Perth set to ordain eight to the priesthood By Jamie O’Brien and Marco Ceccarelli THE ARCHDIOCESE is this weekend set to celebrate a landmark event with the ordination of eight Deacons to the Priesthood. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe will celebrate the ordinations on Saturday, 1 August at St Mary’s Cathedral at 10am in the presence of an expected 1,000 people, maximising the capacity of the Cathedral and bringing the number of ordinations for Perth in 2015 to 12. Deacons Simeon San, Garner Vergara Jr., Stephen Gorddard, Jeffey Casabuena, Israel Quirit and Grant Gorddard have all studied at St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford, and UNDA and are originally from Australia, the Philippines and Myanmar, while Deacons Conor Steadman, also from Perth and Patrick Toohey, who is originally from Sydney, have also both been studying in Rome for the past year. In an interview with the eRecord speaking about their vocations, each of the men spoke about a strong desire to serve the Christian community that God will entrust them with. Their experiences, they said, conveyed a distinct sense of faithfulness and commitment to their ministry as they framed their transition into the diaconate as a sign of their devotion to the Church, the people of God and, more 1 | EDITION #42 | 31 JULY 2015

importantly, to Jesus Christ. The intimacy with Christ, they said, had sustained their openness to their vocation. Reflecting on the significance of having reached this significant milestone in his life, Deacon Patrick commented on the importance of bringing wisdom to and fostering adult faith in today’s Church. “My ordination to the priesthood is the culmination of my life and simultaneous fulfilment of it. “It is a chance for me to

exercise my gifts and to make a contribution through the graces of the Holy Spirit to the building of the kingdom,” Deacon Patrick said. Born in New Zealand, Deacon Conor Steadman obtained a degree in dentistry from the University of Western Australia before entering St Charles’ Seminary in 2008. “In thinking about the priesthood I am often reminded of the words of St Josemaria Escriva which I make my own Before God,

I’m like a little donkey, pulling the cart. That has been the job I have dedicated myself to. My job is serving God, and, in God’s service, serving all souls without distinction.” “For me, this is quite simply the mission, the vocation, of the priest to talk about God, to repeat the teachings of Christ the Lord and to administer the sacraments with great love,” Deacon Conor said. Youthful deacons one step away from saying ‘yes’ By Marco Ceccarelli AT THE AGE of 25 and 26, and on the verge of being ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Perth, Deacons Garner Vergara and Israel Quirit are living proof that the Catholic Church in Australia is alive and kicking with youthful zeal. The two deacons will be taking this decisive step on their life journey on 1 August 2015 in front of hundreds of friends and family who will travel from all parts of Australia and the world to witness the great event. “I cannot help but think of how rewarding it is to achieve what I’ve been discerning for 10 years throughout my priestly formation,” said 26-year-old Deacon Israel. “Despite this, it has also

been a slightly frightening and challenging task. I am eager to make a difference and bring the Gospel of Christ into the world,” he added. Born in the Philippines

and raised in a small city named Dipolog City, Deacon Israel studied Electrical Engineering at the Jose Rizal Memorial University. It was in 2005, he says, that he began

to feel strongly called to enter religious life. He arrived to Australia in 2009 with a religious community and began his formation at St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford. Through years of careful discernment, he understood that God was calling him to be a diocesan priest – a revelation that convinced him he needed to act upon. Still slightly bewildered at having been called by God to the priesthood, Deacon Israel reflected on the works that the Lord has done in his life thus far with amazement and pride. “I guess it is still somewhat scary to think that God chose ‘me’ for the priesthood out of millions of people in the Philippines.” Full Text available at

Patrick and Conor ready to serve God’s people By Marco Ceccarelli A DIFFERENT kind of accent has recently been echoing throughout the corridors of English-speaking Pontifical colleges in Rome, and it is not the British or American accents one may be accustomed to in the eternal city. The accent is Australian, and can be attributed to Deacons Patrick Toohey and Conor Steadman, both formed at St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford, to be ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Perth by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB on 1 August 2015. The two deacons have been privileged to complete part of their religious formation and theological studies in two of Rome’s Pontifical institutions: Patrick at The Pontifical 2 | EDITION #42 | 31 JULY 2015

Beda College, a seminary for mature vocations, and Conor at The Pontifical North American College. Reflecting on the significance of having reached this significant milestone in his life, Deacon Patrick commented on the importance of

bringing wisdom to, and fostering adult faith in, today’s Church. “My ordination to the priesthood is the culmination of my life and simultaneous fulfilment of it. It is a chance for me to exercise my gifts and to make a contribution through the graces of the

Holy Spirit to the building of the kingdom,” Deacon Patrick said. “I pray that I may be an instrument of God and bring my years of maturity, experience and faith enrichment to the Church, particularly in fostering adult faith among the Lord’s sheep,” he added. Following a strong calling in 2007 to study at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle, and a subsequent study-abroad experience at Boston College, Massachusetts, USA, Deacon Toohey had a chance and providential encounter with College theologian Prof Thomas Groome in 2008 in which he was asked whether he had ever considered the priesthood. The wisdom to be able to answer ‘why me Lord’? By Marco Ceccarelli IF THE CHOICE of the name “Francis” was used by our Pope to signal, as the Italian Saint did, that he intends to “rebuild God’s Church”, then the upcoming priestly ordinations of Deacons Jeffey Casabuena and Simeon San would undoubtedly please the Pontiff. The two young Deacons, who will be ordained as priests for the Archdiocese of Perth on 1 August, recently described their upcoming ministry as a journey of devotion and commitment that has completely transformed their lives. Clarkson, recently stated that “being a deacon has been a life-changing, challenging but rewarding experience”. “I hope and continue to pray that God, who has called me to serve His people, will

bless me with the grace I need to remain faithful to his call. “Without His help, I would not be able to perform my duty to those entrusted to my care as a shepherd formed according to the heart of

Jesus,” Deacon Jeffey said. Born in the town of Hinigaran, located in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, Deacon Jeffey completed part of his religious formation at the Sacred Heart Seminary of Bacolod City and at The University of Santo Tomas, Manila, obtaining a Philosophy degree and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology. Despite being drawn to a career in academia, he felt a strong desire to enter the priesthood and was particularly inspired by Fr Robert Carrillo, the Parish Priest of St Andrew’s Parish, Clarkson. Fr Carrillo would often visit Jeffey’s parish in the Philippines and encouraged him to enter the seminary. Full Text available at

Brothers ready to embark on the journey of priesthood By Marco Ceccarelli GROWING UP in the picturesque Western Australian port city of Bunbury, Deacons Grant and Stephen Gorddard’s faith was nurtured within a family that prioritised prayer and the transmission of Christian values above all other things. While the two brothers shared many beliefs and interests throughout their adolescent years, neither of the two had imagined that they would join St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford at the same time and find themselves being ordained to the priesthood on the same day. the Archdiocese of Perth by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB on 1 August. “From the moment I first heard the call, I’ve always wanted to consecrate my life to Christ and the Church and, having lived parish life for the

last few months, I am confident that the diocesan priesthood is where Our Lord is calling me,” said 38-year-old Deacon Grant, who has just finished a pastoral placement in the parish of Ballajura, Mary MacKillop Church.

“The diocesan priesthood is the particular way that I feel I am being called to give my whole self to Christ and the Church. “I feel called to pray for God’s people, to help them encounter Christ and experience His love, and to spiritually nourish, lead, and serve them as they, too, give their lives for Christ and the Church,” he added. Having completed an engineering degree in electronic systems in 1998, Deacon Grant temporarily worked as a computer control systems engineer in Perth before moving to Melbourne, in 2005, to discern his vocation within religious community life. Identitywa CEO provides insight into NDIS - One year on By Jamie O’Brien AS PART of the 2015 LifeLink Winter Appeal, the eRecord is this month taking a closer look at the work undertaken by organisations such Identitywa, Centrecare, Catholic Ministry for People who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired, Daydawn, Emm au s C ommunit y, Emmanuel Centre, Centacare Employment & Training, Djooraminda, The Shopfront and Catholic Outreach. LifeLink is the overarching organisation that provides ongoing funding support for agencies that deliver professional services and caring support to thousands of people in need throughout Western Australia each year. This week, eRecord Editor Jamie O’Brien speaks with Identitywa CEO Marina Re about the role of the organisation following the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), one year on from its commencement. On 1 July 2014, the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) ushered in a new approach to the way people with disability and their families have been assisted and supported by organisations such as Identitywa. In WA, there are three trial sites in which the scheme is being implemented. In the metropolitan area, there is the NDIS Hills site which commenced in July 2104 and the NDIS My Way Cockburn Kwinana site which commenced in July in 2015. In addition, the NDIS My Way South West site has been operating since July 2014. It is planned that there
