Deacons-elect prepare to serve By Marco Ceccarelli THE ARCHDIO CESE of Perth is anticipating a momentous occasion this week as six seminarians from St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford, will be ordained to the diaconate by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe on Friday, 7 November, at St Mary’s Cathedral. The deacon-elects, Simeon San, Garner Vergara Jr., Stephen Gorddard, Jeffey Casabuena, Israel Quirit and Grant Gorddard have all studied at St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford, and Notre Dame University, Fremantle, and are originally from Australia, the Philippines and Myanmar (Burma). In an interview with Communications and Media Office journalist Marco Ceccarelli, the six deaconelects spoke about a strong desire to serve the Christian community that God will entrust them with. Their experiences, they said, conveyed a distinct sense of faithfulness and commitment to their ministry as they framed their transition into the diaconate as a sign of their devotion to the Church, the people of God and, more importantly, to Jesus Christ. The intimacy with Christ, many of them said, had sustained their openness to their vocation and had steadily accompanied them EDITION #6 | 6 NOVEMBER 2014

on their journey towards priesthood. The term “deacon” has its etymological roots in the Greek word diákonos, meaning “servant,” “minister,” or “messenger.” The Catechism of the

configures them to Christ, who made himself the ‘deacon’ or servant of all.” (Article 1570) In light of these words, the testimonies of the young men reflect a profound understanding of the mis-

The desire to serve people attracted me to the priesthood. Selflessness and altruistic love was my inspiration. Catholic Church states that “deacons share in Christ’s mission and grace in a special way. The sacrament of Holy Orders marks them with an imprint (‘character’) which cannot be removed which

sion that awaits them. Garner Vergara Jr., originally from Cebu in the Philippines, studied nursing at a Catholic University run by Augustinians before arriving in Perth in 2008. He joined St Charles’

seminary in 2009. Garner experienced the rewards of being at the service of others in his home country where he volunteered for an organisation that feeds and teaches homeless children in the slums of Cebu. As he entered adult life, his altruistic inclinations gradually grew and, despite the opportunities to study at different universities, he remained committed to becoming a missionary and a priest. “I think it was the desire to serve people that attracted me to the priesthood. Selflessness and altruistic love was my inspiration” he said. Continued on Page 3

Talents Shine in Tournament of Minds By Marco Ceccarelli OUR LADY of Grace School in North Beach has again outperformed and outsmarted its competitors in this year’s Tournament of Minds, a problem-solving competition for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. This year, a team of seven students from the school became State Champions in the maths engineering primary division. This gave them the opportunity to represent Western Australia at the Australasian Pacific Final in Melbourne on 18 October 2014, where they were decorated with an Honours title that continued the school’s history of success in this competition. The Tournament of Minds competition begins at regional level, with students from four regions of Western Australia competing for a spot in the state final. Those who succeed at state level proceed to the national finals.

This year, Our Lady of Grace entered four teams in the Tournament of Minds competition, one for each of the following divisions: applied technology, language literature, social sciences and maths engineering. The most successful of these, the maths engi-

neering team, was made up of Years 5 and 6 students, all of whom were selected for the competition after preliminary auditioning of their creativity skills, learning strategies and ability to work as a team. The competition challenges students with prob-

lem-solving tasks and asks them to think for themselves; improvisation and spontaneity are indicators of creativity and can gain significant points from the judges. Full Text available at

St Marys Carnarvon gets immersed in work for the poor AFTER A YEAR of preparation, seven students and five adults from St Marys Star of the Sea Catholic S cho ol, C ar n ar von , embarked on a journey earlier this year that would open their eyes and hearts. The destination was Cambodia, specifically the nation’s capital, Phnom Penh, and the tourism city of Siem Reap. In Phnom Penh, with its frenetic, seemingly chaotic traffic, the travellers were exposed to the recent hisEDITION #6 | 6 NOVEMBER 2014

tory of the region, focusing on what the Khmer people refer to as The Terrible Times, the era of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. This involved a full day spent at S-21 (the Genocide Museum) and one of the Killing Fields (ChoeungEk). After a brief stay in this vibrant city, the group embarked upon an arduous and uncomfortable eight hour road trip along flood damaged roads to Siem Reap. It was in this region that their real work began.

Over the course of the year leading up to departing from Cambodia, the travellers organised a series of events to raise funds that were then used for projects on arrival in Cambodia. A total of more than $7000 was raised which included individual donations. These funds were put to good work supporting a number of projects and organisations, including the construction of five wells in the rural areas around Siem Reap, financial support for

Home of Joy, a refuge for displaced children run by the Missionary Sisters of Charity, financial support for two years for a Khmer teacher at Smiling Hearts Association Cambodia (SHAC), supporting the work of Mr Aki Ra through the Landmine Museum and school removing live ammunition that still litters the Cambodian countryside. Deacons-elect prepare to serve ahead of Ordination (con’t) Continued from Page 1 WHEN asked about his hopes for the future of his vocation Garner said that he endeavours to use the gifts that God has given him. “To be an example of a good Christian disciple, to be of service to the People of God for the greater glory of his name.” Equally inspiring testimonies were given by 34-year-old Jeffey Casabuena and 26-year-old Israel Quirit, also from the Philippines. Jeffey initially entered the Sacred Heart Seminary, Bacolod City, where he finished his a Philosophy Degree.

He describes his experience of discovering his vocation to the priesthood as a “beautiful tapestry” woven by God from a “jumble of threads,” a reference to the different events of his religious life that pointed him towards the seminary. The abundance of gifts from God that Jeffey received created a strong desire within his heart to give back to God by serving his people. “I received lots of beautiful gifts from the Lord that I do not deserve, and in turn, I offer myself to him as a gift to others,” he said. Israel, on the other hand, grew up in Dipolog

city where he studied electrical engineering until he decided to choose the path of religious life in 2005. While he entered the seminary in 2009, his true calling to become a diocesan priest did not blossom until 2012. It was in this time that, he says, he began to fall in love with the priesthood, “that is, ‘falling in love’ to a way of life, to way of being, that constitutes the priesthood.” Israel felt that being chosen to be servant of God among millions of people in the Philippines was somewhat frightening – a fear that slowly faded as he entered a gradual process of

discernment and formation in the seminary. Jeffey’s and Israel’s desire to be instruments in the hands of God for the service of others reflects the vision of another deacon-elect, 28-year-old Simeon San. Simeon grew up in the village of Pan Hlaing, Myanmar (Burma), where he was raised by parents strong in the Catholic faith. Simeon was inspired by different role models during his youth, including his parish priest and numerous seminarians. Full Text available at

Organ transplant at St Anne’s a success By Mark Reidy

A CONCERT commemorating the installation of one of Western Australia’s most historical organs took place at St Anne’s Church in Belmont on 5 October. The instrument, built by the Swan River Colony’s first organ builder, Robert Cecil Clifton (1854-1931), was played by Dr Andrew Cichy before a capacity audience, including ten of Clifton’s descendants. Dr Cichy, who was a consultant on the purchase and installation of the Clifton organ, had been invited to perform the inaugural recital and was extremely pleased with the result. “I am very happy to see such an interest in Catholic communities, especially from young people and the clergy, in promoting the use of the pipe organ as a liturgical instrument,” he said. “The interest and enthu-

siasm that I experienced for organ music… indicate to me that the future of sacred music in Perth is bright.” The organ, which was refurbished and installed in St Anne’s in September this year, is the largest and most intact of the six Clifton-built organs surviving. It is also

the one most closely associated with Robert Clifton as he spent a decade building it for his house in Adelaide Terrace over a century ago. The afternoon’s program consisted of 18th-century works by composers from Italy, Spain, England and North and South Germany,

including Bohm, Pachelbel, Bach, Buxtehude, Couperin and Zipoli, and showcased the versatility and wide range of styles the Clifton organ is capable of playing. Full Text available at

CYM young adults retreat focuses on prayer A RETREAT organised by Catholic Youth Ministry that focused on learning to pray and developing a better prayer life, proved successful for some 40 young adults. Held at Eagles Nest in Gidgegannup from October 10 to 12, the retreat gave participants from various parishes and communities the opportunity to take time out to relax, pray, and grow closer to God. The theme for the retreat, titled “To the Heights” was inspired by the words of Blessed Pier Georgio Frassati, a patron saint for Catholic Youth Ministry. Catholic Youth Ministry Worker, Eliza McKay explained that “To the heights” means to look towards heaven, while growing in holiness within the circumstances of life in which each person finds themselves. “Through developing a strong and constant prayer life we allow ourselves, by the process of theosis, to be transformed into the image and likeness of God,” Miss McKay said. University of Notre Dame student, Christen Sheffer, said it helped her realise how important prayer is. “It gave me a new way to pray through contemplation,” Christen said. “Also talking to people and seeing how they live their faith was great and to be able to relate to others who are growing in their faith.” The highlight for many was the combination of informative and practical talks, as well as a significant period of time in silence.

The time in silence also gave participants the opportunity to spend time in adoration, practice the practical tips they had learnt, reconnecting and growing closer to God, plus prepare for reconciliation. Miss McKay also explained that the period of silence culminated in a walk to a nearby lookout, where participants were reminded that it is to heaven that we are all called. “Following the walk, participants also had the chance to relax and socialise over wine, cheese and acoustic music.” “The retreat really was a perfect opportunity to take some time out, while also spend time in prayer growing closer to God, getting to know other young Catholics and becoming better equipped to go back to our everyday lives,” Miss McKay said.
