Fischer speaks on faith and politics By Marco Ceccarelli FORMER Deputy Prime Minister and Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, the Hon Tim Fischer AC, last week engaged in a discussion with more than 200 men on faith, politics, war and his 1,000 days as the first resident of Rome, Australian Ambassador to the Holy See. Mr Fischer’s speech, titled My Faith in the Public Square was part of the menALIVE Catholic Man Breakfast Series, held at the Duxton Hotel. After a warm welcome by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB and a formal introduction by menALIVE event organiser Kim Metcalf, Mr Fischer focused on his career in Australian politics and diplomacy within the Vatican City walls. Mr Fischer was transparent about what had supported and strengthened him throughout his career and pointed to his JudeoChristian background as a constant source of inspiration in his decision making. “I am a less than perfect Catholic and Christian,” he said, “but I did view the decisions I had to make in my life, right through and including being Ambassador to the Holy See, working through the issues of food security, people smuggling, of UN Security Council campaigns, through that JudaeoChristian prism which was instilled in me,” he added. Mr Fischer went on to speak of the upcoming Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War, and praised the work of Australian military commander Sir General John Monash, “a man who was not afraid to live his faith in the public square”, Mr Fischer emphasised. Local nurse delivers safer birthing in PNG CLINICAL NURSE at St John of God Murdoch Hospital Jodie Thompson recently visited Papua New Guinea (PNG) to help build a regional birthing suite and provide labour and delivery training to local community health workers. Jodie’s visit to PNG was coordinated through the St John of God Social Outreach International Health team, which works to build health care capacity in developing Asia-Pacific countries. Based in PNG’s remote Walamu region, Jodie spent two weeks teaching the St John of God Brothers who manage the local health clinic the knowledge and skills required to deliver babies safely. She was also responsible for helping complete construction of a dedicated birthing suite in the Walamu village to provide a safe delivery environment for local women. “PNG has very high rates of neonatal and maternal mortality, largely due to a lack of skilled attendants during birth,” Jodie said. “The majority of deliveries in PNG occur at home or in the village and there are limited resources, including a shortage of fully equipped health facilities. “The completion of this training program and the construction of a dedicated delivery room means there is now a safer option available for women in the Walamu community.” Jodie said this was her third secondment to Walamu through St John of God’s International Health program and was another extremely rewarding experience. “Travelling to PNG helps me rediscover the joy of nursing. “Being given the opportuEDITION #22 | 13 MARCH 2015

In doing so, she also shaved three seconds off her previous personal best time. Additionally, Brianna finished first in the 100m butterfly and the 200m freestyle, and second in the 50m freestyle. “When you find something

Notre Dame’s Elite Athlete “Friendly Program allows me to coordinate my units of study around my swimming training sessions and meets which gives me the confidence in balancing my sporting and academic lives. “I chose to study at Notre Dame for its personalised approach to education, smaller class sizes and the wonderful campus life here in Fremantle. Sarita shares her story - sharing food for life Each year, Project Compassion, which runs through the six weeks of Lent, brings hundreds of thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world’s poor. This year, the Archdiocese of Perth’s e-Record is publishing the stories of the works of Caritas Australia during the six weeks of Lent to emphasise how the international aid and development organisation is working with partners around the world to empower vulnerable people to establish sustainable food sources and develop income streams for life. With practical training and support, the men and women of the Kolkatla Fish Raising Group in rural Nepal have been able to share their skills and create a life-long source of food and income, where once there was nothing. Do you know the proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime?” For most of us it’s simply a saying, but Caritas Nepal, supported by Caritas Australia, has taken these words to a new level, working with men and women in a remote village community to turn a disused pond into a thriving fish-raising business so that together they can share food for life. While rich in natural beauty, life in rural Nepal is difficult. Many people are very poor, and survive by farming small plots of land which grow just enough food for their families. Unemployment is high, and very few people have the skills to develop new businesses.

The group leased a natural pond on the northern side of their village, and with a huge amount of hard work and dedication, their business has grown to become one of the most successful enterprises supported by Caritas Nepal. These days the group produce around 8,000kg of fish each year, including common carp, silver carp and big head. “There is high demand for fish in our locality and also in nearby markets,” says Sarita. “We are able to sell at a good price.” Full Text available at
