ARCHBISHOP COSTELLOE OPENS

SCHOOLS EXIST to prepare young people for their future and to equip them with the tools they will need to make their lives rich and fulfilling, Archbishop Costelloe told the Emmanuel College Community recently, as part of the blessing and opening of the new Sports and Performing Arts Centre of Excellence. The school community came together on Wednesday, 6 April for the occasion, which included some 250 students, teachers, parents, friends and board members. Catholic Education Executive Director Dr Tim McDonald was also present for the occasion to officially open the new facility. “The Church is convinced that the most important tool, and one which influences every other dimension of a person’s life, is a recognition of the love and presence of God at work in every human heart and in the world around us,” the Archbishop continued. As part of the blessing and opening ceremony, the Archbishop blessed crosses in each room of the new facility and College Captains, Atidaishe Mugwara and Antonio Joboy assisted with the unveiling of the new plaque. said the new facility has provided students with an outstanding resource for Sport and Performing Arts educational programs. “It has certainly raised the profile of both these teaching areas and staff and students are delighted with the opportunities that our new facility provides,” Mr Di Gregorio said. “Added to this, the centre has provided the college with a whole school meeting place to hold assemblies, liturgies, Masses and other events. We now have a comfortable venue conducive to best practice for these school events,” he said. Mr Di Gregorio went on to explain that the original school master plan included a building to facilitate both
the sport and performing arts programs of the college. The actual build, which had been talked about for many years, finally came together in late 2012, under the principalship of Mr John Bormolini, who together with the College Board invited EIW Architects, to commence the planning and design process. “After two years of researching and careful designing of the new facility, the building program commenced in 2015 and was ready for student and staff use from the beginning of 2016,” Mr Di Gregorio said. In continuing his address for the occasion, the Archbishop continued by saying that because God is at the heart of everything, and not just a kind of added-on optional
extra, then everything good in life both comes from God and can open our eyes to the beauty and goodness of God. “This is certainly true of what we sometimes think of as extra curricular activities like sport, drama and the arts,” the Archbishop said. “These things, each in their own way, and in a way that is different from the more traditional academic pursuits, put us in touch with the depths of our own humanity and help us to give space to all the gifts which God has given us,” he said. EASTER IN JERUSALEM - PART ONE: PERTH PILGRIMS OFFER INSIGHT INTO HOLY LAND WHEN BATEMAN PARISHIONER Angela McCarthy travelled to Jerusalem to study Matthew’s Gospel last year, she had no idea she would be invited to return less than 12 months later as a music director. Describing the offer as one she “simply could not refuse”, Dr McCarthy has shared her incredible experiences of Easter in the Holy Land in a two-part feature for The eRecord. Dr McCarthy was invited back to Jerusalem to direct the music for this year’s Easter Triduum at the Ecce Homo convent, home to the Centre for Biblical Formation. Run by Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion, the convent is located in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City on the Via Dolorosa – the traditionally honoured route that Jesus took while carrying the cross. Dr McCarthy made the trip to Jerusalem with fellow Bateman parishioner, Brendan D’Sa, after recognising that the job was too big for one person. “Providing the music for the Triduum

is a complex task, even after having directed it for many years in my own parish of St Thomas More Bateman, particularly when the desire is for full participation by an unknown group assembled from countries all over the world,” she said. “I therefore invited one of our excellent musicians, Brendan D’Sa, to join me. He is both a cantor and keyboardist and his
youthful energy and intelligent liturgical musicianship formed the partnership needed for the task.” Alongside their musical roles, Dr McCarthy and Mr D’Sa were lucky enough to participate in the Passover and Easter course at the Centre for Biblical Formation while they were in Jerusalem. The course examined the Book of Exodus and John’s Gospel under the

guidance of biblical scholars, Father Walter Vogels and Sister Joan Campbell. It also included lectures from Jewish and Muslim academics, visits to a synagogue and Hebrew-speaking Catholic community and walking tours through Jerusalem. Dr McCarthy, who is a Senior Lecturer in Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia, said examining the city’s ancient heritage, particularly the Temple Mount, was “completely fascinating”. The Romans destroyed the famous temple in 70AD but parts of the platform have been excavated, including the origi-
nal steps to the Pilgrims’ Gate, through which Jesus and His disciples would have entered. “This highly contested space is sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” Dr McCarthy said. “When we visited it, I was taken once again by its intense sense of the sacred. Jesus taught in this space and, over near the Eastern Gate (where the Messiah is supposed to enter), there is a beautiful olive grove and I couldn’t help but feel that this was the kind of space where Jesus taught.” The group also visited Bethlehem,
including the Church of the Nativity, originally commissioned by Constantine the Great and his mother, St Helena, in 326AD, and Bethlehem University. Run by the De La Salle Brothers, with New Zealand Brother Peter Bray as Vice Chancellor, the university left a strong impression on Dr McCarthy. VISITS ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL FORMER PRESIDENT of East Timor, His Excellency Xanana Gusmão, last weekend, on Sunday, 24 April, visited St Mary’s Cathedral, much to the delight of Cathedral Dean Monsignor Michael Keating and those who attended the morning Mass. After being welcomed and greeted by Mgr Keating just outside the Cathedral’s Holy Door, HE Gusmão was welcomed in and stayed for the 11am Mass. HE Gusmão was visiting Perth as part of the 2016 ANZAC Day celebrations. Manatuto, in what was then Portuguese Timor, and attended a Jesuit high school just outside the city of Dili and reportedly studied to become a Jesuit priest later in life. HE Gusmão is famed for having led East Timor to independence from Indonesia in 2002, in addition to having played a leading role in its political life ever since. Following his service as President of East Timor, HE Gusmão became the fourth Prime Minister of East Timor, serving from 8 August 2007 to 16 February 2015. NATIONAL NURSING APPOINTEE TO FOSTER CULTURE
OF ENQUIRY AT ST JOHN OF GOD HEALTH CARE
St John of God Health Care (SJOGHC) has recently appointed a director to guide the development of its nursing workforce across 23 facilities in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. Cynthia Dowell was announced in early April as the new Group Director Nursing - a position that involves overseeing training and professional development for nursing staff across these facilities, including 17 hospitals, as well as disability services and home nursing. Originally trained in Victoria, Ms Dowell’s most recent role was as Chief Nursing Officer and Executive Director Surgery and Specialist Services at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, where she was responsible for more than 2,000 nurses. As one of Australia’s biggest nongovernment hospital operators – and its biggest Catholic hospital operator – SJOGHC employs more than 13,500 care givers in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific.

It has long reinforced the importance of supporting its nursing workforce, with 44 per cent of employees providing direct nursing care to 290,000 patients and clients every year. As Group Director Nursing, Ms Dowell will be responsible for develop-
ing this workforce with an emphasis on evidence-based decision making and a culture of enquiry, using research, training and professional development to do so. She will also head up the Nursing Leadership Group which brings together senior Directors of Nursing at the group’s largest and specialist hospitals. Supporting her in the Group Director Nursing role will be SJGHC’s partnership with a range of training organisations, including 26 universities, which train students of nursing, medical and other healthcare subjects. Ms Dowell’s own qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and a Professional Cer t ific ate in He alt h System s Management. BIG DECISION TO BECOME CATHOLIC
MADE EASY AT BALLAJURA By Rachel Curry
A FRIENDLY yet thorough Christian initiation process helped Ballajura parishioners Bruce Ramsay and Amanda Dillon make the life-altering decision to become Catholic. The pair sung the praises of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), after receiving the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation at Mary MacKillop Catholic Church Ballajura Parish during the Easter Vigil. The RCIA guides participants through a period of learning and discussion about the Catholic faith, before they make the final decision to . Pa r t icipa nt s i nclude Catechumens, who have not been baptised, and Candidates, who have been baptised in another Christian denomination. Mr Ramsay, who was raised as Anglican, recalled that he was very religious when he was young. “I was what we used to call ‘servers’ in Church, assisting the priest with communion, so I was quite invested in it, in my young life and teens,” he said. “Then in my 20’s, I lost faith in everything and turned away from the whole thing.” The turning point for Mr Ramsay came when he met his partner, Esme Barker, who is
Catholic, about 15 years ago. He used to walk her to and from Mass every Sunday, but never attended, until a health scare shook his world view. “After I retired from work, I got quite ill six months later and had to have a large operation,” he said. “You start to think about things and I thought, ‘There’s got me be more to life than just drifting through and dying.’” Mr Ramsay began to attend Mass with Ms Barker and said he found a new “spiritual purpose”. His interest in the RCIA came some years later, after he felt a desire to take communion, as he had done so in the Anglican Church. He said he wasn’t sure about becoming Catholic at first, but came to a decision gradually, with the help of Ballajura Assistant Priest Father Stephen Gorddard. “Fr Stephen made a very great impact on me…I felt he was someone I could relate to, even though he’s a lot younger than I am,” he added with a laugh. Now a full member of the Catholic Church, Mr Ramsay said he finally felt fulfilled. “I’ve come back with an even stronger faith, coming from a different perspective,” he said. “I feel it’s far more personal

than it ever was and I’m very appreciative of the Church accepting someone like me.” Unlike Mr Ramsay, Mrs Dillon did not have a religious upbringing, despite being baptised as a child. Instead, she came to the Church through her husband, who is Catholic, and through professional influences. “In the last few years I worked at a Catholic school and that opened my eyes and made me want to learn a bit more,” she explained. Her children attending a Catholic school was another factor which piqued her interest in the faith, leading her to join the RICA. She said she enjoyed the process, which helped her resolve difficult questions such as ‘Why does God let bad things happen?’
“I didn’t know what to expect, but Fr Stephen was really lovely and it was really informal,” she said. “The information he gave us was very thorough. We all went around asking questions, which he was happy to answer and he made it really easy to understand.” After going through the RCIA, Mrs Dillon described receiving the sacraments at the Easter Vigil as a beautiful experience. “I don’t think I realised how big of a deal it is and how special it is to be welcomed into the Church,” she said.
