Dr Tan drew comparisons between narratives of escape within the postmodern city and the Bible, arguing that the much glamorised idea of escaping from the stifling city environment retains profound theological meaning.

Dr Tan introduced a discussion of the “displaced”, postmodern individual who is constantly led astray by the lures of consumer society. He explained that while

“...I think there are also severe divergences which we can not ignore when we see them through a theological light.” “This narrative of escape, this call to run away, works on an impulse that the Christian tradition regards as good and God-given,” Dr Tan said, setting up the premise of his talk. “So one might find profound similarities between the Christian and pop cultural takes on the soul’s escape

we live as displaced citizens of the postmodern City of Man, where our exhausted souls search for fulfilment, displacement can simultaneously occur within what St Augustine calls the City of God, the Body of Christ, where our souls can be at rest. To explain this, Dr Tan thus

engaged in an analysis of similarities and divergences of the notion of “escape” in popular culture and the Bible. In regard to similarities, he drew comparisons between notions of escape and entrapment within pop songs such as U2’s Where the streets have no name and Tracey Chapman’s Fast Car, and the desire for liberation in Exodus 2:23, where God facilitates Israel’s escape from slavery in Egypt into the Sinai desert. Dr Tan is a lecturer in theology and philosophy at Campion College. Fresh fire ignites youth at event in Ocean Reef By James Parker “THE WHOLE event just made me want to connect with God,” said 13-year-old high school student, Stefan, as he left Perth’s first Ignite Youth event recently, held at Prendiville Catholic College in Ocean Reef. From helpful carpark attendants to allocated games’ facilitators, seamless highquality video presentations to relevant Gospel teaching, plus a national sporting hero and the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, this was an evening that was loud, bright, smooth, dark – and very slick. Amidst the several hundred young people present, from young teens upwards, there was a feel of the United Nations with every culture and language group present. Although inspired and partly led by a handful of fly-ins from Brisbane, the majority of those heading up the event and serving in different roles were all home-grown youth from the Archdiocese of Perth. Following a time of praise and worship that would rival any Hillsong or Riverview celebration, special guest Jason Behrendorff appeared on stage. Behrendorff, 24, who, some weeks ago, was named cricket’s Domestic Player of the Year and is currently listed with Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers, spoke firmly about the role of faith in his life. “The biggest test for my faith was moving from Canberra to Perth,” he said. “Although I had been raised

as a Christian, it was suddenly up to me if I wanted to continue with my faith journey. “In all honesty, I threw my toys out of the cot at first. But I eventually came to realise that it’s not about my timing or my plan; it’s about God’s

Today, I am trusting in Him.” The evening’s theme of One Love was then highlighted through an engaging and humorous presentation given by Northam Religious Education teacher and WAFL field umpire, Ryan Shelton. “God doesn’t force Himself onto us,” said Ryan, “but, rather, gives Himself to us and makes Himself freely availa-

the lighting dimmed, the music softened and Perth’s youth were invited to experience God’s presence. Many responded to the invitation to say “yes” to Christ through prayer, through Reconciliation and through the action of visiting the large Cross present in the auditorium. Benedict XVI at World Youth Day in 2009 which state that “the main task for us all is that of a new evangelisation aimed at helping younger generations to rediscover the true face of God, who is Love”. If this first Ignite Youth evening is anything to go by, then the young people of Perth certainly have a vehicle to help them to achieve this. With five more similar evenings planned across the metropolitan area this year on 17 April, 19 June, 14 August, 16 October and 27 November, it seems the time has come to get the school or parish minibus fired up and filled with youth on a Friday night. At the end of the evening, Behrendorff was only full of praise. Full Text available at
