Marriage at the heart of God’s creation By Jamie O’Brien AT A TIME when the whole meaning of marriage seems to be under question, it is important for us to remind ourselves that marriage is a deeply religious, deeply spiritual and profoundly sacramental reality, said Archbishop Costelloe this week at the celebration of the 2015 Annual Marriage Day Mass. The Archbishop celebrated the occasion on Tuesday, 11 August at St Mary’s Cathedral with some 500 people, many of whom were in attendance to also celebrate a milestone anniversary with their families and friends. The annual celebration, which this year took place the day before National Marriage Day, has been held for 11 years and is now coordinated by the Archdiocesan Catholic Marriage and Fertility Services (CMFS), with the support of the Australian Family Association (AFA) and the Knights of the S outhern Cross WA (KSCWA). In thanking all those who participated and contributed to organising the occasion, the CMFS Director echoed the words of Archbishop Costelloe, who spoke about the importance of marriage as a celebration at the conclusion of the Mass. Couples celebrating a milestone anniversary were then invited to stand and receive a blessing from Archbishop Costelloe, who noted that 1 | EDITION #44 | 14 AUGUST 2015

about the challenges of marriage. “We do not always find it easy to bear with one another,” the Archbishop said. “Husbands and wives must be ready to die to self-preoccupation, to self-centredness, to a ‘what about me’ mentality and instead model themselves on the Lord Jesus who ‘loved the Church and sacrificed Himself for her’. “For this reason I want to say to all the married couples here this evening, and to those who are contemplating marriage in the future, that the mother of Jesus, together with Jesus and His disciples, were not or will not only be present on your wedding day. Broome Diocese and UNDA celebrate Aboriginal Art By Marco Ceccarelli A NUMBER of assembly banners, painted by Aboriginal artists of the Balgo Hills, Kimberley region for the Jubilee of Father Peile SAC in 1981, were the focus of a recent art exhibition held in Broome. The Balgo Banners and Christof Collection opened on Aboriginal Sunday, 5 July and continued until Monday, 13 July. Sponsored by a partnership between the University of Notre Dame Australia, Broome Campus, and the Broome Catholic Diocese, the exhibition featured works from the Balgo Art Movement and its reflection of the crosscultural exchange between Christianity and the Balgo community. Balgo, or Wirrimanu in the local Indigenous language, is one of Australian’s most remote Aboriginal communities, located in the south-east Kimberley region of Western Australia. It lies on the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert and on the western edge of the Tanami Desert. The 400cm by 80cm banners, painted on calico using poster and acrylic paint, are considered to be the very first examples of what has now become the world-renowned Balgo Art Movement. At the time in which they were painted, they influenced a number of individuals, many of whom had never painted before, to devote themselves to art and bring to life masterpieces depicting aspects of Indigenous culture and spirituality in the Kimberley. Campus Minister at UNDA’s Broome Campus, Matthew Hill, stated that the great novelty of the exhibi2 | EDITION #44 | 14 AUGUST 2015

tion lies in knowing that the Balgo Art Movement started with banners freely painted to celebrate the jubilee of a Catholic priest. He also added that this sheds light on the rich history between Christianity and Aboriginal culture. “These paintings reflect on the relationship between Indigenous people and the Church and show the development of this relationship over time,” Mr Hill said. “Furthermore, they dem-

onstrate the bond of trust between these early missionaries and the people of Balgo and the understanding that the Church was not there to erode their culture. “In a time during which many remote communities, including Balgo, were under pressure from pastoralists and miners interested in land and resources, the Church was seen as a caring option.” Mr Hill further emphasised the importance of the banners as works that initiated

a passion for art and for the artistic representation of the meeting between the Church and Aboriginal culture. “After the first banner was painted, younger men who had accepted Christianity and been baptised also created a banner with the help of senior lawmen. Cultural symbols were depicted along with crosses and other Christian symbols. Full Text available at

Orchestral Mass highlights Aussie composer By Jamie O’Brien THE ARCHDIOCESE was last month honoured with a performance of Missa Benedictus Qui Venit from internationally acclaimed Australian composer, George Palmer, at a special Orchestral Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. Conducted by Dr Nicholas Bannan, Missa Benedictus Qui Venit was performed by a specially formed orchestra for the occasion, during the 11am Mass on Sunday, 27 July, presided over by Monsignor Michael Keating and in the presence of some 200 people. The orchestra, which was joined by the Cathedral Choir and Corpus Christi College Choir, included students from Carine Senior High School, Christian Brothers College,

Fremantle, Ellenbrook Secondary College, La Salle College, Perth College, UWA School of Music, Shenton College and Trinity College. Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral, Jacinta Jakovcevic, said the intention

of the Orchestral Mass was to encourage the participation of music students to play their instruments for a liturgical celebration, while also giving the congregation the opportunity to participate in a liturgy with a full orchestra.

Mr Palmer, who lives in Sydney and was also present for the occasion, gave an address to the congregation, saying that the inspiration for the Missa Benedictus Qui Venit was undoubtedly the spiritual energy and hope of youth. “As young people, we all start out as energetic idealists, convinced we can change the world and make it a better place,” Mr Palmer said. “Often, that energy dissipates as we get older - we become resigned. “I wanted to remind all of us that spiritual energy and idealism are what make us truly alive - this is what Pope Francis is constantly telling us,” he said. Attendance at Cathedral Concert rises to musical heights By Mathew De Sousa MORE THAN 150 people braved the weekend’s bad weather on Sunday evening, 9 August to be treated to a heartwarming musical performance at St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth. A Pageant of Hymns, the second in a series of three concerts held at St Mary’s this year, featured glorious solos by Yann Kee (soprano), Joshua Adams (tenor/ baritone), Alexander Platts (Bass) and a selection of treble choristers, supported by the harmonious voices of the St Mary’s Cathedral Choir. Performed on the steps of the Cathedral sanctuary, a six-piece string ensemble, along with the grand sounds of the Cathedral’s Dodd pipe organ, provided a flawless accompaniment to old

favourites such as Amazing Grace, Deep River, The Lord is my Shepherd and Soul of my Saviour. “Hymns are such a powerful expression of our human spirit turning to God in different times of our life

and it was wonderful to present a program devoted to this ‘genre’,” said Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral, Jacinta Jakovcevic. “The program gave us the opportunity to explore the

traditional versions of hymns and then present them alongside ‘newer’ musical settings of these same texts.” In addition to the outstanding performances, Ms Jakovcevic played a selection of popular organ solos which included Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 and Giuseppe Verdi’s Ave Maria from Otello. Before introducing the second act, Ms Jakovcevic launched the latest CD from the Cathedral Choir which features a variety of hymns, motets, chants and organ improvisations while showcasing the collective harmonies of the St Mary’s Cathedral Choir and individual talent of selected cantors and soloists. Part One - Love is alive on the streets of the Philippines By Mark Reidy IN JULY this year, eRecord journalist Mark Reidy took his 13-year-old son, Joseph, on a mission trip to the Philippines to spend time with the Holy Spirit of Freedom (HSOF) Community, an Australianfounded Catholic ministry which has been reaching out to people living on the streets of Manilla and Cebu for the past 17 years. In a two-part series being published by the eRecord, Mark speaks with Joseph about the experience, while also sharing some of his own thoughts about the journey. Part two will be published in next week’s edition of the eRecord. AT THE DAWN of his adolescence, my wife Elena and I believed it was an appropriate time to expose Joseph to an experience beyond the protective cocoon of Australia’s shores: to open his mind and see a world where there is no welfare system to support those who are struggling, where some families sleep on the streets and spend every hour of their day just trying to find food to eat, and where there is little chance that they will ever be able to break free from this cycle of poverty. He was both shocked and inspired by what he discovered. “When my Dad and Mum first invited me to go to the Philippines, I was excited and nervous at the same time,” Joseph shared. “Mum told me how she had spent 18 months there before she was married and

seemed to know what they were doing. “At first, the children ran up to me, asking for money for food, but when they realised I was with Peter they just started hanging around and asking questions. It wasn’t long before I was playing with them, giving them piggy backs and carrying up to three at a time. I was surprised by

how friendly they were. “It was night time and some of them were only about two or three years old but there were no parents around. “I soon realised that they become very independent at an early age and the older ones were also good at looking after the younger ones. “Often, parents have to spend their time collecting cardboard or plastic or anything else they can find in the rubbish so they can sell it to feed their family.” Despite the friendliness of the children, who surrounded him as though he were a celebrity, Joseph was soon exposed to the brutal reality of life on the streets. TRUTH JUSTICE HEALING COUNCIL Blue Knot Day: faith based communities - On Blue Knot Day ASCA asks all Australians to unite in support of the 5 million Australian adult survivors of childhood trauma. This year’s Blue Knot Day is on Monday 26th October 2015, with events held throughout the country during the week of October 26 to November 1. ASCA is calling on faith-based communities to consider holding a special service or at least a moment’s silence in support of Blue Knot Day 2015. With the right help and support, people can and do recover. The Ripple Effect: counselling and the Royal Commission - Almost three years ago when the Royal Commission started hearing public and private evidence on horrifyingly extensive sexual abuse of children in institutions across Australia it was clear there would be a major need to provide counselling to survivors who testified, publicly and privately, and also for those who would hear the stories.
