Gattline heads for new record By Marco Ceccarelli THE ANNUAL Christmas Helpline run by St Kieran’s Parish Priest Fr Michael Gatt is heading for its 23rd year of service as tallies over the past two years’ festive seasons topped 100 calls. The award-winning “Gattline” is a free counselling and referral service run by the St Kieran Catholic Church priest and his team of volunteers. It offers a listening ear, assistance and support to whoever wishes to call throughout the festive season. While, for many, Christmas is often associated with celebrations, joyous family festivities and communion with others, for some it can be a time in which isolation and loneliness are felt in a more poignant way. For this reason, Fr Gatt established the helpline in 1991 as a way of lending help to those who find themselves in crisis and despair. “It’s rather a very delicate and professional helpline and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. “Hence, I am responsible for all the calls and some people continue to ring me throughout the year,” he said. Calls to the Gattline are free, anonymous and confidential. In the past, Fr Gatt has managed to help, or simply listen to, people caught in substance abuse, involved in family breakdowns and domestic arguments, those EDITION #9 | 27 NOVEMBER 2014

This is thanks to Fr Gatt’s ‘no limits’ approach which includes staying in touch with and supporting callers throughout the year. Each year, the Helpline receives new callers, but there are

also regulars seeking friendship and support. Fr Gatt, or Fr Michael as he is most commonly known at St Kieran’s parish, has an interesting background. Before entering the priesthood, he served for two years in the Armoury with the Royal Air Force in Malta. He arrived in Western

Australia as a priest in 1971 and re-joined the Air Force as Chaplain for the RAAF at Pearce Base in 1984. He was awarded the title of Squadron Leader Emeritus in December 1988 by the Director of Personnel Officers. In 2012, his helpline was recognised as the winner of the St George Preca Community Service Award presented by the Maltese Professional Business Association. This year, the Gattline will be available from Sunday, 21 December to Wednesday, 31 December, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The line to ring is 9444 1334 or 9444 8650. Life message proclaimed loudly at Cathedral By James Parker LIFE. It’s a celebration. This was the message proclaimed loud and clear at St Mary’s Cathedral last weekend at the Archdiocese’s inaugural Day of Life Mass led by Archbishop Costelloe. The celebration began with a candle procession undertaken by five leading archdiocesan groups as a sign of their unity and commitment to upholding the gift of life. These consisted of the Respect Life Office, Catholic Marriage and Fertility Services, Pregnancy Assistance and natural fertility providers, Billings and FertilityCare. In a moving homily, Archbishop Costelloe shared his personal experience of “sitting in a hospital room in Melbourne as my mother lay dying”. He spoke of how his only brother, in a different hospital in another part of Melbourne with his wife, “was due to give birth that day to their first and only child”. He conveyed how he then received a message from his brother announcing that “his wife had given birth to a daughter and that both the baby and her mother were fine”. “I leaned over mum and told her that she was now, for the first time, a grandmother to a beautiful baby girl,” he said. “Mum could not speak or move, but a tear welled up in her eyes and ran down her cheek. Within half an hour mum had died.” This experience, the Archbishop noted, formed him to understand “by personal experience, what my EDITION #9 | 27 NOVEMBER 2014

We must re-

of the divine mystery and beauty of life that is so foundational for us”. However, he proposed that “it is our task to allow God to re-shape us, and to reshape the world through us” so that we can “become people who are so attuned to the work of the Spirit of

God in our lives that the beauty and dignity of human life shines through all we say and do”. Archbishop Costelloe reminded those present to follow in the footsteps of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop and ‘never see a need without doing something about it’. “There is a great

need in our time,” he said, “to celebrate, protect, welcome and promote God’s foundational gift of life.” “It is only by learning from the one who is meek and humble of heart, and by being living images of him as we seek to do something about this great challenge of our times, that God will be able to bring about, also through us, a renewal in the minds and hearts of the people of our time” he said. At a festival in the cathedral parish centre that followed the Mass, a varied cross-section of people gathered to learn more about the work and service of life-related organisations from across the Archdiocese. Salvado Exhibition an insight into 19thcentury By Marco Ceccarelli ONE OF the final events surrounding the bicentenary of the birth of the Benedictine Community of New Norcia founder is currently being held at the State Library of Western Australia. The Rosendo Salvado Exhibition features a rare collection 19th-century photographs and artefacts about Dom Rosendo Salvado, offering an invaluable and unique insight into Western Australian history. Founded in 1847, the New Norcia mission earned great respect for its record of Aboriginal achievement and was recognised as “the single success” in 19th-century Australian mission history. Surprisingly, it was also the most photographed. Over his 54 years at the mission, Salvado became Abbot, Bishop, educator, landholder and missionary for the Aboriginal people. He was a passionate promoter of the New Norcia mission and used photographs to both report and fundraise to his supporters in Europe. The exhibition tells of the organised and collaborative life lived at the mission by the Indigenous Yued people and the Benedictine monks. On display are a number of objects and photographs dating back to 1867 which depict farming, wool pro-

duction and recreational activities, such as the composition and playing of music and the creation of a cricket team, as well as Salvado’s plans for the building of a new road between New Norcia and Bindoon. Wool production and farming were the economic engines of the New Norcia Mission. In 1886, the farm and garden amounted to 150 cattle, 250 horses, 400 acres of cultivated crops and 15 acres of vineyards. Throughout the 1880s, the produce from farming was enough, on average, to sustain a community of approximately 250 people – a valuable achievement given that at its height in the 1890s there were more than 200 Aboriginal people resident at New Norcia. The exhibition was the subject of the Ways of Telling symposium held at the State Library of WA from 13-14 November 2014. The symposium hosted

presentations from a number of monks, community members and academics from Australian universities and institutions, including the New Norcia Aboriginal Corporation, the University of Western Australia, the University of Southern Queensland, Monash University, Deakin University, Murdoch University, Curtin University and the University of Divinity.

Both the symposium and the exhibition draw heavily on the most recent research carried out at the New Norcia archives. The history of New Norcia’s success, both as a Christian mission and thriving community, seems to lie in the collaborative efforts of the monks and Yued people. Full Text available at

Historic dump in Geraldton’s cathedral grounds opened By Sarah Taillier A HISTORIC dump in Geraldton’s cathedral grounds has been opened to the public to forage for archaeological treasures from the late 19th century. The old dump site, in Western Australia’s midwest, lies on the otherwise neatly landscaped St Francis Xavier Cathedral grounds, where development is hoped to soon be under way for a new museum and plaza. In the meantime, the public have been allowed to take part in what is being called ‘the big dig’, where they can scavenge through opened earth for artefacts from the rubbish tip, which dates back to the late 19th century. Director of Heritage for the Diocese of Geraldton and avid archaeologist, Father Robert Cross, is hopeful any archaeological artefacts found will provide a window into the past. “While documents and catalogues and all can tell us what was around, what we can do, I suppose, through the material left in the ground, is come to understand the economy of Geraldton, the social status of people,” he said. “We all eventually throw things away... we can sort of pick up through analysis a better understanding to see whether there’s any representation in the rubbish of the cultural make-up of the town at that time and identify the different merchants that were in town.” Fr Cross said a number

of artefacts had already been uncovered. “We’re finding a lot of old crockery, which would be like 19th-century crockery, bits of iron and other metals, beads, perhaps they were from a hat pin... so it’s really anything and everything we’re interested in,” he said. He said the coastal port city was once the biggest exporter of soft drinks in Western Australia. Fr Cross said they had found old glass bottles from companies that vanished long ago. “These companies have now disappeared, but their marks are there in the ground in their material heritage that they’ve left

behind,” he said. He said a lot of the dump had already been rummaged through. “Unfortunately, bottle diggers have sort of got into the area and taken the best of what is there, but there
