Cultural food night fosters diversity A COMMUNITY food night proved to be an exciting demonstration of the benefits of the diversity of Perth recently. On Friday September 26, Personal Advocacy Service partnered with Infant Jesus Parish Morley and local community members to hold “Hoppers Night” – a fundraising night bringing together people of all ages and abilities to experience cultural diversity through food and dance. Hoppers are a Sri Lankan-Indian speciality that consist of a bowl shaped rice pancake eaten with curry. Personal Advocacy Service Director Anabelle May said people of all abilities joined in the fun, food and entertainment. “The event brought

about a deeper awareness of peoples willingness to taste food of traditional Sri Lankan and Indian origin. “Many of those that attended also got into the mood by dressing in dif-

ferent ethnic clothes and were well entertained by an accomplished classical Indian dancer,” Ms May said. Bollywood dancers were also part of the event and

helped the crowd to join in the dancing. “Many who attended wanted to know when the next Hopper night was being held and were eager for a little more spice,” Ms May said. Personal Advocacy Service, an agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth, was established in 1989 in response to parents who were seeking ways to enrich the lives of their sons and daughters with intellectual disabilities. They wanted opportunities for their sons and daughters to be included in community life and valued for the contribution they could make to the local community. Nuturing the vineyard of our families EDITORIAL THIS WEEK commenced the opening of the Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which looks at the theme “The pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelisation.” The Synod on the Family will take place over the next two weeks and will end on October 19th with the beatification of its main promoter, Pope Paul VI. At a time when the concept of family is being greatly challenged, and even threatened, it is vital that we take note of the ‘catechesis’ that is being announced by the world, and seek the guidance that is being offered to us through the Synod. This catechesis of the world that is nothing short of

destructive and misinformed - often presents an unfortunately attractive and exciting view. However, it also provides a valuable lesson. As mentioned at the Synod this week, if the Church does not listen to the world, the world will not listen to the Church. Synod Assemblies, said Pope Francis, are not meant to discuss beautiful and clever ideas, or to see who is more intelligent. “They are meant to better nuture and tend the Lord’s vineyard, to help realise his dream, his loving plan for his people.” Many of us realise that family life – in its many shapes and sizes – can be difficult, making the catechesis of the world even more attractive as an easier alternative for those strug-

gling to follow a Christian way of life. As Christians we need to realise those challenges and remember that, as Pope Francis continued, the Lord is asking us persist in our care for the family, which has been from the beginning “an integral part of his loving plan for humanity.” Each one of us is called to live the Gospel in our daily lives – not as an explanation but as an action, so that we can be fruitful servants of the Good News of Christ. In closing, I bring to mind the words of Pope Francis who in his opening statement for the Synod, calls us to nuture the vineyard of the Lord with freedom, creativity, and hard work. “My brothers, to do a good job of nurturing and tending the vineyard, our hearts and our minds must

be kept in Jesus Christ, as Saint Paul says, by “the peace of God which passes all understanding.” For more information on the Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod, go to www.zenit. org. I also take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all our new readers, as well as a thankyou to all past readers. Don’t forget to send us your stories and photos to editor@therecord.com.au. Dr Jones says she is looking forward to building on what has gone before her at Maranatha by offering new courses and developing the ways in which courses are delivered. “There is much scope to develop our online pres-

ence, and to develop the opportunities for adult faith education for people in rural parts of the Archdiocese. “We would also like to make our courses more accessible to people in parishes throughout Perth,” she said. Dr Jones added that she is witnessing an increasing number of people who are hungry for faith enrichment and spiritual renewal, “We want to make what Maranatha has to offer as accessible as possible,”

she said. For Term Four, Maranatha has evening, twilight, weekend and daytime courses on offer ranging in length from three weeks to eight weeks. Course topics include Jesus and the Church, ecological conversion (just in time for the Pope’s new encyclical on this topic), Dorothy Day, the Infancy Narratives, Jewish festivals (with a Rabbi) and more. St Gerard’s new grotto a sign for all By Mark Reidy A NEW GROTTO at St Gerard Majella parish in Mirrabooka has already had a positive and unifying effect for both the parish and the wider community, according to Assistant Parish Priest Fr Antonio Scala. The new grotto, which replaced the original grotto built in 1986, was borne from a sketch produced by Fr Scala, inspired by grottos found in Italy. The concept of moving the original one from the side of the church to the front was enthusiastically embraced by parishioners who offered money to make the project possible, Fr Scala shared. “The new location near the entrance provides people with the opportunity to stop and pray as they enter the church and also as they leave, which was not possible before”, he said. Once Fr Scala had

completed his sketch, he approached builder Angelo Bongiascia from the Kelmscott parish and together they completed building the new structure within three weeks. The new structure and location not only provides easier access and a sacred place where families and individuals can come to pray, but also features

undercover benches which allows shelter and rest for those who gather, Fr Scala said. The statue of Our Lady of Lourdes from the original grotto has been transferred to the new site, but not before receiving restoration from a parishioner who also provided a new coat of paint to cover the damage caused by smog

and candle smoke over the past 28 years. The new grotto was officially opened on August 3 by Archbishop Emeritus Barry James Hickey, after the statue had been carried in a procession through the local streets while the Rosary was recited. Full Text available at

His solicitude, particularly for the most vulnerable and marginalised, invites all of us to care for the frailest and to recognise his suffering countenance, especially in the victims of new forms of poverty and slavery. The Lord says: ‘I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me’. The mission of the Church, herself a pilgrim in the world and the Mother of all, is thus to love Jesus Christ, to adore and love him, particularly in the poorest and most abandoned.” To read the full message, click here.
