Archbishop’s 2015 Lent Message By Archbishop Costelloe THE VERY FIRST words spoken by Jesus in the Gospel according to St Mark are, “The time has come and the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News” (Mk 1:15). As we prepare to enter into the journey of Lent this year, we might allow this invitation of Jesus to guide us. He calls us to repent and He calls us to believe. What might this mean for us individually and as members of His Church? What might it mean for us as husbands or wives, as single people, as children or parents, as brothers or sisters, as friends or colleagues, as parishioners, as clergy or religious, as children of God? In a sense, only we can answer these questions. Every one of us, no matter how young or old, is caught up in a variety of relationships. They are unique and personal to each one of us. Hopefully, they bring us joy and make our lives worth living. But relationships of any and every kind can also be complex and can easily go wrong. We are created for love and, as St Paul would remind us, “the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit” (Rom 5:5). Yet we are also fragile and often prone to selfishness. We know that “there can be no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s EDITION #18 | 12 FEBRUARY 2015

friends” (cf Jn 15:13) but we do not always find it easy to be so self-sacrificing. Lent is a time for us to listen again to the words of Jesus who calls His disciples to “love one another as I have loved you” (Jn 15:12), and who also promises to send

weakness, will become possible for us, for we, like St Paul, “can do all things in Christ who strengthens us” (cf Ph 4:13). This is why I am convinced that, fundamentally, the call to repent, which means to turn around and set out in a new direction, is

a call to turn again to Jesus. As Catholics, our faith, as both Pope Benedict and Pope Francis have reminded us, is first and foremost about an encounter with Jesus and a growing relationship of love with Him. It is from this that every-

thing else flows. The teachings we accept, the values we try to live by, the daily choices we make, and the sometimes difficult demands our faith places before us, will only ever be burdensome and even oppressive unless they are grounded in our encounter with Jesus and the joy which rises from coming to know Him more fully and love Him more deeply. What was previously burdensome then becomes a source of life and hope. This Lent, then, I invite you all to join with me once again in re-directing our gaze to Jesus, as we commit ourselves to the Lenten journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Full Text available at

Put your compassion into action for 2015 THIS SUNDAY, 15 February, A rc h bi s h op Ti m ot hy Costelloe SDB will launch Project Compassion in the Perth Archdiocese at the 11am Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral, Victoria Square. The Project Compassion appeal – one of Australia’s largest humanitarian fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns, runs during the six weeks of Lent, bringing hundreds of thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world’s poor. The theme for this year’s Project Compassion is Food for Life which aligns closely with the Caritas Internationalis global initiative, One human family, food for all, aimed at ending hunger by 2025. In 2015, Project Compassion will take a closer look at the ways in which Caritas Australia is working with partners around the world to empower vulnerable people to establish sustainable food sources and develop income streams for life. As examples of what can happen when faith, commitment and hard work combine, Caritas Australia is telling the stories of people whose lives have been affected by the work of Project Compassion. Here is Eric and Ma’s story – Growing Food for Life When Eric and Margaret (Ma) enrolled in a Married Couples Course at the Tutu Rural Training Centre 25 years ago, they couldn’t anticipate how it would change the direction of their lives, and set them on a path of growth for life. Eric and Ma radiate joy. Their smiles are infectious, their unbreakable bond is plain to see. There’s no mistaking it: this happy, healthy EDITION #18 | 12 FEBRUARY 2015

couple are in love – after over 30 years of marriage. Their homeland of Fiji is spectacularly beautiful, but it is not trouble-free. Comprised of more than 300 islands, Fiji has many isolated rural communities and, throughout the country, youth unemployment is high, nutritious foods are in short supply, and life expectancy is much lower than in Australia. Yet Eric (53) and Ma (51) are thriving. Eric and Ma agree that the Married Couples Course they took at the Tutu Rural Training Centre (Tutu) changed the direction of their lives. The centre, which runs courses for people living on

the remote northern islands of Fiji, empowered the couple to participate fully in making decisions about their future, so they could find personal fulfilment and grow a sustainable source of food for life. “The program at Tutu has truly enriched us and opened a new pathway for us where we have been able to prosper safely in life,” says Eric. Supported by Caritas Australia, Tutu has given Eric and Ma agricultural and personal training that’s enabled them to achieve things they could only have dreamt about. Together, over 25 years, they’ve built a house, established a sustainable, productive farm, and proudly

raised and tertiary-educated six healthy children. “Before that course, we used to have plans, but different plans, different ideas and we had different ways,” says Eric. “But once we’d followed this six-month course in Tutu, we came to realise that we two are one. So we are always saying one plus one is one!’ Before Tutu, Eric worked hard on the family farm, but his labour was unprofitable. “We didn’t know how to manage a farm and to work a farm, manage our time and what to plant and how to plant,” says Eric. At Tutu, Eric learned about planting, soil care, selling his produce and ways to crop sustainably in order to grow and maintain an on-going, diverse food and income source. Today, the couple grow and sell a wide range of foods, including cabbage, lettuce, okra, tomatoes and cucumbers. Almost all the food they eat comes from their own fields, and any profits they make go to maintaining the farm and their livestock, including a handful of goats, ducks and chickens. Their farm’s produce helps the family to maintain a healthy diet and avoid the serious health problems (like stroke, heart attack and diabetes) that many Fijians experience, in part due to a lack of fresh, diverse foods in their diets. “Before we went to Tutu, we just cooked whatever popped up. Archbishop struck with sincerity of faith at Emmaus visit ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY Costelloe this week visited the Emmaus Community in Queens Park, which provides long-term independent living and support for people who live with mental illness. The Archbishop celebrated Mass with residents and friends of the community on the fifth anniversary of the founding of their community chapel. “My visit to the Emmaus Community was a particularly enjoyable one,” said Archbishop Costelloe. “I was struck by the genuine warmth and simplicity in the welcome I received, and also the depth and sincerity of the faith alive in all those who gathered in the chapel for the celebration of the Mass.” “It was evident to me,” the Archbishop went on to say, “that the dignity of each person is honoured within the community and a firm yet simple consideration is given to the needs of each other.” Community members, staff, and other invited guests filled the small prayer space which gave rise to a time of unexpected impromptu sharing. “The homily was

The community was deliberately created to be a home rather than a hostel or a crisis centre where people with mental health issues are able to live independently.

MercyCare couple celebrate 62 years this year FEBRUARY 14 is an extraspecial day for MercyCare residents Michael and Carmel O’Dea – not only does it mark Valentine’s Day, but it’s also the day the couple celebrate their wedding anniversary. This year, 91-year-old Michael and 89-year-old Carmel, who live at Mercy Village in Wembley, will celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day. Michael, then 29, and Carmel, then 27, married

on 14 February 1953 at St Brigid’s in Northbridge. They met while both working at T&G Insurance in Perth, after Michael returned from service overseas during World War II. “(T&G) was a great hive for romances there. There were a lot more girls working in the offices those days and not many blokes, you see. He came back from the war and we got together then,” Carmel said. As for choosing their auspicious

wedding date, Carmel says it was a purely unintentional choice – one which, on the flipside, can turn their anniversary plans awry with so many other romantic couples celebrating the same day. “We weren’t looking for that sort of thing actually; Valentine’s Day wasn’t really kept up then at all. Nobody really thought about it until recent years when it’s really come back into vogue,” Carmel said. “We always

celebrate our anniversary with a nice dinner, but we’ve found in recent years that 14 February is increasingly not a great day to go out to dinner because everywhere is busy with people celebrating Valentine’s Day!” Sixtytwo years (to the date) later, Michael and Carmel have six children, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mandorla launches 2016 religious art award By Marco Ceccarelli GREAT WORKS of Christian art are renowned for doing more than illustrating biblical text; they rouse deep sentiment within viewers and can evoke a number of strong, at times conflicting, feelings. Within our own secularised society, less and less attention is drawn to religious art and, as a result, religious works of art are rarely given the merit they deserve. The Mandorla Art Award, Australia’s only thematic Christian art award, is seeking to reverse this trend by inviting artists to create works of art linked to a theme defined by verses from the Bible. The theme chosen for the forthcoming 2016 Mandorla Art Award, The Resurrection, draws on passages from the Bible, including Ezekiel 37:14, Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 29:13-35, John 20:11-29 and Romans 6:1-11. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe spoke at this year’s award launch, which took place at the Church of the Resurrection, Swanbourne, on 4 February 2015, emphasising that the importance of

the Mandorla Art Award lay “in the way in which it continues the ancient heritage of the Christian Church in expressing its faith not just in dogmatic formulations and in liturgical celebrations, but also, and I would say equally importantly, in a wide variety of artistic forms”. As expected, the chosen

theme of The Resurrection featured prominently in the Archbishop’s speech. Archbishop Costelloe addressed this great theme by focusing first on the importance of the unity between life and love, and second by commenting on the mystery of the absence and presence of Jesus Christ in the lives of the dis-

ciples. “The first and central key to at least beginning to understand they mystery of the Resurrection of Christ is love – and specifically God’s love for us,” the Archbishop said. Full Text available at

Skills boost set to reveal history of the Kimberley EFFORTS to improve interviewing skills of staff at the Sisters of St John of God (SSJG) Heritage Centre are set to aid further discoveries of the Kimberley’s history. Sister Pat Rhatigan, Manager and Curator at the Heritage Centre, said there was still a lot to learn from the older generations about their early knowledge of the region,

and good interviewing techniques were an essential key to recording information that would enrich the Kimberley’s historical record. “It’s not a matter of unlocking secrets. It’s about gaining information from people, before many wonderful stories from the past are lost in time,” Sr Rhatigan said. “Last week, we brought in a profes-

sional media advisor to run a workshop and we can already see the benefits in upgrading staff interviewing skills,” she added. The workshop was conducted by Vanessa Mills, host of the Morning Show at the ABC Kimberley studio Broome on 19 January 2015. “There was an emphasis at the workshop on the need for
