Archbishop blesses new Trade Centre at La Salle College LA SALLE COLLEGE stands on the fundamental conviction that at the heart of every human life we find the mystery of God, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe said last week at the recent blessing and opening of the new Brother Fitzhardinge Trade Skills Centre for La Salle College in Middle Swan. “It is this conviction which explains the existence of Catholic schools in the wider educational landscape in Australia,” the Archbishop said. Archbishop Costelloe blessed crucifixes to hang in the Trade Skills Centre, which offers Vocational Education and Training courses in areas including Engineering and Furniture Making.

The Archbishop was joined for the occasion by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull who officially opened the new facilities, together with Catholic Education Western Australia Executive Director, Dr Tim McDonald; Assistant Minister of Health and Aged Care, Ken Wyatt; Senator Linda Reynolds; and Executive Director of the National Catholic Education Commission, Ross Fox. Also in attendance for the occasion was Brother Berkeley Fitzhardinge, a former principal of the College after whom the Trade Skills Centre was named, in recognition of his early introduction of technology and enterprise studies in the College’s curriculum. College Principal Wayne Bull led the official party on a tour of the new facilities

while students talked with Prime Minister Turnbull as they demonstrated some of the work stations, before presenting him with a painting completed by a number of the College’s Aboriginal students. The new Trade Skills Centre is equipped to enable studies in a range of VET areas, including metal work and material designs, as well as furniture construction, and has already been used by students from Trinity College, Chisholm Catholic College and St Joseph’s School in Northam, as well as those at La Salle College. Continuing his speech for the occasion, Archbishop Costelloe went on to say that he is very grateful to live in a country where Catholic Education is free to work in partnership with society and

governments to provide an education that respects the contribution made, based as it is on the values which come to us from our Christian faith. “Schools exist to prepare and equip young people for their future, and the Church is convinced that the most important tool, and one which influences every other dimension of a person’s life, is a recognition of the love and presence of God at work in every human heart,” the Archbishop said. “Schools don’t just prepare future plumbers, or IT specialists, or nurses, or even politicians or clergy for their jobs – schools prepare people for life. BJ HICKEY SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

TO STUDY ACROSS THE GLOBE By Rachel Curry

THREE PERTH WOMEN undertaking studies in the United States, the Middle East and Australia have been awarded scholarships from the BJ Hickey Biblical Foundation. Now in its third year, the Foundation awards scholarships to lay people, as well as Religious Sisters and Brothers, who wish to pursue biblical studies of any length and at any level, locally or overseas.

Applicants must outline the extent to which their studies focus on the Bible and how they will use their new knowledge to contribute to the Archdiocese of Perth. The three scholarship winners, Gem Oliveiro, Laura Firth and Helen Vester, are not only spanning the globe in their studies, but are also covering a number of different interest areas. Mrs Oliveiro wants to use her passion for painting, photography and poetry to help people experience the Word of God

on a richer level. The scholarship will help her travel to Jerusalem to participate in the course ‘In the Footsteps of Jesus’ at the Centre for Biblical Formation. In addition to formal learning, she said she would expand her knowledge through field trips to holy sites and the experience of living in Jerusalem for four weeks. “This will nourish my artistic exploration of Lectio Divina (Holy Reading): I intend to paint, take photographs and

write about my experiences,” she said. “I am keen to offer an artist’s insight into Lectio Divina, through the use of visual art, photography and poetry as contemplative tools when reading and reflecting on the Word.” Mrs Firth is also completing studies overseas – in this case, through distance education. She is studying a Master of Arts in Theology in the United States and plans to pass on her new knowledge of the Scriptures to her students at the Acts 2 College of Mission and Evangelisation in Osborne Park, where she has taught since 2007. “I was delighted to receive the scholarship,” she said. “As I’m studying through the

Augustine Institute in Colorado, there is no government funding that I can access and so the fees are quite high. The scholarship money will help make the course more affordable for me.” Mrs Vester is the only scholarship recipient to be undertaking studies in Australia, completing a Bachelor of Theology online through Charles Sturt University in New South Wales. Like the other recipients, she hopes her degree will assist her to carry out her vocation. Mrs Vester has spent four years working in Catholic Prison Ministry alongside her current role as Pastoral Practitioner for St John of God Health Care. She is also training as a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor at Royal Perth Hospital.

“To fulfill both of my roles, a good grasp of theology and particularly of Scripture is not only helpful but, I believe, essential,” she said. “For those hospital patients and family members I may meet in the future, and future students of Clinical Pastoral Education, I hope that my increased knowledge about the stories that undergird our Christian faith will deepen the God-centred encounters that we are able to have.” For more information about the scholarships, visit the Archdiocese of Perth Centre for Faith Enrichment website at www.cfe.org.au. AFTER 40 YEARS, FR KAZ STILL ENJOYS A

VARIED AND EXCITING CAREER

By Caroline Smith

FORTY YEARS can be a very long a time for recalling specific experiences but Father Kazimierz Stuglik remembers well the night he arrived at Perth airport to begin his career as a parish priest in Western Australia. Fr Kaz – as he is better known – recently celebrated his 40th anniversary to the priesthood, and said he had been surprised to see who had come to greet him when he arrived from Poland in March 1979. “I came to Australia in the middle of the night, and it was really hot,” he said. “I noticed a chap in uniform and he came up and asked me for a name, which I gave him, and he said the bishop was waiting for me. “I thought it was a mistake because, in Poland, I was only a three-years ordained priest, and no bishop would come to the airport in the middle of the night for me there.” Born in the village of Inwald in southern Poland – close to Pope John Paul II’s home town of Katowice – Fr Kaz entered the Society of the Divine Saviour, also known as Salvatorians, to train as a priest in 1976. His decision to relocate overseas came about through a visit to Poland by British Salvatorians, who were the most prominent among that Order in Western Australia. “Salvatorians were here in Perth already - they were under British province but there were both Irish and English priests,” Fr Kaz said. “Some of their representatives came to Poland and they announced that they were

looking for volunteers, and two of us volunteered to go.” During his early days at the Order’s former headquarters in the suburb of Bellevue, Fr Kaz said he had received much support from the surrounding community, which helped him settle in. “There were two families that really helped me when I arrived – the ItalianScottish Poli family and the Polish family, Basil and Maria Glowacki,” he said. After this, he went to Bunbury and then to Esperance, where he became assistant parish priest with Fr Pat Rooney, and became involved in building work for the parish, which helped him settle in further. “There was a big project to rebuild the Church in Esperance, and it was the first time I felt really part of the team,” he said. “It was a very lively country parish.” Since then, Fr Kaz has been priest at a number of parishes, including Greenmount, Midland, Northam and Armadale. As one of several priests who have worked at St Mary’s Cathedral, Fr Kaz recalled an interesting encounter there involving a young Austrian couple preparing for their wedding named Judith and Andreas Friedl. He helped them with their paperwork and officiated at their ceremony. “The wedding was on the second day of Christmas, and there were only them, a couple of witnesses and myself,” he said. “Following the wedding, they went to the Chapel of Our Lady to pray, and then I invited them to come and have

a coffee with me, and they met (then) Bishop Healey as well. “After that, we used to exchange cards sometimes after they went back to Austria. “Two years ago, I had a phone call from Perth, and this voice says, ‘do you remember me?’ and I said ‘yes, it’s Andreas’. It was Judith and Andreas Friedl, and they called me from the Cathedral, and we met up in town and had a coffee.” But perhaps the most important moment for Fr Kaz was on Pentecost Sunday 1994, when he underwent incardination, shifting from the authority of the Salvatorians to the Archbishop of Perth. Since then, he has continued to live out his vocation at parishes across WA, including St Brigid in Midland and St Francis Xavier Armadale, where he now resides. “I was seven years in Midland from 1997: initial-

ly, there were some people who were unhappy with the change and the fact that the Franciscans (Franciscan Brothers) had left,” he said. “But the funny thing is that some of the people who were causing trouble later became great supporters.” He added that his current parish of St Francis Xavier in Armadale was also one that was constantly changing. “When I came to Armadale nearly 11 years ago, it was fairly Anglo-Saxon, some Dutch, a few Filipinos, a sprinkling of Burmese,” he said. “Then the numbers exploded – we have many Indians, Filipinos, some from African countries. There used to be 160 kids at the local school, now it’s 400.” Full Text available at

UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY REJOICES AS

RICHARD CHARLWOOD IS ORDAINED TO THE PRIESTHOOD By Marco Ceccarelli

THE JOYFUL atmosphere within St John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Maylands could hardly be contained earlier this month as Deacon Richard Charlwood was ordained to the priesthood by Ukrainian Catholic Bishop, Peter Stasiuk CSsR. More than 300 members of the Ukrainian Catholic Church attended the momentous occasion on 3 April – the first priestly ordination in this particular Church which also saw former Parish Priest Father Wolodymyr Kalinecki elevated to the role of Archpriest. Also present at the ordination were St Charles’ Seminary Vice-Rector, Fr Jean-Noel Marie; Marist, Fr Steve Truscott SM; Ballajura Parish Priest, Fr John Jegorow; New Norcia’s Fr David Barry and Dom Chris; Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Monsignor Harry Entwistle; and Melkite Priest, Fr Kevin Cummins. Religious Sisters from a number of Orders were also well represented, along with parishioners, family and friends of the ordinand and a number of priests and deacons from interstate. The ceremony began with Bishop Stasiuk blessing and opening the Holy Door for the Year of Mercy before Fr

Wolodymyr Kalinecki was elevated to rank of an Archpriest and Deacon Richard to the order of the Presbyterate. In his homily, Bishop Stasiuk drew a comparison between the priesthood and marriage, highlighting what he described as “striking similarities” between two sacraments “willed by God for the purpose of bringing love into the world”. “Our early Eastern Fathers said there was a similarity between marriage and monastic priestly life. St John Chrysostom insists that the requirements of the Gospel are the same for both, for monks and for married cou-

ples: precisely, perfection in the image of the Father in Heaven,” Bishop Stasiuk said. He then laid emphasis on the importance of the family, stressing that the family is the “domestic Church” and invited all to respect the priesthood “because it also is at the very essence of the Church”. Deacon Richard was then guided by Fr Wolodymyr towards Bishop Stasiuk. He performed three full metanias (prostrations) before kissing the Bishop’s shoulder, hand and part of his vestment as a sign of obedience before being ordained. He was led around the altar three times, kissing its

four corners, thus dedicating himself always to serve at the Holy Table. Deacon Richard then knelt before the Bishop to take an oath, which included the Nicene Creed, before placing his palms crossways on the Holy Table and laying his forehead upon his hands. The Bishop then blessed him three times, laid his hand upon him and said the prayer of Ordination. As the newly ordained Fr Richard Charlwood was raised to his feet, the parishioners sang Axios (Worthy) with joy. He was then clothed Full Text available at
