Perth clergy unite to celebrate Ministry MORE THAN 175 priests, deacons and seminarians from across the Archdiocese last month gathered at Aquinas College for the annual Clergy Mass and Dinner. The clergy were joined by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton for the occasion, together with Bishop Justin Bianchini from the Diocese of Geraldton and Bishop Christopher Saunders, from the Diocese of Broome. Archbishop Emeritus Hickey, who was attending the World Meeting of 1 | EDITION #51 | 2 OCTOBER 2015

Families in Philadelphia, and Bishop Gerard Holohan, from the Diocese of Bunbury, were unable to attend. The annual event gives the clergy an opportunity celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for the gift of their vocation and to recommit themselves to the Lord and to his Church. Speaking to the eRecord after the event, Archbishop Costelloe said the occasion was also an opportunity to acknowledge those who were celebrating special anniversaries. “We also acknowledged our newly ordained priests

and deacons.” Although the celebration is no longer held at St Charles’s Seminary, due to the large numbers involved, seminarians from the two seminaries are still heavily involved in the preparation and celebration of the Liturgy. The Chapel at Aquinas College provided a perfect setting for a dignified, reverent and joyfilled Eucharistic celebration, greatly enriched by the music provided by Jacinta Jakovcevic, the Director of Music at the Cathedral, and the seminarians from St Charles. Thanks were paid to

Executive Assistant to the Archbishop, Jennifer Lazberger, who worked hard to coordinate the event, in addition to the Principal, teachers and catering staff at Aquinas College, who prepared the venue. “Our priests, ably assisted in many cases by our permanent deacons, are at the heart of the life of our parishes and of our diocese,” the Archbishop said. “They are, for us, a living sign that Jesus continues to be among his people as their Good Shepherd. MercyCare launches new fund, bombing survivor speaks By Marco Ceccarelli LONDON bombings survivor Gill Hicks’ remarkable story of resilience was the focus of the 2015 MercyCare Oration held on Thursday, 24 September at the Hyatt Regency’s grand ballroom. The oration also coincided with the launch of a special new fund, titled MercyCare’s First Time Ever Fund, to support children who are cared for through MercyCare’s Fostering Services and Family Group Homes. In the presence of more than 500 attendees, among whom were Auxiliary Bishop of Perth Donald Sproxton; Minister for Local Government, the Hon Tony Simpson MLA; and Governor of Western Australia, the Hon Kerry Sanderson AO, Ms Hicks shared her remarkable story of survival in the face of tragedy. Standing only feet away from the suicide bomber on the Kings Cross train on that fateful 7 July 2005, Ms Hicks was the last person to be rescued from the wreckage. Her ability to tourniquet her leg wounds and the persistence of the medical team that found her, significantly contributed to her survival. She suffered severe and permanent injuries, losing both her legs from below the knee. Drawing on remarkable resilience and determination to triumph against all odds, Ms Hicks has devoted the last ten years to passionately advocating for peace. In her speech, Ms Hicks focused on three fundamental values that contributed to her amazing recovery: courage, compassion and respect. She drew a parallel between her experience and the vision that drives agencies such as 2 | EDITION #51 | 2 OCTOBER 2015

MercyCare, emphasising the value of MercyCare’s work in aged care, family, health and community services. “Wonderfully, there are so many values that we share,” Ms Hicks said. “In preparing this oration, I was filled with a spectrum

Ms Hicks went on to share a number of insights on the importance of the kind, courageous, and loving people she was surrounded by throughout her journey from near-death experience to public advocate for initiatives of coexistence.

“Many are familiar with Ms Hicks’ story. Her triumph is a true embodiment of many of the guiding values of respect, courage, compassion and integrity” of emotions, mostly the areas where so many have made such a difference to my quality of life. This care, this dedication to the rebuilding and repositioning of me into a place of strength and independence resonated so brilliantly with the work done through MercyCare services.”

MercyCare Chief Executive Officer Chris Hall said MercyCare was delighted to welcome Ms Hicks to share her inspirational story at the 2015 Oration. “Many Australians are familiar with Ms Hicks’ story. Her triumph in the face of such tragedy is a true embodiment of many of the

guiding values of respect, courage, compassion, integrity and justice which underpin MercyCare’s vision for people and communities to thrive,” Mr Hall said. In reference to the launch of MercyCare’s First Time Ever Fund at the Oration, Mr Hall said the fund helps support MercyCare’s vision to break cycles of disadvantage, enabling children in the organisation’s care to thrive. “MercyCare’s Foster Care program and Family Group Homes provide children with the opportunity to experience a lot of ‘firsts’. For some children, this might be the first time they feel protected, the first time that they can safely explore who they are and who they want to be.” Full Text available at

Mr Hargraves, pictured tuning one of the pipe organs he restored for the 2009 grand re-opening of St Mary’s Cathedral, was recently in Perth to deliver two illustrated talks on the art of organ building and restoration. PHOTO: MARCO CECCARELLI

Organ builder revisits fruits of his labour By Marco Ceccarelli MEMORIES of the 2009 grand re-opening of St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth recently resurfaced among enthusiasts of Cathedral music as two pipe organs were visited by their restorer, John Hargraves. Director of the renowned South Island Organ Company (SIOC) in New Zealand, Mr Hargraves visited the Cathedral on Saturday, 19 September 2015 to present two illustrated talks entitled Rebuilding St Mary’s Cathedral pipe-organs in honour of Mr Dodd and Mr Hobday and My life as an organ builder. Mr Hargraves also had an opportunity to assess and tune the two pipe organs within the Cathedral while recalling the time during which he was in charge of their restoration. “The project of restoring and rebuilding the two organs for St Mary’s Cathedral in

Perth germinated in 2005 when we were invited to submit a proposal based on the success of our instruments at St Patrick’s Basilica, Fremantle,” Mr Hargraves said. “Once the contract was signed, the Cathedral organ was dismantled and brought to our workshop in New Zealand, where it sat for nearly two years while the new Cathedral plans were finalised. St Mary’s organ project took over 20,000 hours of labour to complete and was a large, complex and intensely satisfying undertaking from many points of view - musical, architectural, liturgical, design, heritage and craftsmanship,” he added. Reflecting on a high point of his experience restoring the two organs, Mr Hargraves spoke of the intense work that went into having the instruments ready for the re-opening of the Cathedral in 2009.

To this day, he says he looks on that period with fondness and is proud to see “these wonderful organs” still working magnificently. “Designing and having the organs completed in time for the re-opening of the Cathedral was truly a highlight for me. Their installation took three months from 14 September: this was quite challenging as we were doing a massive and intricate work alongside the construction workers right up to the last day. “I was so happy to attend all the special services and events of the re-opening with one of the two WA organ builders, Colin van der Lecq, who assisted our company with the work,” he said. St Mary’s Cathedral is not the only landmark building in Perth that has seen Mr Hargraves’ company carry out professional works of restoration in the new mil-

lennium. The majestic organs of The University of Western Australia’s Winthrop Hall and St George’s Cathedral also underwent work by SIOC in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In 2010, Mr Hargraves was named a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to organ restoration. Established in Timaru, New Zealand in 1968, SIOC’s restoration philosophy is based on conserving the original fabric and musical character of the instrument as far as possible and reconstructing missing, worn-out or modified parts in facsimile style and materials, wherever practicable. In most cases, SIOC aims to restore the organ as a working instrument. Full Text available at

Cultural ties deliver enriching educational experiences TEN PRE-SERVICE teachers from The University of Notre Dame Australia have gained a new perspective on their future professions after a trip to one of Australia’s most remote Aboriginal communities. Students and staff from Notre Dame’s School of Education, Fremant le recently spent a week at the Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School in Western Australia as part of a service-learning immersion program which has grown over the past three years. This immersion program is an additional experience over and above the formal 32 weeks of practicum that all Notre Dame Education students are required to undertake as part of their degree. Tjuntjuntjara is located in the Great Victorian Desert roughly 1,400km east of Perth. Students and staff need to take a train to Kalgoorlie and then a 600km fourwheel drive trek towards the Northern Territory border to reach the Aboriginal community of 160 people. Whilst in the community, students and staff did everything from installing a new playground, including soft fall sand, painting classroom doors, and cleaning out the sports and garden sheds to assisting with IT issues and sorting library books. Daniel Havelberg, Principal of Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School, said the visiting students gained a valuable insight into understanding and being aware of the cultural, physical, professional and personal rewards and challenges that come with
