Edition #14

We are keen to listen, says Archbishop By James Parker ONE IN FOUR people across Perth and rural areas is being asked to take part in a Vatican survey initiated by Pope Francis on marriage and the family. The questionnaire asks how the family is supported by both the Church and society. It poses questions on marriage, divorce, samesex attraction, parenting and other challenges that affect contemporary family life. Every Catholic, whether active or inactive, is encouraged to take part before the survey deadline of Thursday, 12 February. According to the 2011 national census, Roman Catholics make up 24.4 per cent of those who affiliate themselves to a religious body, making them the largest individual faith grouping in the Perth region. The survey results will form the basis of a global synod of Catholic bishops due to take place at the Vatican from 4 to 25 October 2015. The main theme of discussions at the upcoming synod will be the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and the contemporary world. This synod follows an earlier extraordinary synod in the Vatican in October 2014 which discussed the family and brought together about 90 per cent of the world’s bishops’ conferences, the EDITION #14 | 15 JANUARY 2015

Scholarships to enhance personal and communal growth By Mark Reidy THE LIVES of six Perth Catholics will be spiritually enhanced throughout 2105 after being awarded scholarships to participate in biblical studies, both locally and overseas. Margaret Barnes, Emmanuel Barrera, Kieran Chew, Donald Nield, Steven Raman and Evelyn Tierney were recently announced as recipients of the BJ Hickey Biblical Foundation scholarships, which will provide financial support for them to enrol in courses that will not only further their biblical knowledge, but will also be used to benefit their local parishes as well as the Archdiocesan community. Co-ordinator of the Biblical Foundation, Dr Michelle Jones, said this was the third year the scholarships had been granted and she was pleased with the personal and communal benefits they provided. “The scholarships greatly enrich the Church in Perth by providing ‘ordinary’ lay people with the opportunity

to immerse themselves more fully in the Word of God, and then to share what they have learned and experienced with others,” she said. Dr Jones said that the Foundation, which was the inspiration of Emeritus Archbishop Hickey, is part of the Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation and its main objectives are to provide the scholarships

as well as assist Catholics in developing their knowledge and use of the Scriptures to form a firm biblical foundation for their everyday lives. Of this year’s recipients, four will be heading overseas to complete their courses. Margaret, Donald and Evelyn will be attending various institutes in Jerusalem and Kieran will be completing his biblical studies at the

Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, USA. Scholarships are open to both lay people and Religious Sisters and Brothers who are residing within the Perth Archdiocese and want to undertake biblical studies of any length, at any level, locally or overseas. See www.thebiblicalfoundation.org.au for further information.

Sr Canisus continues to serve, 100 years on By Mark Reidy DURING the celebration for her 100th birthday at St Jerome’s parish in Munster, Sr Canisius, a member of Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition, made it very clear who was responsible for her longevity. “I thank the good God for giving me 100 years of life. To Him be praise and glory forever,” she announced to more than 300 friends and well-wishers who had gathered for Mass and festivities on 21 December, the feast day of St Peter Canisius, a 16th-century Dutch Jesuit priest. Sr Canisius was born on 18 December 1914 in the small Croatian village of Milna and the St Jerome’s celebration was one of several held to acknowledge her ongoing love, service and commitment to the countless lives she has touched since her arrival in Western Australia in 1936. At the conclusion of Mass a video, produced by Catholic Croatian Chaplain, Fr Nicola Cabraja, was presented on the life of the humble and still active centenarian. Born Katica Mladinic, she was one of 11 children, raised by her paternal grandparents after her mother died during childbirth when Sr Canisius was two years of age. At the age of 18 she left the family home and entered the convent of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition, an Order founded by French saint, Sr Emilie de Vialar in 1833. The year after making her final vows in 1935, at the age of 22, it was discerned that

Sr Canisius would be sent to Perth where many Croatian migrants had settled. Here, she lived in Fremantle and travelled by bus each day to teach at St Jerome’s Primary School in Spearwood, which had opened the previous year. Conditions at the school

quoted on the school’s webpage. “They worked hard but had no money. Whatever they had, they shared. We lived on what they lived on.” In addition to her fulltime teaching role, predominantly to newly-arrived migrant children, Sr

Such supplies proved beneficial to the small congregation of Sisters who used the produce for their meals. “They (the parents) were absolutely marvellous in those days,” Sr Canisius is

Canisius was sacristan at St Patrick’s in Fremantle and was also involved in visits to prisons, nursing homes and hospitals, providing words of comfort and encouragement. She would later become principal of the school. In 1964, Sr Canisius was transferred to St Joseph’s Convent in Albany where she would continue her

teaching and outreach visits for the next eight years. Her untiring dedication and service to others then continued for the following 15 years in Beaconsfield, including religious education classes for children in public schools. By 1981, the Croatian Ethnic Schools in North Fremantle and Gwelup had been established and Sr Canisius enthusiastically added the religious education of Croatian children to her already full list of commitments. In 2004, at the age of 90, the seemingly tireless nun finally announced to Fr Cabraja that her hearing was declining. “It’s not nice for the children to hear me and I am unable to hear them,” she said. Margaret Hubery: an extraordinary life lived in service By Marco Ceccarelli A REMARKABLE person, a generous giver, a matriarch, a forward-thinking individual, a ground-breaker and a role model of Catholic faith in action: these are just some of the words used to describe Margaret Hubery. Mrs Hubery passed away at Hollywood Private Hospital, Perth, on Saturday, 3 January after having led an extraordinary life which profoundly impacted Western Australians from all walks of life and contributed significantly to the aged care and health sectors. Her funeral was celebrated by Rev Fr Vincent Glynn on 9 January at St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth. Mrs Hubery leaves a great legacy of achievements, including being awarded the Order of Australia in 1993 for her meritorious service to nursing and community service in Western Australia. In the same year, she was also inducted into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and was an active member and strong supporter of its aims and objectives. Mrs Hubery was renowned for her strong faith and commitment to the Catholic Church. Mrs Hubery was the only daughter of the well-known Foley family and sister of the late Fr Dan Foley, longstanding Parish Priest of Good Shepherd Parish in Lockridge. She was educated at the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, Sacred Heart Primary School

Mrs Hubery was later awarded a Florence Nightingale Scholarship to study nursing administration at the College of Nursing in Melbourne and developed a deep commitment to aged care in the late 1970s. In 1978, she was appointed to the position of Director of Nursing at Mt Henry Hospital for the Aged and successfully challenged the

ed the Helen Bailey Scholarship to study the care of the aged and palliative care in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark. In the midst of this steep climb in her career, Mrs Hubery was married to Percy Hubery in 1967 and spent seven years on a dairy farm in Bridgetown, WA, where she gave birth to her two daughters, Louise and Liz.

Mrs Hubery managed to keep her nursing interests alive by establishing a Silver Chain District Nursing Service, running a Red Cross First Aid Post and serving on the Bridgetown Hospital Board. She would later become the first female president of Silver Chain and serve as a member of the Silver Chain Board of Management. Yet it was in the very place where she had been trained, Royal Perth Hospital, where Mrs Hubery took one of the great steps of her career. In 1984, she was appointed as Director of Nursing at RPH and would spend all but ten years of her working life there. Full Text available at
