Archbishop announces way forward ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe has last week officially announced his vision and priorities for the Archdiocese of Perth. The Archbishop made the announcement in front of a number of invited members of the Catholic community at St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday, 10 September 2015, inviting them to participate in a comprehensive consultation process over the coming months. More than 500 representatives from across the Archdiocese who were present for the historic announcement by the Archbishop, included members of the clergy and religious orders, parishioners, representatives from Catholic Education and tertiary institutions, welfare agencies and other organisations, in addition to committee members and staff. In his homily for the occasion, the Archbishop spoke about the great challenge facing the Archdiocese. “In my homily at my

installation Mass three and a half years ago, and so often since, I have insisted that the great challenge we face is ‘to return the Church in our Archdiocese to Christ, and return Christ to the Church’,” the Archbishop said. “As we prepare to enter into the Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis and, in the spirit of the Lord’s call

to repentance, it seems very clear to me that this is a time for us, as a local Church, to pause and consider where we have come from as a diocese, where we are at present, and where we must go in the future.” The Archbishop went on to announce seven key priority areas that have formed the basis for the review and consultation process, includ-

ing Professional Standards, Effective Communication, Outreach to those in need, Strengthening and Revitalising Parishes, Support for Clergy, Adult Faith Formation and Archdiocesan Growth and Development. Full Text available at

eRecord awarded Highly Commended at 2015 ACPA Awards THE ERECORD was last week awarded a Highly Commended at the 2015 Australasian Catholic Press Association (ACPA) Awards for the article titled Vincent aims for the heights to help homeless published on 10 April 2015. The article, written by Archdiocese of Perth Senior Communications Officer and eRecord Editor 1 | EDITION #49 | 18 SEPTEMBER 2015

Jamie O’Brien, looked at a simple plan to help the homeless of Perth that was successfully devised by 10-year-old Whitford Catholic Primary School student, Vincent Pettinchio. In announcing the judges’ comments for the category of Best Devotional Article Applying Faith to Life, outgoing ACPA President Annie Carrett,

Communications Manager from the Diocese of Broken Bay, said one wonders what this young boy might do when his Christian faith blossoms with age. Mr O’Brien, who attended the Conference and Awards Night which was held on 9 and 10 September at the Mangrove Hotel in Broome said, while he was most honoured to write the article,

it was even more inspiring to meet a young person like Vincent, who is obviously filled with a desire to carry out the work of Christ. The Conference and Awards Night was also the occasion of the 60th anniversary of ACPA and the first time the annual event was held at a regional area in Australia. Continued on Page 3

Dr Maria Harries appointed to the Synod on the Family ARCHBISHOP Costelloe has this week welcomed the appointment of Dr Maria Harries, a prominent West Australian, to the Synod on the Family to be held in Rome next month. The full list of participants was published by the Vatican on Tuesday evening (Perth time). Dr Harries is the inaugural Chair of MercyCare and was instrumental in the establishment of an organisation originally set up by the Christian Brothers to provide support for former child migrants and for other adults who had been in institutional care as children. In a statement released Wednesday morning, the Archbishop said Dr Harries’ professional career has focused on assisting children and families, particularly in relation to mental health and trauma associated with abuse and other forms of violence. Dr Harries has been particularly active in the field of child abuse and public policy. Dr Harries is a member of the Church’s Truth, Justice and Healing Council, the body established by the Australian

Dr Harries in an Adjunct Professor at Curtin University and a Senior Honorary Research Fellow in Social Work and Social Policy at the University of Western Australia. Dr Harries was also award-

ed an Order of Australia (AM) in 2004 for her contribution to the Australian community. “Dr Harries will bring, together with the richness of her own faith, a great deal of wisdom and experience to the work of the Synod,” the Archbishop said. “She is passionate about the welfare of children and the well-being and flourishing of families. Her contribution to the Synod will be invaluable.

“Together with Archbishop Coleridge and Bishop Hurley, who were elected by the bishops of Australia to represent the Catholic community in Australia, Dr Harries will help to bring our own Australian experience and perspective to this important event. “We congratulate Dr Harries on this significant appointment, we wish her well and we will, of course, accompany her with our prayers.”

Restoration of Pro Cathedral Nears Completion MAJOR RESTORATION works on the historic St John’s Catholic Pro Cathedral are nearing completion. The restoration works, which commenced in 2012, have been generously funded, in part with a grant received from Lotterywest, and included attending to the increasing problem with rising dampness, causing the walls to crumble, restoring the windows to their original condition, internal and exter2 | EDITION #49 | 18 SEPTEMBER 2015

nal painting and relacing roof timbers. Although slightly behind schedule, Stage Two works are now nearing completion and include the installation of a new floor, with improved ventilation under the floor space to permanently resolve the extensive damage caused by rotting timbers. In a statement released last week, the comprehensive list of works aim to return the iconic Church building back

to a condition where it will once again serve the community. The restoration works have been overseen by Christopher Patterson from Palassis Architects, while local builder Colgan Industries was selected to undertake both Stage One and Stage Two works as an experienced heritage builder. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe said he is delighted that this important and

unique building, the first Catholic church in Western Australia, will soon re-emerge - a much loved icon of our city, ready to again serve as a ‘working church’ for the people of Perth. “It is hoped that all works will be completed by October 2015, just in time for the proposed Heritage Tours to commence,” the Archbishop said. Notre Dame Parish celebrates 55 years By Marco Ceccarelli NOTRE DAME Parish Cloverdale could not have celebrated its 55th anniversary and the Nativity of Our Lady in a better way than with a visit from Archbishop Timothy Costelloe on 8 September 2015. Within the walls of a parish named after the Virgin Mary, the Archbishop celebrated Mass for more than 400 parishioners, taking time to greet many of them in the celebrations that followed. In his homily for the occasion, Archbishop Costelloe recalled a number of statements made by the bishops summoned for the Second Vatican Council – an event which began two years after the 1960 inauguration of the parish in Cloverdale. “The Church, the bishops said, is a sign and instrument of two things: communion with God and unity among all God’s people. And so, tonight, above all else, we should thank God for all the ways in which, over the 55 years of the life of this parish, people have been helped to find their way to God and have found themselves drawn into a community of faith.” The Archbishop went on

to quote Pope St John Paul II, who saw the Church as “the community of the disciples of Christ” and laid emphasis on the importance of unity among parishioners. “Firstly, we are a community. This means that, rather than being a group of isolated and independent individuals, we are called to really be brothers and sisters to each other. In this sense, perhaps another word for ‘community’ might be family. But we are a particular community – a community of

disciples. “Disciples are people who follow and learn from another, people who know that their gaze must not be fixed on themselves but on their leader. As Christians, our leader is Christ. Tonight, then, as a parish community, you are invited to consider if Christ really is, not just in theory but also in practice, the source of your inspiration, of your strength and of your hope,” the Archbishop said. Parish priest of Notre Dame, Father Nelson Po, stated that

the Archbishop’s visit had an extremely positive impact on the congregation and breathed new life into that principle of community on which the parish stands. “We were impressed by how the Archbishop encouraged us to reflect on the way we live as a parish community and how merciful we are to those who are on the outskirts of the parish. eRecord awarded Highly Commended at 2015 ACPA Awards Continued from Page 1 In giving the keynote address at the Conference, Bishop of the Diocese of Broome, Christopher Saunders, spoke about his role as the former Chair of the Australian Catholic Social Council for the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). Bishop Saunders was also speaking in context of the

release of the 2015 Social Justice Statement which was released on Wednesday, 10 September. “The great gift of Francis, our Holy Father… is to awaken us from our slumber, to help us see in the plaintive look of the hungry child, the traumatised refugee, the desperately dispossessed and the marginalised poor, nothing less than the face of the

suffering Christ who begs of us compassion and Christian action for justice,” Bishop Saunders said. Bishop Saunders went on to speak about the history of the Aboriginal community in the Diocese of Broome and the role of social justice. “I believe without hesitation that the Church in Australia is called to be bold

in its part in the service of Australian society - even though we so often appear these days to be on the back foot. “We share a unique moment in the pages of our country’s history and we are being well prepared as we learn humility which we know is the foundation of all Christian endeavour.” EDITION #49 | 18 SEPTEMBER 2015|

Asylum seekers’ plight in focus at insightful breakfast By Marco Ceccarelli IT IS DIFFICULT to hear the personal account of Mr Ashraff Mohammad, a former refugee from Afghanistan who belongs to the Hazara ethnic minority, without being shaken to the core and feeling like more needs to be done for those seeking asylum in Australia. Mr Mohammad recently told his story at the Conversations About People Seeking Asylum in Australia breakfast, held on Tuesday, 15 September at the UWA University Club, Crawley. Sponsored by MercyCare, the Association for Services to Torture and Trauma Survivors (ASeTTS), The Red Cross, the Centre for Human Rights Education, Curtin University, Murdoch University, The Humanitarian Group and the Coalition of Asylum Seekers Refugees and Detainees (CARAD), the event aimed to raise awareness surrounding the plight of people seeking asylum in Australia who have arrived by boat. “Hazaras are one of the religious and ethnic minorities that have lived in Afghanistan for over 4,000 years. Throughout history, they’ve been subject to mass killings, torture and discrimination,” began Mr Mohammad, immediately silencing the attendance of some 80 people. “Often, their lands have been taken from them. In the 1880s, 63 per cent of my people were massacred. Out of one million, 630,000 were killed; the remainder fled or sought shelter in the mountainous part of Afghanistan. “The only reason why

Ashraff Mohammad has experienced first-hand what it means to be the member of a persecuted minority. He recently shared his story at Conversations About People Seeking Asylum in Australia breakfast, held on Tuesday, 15 September at the UWA University Club, Crawley. PHOTO: M CECCARELLI

some survived is that the mountainous region is very isolated, remote and difficult to get into,” he added. When the Taliban came to power throughout the latter part of the 1990s and Hazaras were given the option

atic killing of Hazaras began in Quetta and he lost relatives, including his seven-year-old niece, he made arrangements to flee to Australia. “I went through Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia to catch a boat to Australia. Each

I only find peace in thinking that my sacrifices may ensure that my children will have the right to live like everyone else of converting to the Sunni denomination of Islam (the majority of Hazaras are Shiite Muslims), leave the country, or be killed, Mr Mohammad fled to Pakistan with his family. At the age of seven, he found himself in Quetta, a city in Pakistan, selling plastic bags to help his family financially. When, in 2001, a system-

time a wave hit us, we would close our eyes and think ‘this is the end’ as many of us could not swim. This went on for almost seven days until the Australian Navy rescued us.” Mr Mohammad’s distress at having left his wife and two children behind due to financial reasons was only matched by the 18 months he spent inside the Curtin Detention

Centre in the Kimberley region. He described his time within the centre as a ‘psychological shock’ experienced by many who flee war-torn countries only to be faced with the misery and isolation of detention centres. As he lives under refugee status and awaits his citizenship, Mr Mohammad is worried he is giving his family back home false expectations of reaching Australia. “After 20 years, I still feel like I do not have the right to live like everyone else. I only find peace in thinking that my sacrifices and my journey may ensure that my children will have the basic right to live like everyone else,” he concluded. Full Text available at
